Bad decision.......2007-12-08
I ordered 2 of these since the price seemed pretty good. One for me and one as a Xmas present. The one for me was immediately used upon arrival, but totally died within two weeks. I got a red light on the front of the unit (indicating failure) and the "clicking" sound of death for a hard drive. Since this happened to mine, I didn't want it to happen to the other one that was gonna be a present so I sent them both back and got refunds. Be VERY careful if you get one. Who knows what may happen to it down the road (2 weeks, 2 months or 2 years).
one month life span.......2007-08-27
I bought two of these units for MP3 archival purposes. Both failed within one month. My sister had the first and just decided to pitch it. Cavalry replaced the second (my shipping to California), and it too has recently failed (IO errors). Great archive; time to re-rip my 2500 CDs. Avoid Cavalry products!
What a fiasco!.......2007-08-07
I just bought this drive a couple of months ago and have only been using it for about a couple of weeks and today I got the red light of death. It flickered blue and then red and then blue...I immediately set about copying the image files I had just been working on and I see that the files are being copied intermittently (when the light flickers blue - a few MB's of files copy, then it's red again and copying stops, then blue...). Right now, if it keeps going, it will take about 11 hours to copy this one folder of images - OUCH! As soon as I get as much of my recent work off as I can, this is being sent back and it will be the last time I buy a Cavalry Hard Drive!
Piece of Junk.......2007-07-28
This product is worse than useless. After I bought it, I read several reviews panning it. I bought it for backup of graphic files, especially photos. After I spent some time organizing my files and backing them up to the Cavalry external hard drive, I tried to transfer the files to another, internal hard drive. I kept getting read errors and having to start over. Fortunately, I was able to preserve the data by being persistent and copying small segments at a time. I haven't used the hard drive since.
6 months later, still working........2007-06-27
As i said, it's been six months and it's still working just fine.
The reason it gets three stars instead of four is that it seems to take time to warm up once plugged in... which I find odd, but that may be common to all external USB hard drives. I honestly don't know.

waste of money.......2007-12-19
worked great for one year, then died 15 days after the warranty was up. I've had reliability problems with other smartdisk products too.
Good Hard Drive.......2007-10-08
Very ugly design. Takes up a lot of room. The image on Amazon looks a lot better than it really is.
As a backup drive is fine. Just find a place that you can hide it. I give it two stars because it does its job. But I would not get one of these again until they change their design.

loose power connector.......2007-06-12
Despite the loose power connector to the main drive everything works great. Don't try to touch the power cord or connector after power is on otherwise it will be disconnected from the computer.A bit hot too.
great external hard drive.......2007-03-09
very user friendly. bought this to be able to save all my data in case of reformatting purposes. also to store extra music and what-not to not bogg down my laptop. works super fast and easy! great buy.
disappointed.......2007-02-16
I bought this for my girlfriend. I have had two other Smartdisk products which work fine. This unit abruptly stopped working one month after purchase. I understand that products break and this is expected. I am disappointed with the customer support. Multiple phone calls were made to Smartdisk corporation, after waiting 15-20minutes (with long-distance charges) and speaking to different customer rep yielded only false promises and no result. I don't think I'll buy another Smartdisk product.

Smooth.......2007-11-01
I'm highly recommending Apricorn. It's known for its reliability and moderately priced drives. A top review at PCWorld turned me on to the company. I decided to purchase directly from Apricorn; their pricing is reasonable. The drive's fan is almost silent; speed is as advertised. There's absolutely nothing complicated here ... just plug it in. That's it! It comes with a nice back-up package of disk imaging, cloning, and encryption software for both mac and windows. The directions for these were uncomplicated. No software is needed, but it's nice to have scheduled back-ups that Apricorn's selected software package provides. If or when I ever have a problem with this drive, I'll return. No news is good news.
Too complicated.......2007-07-28
Unless you have an IT background, I found this way too complicated to set up and returned it to Amazon. It was the first time I ever did anything like that.
Perfect and Rugged Drive, Plus Upgradable!.......2007-05-03
I bought this drive when WD's MyBook Premium dropped the ball on installing itself in WinXP systems. This thing is bulletproof and you just plug it in and it WORKS. The fan is relatively quiet and the sturdy aluminum chassis keeps the drive cool. I went ahead and popped in a 320GB drive into my unit and it worked perfectly once I partitioned the drive in WinXP.
The only thing you'll want to do is turn off the unit monthly and open the case to blow out the dust that accumulates on the inside of the unit. You might need to do this less often if you don't have pets...
I can't recommend this unit enough and I'll always choose Apricorn over Western Digital because of this little gem.
Great if you can get them.......2006-12-30
Ordered one from Zipzoomfly, paid for 2 day delivery, they charged my credit card. Two days later another item I ordered arrived. Not the hard drive. Called zipzoomfly. Zipzoomfly informs me that they didn't have it in stock even though Zipzoomfly's web site shows it stock. When asked why Zipzoomfly didn't let me know it wasn't in stock or why Zipzoomfly didn't let me know they were only shipping one of the two items I paid for and Zipzoomfly's email said was shipping, Zipzoomfly responded they would have notified me later. Really? Like I wouldn't have figured out Zipzoomfly didn't send it when the package arrived. Zipzoomfly used to provide good service. Not anymore. Plus when I searched the web today, one three different shopping sites, Zipzoomfly is still advertising they have them in stock. Stay away from Zipzoomfly.

