Being a dinosaur in the download world, I was surprised at how easy it is to work this thing. Had tried my son's iPod and got lost. This was simple. I downloaded from my favorite CD's and have 174 songs on there right now with room for more.

Not worth the money! .......2007-06-09
Had it for less than two weeks and the player no longer works. The player would shut off for no reason occasionally and then finally it had a total malfunction. Customer service only had one solution and that was to reformat it on my computer but the computer would not recognize it being there. Had trouble with switching between songs with the toggle switch. the headphones are bad to use, sound quality is ugly to say the least. You get what you pay for!!

I have had this product for about 8 mos with no problems. I bought it for 19.99 at a local save-a-lot store. The pros, other than being inexpensive, is its ease of use and transferring music. my pc immediatly recognized it with no disc needed. There are a few cons but for the price they are negligable.

The only possible attraction to this gizmo is the price. With that said it is still over priced. I purchased my Coby player from a local sporting goods store because I didn't want to pay a lot for a new mp3 player. I just had a really good one that I spent maybe $49 dollars for, stolen. And when I went to buy a new one they were priced around $80, $90 and up.
I went with this cheapo item and paid about $36 hoping that if I lose it or get it stolen again it wouldn't be a big deal. Now I'm begging someone, please take it. I used it for a few days and did not like the difficult screen menus. You have to scroll with a toggle switch several times just to get to a menu that enables you to play music. The toggling is not intuitive and you have to jar it several times before it actually moves once. The view is less that an inch tall and so you really can't see what your playing.
Long story short before anyone got a chance to steal this one it stopped working completely in a couple of weeks. I just took it back to the store for a refund of my money. It is well worth it to spend another 10 or 20 dollars and get a decent MP3 player.
Great for four months.......2007-03-05
This item was great for the few months that it worked. I liked how I could just plug it straight into a USB port to transfer music. I had just started using its voice recording function when it stopped working. I was able to record a lecture and do an interview with it. It seemed to me to have a good range and playback. I typically didn't use the earphones, but rather plugged it into my tape player in my vehicle. A drawback perhaps is that songs are listed sequentially, so it is not possible to select a menu, choose your favorite artist, and then choose a specific song from that artist. But, I didn't mind that so much. The major flaw was that it stopped working. The COBY screen flashes on and off, never getting to the point where I can play any music. I can still use it as a thumb drive to store media if I want, but it's a bit bulkier than my other ones. When I contacted COBY about doing a reboot, I was told how to reboot it, but that it was out of the short warranty period. I know that no device is going to last forever, but I think that I'd like an MP3 player to last longer than 4 months.

Alright, first off this piece of crap will randomly stop playing. It started off when I'd just walk around that it would turn off, but now sometimes I barely TOUCH IT and tilt it to the side to look at the song and it turns off. It is NOT easy to use if you're a HOLD button person... if you have it on hold while plugged into your computer, it will not let you delete or add music, which made me panick at first and fear for a permanant playlist.
Also, the headphones that come with it are REALLY not worth it, they are really really bad, so go buy some nice Sony ones.
AND, the song switcher thinger is a little defective... it's neat, but you can push it down and it'll hit something inside of the MP3 player that makes the songs skip and be all crazy... so it gives me a fear of damaging the insides of my MP3 player whenever its in my pocket or something.
I think thats about it... I wouldn't recommend it, unless you want a cheap piece of s***.

Totally Fair for the Price.......2007-08-14
I bought mine over a year ago. I've changed out the music three times, run through several battery changes and even dropped it once. It still works perfectly. I did throw away the really crappy earphones that come with it, replaced them with a better quality set, about $20, which I can always use in other ways if this gadget finally does die. The buttons all work, just the basic stuff: skip forward, skip back, +vol, -vol and off. What else do I really need? The sound is fine, too.
Like someone else, I took away one star for a temporary freeze-up, but like him, it started up again just fine with a battery change.
(Strange, though, because the first battery was new, and had plenty of juice.)
Overall it sounds like they have some quality control issues, as a lot of people are getting units that just plain don't work, BUT if you dodge that bullet, you get a very decent little mp3 player for an amazingly good price.

This is my 1st MP3 player. It was the cheapest one with the best ratings I could find. I didn't want to pay for features I didn't need. I had an initial problem getting it to work...turned out to be my mistake...I hadn't noticed that the battery came in a shrink-wrapped sleeve that had to removed(duh). But after that, it was fine. I use it primarily for quick&easy data file transfer between our two PC's, but the sound is fine through my Etymotic head phones for music, too. It did freeze up once (couldn't get the buttons to respond). I removed the battery, put it right back and then everything worked fine again. If not for that, I would have given it 5 stars. I'm a little nervous about the few reviewers who say the thing broke down quickly, but if this thing lasts a year, it will be worth it.
Used at the Gym.......2007-05-10
I bought this to use at the gym. I'm glad I bought it. The most important thing is to use good headphones. I used it with some cheap headphones at first and it was nails on a chalkboard, then I plugged in my Audio Technica ATH-M30's into it and it was a completely different story. If you put songs on it for the gym and can hit play and just let them go this player will work well for you. If you need to adjust the volume or change the song every 4 minutes this probably isn't the best thing to get. Overall I think it's a really good value.

