1 out of 5 stars Hadn't used it for awhile ... and it died immediately........2007-11-04

My Zip 250 USB sat in a drawer, unused, for about four years. Plugged it in today, and got the Click Of Death. Thanks, Iomega! It was brilliant of you to design a gizmo that has NO MANUAL EJECT. Drive dies, disc is stuck, and there's no way to pop it out. Argh.

1 out of 5 stars avoid at all costs.......2005-03-22

This is what happaned when I tried to use this drive on an otherwise stable Windows 2000 system:

The Iomega Tools installer demanded an immediate restart as soon as it completed.

The system hung on restart and had to be power-cycled.

A new item called 'active disk' appeared in the system tray on successful restart. There was nothing indicating it had anything to do with Iomega at all.

The Iomega entry on the Programs menu had nothing in it but a couple of web links ('help' and 'update').

I was able to read a pre-recorded Zip disk with no problems, however, when I tried to eject the disk (using the right-click menu item), Windows flung a bunch of panicked popups, yelling at me for disconnecting hardware without going through the "safely disconnect hardware" interface -- it basically acted as though I'd unceremoniously yanked out the USB cable while the drive was still spinning. Then it vomited up one of those always-delightful "Unrecognized exception" error popups, and promptly hung.

When I used this drive with an OSX system, every time I tried to eject a disk, the drive spun for over a minute before spitting out the disk.

This is all mysterious. I never had these kinds of problems with the SCSI Zip drives.

In any case, at $10 a pop, the Zip media format has been effectively eclipsed by writable CDs and DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and reliable.......2001-07-16

I've got my Zip 250-USB running on a 1Ghz Pentium 3 with Windows ME and had no trouble getting it installed. Have not had any system locks, either. It's much faster than my old Zip 100 that ran on the parallel port, though the 250-USB reads Zip 100 disks with no problem (though slower than 250 disks). I'm using Iomega's Quik Sync back-up software and it's great to have it operating automatically in the background, without me having to remember to do it.

When I bought mine, the USB-powered version was not yet available, so mine uses an AC power adapter. The USB-powered version would be nice to have for running on my laptop.

1 out of 5 stars Warning: Don't buy this miserable piece of crap.......2001-02-10

Do you like really slow, worthless drives that crash your computer and corrupt your data? Do you enjoy spending hours on hold waiting for someone at technical support to pick up? Do you like wasting hours reinstalling software that is filled with bugs? Do you like losing work because aback up system hasn't worked properly? If so you'll love Iomega products. Spare yourself hours of misery and much regret and buy something else, anything else but don't buy this miserable piece of crap.

1 out of 5 stars Warning!!!! Slow, expensive, miserable service from Iomega.......2001-02-10

All you need to know is that this drive is expensive, slow and that service and technical help when it goes wrong from Iomega is utterly miserable. Avoid this product unless you like spending hours on hold or you like your technical help from incoherent morons. Avoid this like the plague.

Product Description

Affordable personal storage to move and backup your stuff anywhere. Expand your hard drive without limits; increase storage quickly, easily and economically, as you need it, with 250MB disks (also compatible with 100MB disks). Iomega ZIP 250MB Drive for PC expands your hard drive without limits, holding the stuff you need for work or play. They're fast, easy and familiar (like your hard drive). The 250MB Zip drive delivers a time-tested, feature-rich SuperFloppy with the highest capacity of any product in its category. Best of all, current Zip 100 drive users need not worry about their investment in 100MB Zip media - the new Zip 250 drive reads and writes 100MB Zip disks as well as 250MB Zip disks (optimum performance is gained using 250MB media).

Amazon.com Review

Remember when floppy drives ruled the land of backup storage? With hard drives becoming ever more cavernous and file sizes becoming more bloated each year, it's a wonder those atrociously slow floppy drives still come standard on every computer. Maybe it's time you moved up to something faster, better, and more capacious. A Zip 100, you say? Maybe last year. But why bother with that when you can get a Zip 250?

As you likely have gathered from the name, Iomega's Zip 250 uses 250 MB disks for incremental data backup. Since the media is removable, you can buy new disks when you need more storage instead of buying an entirely new drive. The 250 MB capacity is a much more reasonable standard for shuttling around files than the 1.44 MB diskettes used by a typical floppy drive.

