i've had it for a year, and it still works great. it comes with a power sharing cable to attach to a second usb port, but i've never needed to use it.

4 out of 5 stars NOT plug and play for Vista.......2007-12-27

Despite the installation guide's instructions to the contrary, this drive is NOT plug and play if you have Vista. You have to download a driver from the install CD. Also, you may want to convert it to NTFS as it arrives as FAT32.

5 out of 5 stars Looks good and runs great.......2007-12-21

I bought this little hard drive in September for my senior design project which was expected to require portable storage for a large number of videos and photographs. I ended up using it for a lot more than just that one class and have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it over the course of this past semester.

The drive is compact and has one USB 2.0 port and an additional USB port for powering the device should you wish to connect to a computer that does not have USB 2.0 power sharing ports. The necessary cables are included with the drive. The orange rubber "bumper" is very shock absorbant and is removable with one face that is open to allow access to the ports. The user can remove the orange rubber "bumper" and put it back on such that the ports are covered up. This is very useful when transporting the drive around campus as the weather in east Tennessee is very unpredictable. Also, my backpack can get rather messy, so I appreciated the ability to better protect the ports.

The drive does run hot sometimes, but that's to be expected as it does not have a fan to keep cool. It's held up very well, and there was no indication that it suffered any damage the one time I accidentally dropped it in the computer lab, not even a scratch in the plastic casing. I've been very impressed with it so far and intend to continue using it for a very long time.

Lastly, I don't know what to make of the reviewer who mentioned it ruining his firewire port when he plugged it in because this drive only has a USB 2.0 port and the additional "power USB" port.

1 out of 5 stars LaCie drive fried my fire wire port.......2007-03-28

I plugged the drive into my fire wire and it destroyed my fire wire port. I called LaCie and they will replace the drive but won't fix my computer. They said it was most likely a short in the drive or cable and their warranty doesn't cover my laptop. Way to stand behind your product guys! So in short I spent almost $300 dollars to have my laptop damaged by this drive and who knows how much repairs will be. I will NEVER buy a LaCie product again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Choice out there.......2007-12-26

After trying a Maxtor harddrive and having the indexing on my mac so screwed up i had to erase everything and reboot the operating system, I went for teh most reliable thing out there. After a bit of research I heard teh Lacie drive was best--and they even USE them in the Apple stores. It works, is quite, and is well worth the cost. it comes with 3 types of cables too. buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Storage Solution... So Far.......2007-12-26

I recently purchased the LaCie 160 and have successfully (and easily) transferred about 20 gb of data from my computer's hard drive and my old collection of Iomega Zip Disks using my Apple PowerBook G4. The transfers were all accomplished without any problems, and at a pretty fast rate. I've also moved some files from CDs that I've burned, to simplify the task of finding old files. The LaCie is a good looking, compact unit that I hope will reliably store my files for a long, long time. I like the fact that it doesn't require any external power sources when plugged into my PowerBook using a firewire connection. A friend has recommended that I still burn CDs to back-up important files, since the lifespan of a mechanical Hard Drive is less than a CD. But I feel a lot more confident that the files I place in the LaCie will be more safely saved than the files I previously stored on Zip Disks. I highly recommend this LaCie hard drive storage device. On a Mac, it's easy to set up and easy to use.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2007-12-23

After dropping my beautiful, but evidently not very rugged lacie porsche drive and finding that it was instantly dead, I needed a new portable drive with decent capacity to shuttle between the office and home. (I keep an evolving backup on the portable drive, and keep all the machines in sync this way)
The rugged drive seemed like a good bet-- a little expensive and small in storage capacity, but maybe a little more robust than the porsche drive, to fulfill a similar purpose.
The pros:
-- it's quiet
-- both USB and firewire, and bus powered
-- I'm hoping that it's robust to a short drop, but not planning on testing this...

The cons:
-- only in orange. I don't mind orange, but I liked the silver porsche drive, and wouldn't have minded a less conspicuous design for this one.
-- the rubber surrounding is kind of loose, it's really just wrapped around the sides, not very huggy at all. this struck me as totally cheap and disappointing. it's just a little drive in this "scarf", kind of like the bumpers were tacked on as an afterthought :(
-- it gets very hot, much hotter than the porsche drive did.
-- for USB bus power, you have to plug in two USB cables. a real hassle on a powerbook with USB ports on opposite sides. :(

Overall, I'm satisfied with its functionality, but don't find much to be excited about. I had been hoping to see some innovative designs, larger capacities, and price reductions in the portable drive market since the last time I bought one a few years ago, but this drive has very much a status quo kind of feel.

5 out of 5 stars Fast!.......2007-10-18

I am using this drive as an extension of my MacBook Pro. I use it for only two purposes: to hold 80G of iTunes music, and as a scratch disk for Final Cut Express.

When I got the drive, I decided to run an informal test. I moved 6GB of music from my MBP to a USB 2.0 drive. I then moved the same files to the LaCie using the FW800 cable. As should be the case, the drive took exactly half the time of the USB.

It's my first LaCie product. It's fast. It's quiet. I'm happy.

