Excellent Value and Easy Setup
Unlike other network-attached storage (NAS) devices, the SC101 does not come with any drives but requires you to purchase your own. This allows for considerable cost savings. Opening up the SC101 only requires turning a latch that can be done with a quarter; no tools are needed. Attach the power connectors and IDE cables, set the jumpers, and slide the drive into place, and that's it.
After the hard drives are installed, plug the device in, attach it to the network, and install the included software. The software guides you through setup step by step. When everything is ready to go, it looks like a new hard drive has been installed on your PC and you use it just as you would any other hard drive. Backup software is included for users who don't already have their own preferred software. Please note that the SC101 is only compatible with Windows machines and won't work with Macs or Linux.
Outstanding Performance with Various Storage Options
The SC101 connects to your network via a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection for fast data transfers. When you connect two drives to the device, you have the option of having them "mirrored" or "spanned." Mirrored storage lets you keep two copies of every file, one on each drive, so that everything is backed up in case of drive failure. When two drives are set to span, they appear as one volume so they are easy to work with and the device will automatically find your data across both drives.

Terrible software, and so I would avoid.......2007-12-29
I've had the SC101 for about 9 months now, but have finally decided to remove it from my system and go with non-networked USB drives instead. The software that controls this box (which MUST be installed in order to access it) is very poorly implemented - I would say circa 1990 (Windows 3.0) quality, if that.
The deciding factor for me was when the firmware upgrade aspect of the software (which the software prompts you to run ***each*** time you open it) crashed during the firmware upgrade. If you don't know the significance of such a crash, the answer is short: likely inability to access the device or any of the data stored on either drive inside. In my case, the unit was still functional after the firmware upgrade crash, but I am not willing to risk continuing to use it.
BAD PRODUCT....Had to go another route!.......2007-12-23
I bought this product about a year ago. After six months I had a computer failure. I was relying on this product as a backup for all my personal files. When I went to re-attach the drive to restore my files, the unit failed. My computer could see the SC101 on th network, but it showed no available drives to attach. I was finally able to reformat and start over, but lost ALL my data.
Well, 3 months later.......it happened again. Now I am buying a simple HDD enclosure. I won't be able to use it on the network but at least I will be able to salvage my hard drive.
PATHETIC!.......2007-12-23
Software/driver has tons of bugs. I bought it when it first came out and it just seemed like I was testing the prodcuting and providing feedback to tech support.
When it shuts off, sometimes it does not come back online. I have to unplug it and re-plug for it to come back online. It took about 6 months for netgear to come out with firmware that was compatible with Windows Vista.
It only takes IDE hard drives. All the new drives out there are SATA. I'm going to auction it off and get probably the D-Link network storage.
Poorly engineered product.......2007-12-12
This item is portrayed as a Network attached storage device. It is not! The only way to access the drives in the unit is with Netgear's software, which by the way does not work to well. The SC101 kept detaching itself even with the current firmware and could not be re-attached unless you re-booted the unit. I am returning the SC101 for a refund.
SC101 heating.......2007-12-10
I did not read all SC101 reviews before I acquired a unit with 2-250Gb drives on Ebay. That was fortunate as I had no problems with the install or firmware / software upgrades. I have a DSL modem/WiFi router in my basement. A Cat5 cable runs to a router in my basement lab, and another Cat5 cable runs to my second floor office. 3 computers are connected in my office, plus a WiFi laptop, and 4 computers in my lab. The SC101 is connected to the office router. All computers access SC101 files like it was a local drive, and I have had no problems. File access and transfer speeds are adequate for my needs.
I did find heat generation to be alarming, so I removed the drives and electronics and modified the case. I drilled about 60 .0625 diameter holes between the top heat sink ribs. Then I bored a 2" hole in the center of the bottom and epoxied a modified 12 volt 2" computer fan (part of frame removed) into the hole. I drive the fan with a 9 volt power adapter for reduced RPM and minimized noise. That helped a lot, but I found that standing the SC101 on its 'nose', with the cable end up, made this even better. This places the electronics end down, so I presume that a lot of heat comes from the electronics and is removed by the fan arrangement.

I purchased the SC101 as a filestore for my friends lawfirm and set it up about a year ago. Boy was it the worst thing I ever did for his business. I remember the install being a rather unfriendly process. A few days ago his Admin calls me and tells me they are having some synch trouble, but the files are still there. So I go in yesterday and upgrade the firmware and PC software as per the instructions on [...] .
The damn thing set the drive size to 0 MB and killed the partition. Tech support told me the device was defective and outside warranty even though just prior to upgrading the files were there. Now the law firm has lost all of its client files that were on there.
Do yourself favor and dont get this thing. If you want to throw money away paypal it to me!
Not bad for it's intended use........2007-08-08
I've had a Netgear SC101 for about nine months, and I really haven't had any serious issues with it. Setup took about ten minutes, tops, to pop in two hard drives, connect the unit, and install the software.
I use the unit as a Raid 1 mirrored network drive mapped as a drive letter. The only issue I've ever had was after upgrading the firmware a few months back. I couldn't access my drives for a few minutes, but it righted itself before I had a heart attack, so no harm done.
This is really a "set it and forget it" box that you never have to even think about. There's not even a power button. It powers on and off with your UPS or power supply with no problems.
There are a few limitations to the box that may affect some users, so you need to know a few things going in.
1. There is a proprietary software required to see the drives. That makes it basically idiot-proof to manage, but it imposes some restrictions you might not be comfortable with. For that reason, the box is not ideal for sharing files among a large number of users, though you can just share the SC101 drive on one network PC and allow everyone else to access it that way. But even though that will work, there are much cleaner solutions out there. Similarly, the data is stored in a proprietary format as well, so you can't pop out a drive and use it in another machine without reformatting. That means if the whole thing dies, you need another box similar to this one to recover the data on the drive (but then again, this is at best a Raid-1 box anyway, so you ought to have a separate backup if it's truly important stuff...)
2. The unit lacks the extras that many other NAS devices are coming out with. There are no built-in USB ports, no print server, no FTP server, etc. This is a no fills box.
All of the products on the market have their sweet spots. For the SC101 the sweet spot is providing upgradeable storage with Raid 1 capability with the least user effort, and no frills. For that, it's a pretty good little product, and it looks like a toaster.

RAID 1 NAS with ZERO Performance.......2007-12-24
The intent was to create a RAID repository to back up critical files, occasionally do a full system back up and have a shared space for my wireless home network. So I bought it and installed two new Seagate Barracuda Hard Drives. After struggling for some time with the setup software (and not being able to connect to the Netgear site for recent updates) I finally got this working (sort of) after 2 hours. I figured this was my learning curve and I'd only have to do this once so, oh well. Then I started building the virtual drives. They would appear and disappear randomly and sporadically. Then, when I'd reboot my system or the drive or my router (due to poor performance of any and all) the fragile "mirrors" would break. There is no facility to restore a broken mirror which makes this feature absolutely worthless because that is one of the first things I would want to do if I had an actual physical drive failure. The NAS was definitely a drag on system/network performance so I would leave it unplugged (no off switch either). After finally hunting down some firmware upgrades through repeated Google searches for technical articles (and possible consolation from others experiencing the same agony) I went through a whole re-install process and started from scratch. I'd like to say the results were even a marginal improvement but they weren't. Fortunately I was able to unload this on the web, buy a single drive NAS from Vantec (doing CD/DVD backups of my most critical files like digital photos) and haven't looked back since.