You might be worried about purchasing a drive that uses a parallel interface, as that's the port most printers occupy. Iomega thoughtfully has designed the Zip 250 with a pass-through port, meaning you can attach the drive to the PC and then attach a printer to the Zip drive. It worked flawlessly in our tests. The drive comes with both an AC adapter and a parallel cable, along with one 250 MB Zip disk--everything you need to get started.

Zip drives always have been designed well, and the Zip 250 is exceptional in this regard. There's a well on the side for the power plug so it doesn't protrude from the jack. This makes it possible to stand the drive on its side if it's taking up too much space lying flat.

Zip products have been around long enough that the software for them has had plenty of time to mature. The included CD-ROMs contain useful tools like Copy Machine, which lets you copy a Zip disk using a single Zip drive, and a one-step backup/restore utility, which easily backs up files from your hard drive. We also liked the included Norton Zip Rescue Disaster Recovery software, which lets you make a working backup copy of your Windows installation so you can easily restore it if the system goes bad. It works much better than the Startup Disk utility included with Windows 95 and Windows 98.

The main drawback to the parallel-port Zip 250 is its abysmal transfer rate. Peaking at 0.8 MB per second, we're talking at least five minutes for a 250 MB transfer. That's under perfect circumstances, and we all know how often computer users encounter perfect circumstances. Regardless, it's better than the 1.44 MB floppy drive it replaces, and most users won't need to transfer more than a few megabytes worth of data at a time. --T. Byrl Baker

5 out of 5 stars Iomega Zip Drive 250 MB.......2007-05-13

I bought this a long time ago. It was my first Zip Drive, which I don't have anymore. It was a very good drive and it lasted a long time. I now have a 750 MB Zip Drive.

4 out of 5 stars Does a really fine job!.......2003-09-16

I've now owned my 250 parallel port zip drive for over three years and could not manage without it. Yes it might not be as fast as some of the newer models but its the over all storage that I am please with. I use both the 100 and 250 zip disks and store a fair amount of data and photos. This machine has never let me down and I am very pleased with it! I now use it on my Windows XP without a problem although it was in the market place before XP was around. Good overall quality!!

1 out of 5 stars The Iomega drive engineers need a dope-slap.......2002-06-09

My Zip 100 suffered from the "Click of Death" and I lost about five disks and the whole drive before I learned on the Internet about this well-known problem.

I gave Iomega my email address when I registered my drive but they didn't tell me that using their well-documented defective drives ruins the disk with loss of all data.

But, I had to get my data off, so I bought a Zip 250 and today I had the Click of Death again with total loss of data and a ruined expensive disk. Arrggh!

Needless to say, I would NEVER recommend a Zip drive and I am planning on forever boycotting Iomega.

And, if you happen to run into a Zip drive engineer who designed this turkey, please give him or her a (gentle) dope slap for me.

Who at Iomega thought this piece of engineering garbage was suitable for valuable data?

(If you are tempted to by a Zip, anyway, search for "Click of Death" ...before buying a Zip drive. I wonder how many countless gigabytes of data have been lost?)

1 out of 5 stars Sloow.......2002-01-20

Do yourself a favor, set up any back-up(s) just before you go to bed. Backing up on any Iomega external device is the equivalent of watching paint dry. You can however use that time to see if you're one of the lucky few that can get decent tech support from Iomega.

2 out of 5 stars Oh god, get out of my face.......2001-06-22

I can simply say that buying this product was one of the worst choices of my life. I find it more convinient to set up slave drives than to use this. There are products that are definetely better and worth your money out there, this is just a rip off.

    Amazon.com Review

Nothing beats a Zip drive for transporting large files or making backups, as it combines proven speed and reliability with the most widespread compatibility. In our tests, we found that this extremely versatile 250 MB USB-powered Zip drive makes it child's play to add this capability to your PC or Mac. And its small, lightweight design makes an excellent travel companion, especially since it doesn't even need batteries or an external power source.

The drive comes with detailed, easy-to-follow installation instructions, but you probably won't even need them. Just run the setup program and plug the drive into your USB port; your PC will automatically assign a drive letter to it and recognize it as a removable disk drive. There aren't any jumpers or switches to set; in fact, the drive has only one button, which ejects the disk. Once it's installed, you use it just like a floppy drive to save or copy files.

