Easy to use product. Works at 16X as advertised. Attractive design of package differentiates it from most other similar function devices.
Suggested improvements: 1) Work at 20X. 2) Power from USB port, if possible, to eliminate extra power supply input and associated plugs, transformers, etc.
Would buy products from Lite-On again and would recommend to friends.
Door won't open........2007-12-23
I will not buy from this company again. Cheap for lite-on means doesn't work. The door to my Lite-On DVD/CD rewritable drive (manufactured 10/2006) doesn't open. It stays stuck. I finally have to trash it and will buy Toshiba again which has worked reliably for years and years. This was a 2nd drive in my system, and has always gotten stuck on occasion. Now it's permanently stuck. Disappointing.

The only reason this drive did not get 5 stars is because it does not support linux. On the other hand there is plenty of community support for basic burning I just can't use the 'DUB' or 'FILE' buttons on the top of the burner. Other than that it's a solid drive and works well with most utilities.

OK my title for this review was a little lame... sorry.
Buuuut you'll be pleasantly surprised at the ease of set-up with the Lite-on unit. This DVD burner was purchased for use in a corporate environment and will be primarily used to burn data CD's and the occasional DVD (CD's are still cheaper).
The set-up was painless - only one restart for the drivers, etc. I did not install the Nero software - didn't need it.
Use of the single-button operation is nothing short of easy. Very efficient and fairly fast.

I have never installed a disk drive before. I bought this to replace my worn out CDRW drive. Buzzed right through the install (once I figured out exactly what I was doing). It's been 3 weeks since I installed it. Seems to be working fine. Very pleased.
**** The Intel graphics card on this hard drive is not updated. I have downloaded the update several times but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Causes occational screen freezing that can be really annoying.

I've had this product installed and operating for several weeks. Average DVD burn speed is at or near advertised speeds. CD burns are very fast. Has worked with every burning software package I have used: Roxio, Nero, Apollo, and CloneDVD. Highly recommended.

No problems so far. Install easy. Seems to burn DVDs fine. I was disappointed with the Nero software included. Unfortunately its only shareware, basically a teaser, an advertisement. Might as well include nothing.

Fast but a little light.......2007-11-25
Overall I'm very satisfied with this burner. It's fast and reliable. I've burned hundreds of DVDs on it with no problem. My only complaint is that the burning is a little too faint. You can solve the problem by burning twice, but that can be difficult if you're burning a large volume of DVDs. Apart from that complaint, it's a good product and well worth the money.

The drive itself was well built. I had much higher expectations of the lightscribe image quality. I returned the drive based on the poor burn quality of the lightscribe label and bought a CD printer instead. While the concept is good, the end result doesn't meet my expectations. I am a photographer and I was looking for photo-quality. Probably an unfair expectation on my part.

Nice burns and read speeds.......2007-05-08
Read speeds are excellent. DVDs and CDs are read at fast speeds, not locked at slow speeds like some burners I have tried. I only tried burning at 8x as I don't trust 16x in general. The resulting burns on TDK printable media is excellent; no incompatiblity problems in any machines I play them in.
My only complaint is the enclosure seems a bit flimsy, but that's negligible.

I introduced the first disc of the 25 units spindle in my SONY VIDEO CASSETTE RECORDER/DVD RECORDER and I received the message:"The disc cannot be recorded nor played".It was rejected by the machine which was bought for.
It has a good price but unusable.
Works Great In My Mac.......2007-03-22
These disks work great in my PowerBook and in my Philips DVD Recorder. My older DVD Recorder doesn't recognize them as recordable or playable though. Equipment manufacturers have apparently not agreed to any standards.
Frustrating, time wasting product........2006-03-16
Having used TDK (non DVD disks) for many years, based on this past experience, I purchased 2, YES TWO, spindles, 50 DISKS. A disasterous decision. If any would be purchase of these disks would like to experience, computer crash, DVD drive lock-up, multiple and incorrect information about individual disks (disk empty, disk full, cannot read disk, unkown format, windows incompatible disk) then purchase these. After wasting time on 10 of the disks, I eventually salvaged 2. The remaining 48, into the garbage. The rating for these TDK disks should be -5, that's minus 5!!!!
Improperly named!.......2005-07-20
While I'm sure this is a great DVD+RW product (my computers works great with it), it is NOT a DVD-RW. The "-" and "+" specify the format and often determine how it can be used.
I bought these specifically to be used with my DVD-RW video recorder, which incidentally can't use DVD+RW, so this was a waste of money for me. The product even has "DVD-RW" printed right on each DVD, even though it's a "DVD+RW" product.
I'm very unhappy about having spent money on the wrong product because these guys can't label their product correctly.

This is a too expensive product. You should think how many times you may use it before you buy it. Actually, I bought it 2 months ago and used only 2 times. Maybe, it is better to buy CD/DVD reader instead of burner (writer).

Bottom line, this product works exactly as advertised, no external power supply, light weight and slim. I have an "ultra portable" ThinkPad X60. The DVD only comes with the docking station. This product fills the gap so I can access CD and DVD drives when traveling without adding a lot of weight to my backpack. It consists of the drive and a special cable that plugs into two USB ports to draw the power necessary to operate, quite clever IMHO. And one of them is a pass thru so you only "lose" one port.

This external slimline dual dvd writer runs off my usb port: the included power adapter is not required for newer machines. Exactly what I needed.......2007-01-10
No extra AC power cord needed. My DVD player in my laptop went out and the laptop manufacturer wanted $450 for an in-case proprietary replacement. I use the DVD player a lot on the plane and unless I'm in first class, don't have power. This one runs off the USB power. It's very slim and not bulky. Just what I needed. I only have one question. Why don't they sell this thing in computer retail stores. It's a winner!

I must say this Laptop is very sturdy easy to upgrade very fast, a nice replacement for a desktop,finger print sensor fine.
one thing though speakers are very weak, the company should really improve the speaker, and if possible recall those speakers and replace them, i'll welcome that.

So far a good standard notebook, it's necessary to read the manual and configuration to improve the notebook performance, you must dedicate time to learn about it, I believe it's just like many other brands, you must read to have it like you want it. Your hands start to feel the heat after a while of using the keyboard, light enough and small enough to fit in any standard notebook sleeve or carry on bag. Good reviews and support make it a good option overall.

It is extremely important that you know exactly what type of DVD-RW's you're buying - this listing should be more specific. I was just given a Samsung VHS / DVD Recorder and it lists very, very specific DVD's that the unit accepts (IE: It takes Sony DVD-R 4x, but it won't take a Sony DVD-RW!) AND... It only accepts 2x DVD-RW's! I made four trips back and forth to Staples just to find out they didn't have the specific brand name that I needed & I eventually found the Maxell DVD-RW 2x @ a not so local Sears Electronic store. Read your directions closely.

I just got me a Toshiba recorder and is very picky on the kind of media you use in it. It doesn't like verbatins or sonys which are very good (except for this type of recorder). So if you are looking for a good media for your recorder, this is one you can use.
