This product does everything that I needed from Norton Ghost. And it costs half as much as Norton Ghost and costs half as much. Plus it includes a nice laptop compatible drive enclosure.
It can easily move existing hard drives to image files stored on USB drives. It does this much better than Norton Ghost 12, which often crashes in the middle. The CD-ROM is bootable, so it copies outside of windows. The bootable disk worked fine with all USB drives that I used.
I use it to upgrade hard drives as well as create sector level backups of my Windows computers.

This upgrade product rocks! I used this kit to upgrade my 3-year old Gateway M320 40gb hard drive to WD 120 Scorpio. Total time (after reading the instructions carefully) from chkdsk and defrag old drive to swapping in new drive and successful bootup--2 1/2 hours. An anxious moment when the initial bootup takes a while, then joy to see this product did exactly what it says it will do!! Looking forward to try the other features of the software, and using the old drive for backups and extra storage!!

Steps:
1. Install the software.
2. Put a blank harddrive in the provided enclosure.
3. Run the software (note that you do not need to have a CD drive connected to the computer to do this part).
4. Swap the hard drive in the enclosure for the one in your laptop.
You are done! The whole process (for a full 40GB harddrive) took about 1 hour. The old drive can now be used for storage with the enclosure.
A Product That Actually Does What the PR Says It Will!!.......2007-12-03
I was having problems with my ZD7058 HP Notebook. It took forever to do anything, and sometimes it couldn't boot up. I had been nursing the hard drive along by marking the bad sectors and moving the data for some time.
I ordered this Apricorn product to attempt to recover the old drive to a new and slightly larger drive (80gb to 120gb). Thanks to Norton's Go Back I was able to get my PC to a bootable configuration and started the Apricorn software. Follow the instructions with the unit. I was a little apprehensive while it was running because it made slow progress (3 or 4 hours) for an 80gb drive.
The biggest surprises were after it finished. What had occupied 49gb of space on the old drive only occupied 36gb on the new drive. Boot up is much faster and everything runs faster than it had before. I hadn't realized how bad the old drive had become. I have not detected anything missing/lost by the transfer and the speed increase is like buying a new PC.
FIVE STARS for doing what it says it will do. It's now been more than a month since the cloning, and still nothing missing or corrupted. As my title says "A Product That Actually Does What The PR Says It Will!!".
DISCLAIMER: Does not come with a new drive. You must buy that seperately. The Apricorn EZ Upgrade Kit will do the rest.
Not compatible with Toshiba MK163GSX.......2007-11-17
The 160GB 5400 RPM 2.5 SATA HD from Toshiba does not fit or align with this device. And I can't return it... I will remember to read the fine print in the future. On the other hand, a disk migration maybe something people do once... and then return the device, so this non-return policy has some merit.

After storage space became tight, I upgraded from my three or four year old 60gb full size Firewire external backup.
Id consider myself a fairly advanced technology user and I usually don't purchase things out of hand. I took a leap in this case, having read nothing but positives about this product and so far I have to agree totally.
To the point, it is what it is. Sitting at near the size of a pack of playing cards (and as thin), the design is clean with a nice alcove to fit the Firewire cable. An excellent choice for laptop use and need for minimal clutter. It is pure function, just plug and play with the small blue LED to show operation. Arrives with several feet of additional Firewire mating cable for longer reach, a snug synthetic sleeve to keep the drive clean and dry, and utility software. I haven't used the software yet, keeping the drive in the home office, but it covers just about any need you could have (in some cases multi options for the same application).
A friend brought up the point that more bang for the buck would include a terabyte drive and comparable external shell. This is true and Id considered it but sometimes form, function, and convenience override storage capacity and the Aegis is good example of this.

I bought this firewire drive on the recommendation from my computer geek friend. It works great, and I really like the built-in firewire for connecting to my laptop. No extra cables are needed, although a longer one (about 3') is included.

Full 120 GB capacity. Very fast - 31-32 MB/sec sustained. Absolutely quiet. Handy portable size, and the cord wrap slot for the Firewire cable is very useful. Cable is short, though - just six inches or so. Self-powered feature puts this unit ahead of the others using an external adapter.

This is the easiest portable hard drive I have ever owned. Plugging right into my mac book via firewire, the computer recognized it without any downloads. It was so easy to drag and drop files, pictures and music onto this storage unit. I use it daily to access my iphoto library which I now keep exclusively on the aegis to save space on my laptop. Highly recommended!!!!

I guess if you had a xp system it would of worked great I was upgrading vista and I could not get it to work with vista and could not find any new updates in the apricon website I am not going to put down the product all I am saying it just doe not work well with vista upgrade.

I upgraded my Dell XPS 1710 laptop from a 100GB,7200rpm 2.5" SATA HDD; to a 200GB, 7200rpm 2.5" SATA HDD. The process went perfectly and I DO have Vista. I don't know what this other guy that posted it didn't work with Vista was doing but it definately wasn't correct. If you have problems running programs in Vista, right-click on the application, select "run as Windows XP" under the Compatability tab and that will work. I didn't have to do that however and the program worked fine. Great tool!