Physically, the drive sports a very thin, light plastic case, measuring 169 by 117 by 26 millimeters and weighing only 1.5 pounds. It draws all its power from the USB port, so there's no need for batteries or an external power supply. And, like any USB device, it's hot swappable: you can plug or unplug it without restarting your computer. It can sit flat on a table or stand upright with the included plastic stand.

Once we started playing with the USB-powered Zip 250, we immediately saw many situations in which it would come in handy. For example, say you wanted to do some work at home. You could easily copy the files to a Zip disk, take the drive home with you, and then just plug it into your PC and be ready to go. Since it's compatible with both PC and Macs, it's perfect for sharing files across operating systems. And of course, its compact shape makes it ideal for taking on the road.

The drive performed well in both our read and write testing; we didn't encounter any glitches, and it took just a little over 2 minutes to copy 100 MB of MP3 files to the drive. That's fast enough for most uses, and much faster than a Zip drive hooked up to a standard parallel or serial port, but not as fast as an internal IDE or SCSI Zip drive.

Iomega includes some valuable backup utilities with the Zip drive, as well as some other useful applications. Iomega Backup lets you create and schedule compressed backups of specific folders or entire drives. MusicMatch Jukebox is an excellent utility for ripping CDs and organizing your digital music files. And Adobe's ActiveShare offers a slick interface for manipulating photos and sharing them on the Web.

The USB-powered 250 MB Zip drive offers an inexpensive and simple way to add removable storage to your PC or Mac. Its slim, light design makes it absolutely invaluable for road warriors who needs to take their data with them. --Ken Feinstein

    2 out of 5 stars 2001 THUMBS UP, 2007 BIG THUMBS DOWN.......2007-11-15

Like an earlier reviewer I think a product like this should work for more than three years (I'd say at least seven.) But I didn't even get three years out of mine. Unfortunately I bought one in late 2001. It was used on a fairly regular basis for about a year and a half. I hadn't used it since 2003. I recently took it out to retrieve some files and it would not work. Plugged it in, CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK WHIRRRR - cannot read disk - LED blinks continuosly. So while it's been more than three years since I bought the unit I'd say I got something like 2 years of normal usage. It's dead now, and I wouldn't dream of spending $120~$175 to replace it. I'm only considering a replacement purchase to be able to retrieve a few of the files. Basically this is an obsolete product with far superior and cost effective alternatives available.

If I do find a low cost replacement I will quickly retrieve my data and archive it onto DVDR and resell the unit if I can.

In 2001 this drive served a purpose -BFD (before flash drives.) But I wouldn't recommend this technology in 2007.

    5 out of 5 stars Good product.......2007-05-30

I'm a long time user of Iomega zip drives. My first computer had an internal 250MB zip drive installed in it. Over the years I've built up quite a collection of zip disk with files stored on them. I bought the external zip drive so I would still be able to access all of those files with my new computer.

(...) My new PC uses Windows Vista as the OS, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was no need to install the driver that was supplied with the zip drive. Windows Vista knew what to do with it soon after I plugged in the USB cable.

The external version is noisier then the internal dive I used for so many years, and it also takes longer to write to, or read files from it. However, the product has been trouble free so far, I've had it a couple of months, and I would recommend it. There is newer technology out there that is both faster, and has a greater storage capacity, but the 250MB zip drive has performed the task I bought it for with no problems.

    4 out of 5 stars Iomega Zip 250 drive.......2007-04-11

This drive is so simple to connect and use. It also takes up very little space. I also enjoy the space-saving storage of its floppy drive sized media. Overall - a great buy!

    4 out of 5 stars Zip drive.......2007-04-11

I bought this so that I could retrieve files from some 100 mb zip disks. It was easily installed on Windows XP and opens zip disks, but although it installed on my Windows 2000 machine it won't open any zip disks.

4 out of 5 stars Replacing one that died.......2007-03-31

The 250 MB Zip drive is a nice product and fills an important need. But I'm replacing one that died after about 3 years. I think they should last longer than that!
The drive makes backing up work very simple and I wouldn't dare work without one, or a similar product.