This thing didn't last long at all. First month worked fine. Second month, the files started to randomly get shuffled into other files. Third month, the folder files were unable to be deleted off the player, and the screen gave foreign jargon instead of english, so I had to remember how to get to menu items by counting 'clicks' and 'ups and downs'. Fourth month, the screen went out. Bottom line, stick with a proven technology leader like Sandisk, who have been making quality flashdrives for years. I've got one of their players and have had not one problem for nearly a year.

The Best Cheap Mp3 player for MAC or PC.......2007-02-07
I had this for 1 1/2 years. I am a MAC person. So I wanted the cheapest MAC compatible player out there. IT WORKS EXCELLENT!! For both types! No reformating of the drive, you stick in a MAC it reads it or stick in a PC it reads it. You can't use Itunes with it but the software in the box works fine. It does the job. You get what you pay for which is true. Simple to use and drag and drop and your done. I use this for work as well (transport files).
TIP: if does fail go to the website and get the FIRMWARE UPDATE. I had mine freeze up b/c I snatch it right out of the port rushing to meet an appointment. I got the update and it works again, Great!
PS I have a NanoPod too, this is COBY player is still a great value.

The navagation buttons are a little odd. The music seemed to be glitchy, but I think that was my software I was using. It has been running fine for the last 6 months. Doesn't eat up batteries that bad. I use it jogging and has a hold button which is nice.

An excellent product, especially for the price. With a good set of headphones the bass is very acceptable and volume perfectly suited to private listening. I would very much like to have it a meet all my needs and personal crusades, but hey, for the price I can afford to use another set of headphones; it's not like I don't have a few laying around. In hindsight I would get a little larger memory device, but for a starter system this is beyond great and if the big kids on the playground take it from me, I'm not out that much.

I use this at work. I do weedeating, and as you can imagine its reallly loud. I just put it on hold, stick it in my pocket and Im good to go for a couple of hours. Even at the highest volume (which is pretty ear-drum blasting!) its batteries last. I LOVE the equalizer, and as for durability, its survived two years of abuse between work, getting left in the sun, having gatorade spilt on it, etc. I give this a definate thumbs up!
An okay player...Warning: Lead exposure hazard.......2006-12-27
I got the player quickly and was easy to transfer mp3 files...just plug it into the USB port, drag, and drop. Main Menu is somewhat cryptic, using abbreviations instead of words for each selection. The little selection nub worked okay but felt a little slippery. Display is bright and readable with a nice array of backlight colors to choose or cycle through. The unit uses a AAA battery instead of the more common rechargeable kind thru the USB port.
The real irating part is the earphones. The phones themselves sounded marginal with little bass and are somewhat large in size. The REAL problem with them is that the cord insulation contains LEAD and thus poses a health hazard. I already own Christmas lights that have this problem, but those I handle once per year. But to have lead in a product that is to be handled daily is unacceptable. And since I had bought this for my daughter, for sure I will throw the earphones away and buy better, SAFER ones for her, if not send the unit back altogether.
Why 2 stars and not 1? It's small but not too small, has a USB connection and includes a USB extension cable, nice looking and good display, and easy to use once you learn it. Instructions are simple (in them you see the lead warning). Will attempt to post a copy here when I get them scanned in.
Be Aware Does Not Work with Itunes.......2006-05-09
Nowhere in the product description (or in the manual) does it mention that there are limited sites to download from.. in fact, there are no sites listed at all. The manual says to drag music from a music download site to the mp3player. Although this was easy to do, the player will not recognize any of the songs I downloaded. COBY customer service was unhelpful. Call and find out exactly which sites you can download from, or don't waste your money.

You get what you pay for.......2006-12-19
The 512MB Coby is the 4th player I've had to buy in as many years. The LED lights up well enough, the sound is ok for the price range of this player, and it connects and syncs well with USB on PCs and Windows media.
The big downside is that it uses up the juice on the single AAA battery within a matter of a couple of hours. If you use your mp3 player often, say at work on a daily basis, prepare to spend a lot on batteries. No other mp3 player I've ever used has sucked up battery juice as quickly as this Coby unit. The other downside is that there is a delay in using the small 4 sided switch control. Changing the volume or moving between music tracks can be frustrating, as it takes a few seconds for the unit to activate each time you push the forward or backward controls.
Ultimately, this is a so-so player. It has some nice features and is good enough for an entry level player. But if you're an experienced I-podder, you can do a lot better with a higher end purchase.

It comes in handy on long trips, helpful at meetings and great for saving pictures and documents on. It's small and compact that I carry it in my pocket its also light so when you hang it around your neck it does not bother. Iam happy with this purchase. It's also a great gift.

I would say this is an example of 'you get what you pay for'. On the plus side, 2 gigs, mp3 player, FM radio, voice recorder all for $40. On the minus side - it is very difficult to figure out how to use the voice recorder, very complicated to access voice notes, the FM radio is average and the battery life is dismally brief. I don't feel ripped off, but I would probably be happier with something that cost more.

