Best Overall 500Gb External Hard Disk.......2007-12-30
I just got one of these quads a month ago and I love it. Some say it's noisy. Yes, it makes some read/write noises, but not so much more than most other brands. This is a very fast drive, it runs cool, has every type of interface you'd want from the super fast eSATA and FW800, to the slow USB 2.0, and easily fits into the LaCie desktop rack LaCie sells (you can stack up to four of them horizontally in this rack). I've been using LaCie 250 Gb drives for three years now and have had absolutely no problems with any of them. Sometimes I'll go months without using one of them, but when I do they spin right up and exhibit no problems whatsoever. I am one who makes multiple backups, though, so just in case one of my drives wigs out on me I have another copy. No one should rely on just one copy or backup. That's just begging for trouble!
Great external drive!.......2007-12-29
This is a great, sturdy external drive. I have purchased and used about 6 externals over the years, starting with SCSI, then USB, etc. This drive is rock solid, built like a tank (weighs about 3 pounds) and has four interfaces so it will work on anything. I run it on a Mac using Firewire 800. I pulled it out of the box, slid on the bottom plate, plugged it in and it works perfectly, as LaCie products always do. It's rackable if you desire. The aluminum case cools it well - the first thing I did was to clone my 300 GB hard drive to it (takes about 4 hours on a Mac because cloning is much slower than copying) and the drive got only slightly warm. It's quiet. The auto power feature is nice (powers down when not in use). I haven't tried the one-touch button yet but it's an intriguing feature. This drive also comes with all the cables you need (eSata, USB, firewire 400 and firewire 800, and power). Many drives don't give you all the cables and they add a lot to the total cost. This unit is ready out of the box. Can't go wrong with this one.
lacie.......2007-12-27
so far so good. the lacie hard drive has been easy to use & set up.
Easy Setup, No Hassle.......2007-12-25
I'm using three of these drives for Time Machine backup on machines running Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard). They've worked flawlessly for several weeks now.
Great out-of-the-box for Time Machine.......2007-12-25
I purchased this LaCie drive specifically as insurance, to put Leopard's Time Machine to use. Within a few minutes, I had everything unpackaged, set up, and doing my first backup. The quad interface might be overkill in my case (I'm using the FireWire-800 on a new iMac), but there is another computer in the house on which I might need to use the FireWire-400, should I ever get around to it.
Some other reviewers have complained about excessive noise, but everyone's tolerance level is different. My old computer was easily several magnitudes louder than this, although I must admit that the LaCie is the loudest thing on the desktop (the iMac is extremely quiet).
If you're interested in Time Machine numbers: I have about 46GB of spaced used on my main drive; I am on the computer every single day, mostly for e-mail, music, browsing, and documents (including some work in a VMWare Fusion virtual installation of Windows); and after about a month, there is about 85GB of spaced used on the LaCie for Time Machine backups. At this rate, I ought to be able to have at least a year's worth of backups before Time Machine will begin automatically deleting the oldest items.

LaCie d2 Quadra750GB.......2007-12-21
Although i've only had it less than a month, it is working great. I already owned a d2 Quadra 320GB but wanted a bigger drive for Apple OS Leopard Back-up. Plug and play and works great. 800 Firewire is very fast.
EXCELLENT!.......2007-12-11
I have seen many external hard drives, but these blow the competition away. The case feels like a tank. The hard drives have been extremely reliable. When it comes to connection options, you can not really get better. I would give it 6 stars out of 5 if I could. I am very pleased.

Not sure about these reviews. I've had the LaCie for over 2 years now without a problem. Wondering if these people are beating them to death or something. It works fantastic with multiple differenct ports depending on what I want for speed, or just my mood! Auto turn on is great. Actually, I think I know THE problem ...... the bad reviews are using pc's ...... these work GREAT on the MAC ...... the REAL computer!

Great Drive.......2007-07-27
After I hooked this drive up (easy as pie) to my Mac, it started making an awful fan noise. I called LaCie and Beach Camera to see what they could do for me. Both companies were very acommodating, polite and eager to provide service. LaCie is where I sent it since they paid postage both ways. Within 2 weeks the drive came back fixed and quiet, very quiet. I would like to compliment LaCie and their customer service department for the timely, polite and fast service. I highly recommend LaCie to anyone shopping for external hard drives. The only thing I am disappointed in is the "auto" on/off setting on the power switch does not automatically turn the drive on and off when I have it hooked up to FW800 and also have FW400 items connected to my Mac. When those are disconnected, the "auto" function works perfectly. This drive is quiet, fast and versatile. Well worth every penny.
Only 465GB of Useable Space.......2007-07-01
I was disapointed to find that the manufacturers rounded up 35GB to call it a 500GB drive...
but other than that this drive is great.
It stayed cool even though I had it on for about eight hours the first day, and the "auto" power setting (which puts it in a rest mode when not in use) seems to work well.
Nice design too: it makes my other externals look like bulky hunks of plastic.
.
Works Well, Great Value.......2007-06-25
I researched hard drives for a while before buying the LaCie D2 500GB Quadra. I'm using it with Logic & Pro Tools, often with a MacBook Pro, so I needed the FW800, and so far it has been working great. It's fairly quiet and easy to use and isn't overly bulky. It looks like a regular hard drive, nothing fancy; I do like that it can be vertical or on it's side... LaCie includes little rubber feet for the bottom if you wish to do this. The other models I considered were the G-Tech 500GB (almost twice the cost for the same features, but only 8MB cache) and the LaCie Little Big Disk (half the size, twice the cost, with smaller HD size). For the money I don't think there's a better hard drive available.
LaCie d2 Quadra same plus better.......2007-06-13
The LaCie d2 500GB Quadra hard drive is the same easy mount, high powered external storage device as earlier models. It's also even better as a quieter, cooler, and speedier unit able to perform without a glitch for hours of video editing.