If you need an exterior Zip drive, you've found it. This is perfect for your every zip need. It is very small- not much wider then an actual zip disk. In addition, it comes with a rubber stand that can make it take up even less desk space by making it vertical. It is extremely light and therefore portable and easily plugs into your computer with a fast USB cable. There is no necessary installation either. Also, it is good to note that this is a good MB zip drive to get for two reasons- it can still take 100MB ones (the size smaller) and there is no real need for most to get a 700 MB drive (the size larger) because if you're dealing with that much information most people would use a CD instead and it is very hard to find a 700 MB disk. Also, take into account that this is a very good price especially considering it includes 3 disks- which can run $$$ each sometimes.

    1 out of 5 stars ZIP 250MB Starter - 3 U250 Disks not included.......2003-01-03

This starter kit doesn't contain the U250 disks (10 year guarantee), but the regular 250 MB zip disks (5 year guarantee). I am sending 2 kits back today. Iomega quit making the U250 Zip disks. Someone at Amazon knows about the problem, but the website has not been updated. Don't waste your time !

    1 out of 5 stars Zip 250 MB USB-Powered.......2002-12-13

Product worked well for about 6 months. Eventually it got slower and slower until it no longer would read any diskettes. Called the company and they said the drive was out of warranty and would cost $80.00 plus tax and shipping to fix it. I only had the drive for about 14 months and didn't even use it very much. IOMega refused to make any type of concession. Well they just lost a customer over their cheap dealings.

    3 out of 5 stars Almost Great.......2002-12-11

This is a neat little drive. The only reason I got this was because the new Macs don't come with built in zip drives anymore, and I have alot of data on zips. I didn't get the 750MB drive because the specs say it won't write to 100MB zip disks, which this one will.

At first I was concerned with the funny noises I heard coming from this little drive (remember, my previous experience was a built in 100MB version). It took me a while to realize these were the same sounds that came from the old drive, only much much louder. I don't know if click of death is still an issue with Zip drives, but those noises sure had me worried at first.

The portability is great, not only can you take the disks anywhere, but the drive itself is small enough to be transported easily. Simply unplug the thing, and you're good to go, it'll work on any computer with a built in USB port.

Compatibility is another story. I've had no problem reading and writing to Mac100 zip disks. On PC100s and PC250s, disk access is much slower. That's why this is only getting three stars, instead of four or five.

    5 out of 5 stars A fun little drive!.......2002-09-13

I've had my Zip 250 drive for over 2 years, and I love it! It's a snap to install, easy to use, compact, lightweight, quiet, and dare I say cute? I've only used it on my husband's computer which has USB. Recently I ordered a parallel port cable from Iomega.com.... So this drive can be made parallel port-compatible. I haven't tried it yet, so can't comment on how speed is affected (for those who are obsessed with such things!). If you're looking for an easy, reliable and affordable storage solution you can't go wrong with this drive. My first one was defective, and Iomega replaced it promptly with no hassle. And this one is going strong these 2+ years.

          Product Description

The Gigabit Ethernet G4 (PowerPC 7400) is similar to the AGP model in regards to internal design architecture. This model introduced the dual processor to the Mac with a dual 450 MHz and dual 500 MHz model. The video card replaces the DVI connection with Apple's ADC connection, which can support a 15", 17", or 22" Apple LCD. As the name suggests, this was the first model that had native Gigabit ethernet support. The fast network connection and available dual processors, makes this a fine choice for a file server.

            Product Description

The Digital Audio G4 (PowerPC 7410 or PowerPC 7450) has less RAM capacity than the previously released Gigabit G4 with a limit of 1.5 GB. This is due to the loss of one RAM slot, leaving three. This model also lost its 3.5-mm microphone jack, making room for Apple's proprietary Digital Audio jack. But what was lost in other areas, Apple made up for in processor and system bus speed increases. The processors range in speeds from 466 MHz to 733 MHz, with a dual 533 MHz model in the middle. It also requires PC133 RAM because of the faster bus speed. The faster system bus speed makes this a perfect light duty yet capable computer. Its internals will support many of the processor-intensive duties of Web 2.0 surfing and other family and data-entry activities.

            General Specifications:
PC133 SDRAM. Max: 3x512 for 1.5 GB total