Problematic network connection.......2007-08-12
This drive doesn't live up to its claims, nor is it an effective network drive. When I first hooked it up, it was fine: the setup was quick, the interface seemed user friendly, and I was able to create users and log in from my other computers on the network.
The problems started when transferring files. First, transferring any file that was larger than 100mb would somehow disconnect the drive and render it unavailable over the network. I would have to manually shut it down and power it up since the web interface was no longer reachable. Second, as I was using it as a backup drive, I copied over a bunch of files, and while it was copying them, the drive crashed and lost all my files. I'm glad I didn't rely on this crappy machine as the only back-up device.
Now, it seems that the network connection (probably the network card) is gone and I can't use the drive anymore. The blue light assures me that it is functioning correctly, but when searching for it, either with the DriveDiscovery software, or just trying to navigate to it using the network browser, it's not there.
I bought this last year in October, so this stupid thing didn't even last a year. And there is absolutely no help from Iomega's website.
If you're thinking of getting a NAS, please don't get this one, and definitely don't use it as a back-up device.
Not a good backup solution.......2007-07-06
I bought this product to provide an unattended backup solution for multiple workgroup PCs. Unfortunately I could never get this to work even with multiple calls to Iomega technical support. The documentation doesn't tell you that the user accounts you create on the drive must be the same as those on the Windows client and the drive letters mapped to individual shared directories can't be maintained during a reboot whether mapped through the Iomega Discovery Tool or the Windows interface. The Retrospect Backup software included seems like a pretty good product, but unattended backups consitently fail because of drive mapping and authentication problems. I requested that Iomega refund my purchase price but they declined...first because I didn't buy it from their web site...then later because they said there was nothing wrong with the drive even though they admitted that the advertised and documented functions did not work correctly. I spent 8 hours troubleshooting this product at a customer site and with Iomega support and could never get this product to work correctly...DONT BUY THIS DRIVE FOR BACKUP SOLUTION IF YOU WANT TO HAVE INDIVIDUAL USER ACCOUNT/DIRECTORIES AND UNATTENDED BACKUP!
Great BackUp Drive.......2007-05-22
Easy To install/configure,worked right out of the box.
Easy to use GUI interface(configure users, shares)
Great as a backup device, Drive is a little slow to be a primary storage device.
If you want speed, an external USB drive would be the way to go.
Fan is a little noisey, but only after large data transfers.
Slow writing speed.......2006-12-11
I have to agree with the reviewers that state that this thing has a slow writing speed. I am experiencing this as well with my unit. I suspect there is some lag time going from Firewire to USB, though the box on the Iomega clearly states that the drive operates at 7200 rpm- same as my firewire drive.... Also once you open the file window to the hard drive it takes five seconds or so for the files to actually appear. At first I was worried that they didn't copy over, but they did. Just delayed repsonse time.... I am using a 2006 PowerMac w/ 2.0 USB.
I just purchased this past weekend so I unable to share any other issues with you at this time.
Network Drive Touts Backup.......2006-07-12
Network storage is undeniably convenient for backing up documents and storing media files. Iomega's StorCenter Network Hard Drive is very similar to others in its category, distinguished mainly by its physical design and distinctive software bundle.
I tested a shipping version of the 250GB StorCenter and found much to like. Unlike most network hard drives I've seen, which lack a switch and are always on, the sleek black unit has a power switch on the back. Like competing drives, such as the pricier Maxtor 500GB Shared Storage Plus ($500), the Iomega has two USB 2.0 expansion ports (for attaching other storage devices or a printer), is Universal Plug and Play-compliant (for use with a UPnP media server), and has gigabit ethernet.
Installation was simple; I attached the drive to the network and ran the installation utility, and my system's OS automatically assigned the StorCenter a drive letter. Iomega's installer has a friendly, unimposing design, as does its Discovery Tools software, which can be run at any time to find the drive's IP address, rename the drive, or change the drive mapping.
The remainder of the software bundle consists of the full version of Iomega's capable Automatic Backup Pro 3.3 software (a $70 value by itself) and Microsoft's FolderShare, for secure data sharing via the Internet. The included free (limited) FolderShare program would have set this drive apart, but regrettably the service was scheduled for discontinuation in early 2006.
The Automatic Backup Pro software and power switch make this drive an attractive option. But the drive's 250GB capacity feels limited, given that a number of networked drives come in capacities up to twice that (and priced accordingly, of course).

Avoid the bottleneck of slow drives! BUSlink offers the ideal solution for high speed-intensive applications such as editing videos, playing games, or backing up your system's internal hard drive. Up to 40 times faster than USB 1.1, the BUSlink UII series of external storage features 7, 200RPM hard drive, up to 56% faster than 5400RPM drive versions. The BUSlink's USB 2.0 is a dramatic performance increase over the standard USB 1.1. Whereas USB 1.1 is only 12Mbits/s, the new USB 2.0 Hi-Speed specification used by the BUSlink USB 2.0 runs at up to 480Mbits/s. USB, standing for "Universal Serial Bus", allows you to attach up to 128 devices simultaneously with automatic device detection and installation.Since USB 2.0 Hi-Speed is an evolution of the existing USB 1.1 specification, it is fully backward compatible with current USB systems and peripherals. Even with the dramatically increased speeds, it works with existing cables and connectors. In other words, consumers will have the benefit of using devices they already have, so their investments are protected.
