4 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2007-12-23

It's important to tell you right away that I'm using these headphones with a Creative Zen. A lot of reviewers are using ipods which do not produce good sound, so it's not the headphones fault: it's the mp3 player. Apple simply spends lots of money on advertising. Those commercials are not free. They actually add up to about forty dollars in each ipod.
In short: pay attention to where the sound is coming from. If you check reviews and look at ipod verses creative you will find that every review will say that creative sounds better. Don't blame the headphones!! Blame the marketing trap that you have fallen into. I'll get on with the review in a moment.
Did you know that the Creative Zen also has an FM Stereo, a voice recorder and is expandable through an SD memory card? All the while sounding better than the ipod nano. The zen has a bigger screen as well.
On with the review :)

These headphones are well worth the money. It's important to note that you should turn the volume down before trying the headphones. I listen to mine at a setting of only seven. Skullcandy smokin buds fit directly into your ears so the sound is very close to your eardrums. These will cross the pain threshold (point at which the music hurts) at about twenty.
The direct fit blocks out most outside sound so be careful

Update: 12/25/07

After a few days I still like the sound quality but they are hard to get to stay in my ears. Also with "Rock" the base is bad and can sound a bit tinny. But all in all I still like them.

Original Post:

$10 well worth it for sound.

They have a very NICE RICH sound.

They do squeak when I move my head. But can live with that.

And need to push in to ear to get to stay. Don't know what my Doctor would think of that?

But all in all I am surprised how good they sound for the price.

Would recommend to a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing for the price.......2007-12-07

I really bought these just to see if this style of earbud with the silicon sleeves would work for me - but I was amazed with the sound quality for the price. I have a pair of Etymotic er6s that are just incredible in terms of clarity - but they really only shine when used with an external amplifier (I have CMoy I got off of eBay) - and they are not comfortable at all. I need to get custom earpieces for them.

But the Inkd are not only terrific for general listening when I'm out and about, they are very comfortable too (base is a bit loose, but still pretty good and clarity is great).

I'm going to try their Full Metal jacket ones next.

4 out of 5 stars great!!.......2007-12-04

good headophones [and cheap! on sale at FYE, fow now]. i've bought multiple pairs of headphones for my ipod and they never last very long. i've gotten $30 replacement ipod ones and $15 coby ones but they all fall apart in the ened. but this one has, so far endured, and i hope it continues to do so. because i don't think i can afford to keep shoveling out money for headphones.

4 out of 5 stars Skullcandy who? Smoking.......2007-11-25

The best earbuds under $20 period. A major problem with cheaper buds are the sound quality, but these buds almost break the mole. You get so much more noticeable sound range then the similarly priced Koss Sparkplug, also under $20. The sound fidelity is not as clean as the Philips SHE5910 Virtual Surround, but the Skullcandy Smoking Buds Ink'd Earbuds has more bass. Also the Skullcandy bud design is terrific. They pop right into your ears with three different sizes and does a decent job of sound insulation, but not as isolated as the marshmallow cushing. The only thing I noticed, but not taking away from the rating is that it provided no case.

I definitely get these over the muggy sounding Koss Sparkplug, but if you like more Jazz and higher sound fidelity get the Philips SHE5910 with its fallout of your ears design.

There are more reviews for this on the black version, but I got the red one, so I thought I could also comment on the looks of the specific color in addition to the general quality. I got these on impulse, to replace my iPod's default buds (which have been a literal pain in the ears).

Regarding the appearance and materials: They seem to be color-matched to the red 2nd generation iPod Nanos, but I don't have one to test this hypothesis. Like the 2nd gen Nanos, they have the appearance of anodized aluminum, but I suspect it's just plastic. They've also got the trademark Skullcandy skulls on the ends, underneath a small plastic bubble. I'm not too fond of the way Skullcandy emblazons their products myself, but in this case, it's tiny enough to be bearable. Unhappily, the cords are this weird easy-to-tangle rubber (more so than Apple's buds) that appears ugly and crooked from a distance and rather annoying from close-up. You'll probably want a cord wrapper unless you're really good about keeping your cords untangled. I can also see the cords getting worn out in time (they seem flimsier than the free Apple buds)... but they're cheap and not painful to replace

Now on the buds in general... They're really great sound isolation buds for the price, but with the following points:

- Good sound requires deep insertion of the silicone tip into the ear canal. Your ear canal needs to be totally sealed by the tips, or the sound will be bad and you'll hear a lot of ambient noise. These are much easier to put in than the Etymotic 3-flange tips, but they also don't dampen ambient noise as well. However, these are still VERY comfortable for long periods, and I'll happily take the ease of insertion for a little less noise dampening (I actually prefer being able to hear oncoming traffic and people talking to me when I've got my earbuds on).

- The SLIGHTEST bumps to the cord will travel straight to your ears in the form of loud BANGS. This is true of all in-ear buds, and especially true of deep-insertion types. You can ease the noise if you clip the cord to your shirt (so most of the sound vibrations will dissipate into your shirt before reaching your ears). Wearers of dangling earrings may also find that their earrings might bump into the cords for the same effect... you'll have to rotate the buds to position the cord out of the way of your earrings.

- The sound is quite good, with nice bass and... well, I'm not enough of an audiophile to comment much on the rest of the spectrum, but it sounds very nice and full to me (though I find other reviews putting it higher than Shures a bit hard to swallow... having never tried Shures myself). However, I'm not sure if this is JUST my unit, but there is an audible static hiss when my buds are plugged in. It's faint enough so my music usually covers it, but it's apparent once the music stops. I don't really mind, though, since I will mostly be using this outside, when ambient noises will probably cover up the hiss. I'm mainly just pleased to actually hear bass coming from my iPod.

- There is absolutely NO differentiation between the left and right buds (they are completely symmetrical and identical). While it's understandable because they're accessories meant for the 2nd generation iPod Nanos, it limits their use to things in which the left and right channels don't really matter. 3D sound effects in action movies and shows might be lost if you switch up the left and right buds.

All in all, I'd recommend these as a good set of cheap earbuds with changeable sound isolating tips. They're not AMAZING, but... well, remember the price tag ($10 or less, or you're not bargain-hunting hard enough) and be pleased.

The "Ink'd" earbuds (which were available locally for the same price) were an impulse buy for my wife because I could get pink to match her new Ipod Nano. However, when I read notes on the Ipod earbuds, I was glad I bought them, and she was even more so. She loves them, so much so that I bought her a spare pair and bought a set for our daughter to match her Ipod Shuffle. I recommend them for your MP3 player or any other portable music solution, or for use with your laptop when traveling. Great value, solid performers, low price.
