Portable Performance and Security
If you're still relying on your personal computer or back-up CDs or DVDs to store your digital content or vital personal or family documents, you're running an unnecessary risk. Your computer can only hold so many files and can crash at any time, leaving you helpless to access your content. DVDs and CDs have a place in archiving, but they get easily scratched and lost. It's too risky to store everything in your computer, and too time-consuming and cumbersome to have a drawer full of CDs or DVDs.
The Seagate Free Agent is big enough to store a huge portion of your digital content in a safe and secure environment, but small enough to let you take that content with you wherever you go. In other words, having the Seagate Free Agent is like having your entire computer with you at all times, but in a package that's a small fraction of the space and weight of your computer.
The sleek and slim design of this hard drive--only measures 7.5 x 1.6 x 6.4-inches (H x D x W)--and a weight of less than four pounds. The Seagate Free Agent lets you transfer files seamlessly from your computer via its USB 2.0 connection at a brisk transfer rate of up to 480Mb/sec. The drive delivers a spindle speed of 7,200 RPM, giving you the high-speed performance you need to back your data up quickly and safely.
The Seagate Free Agent is ready to use out of the box with a PC, but it can be made Mac-ready in a matter of minutes with Mac OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is already compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades.
At this compact size, and with this high performance, you now have the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, so your digital content finally has room to breathe. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind.

Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 250GB USB External Hard Drive.......2007-12-31
Order processing was fast and item received very quickly and exactly as described on the web site. Used Acronis True Image 11 Home to make a backup copy of the entire hard drive and was easy. Short time later hard drive gave up, installed new hard drive and reinstalled from the Seagate FreeAgent and was back up and running with minor delay.
Doesn't work out of the box. Don't buy!.......2007-12-29
Just purchased and it didn't work out of the box. Doesn't even turn on. Very hard to get support - there is not even a phone number for tech support in the manual, and the troubleshooting guide on the web site has dead ends with a 404 Error Message! I'd advise getting a more reliable product from a more customer friendly company.
so far so good.......2007-12-26
The only reason it doesn't have 5 stars is that I haven't had it long enough to know if there are any problems concerns. Otherwise - it is compact, very easy to use and seems to be good quality. Longer term use will prove if the quality is sustained.
thought is would be better .......2007-12-25
After connecting and I started to use as a backup, Seagate wanted to act as the primary HD, couldn't shut down or boot up my computer, had to pull the USB cable to disconnect, after getting the computer up I tried to backup but after about 5 mins it said that it couldn't backup because the drive was full.?? my data does not even exceed 20 gigs. I just packed it up and shelved it, due to possibility that if I sent it back for replacement might have all my data in it, couldn't take a chance. So I bought a WD 350Gig External HD, so far so good. thought Seagate was reliable equipment????
The best "extra" I ever bought.......2007-12-24
Ordered the drive one day, got it three days later. 15 minutes later had backed up one computer, unplugged it and on to the next on and the next. Wonderful , reasonably priced alternative to keep the stuff from all my computers. Way to go Amazon...