1 out of 5 stars Buy a different drive.......2007-10-17

The drive's performance via USB 2.0 for read and write is way below par for other drives in this price range.

I've tested this drive on my Mac Book Pro and WIndows XP machines and on both platforms, the drive is much slower than my other external drives(G-Drive minis).

It seems that the extra slow 5400 RPM hard drives in this enclosure causes a real performance hit.

I have also experienced on multiple occassions, that the drive didn't actually successfuly copy files over. It would appear to copy but then nothing would appear on the drive.

In the end, I would pick from another vendor.

The cheap rubber thing also doesn't protect the drive. It just looks nice.

Beyond that, this drive is junk.

3 out of 5 stars Does the job.......2007-11-26

I've never had any major problems with this drive. I use it primarily to store music and so I play my libraries directly from the drive on different laptops. I never have delays when streaming music off, but when initially accessing the drive or hopping around inside folders there is always a slight response delay, hence the 3 stars. I've used other portable external drives with less downtime. The size and rubber edging is great- you can toss it around in a large bag without a second thought.

5 out of 5 stars Great portable drive.......2007-11-04

This is a very stylish light weight drive that works great with USB. I've had no problems with it and I don't even notice it my my backpack because of it's size and weight. I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars The software is the rub.......2007-10-29

The LaCie 80GB Rugged All-Terrain External Hard Drive is great for what it does. The set-up was easy, and I had no problems with backing up my data. The software that comes with the HD doesn't quite have enough features for my liking. When you back-up your data, it copies everything you want backed-up, even if it hasn't changed. What would have been nice is a feature that backs-up data that is newly added/changed. If you have a lot of data (photos, mp3s, etc.) each back-up can take a while.

1 out of 5 stars Awful..only worked once........2007-09-26

OK; I had quite a battle with this little thing. I kept getting a power surge error on the USB port this drive was connected to. Even by using another USB port for extra power (as instructed in the documentation), I could not get this to work. I had another software engineer try it on his PC as well. Only 1 time did I ever get my PC to recognize this device and NOT get the power surge warning. Never again did it work. I also tried it on a brand new Dell laptop with no luck. It was truly a bad purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Does the Job.......2007-09-21

My fiance and I bought this earlier this year with the purchase of our new computer and we're happy with the product. It's easy to use, copies files quickly and offers a safety option to avoid damaging your hard drive/computer when disconnecting. We also enjoy the distinct look of the hard drive, fitted with a shock resistant rubber bumper so you can take it with you, and it's compatible with Vista.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this.......2007-05-03

I bought this hard drive after reading the wonderful reviews thinking it would solve some of my data transfer issues. I wanted to use this as a storage device that I could switch between a MacBook and a PC. First, if you want to switch between operating systems, you have to buy a program (MacDrive) for each PC that you want to connect to, which LaCie does not advertise. I've had this drive for ~4mo and have had nothing but problems with it for the last 2mo. I've lost data and time due to using this device. It's crashed at least once, which caused all of my files to be rearranged or lost. It's been difficult to move large files off of the device (it often times out while using the USB port), and it randomly corrupts files that were just transferred onto it it. This has been extremely frustrating and I would not recommend this product to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars High Quality Product.......2007-04-29

This drive is not as slim as other pocket drives and it costs a bit more. But the extra size is due to its additional padding, including a rubber pumper all around. You get 3 interface choices (USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800) plus a port for USB power. It comes with cables for all 4. It is a great companion to my MacBook Pro because I can use the very fast Firewire 800 interface. It is a very utilitarian drive, one that you can throw into your backpack and go. In this case you definitely get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Durable from Abusive College Student.......2006-09-25

First, this HD words fine on 4 PCs and my Macbook Pro G5. Not all computers can power portable devices, so check your manual first or test something else out on it. Even a 3 year old Sony laptop powered it.

Ruggedness:

This thing takes a likin and keeps on tickin. I'm a college student and wanted to be able to edit pictures on-the-go instead of confined into my room, but still maintain speed, reliability, and size. I use it almost exclusively for my Aperture photo library, and I must say it its quite fast. I've dropped it a few times and throw it in my computer backpack with my MacBook Pro and its with throughout the day around my campus.

I got it because of the sturdiness and the fact that's its one of the few portable, but powered FW800 drives, allowing fast transfers with large files, as well as daisychaining other devices to it without slowdown in speed; I have confirmed this through my own informal testing with 100gb transfers. I love that there is no AC adapter but its just as fast as most external powered drives, except maybe my Lacie RAID drive at home.

With Photoshop and Aperture:

If you've ever gone into the Photoshop settings, you'll notice it recommends to have a scratch disk separate from the disk Photoshop is on. Also, most pros know to have even the pictures on a separate disk for optimal speed. Aperture and Photoshop go must faster with this disk hooked up, since the built in drive isn't bouncing around between Photoshop, system, and picture files. Also, since Aperture views and manipulates a lot of photos at once, I've notices a serious speed advantage when using FW400, FW800, and USP in my own testing with this drive.

Triple Interface:

The FW800 is fantastic. I hook it to my big external raid drive at home. You can actually daisychain another device to it, either a FW400 or FW800, depending on the port you use. The other device can be powered too. So you don't necessarily need a second FW800 like on bigger hard drives to do daisychaining.