Probably not bad product for the price. But I bought it to use as a pocker recorder to easily capture ideas. The actual recording works well, but there's way too much menu navigation to get to record something. Not a procedure I would do while driving.
Also was counting that the 2GB would let me replace my current USB flash drive that I carry around. Unfortunately found that it would not allow anything other than music files. I don't mean it would not "play" a Word document, a restriction which makes sense. I mean it would not even allow me to put the Word document on the disk.

I needed a device that was able to simply store data... but I also wanted one that could play MP3 files while I was about. Most people only talk about the MP3 functions, and they are like any other MP3 player. I will tell you how to make this the ultimate data storage device and also MP3 player.
There is a menu on the device, you need to go into settings and change the USB type to MSC.... DONE! Now plug it into USB slot and you will see it as a regular drive with all the bells and whistles you would have on a regular drive.

I use this in my car radio, it has a USB slot, and it plays music there as well. Talk about the perfect device... music everywhere I go and it interfaces in all USB slots.
Here is a BONUS,
I have Vista and it offered to use this drive as a "READY BOOST" drive to speed up the system. I didn't do it, but was suprised to see it was possible since those drives have to have very fast transfers. Now, the thing is.... I think it transfers files slowly so it might have been a fluke that windows thought it was fast enough to boost the system. I have tried many USB drives and the only one that windows thought was fast enough, besides this one, was one that said it was a "ReadyBoost" capable drive.
**Yes, you can play music in windows media player strait from this device. You must be in MSC mode, otherwise you gotta sinc the files and all that junk.
THIS IS PERFECT FOR MILITARY PERSONEL BECAUSE MANY OF THE COMPUTERS THEY CAN USE WILL NOT ALLOW FILES OR DATA TO BE PERMANENTLY ADDED. NOW YOU CAN STREAM FILES RIGHT FROM THIS USB DEVICE.
Bottom Line, This is a great gadget that allows you to have music everywhere you go and also data, like pictures or text documents, or any other files. 2GB is alot of room for all this stuff. I have used 1GB for music which was ~150-200 MP3 Files 128-320kbps (mostly 128), and still 1GB for pics and docs... its alot of space.
Or, get the 4GB model...

I'm a student and this mp3 player keeps me studying for hours. I recommend it if you're looking for something economical with a decent amount of memory. It's simple, nothing fancy. I get 15-20 hours of play per battery. I think the sound is alright unlike the 2 star reviewer. The headphones didn't work, but I wouldn't have used them anyway.

What you save in price you make up for in battery cost.......2007-12-11
I bought this, this because I really didn't need an mp3 player since I listen to the radio in the morning and late afternoons but the price was right. I lie to you not, I have to put a new battery in this thing everyday if not every 1.5 days. The cost adds up to the same as a an ipod after battery costs. If you don't listen to your mp3 player everyday then this is the player for you.
Cheap price for a cheap item.......2007-12-01
You get what you pay for. Battery life is very low (about one hour max. of continuous play). With more than about 75 MP3's loaded, the player seems to get "confused" and cannot find all files. I think it has something to do with the way the memory organizes the files into subfolders (artist and album). If you navigate through the folders, you can find all of the loaded MP3's but if you're just wanting to turn on the player and go, you might find a big portion of your music unavailable. For example, the first time I loaded up with MP3 music files, I added 120 files. However when I turned on the player, it only showed that I had 70-some files. I deleted a few files from the player and then it showed I had 80-some files???? Very strange. I decided to test it by loading up the MP3 files into the root folder on the player using Windows Explorer. This helped but didn't totally fix the problem. (Loaded up 120 files and now it's showing 107...) My wife purchased a Sansa M240 for about the same price and it is MUCH better.

This product is very solid for the price! Easy to download music too and easy to use. I like this model because it has better use buttons. Older models had trouble with buttons sticking. Solid choice for this price! Easy to operate and understand. Only drawback is I am a heavy user and wear them out fairly quickly but for the money I simply keep a spare on hand! Can't beat this product for the low price!

i read others reviews and took a chance on this item. i'm not disappointed at all. this player works just great for me, although you must follow the instructions close. the only problem i have is when my cat chewed on the usb cable and i now have to hold my mouth just right.
my wife also has a coby (a higher grade) but she has no problems with hers.

Although this item is priced right, I found it to be cheap. It didn't work with my computer so be careful when buying this item. I purchased a Sansadisk MP3 player after returning this one and it is wonderful.

I Brought this for my nephew, and i'm glad to report there are no problems with this player. When i first got it i was testing it out at work, where i'm located in the basement of the building, i don't even get cell phone reception down here, but i was able to pick up radio stations with little static. I also love the lcd diplay, this was i good buy.
The only thing is that it's sort of difficult to get back to the main menu when you are in fm mode.

I didn't have very high expectations since this MP3 player was under $30, however it has been very reliable and easy to use. A great starter MP3 player for a teenager or someone nearly 40 like me who is finally buying one.