Even works for Dummies!.......2007-12-28
It should be illegal to sell most computer equipment to someone as technologically challenged as myself but this thing is "a piece of cake." Kinda like a big honkin' flash drive with an A/C powercord. At 500GB, I never even want to know as much info as this thing will store. Backed up EVERYTHING from my MAC on it and it was like putting a B-B in a Boxcar! For my home use, even with mountains of photos and graphics, the storage capacity of this thing is nothing short of "cavernous."
I lost over 7 years of data..........2007-12-28
I didn't knew that with a little fall over the table...obiously an accident i had, the drive just refuse to work, stopped working, cant be recognized anymore, emits a low buzzing and beeps every once in awhile....with all my data inside with no chance to return it to my pc, about 7 years of data. Then i just fell in anger and destroyed the drive...i think not even 10.000 years of warranty can cover that....BTW, no more seagate products in the future, at least not the freeagent.
Died after 1 month.......2007-12-27
Well, I lost all my data within a month. The drive just died one fine day. I cracked it open and discovered the circuit board was burnt. I thought I could atleast get my data back by putting the drive in an external enclosure. No luck there as the drive itself seems dead. Well thats the last time I buy a Seagate. There are a ton of bad reviews about this thing on the net, so be careful. Buy it only of you don't care about the data you put on it.
Seagate 500GB USB Drive.......2007-12-26
The drive was easy to connect and begin using right out of the box; 1 1/2 minutes were required to be precise to get the drive up and running. It is totally plug and go and it is powerful and fast. I'm a computer professional and it is all I expected of a external hard drive. I would buy it again.
My recommendation: buy this Seagate 500GB drive if you are in the market for a lot of extra external computer storage.
It annoys me -- find a different one........2007-12-12
I've always had good luck with Seagate drives... But this drive really sucks, I am already looking for a replacement after 2 months.
It frequently makes a loud high pitched noise.
And it frequently goes missing from my machine -- I have to power cycle the drive to get it to show up.
Get a different drive. Other reviewers seem to see similar problems.
I didn't believe them at first, but I believe them now.

Seagate ST303204FPA1E3 - 320 GB.......2007-12-28
The hard drive is exactly what I was looking for, it took absolutely no time to set up and worked right away. With a two year old child and a new camera we were producing almost a gig of digital pictures every few days. The hard drive should keep our laptop from getting bogged down.
Great 320 GB External Drive.......2007-12-22
This drive and the software included are incredible. Don't ever worry again about lost data or pictures. It looks great, too!
Great drive and value.......2007-12-19
The drive works great for me and provides an excellent value with the three interfaces for the same price as comparably-sized drives from other vendors that only include the USB connectivity. The drive is also very solid and the quality of construction speaks for itself. The main case seems to be made of anodized aluminum, which should help a good deal in dissapating heat.
The only possible hang-up that I found is that the pulsating orange color is a little different. My wife thought it was the ugliest thing she'd ever seen, but I think it's kind of cool.
So far flawless.......2007-12-12
Easy to install as 123 and had it for over 3 months no problems seems fast via firewire no complaints runs quite looks cool would by again.
Piece of Junk.......2007-12-09
The concept of this drive was good and early production may have been decent.
Newer versions are a disaster because Seagate quality control has plummeted. I've bought several of these drives in various sizes. The immediate weak spot is the modules that allow the switch from Firewire to USB and SATA.
In earlier production, the module quality was better managed. In the current production, manufacturing quality is dismal and there is no after production quality control. As a result, it is not unusual for a drive to go out with both modules NFG, i.e. DOA.
I made the mistake of buying several of these drives in larger size for backup drives. Each of them had at one module bad and some were both bad. Without them the drive is dead. If it's not dead, there's no assurance that quality control is any better on the drive. Seagate customer service is atrocious and resists replacing bad modules. If the drive is alive with one module or a borrowed module, you're forced to rob the drive of what's stored on it ... and return the whole mess. There's a an equal prospect that the drive is itself bad in which case you'll lose everything not backed up on a working drive.
Competition among drive makers is diminishing and the result is that Seagate, which once did a decent of quality control,no longer has any.