I've hooked my Rugged HD directly to my notebook, with a big hard drive hooked to that, with my scanner and printer hooked to the big hard drive. Meaning, I have 4 devices hooked to my itty bitty HD without loss of speed: yup, while printing, I still got transfer speeds of almost 60mb per second.

This also means I don't need to use a hub.

Speed Testing:

This depends for every HD; 1GB of little files transfers faster than one 1GB file. But I get between 35mb and 60mb per second on 100gb transfers. My old Firelite USG got about 12-15mb per/s, and a more modern cheap Western digital got 20-25. There is a difference between all three interfaces. My Lacie RAID gets up to 80mb/sec.

Overall:

Yes it's a little pricey, but the thing is fast and durable. Plus, the much more fragile G-Techs, the only other big name FW800 portable drives, are even more money. If you need something that goes with you on the go quite frequently and is fast, this is the drive for you. And if your notebook had FW800, don't skip out on spending the extra money on this one. The HD is a little bigger than most portable HD, but it has more airspace inside to protect the disk from impact. To most people, the size difference isn't that noticeable.

Oh yes, and the rubber ring stays on secure, but is pretty easy to take off, and has screws going around so you can probably put a bigger drive into it in the future.

2 out of 5 stars Needs Wall Power.......2006-05-25

Do not buy this drive if you're looking for portability in the field. It did not mount on my Mac PowerBook G4 without an additional AC adapater, not included. LaCie tech service sent one at no charge, but this defeats the purpose of their "rugged" "all-terrain" product.

3 out of 5 stars Drive works fine but is not portable........2007-05-31

Upon receiving the drive in the mail, I attempted to plug it into my Gateway desktop computer with the USB cable included with the package. The device was recognized but I was unable to access it as a usable drive. Figuring that the the stand-alone USB cable was not providing sufficient power, I connected the additional USB power cable (which was also included with the package). Again the device was not listed as an available drive. I repeated these same steps on my Dell laptop computer with no success.
I emailed technical support at LaCie and they made several troubleshooting suggestions, which did not help either. Finally, I requested that LaCie send me the optional AC power adapter which can be used in place of the USB power cable. They sent me the power adapter at no extra charge and this solved the problem. The device now has sufficient power and is recognized as an available drive. The drive has been working fine, however, the major downside is that it is no longer portable since it requires AC power. I was disappointed with the initial performance of the drive but I was satisfied by the response of LaCie in meeting my request.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy Lacie Products.......2007-04-06

I have owned this model for two months and have used it nearly every day without incident, until this morning. I did not drop my hard drive, slam it, nothing. If anything, I've coddled it. It simply stopped working (just stopped mounting to the desktop although it still sounds like it is on). I have attempted to fix permissions and do a disk repair but it will not let me fix either due to volume issues. Computer experts that I have consulted have told me its not even fixable even were I to clear it out for work in the future. I have lost nearly 70 gigs of work, nearly my entire graduate school portfolio, etc. This was a backup for another LaCie hard drive-the porsche designed one- and that one too simply stopped working suddenly after a year or so of solid performance. My backup and the backup to the backup, both LaCie, are toast. I will never buy a single LaCie product again. It is such a drag when the products you rely upon, that you pay good money for, are not reliable. Don't rely upon the nice pictures of this either, the design is rather flimsy, especially the container which feels quite thin. The orange rubber thing is largely a joke. It hangs loose, etc. The sorry thing is that if you had asked me a week ago how I felt about this product, I would have said that the triple interface was great, esp. b/c of the FW800 as this model seems to be the only portable drive with an 800. So for whatever that's worth, there it is. Too bad the same cannot be said for the three months of new work I had stored on there and the older work from the last two years.

4 out of 5 stars Good tool for the job and home.......2007-03-14

I like this hard drive because it works with the imacs in my school lab. I can plug and play. I can store a lot of stuff. It has firewire and usb connectivity. I accidentally dropped it while it was running and attached to my laptop but it still worked after that. I can throw it in my backpack whenever I am on the run.

1 out of 5 stars LaCie Rugged 80 gig triple interface.......2007-03-13

Bought in June 2006 and got it installed without too much problem.
Every 2 months or so hooked it up to Dell Inspiron 9100 for file back ups.
The 1st and 2nd times I did this I had to re-start computer or do something again to get its icon on the laptop to transfer data. The 3rd time in March 2007, I hooked it up, the external drive got hot and never connected to the laptop. I will NEVER purchase another LaCie product; NEVER had these problems with an HP external hard drive. Moral;buy HP external drives and SHORT lac.pa ! Nuff said. Who has time for this !

1 out of 5 stars did not work.......2007-02-19

This item caused a USB power surge and did not work upon initial try. I also plugged in the supplied USB/power cord and it still did not work. I have a 2004 Dell Inspiron 6oom that obviously does not supply enough power at the USB to run these portable drives. I have no intention of using it connected to the desk top as this is supposed to be portable and run off the laptop battery. I will return it and look for the largest flash-memory available.