Plug & Play.......2007-12-31
This is just a quick note about the Seagate FreeAgent Pro. This thing is literally a plug and play backup system. You plug it in to an electrical outlet and to an open USB port and that is it. The backup software is already loaded on the disk drive. You can start backing up you PC in minutes. The yellow light that surrounds the drive looks cool too.
Good hard drive.......2007-12-28
I chose this hard drive because the price and size was right AND it got decent reviews on CNET.
This is a solid hard drive. It's cool looking but more importantly, it does what it's supposed to do -- i.e. store backups. There isn't anything particularly flashy about that. I've had it for roughly a month. I wouldn't expect to see any problems and I haven't.
Regarding the 'cool looking' comment... If it's important to you that your hard drive isn't an eyesore, this is an aesthetically pleasing hard drive. It's especially cool when you turn on the light. Currently you have two options regarding the orange light -- always on, always off. I would have preferred that there was an option to turn on the light only when the drive was 'active' but that's a small complaint. It looks good either way.
The software included is a trial version, good for 30 days. I believe it costs about $30 to get the full version. I have not upgraded and am not sure if I will. The software simply automates the backup process. Since it can be done relatively easy without the software, I wouldn't purchase this hard drive based on that.
I believe the ability to backup data and access it from a remote location is what distinguishes the 'Pro' line from the standard line. In retrospect, I don't believe I really need that functionality and if your data volume is large enough, Seagate charges extra. Again, since I don't currently use it, I probably would have been better off with the standard version for a few bucks less.
great hd.......2007-12-25
I biught this to use at home with my laptop
works great , and looks awesome to!
plug in works for me, less for my usb to power
Works great!.......2007-12-16
CONS: Has a slightly bulky power cord; requires reconfiguration for Mac users (but the people at Seagate will help you with that!)
PROS: Easy set up; small; quiet; has a POWER BUTTON for quick ejection.
I bought this for a video class that I'm in. I've used this tons of times, and it hasn't failed me yet. It's perfect for people who edit video, or people who just want to back up their files. I highly recommend it 5/5 :)
Junk.......2007-12-15
If you're fortunate, you'll get one that works properly out of the box.
If you're don't, you're doomed to Seagate No Support in Hades.Or if you're lucky, your retailer will take it back. But it seems silly to ship an entire drive back to Seagate and wait on a return drive that may or may not work -- just because a working drive had a bad module.
The modules in the base of these units have exceptionally poor quality control. Seagate knows it and has done nothing about it. I've had several of these and all of them had one or both modules bad. In the case of both modules dead, it could be the entire thing was DOA.
I've been a long time Seagate user and this drive is the biggest and only disappointment. It's junk. Pretty junk. But junk.

Not bad.......2007-12-29
Works well, and looks nice. I wish you didn't have to swap the interface on the bottom for USB and Firewire, but that's a minor gripe. The only thing that I really don't like is the power switch. Looks cool, but is a PITA to use.
Unique Auto Backup.......2007-12-21
The Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500 is very easy to setup. The most exciting aspect of its operation is the Auto Backup feature of the software. After the initial complete backup of whatever files you designate, individual files are backed-up when they are modified. There are no "scheduled" backups.
It's so freaking bright.......2007-12-05
I haven't had much of a chance to test it out yet. A hard drive is a hard drive. My biggest issue is with the light they decided this hard drive needed. I have an older Seagate external that I've been happy with, so I decided to buy a new Seagate. The old one had a bright blue LED indicator on the power button and that was it. I covered it with some electrical tape, problem solved. This new one lights up on the front, back, and the top. And not just a little LED indicator.. it's a nightlight, casting a dim light on everything in my room. Why do I need such a bright indicator that my external hard drive is turned on? I'd rather just check in Finder.
So the nice metallic case is now covered in duct tape to block out the light. Seagate, maybe next time, just go with a dim LED? Or some sort of switch for us people who don't care.
Great external hard drive for e-SATA with the right cable!.......2007-12-01
I read good and bad things about this hard drive, and still wanted to give it a try, because every single brand out there have good and bad reviews. I couldn't find any external drive that didn't go wrong with someone.
Anyway, it's great to store. I don't use it for any of the automatic backup and all that, I just wanted to edit video and store huge files, and for that it's a great product.
Another thing is that if you want to use the e-SATA connection, be sure to buy the right e-SATA cable!!! Some cables don't get full contact, so better buy a good brand one, like SIIG ones. You can get a expresscard to use it with your laptop in SATA.
It took me a few weeks to find this tip, so the more people knows it, the better, because i tried several Expresscards and none of them worked, and it was the cable not the cards.
Oh, and the powerup button is great, pretty cool. Some people say theirs doesn't work. I give you an advise.. just put a coin on it and it will work (maybe you don't have good enough conduction in your fingers, who knows).
It's also fanless... so you don't hear a thing.
Terrible Product.......2007-11-26
I bought this product following a friend's recommendation who had read a glowing review in one of the PC magazines. I had installed it a month ago and now Windows (Vista Premium) does not recognize the drive. It used to recognize the drive when it was first installed, but for some reason it has now ceased to. I have been using the USB connection. Contrary to the claims, the back up process is neither user friendly nor intuitive as claimed on the packaging. And to worsen matters, I did not even realize that there was on an on/off switch on this device - blame it on the very sparse documentation. When I did finally discover the on/off switch, (that switch is embedded in the metal casing) I found out that it requires considerable pressure to be turned on or off.
In retrospect, I would have been better off just buying an external hard disk and using Windows' in-built back-up software rather than plunking down $200.00 for this poorly designed but creatively marketed device

Great HDD for expanding my DirecTV HD DVR.......2007-12-31
Combined with a ESATA cable, this 750 GB HDD effectively replaces the DirecTV HD DVR's internal HDD (250 GB) in terms of memory usage. Triples the original recording capacity on my DVR; can't beat that.
Works with DirecTV HR-20 to expand space.......2007-12-31
After reading about expanding the storage space for my DirecTV HD DVR, I purchased one of these units along with a PNY e-SATA cable. Note: This unit comes with a USB cable, but NOT an e-SATA cable. There is a SIIG Serial ATA external cable availble here on Amazon that others have used successfully too....search using SIIG Serial ATA external cable - 3.3 ft ( CB-SA0111-S1 )
The combination worked perfectly. I now have three times the storage capacity on my DVR than I did before the upgrade.
For those that are curious, here's how I made it work.
1. Power down the DVR. Unplug it from the wall.
2. Connect the NOT included e-SATA cable to the back of the
3. Plug in the new Seagate and wait a minute.
4. When the new Seagate has been up and spinning for a minute or so, plug in the DirecTV DVR.
5. Wait while the DVR formats the new drive and then downloads all the needed software from the satellite.
6. Note, step 5 takes a good 5-10 minutes. You will have a blank screen for a few minutes while I assume the system is formatting the new Free Agent Drive.
After performing all these steps, it is like you just took the DVR out of the box. All your past recordings are gone, all your settings are toast. You need to tell it to record all your favorites again.
If for some reason you ever feel the need to remove this drive from your DVR. Simply power down and unplug. Restarting the DVR will cause it to use the old internal drive you had in there before. You will even see your old programs you had on it before you added the new hard drive. Note: When adding the new hard drive, the system only uses the new drive...it simply ignores the old one. It changes nothing on that drive. That's how DirecTV wants it to work as of today......
eSATA Never Worked - Now it's a door stop.......2007-12-13
I received my second RMA'ed ST307504FPA1E2-RK FreeAgent Pro 750GB with eSATA/USB2.0 interfaces back from Seagate yesterday.
Originally purchased new in June, RMA'ed in August after giving up on getting it to work with eSATA. (To be fair, it did work for awhile on its USB 2.0 interface, but I would've stayed with my existing Maxtor external drives if I'd wanted a theoretically-slower USB interface; I wanted a faster eSATA interface). Multiple tries with three different brand x1 PCIe eSATA cards and multiple brands of eSATA cables on an AMD cpu homebuild with no eSATA on mobo, and then on a newer second Intel C2D Quad homebuild with two eSATA ports on the mobo backplate. First replacement unit had same system lock-up and random going-offline problems, as did this third unit (the second RMA replacement). First unit and its RMA replacement from Seagate were factory-sealed and marked as new; the third unit from Seagate was marked "Refurbished".
I have wasted way too much time and money on return UPS charges to Seagate and multiple eSATA cables and PCIe eSATA cards. Life is too short. Seagate's won. I give up. My spirit is broken. This pig will become a very stylish doorstop. When it gets cold here in another few weeks, I'll plug its power brick in again, and it'll serve as a wonderful stand-alone space heater and night light.
In post-mortem, though,... during this five-month fiasco, I've purchased two new OEM internal WD SATA-II drives (one 750GB the other 1TB) and put them in APRICORN EZ-BUS-DTS-EKIT Aluminum 3.5" USB 2.0 & eSATA External Enclosures. Both spun up the first time on the eSATA interface, they run very quiet and cool in these cases, I integrated them easily into XP Pro, and they've worked flawlessly since as rotating daily archival backup depositories.
Of course, as always,... "Your mileage may vary". :)
DVR Upgrade for DirecTV.......2007-12-07
Yes, it works as an external HD for DirecTV's Hi-Def DVR. It will replace your internal drive. Simply unplug the DVR, start the hard drive up for a couple of minutes, then connect it via an eSata cable (not included), and fire up the DVR. This was an excellent purchase, well worth the extra storage.
I'm satisfied.......2007-12-05
I've had the Seagate Pro 750 GB external drive for 4 months now and I'm satisfied. I do not use the software included though.

Great external storage.......2007-12-30

Great little drive. Seagate Momentus 5400.3 drive inside.......2007-12-10
I just picked up one of these drives yesterday, and am happy to report it works and powers up with just one USB port on our 13" MacBook (1.83CD) & 17" MacBook Pro (2.16CD). I also tried it with a USB 2.0 cable from a Canon SD600 and it worked fine. I was also very happy to discover that the one-touch button can be configured to launch a specified app other than the Maxtor software, which is awesome if you want to use something else.
Then once I know it everything worked, against my better judgment I opened the case to look inside (using a plastic card, thinner than a credit card, to gently release the latches on each edge- and yes, VOIDING THE WARRANTY), and was happy to discover a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 SATA drive. These are solid, low-power drives- so I promptly swapped it out with the Apple OEM 60GB SATA internal drive. I snapped everything back together and it all still works like a charm.
Great physically small drive for a decent price.......2007-11-29
I bought this drive to create a clone of my iMac hard drive. I chose this model because it has the same capacity as my internal drive (both have 149GB formatted) and is small enough to go in my safe deposit box at the bank. Want to have a clone off site in case of a robbery or fire.
It has worked like a champ. Since I'm using a Mac, the software that came with the drive was of no use to me so I can't say anything about that. But the drive itself ran quietly, cool, and perfectly. Obviously, since I have only had it for a short time, I can't comment on it's reliability.
This drive uses two USB ports in order to get enough power. A twin ended USB cable is supplied. One of the ends is for both data and power, the other is used only for additional power. This way the USB port can supply all the power to run the drive without an external power supply. Cool! But bad news if you forget your cable, probably can't pick one up at your local store.
USB not working.......2007-11-08
Bought this drive 2 days ago, everything worked fine out of the box. Went on a trip and forgot the provided USB 2.0 cable so I went to Office Depot and bought an aptiva USB 2.0 cable. The drive will not work with the generic cable, not sure why. Plugged in my digital camera using the same cable and the camera's storage card shows up fine. I will test the drive with the original cable when I get home, hopefully it still works! Maxtor tech support website is horrible, don't even bother going there for product support.

Excellent Fast and Ultra Portable External Travel Drive.......2007-12-15
First of all I love Seagate and in recent years have only bought Seagate. They're indestructible and I've simply had no problems whatsoever with their drives over the past 10 years.
I've always wondered why they stopped making the predecessor of these mini FreeAgent drives - they were small, black and silver, incredibly durable and just looked really cool on my desk ( I have three). And, you could stack them!! I mean in my opinion, they had really nailed the portable drive case/presentation. It had ultimate protection, cooling, design and it oozed the ipod "coo