Product does exactly what it is supposed to do. Instructions are clear, everything is simple, everything you need is included. Upgraded my notebook drive from 120GB to 250GB without a hitch, and ended up with a fast 120GB 2.5" external USB drive as a bonus.
One glitch - the partition backup/restore part of the EZGig software could not make a bootable copy of Windows XP. This does not affect the drive replacement utility of the kit, which works perfectly. But it would be a nice extra to be able to back up and restore working copies of ever-so-fragile Windows.
does not work with Vista.......2007-07-29
Nice little package and super easy - but be warned - it does NOT work with Vista nor does their website have a patch. Nonetheless, I did the BIOS version on Vista machine and was able to backup all data, then the boot failed on the backup drive. I was able to patch it with the Vista DVD repair, but YMMV - you'll need the Vista original disk. It worked for me but it is somewhat risky. I do wish they would better disclose the Vista compatability problem.

I recently got an iBook with only a cd-rom drive. This product looked perfect in the description stating that it works with macs and an os earlier than mine. I plugged the drive into my laptop and it wasn't recognized at all. When I plugged it into my PC, it worked perfectly. I will be returning this and continuing my search for an external drive compatable with my mac, but if you have a PC, it is a very nice product.

I'm highly recommending Apricorn. It's known for its reliability and moderately priced drives. A top review at PCWorld turned me on to the company. I decided to purchase directly from Apricorn; their pricing is reasonable. The drive's fan is almost silent; speed is as advertised. There's absolutely nothing complicated here ... just plug it in. That's it! It comes with a nice back-up package of disk imaging, cloning, and encryption software for both mac and windows. The directions for these were uncomplicated. No software is needed, but it's nice to have scheduled back-ups that Apricorn's selected software package provides. If or when I ever have a problem with this drive, I'll return. No news is good news.

Perfect and Rugged Drive, Plus Upgradable!.......2007-05-03
I bought this drive when WD's MyBook Premium dropped the ball on installing itself in WinXP systems. This thing is bulletproof and you just plug it in and it WORKS. The fan is relatively quiet and the sturdy aluminum chassis keeps the drive cool. I went ahead and popped in a 320GB drive into my unit and it worked perfectly once I partitioned the drive in WinXP.
The only thing you'll want to do is turn off the unit monthly and open the case to blow out the dust that accumulates on the inside of the unit. You might need to do this less often if you don't have pets...
I can't recommend this unit enough and I'll always choose Apricorn over Western Digital because of this little gem.

Ordered one from Zipzoomfly, paid for 2 day delivery, they charged my credit card. Two days later another item I ordered arrived. Not the hard drive. Called zipzoomfly. Zipzoomfly informs me that they didn't have it in stock even though Zipzoomfly's web site shows it stock. When asked why Zipzoomfly didn't let me know it wasn't in stock or why Zipzoomfly didn't let me know they were only shipping one of the two items I paid for and Zipzoomfly's email said was shipping, Zipzoomfly responded they would have notified me later. Really? Like I wouldn't have figured out Zipzoomfly didn't send it when the package arrived. Zipzoomfly used to provide good service. Not anymore. Plus when I searched the web today, one three different shopping sites, Zipzoomfly is still advertising they have them in stock. Stay away from Zipzoomfly.

THE WORST INVESTMENT I EVER MADE..........2007-10-03
Crashed after 4 days. Lost all data on the hard drive. Contacted customer service at Aegis, you would think that someone would care to answer !!! Of course not, why answer the customer, once he has bought this piece of junk and it has crashed, why should anyone at Aegis care.
I would not recommend this hard drive even if it was the only hard drive available in the market

I have owned two of these, both defective. Lost all my data the first time around. Wrote email to customer service, no reply from anyone. Suggest a more reliable product like Western Digital, your data is really too important to risk it with this product.

I can only second the previous review. I'd buy one again even if a little more expensive than other drives. the built in cable is neat, and there is no compatibility trouble whatsoever with my G4 powerbook. usb drives sometimes would give trouble with waking up from sleep and require an extra Y cable to get power from both usb ports.

Well Built Case and Works Well.......2007-09-04
Aluminum case is well built and stylish. Like the matching aluminum stand. Western Digital 160 GB Caviar Drive fits inside of case. Power and data cables hook up very well, but a little tight inside of case, which is OK.
At first, I thought that the drive was loose inside of case, but after further reading of instructions discovered that you are supposed to use screws, which come with the unit, to secure the drive to the sides of the case. The screw holes are located beneath the four rubber feet on the sides of the case.
XP recognized drive via USB port right away. Drive was easy to reformat via Computer Management in Control Panel.
Like that the power switch and power indicator light are both located on the front of the drive (unlike the Seagate external drive that I have).
Have not tried the backup (synchornize), imaging or cloning software yet, but it does look interesting.

First of all, the 3 stars has nothing to do with the quality of the product, it is all about the lack of quality of the description and documentation. If the drive that you intend to put in here is SATA, DO NOT buy this! This model is ONLY for the old style PATA interface drives. Nowhere in Amazon's description does it say that. If you have a SATA drive (as opposed to a SATA interface, which is how the case plugs into the computer), you need model DTS. Unfortunately I needed this quickly due to a backup failure, so I returned this and bought another brand at Fry's. There is a handy chart on the back of the box that tells you which model you need, but unfortunately you have to buy the case to see it...

Good product, bad instructions.......2007-06-23
Well, this is a fine product, has a wonderful fan for the HDD. However, the instructions provided do not explain how to put the HDD inside the case, so it took some hard thinking. For anyone else who buys one: open the case, take the 4 small rubber blue plugs off the sides, adjust the jumpers on the HD, plug the HD into the IDE and power cables inside the case. place the HD inside the case label up. replace the side of the case and THEN put in the four screws from the sides and cover the holes up with the rubber blue plugs. don't screw in the screws until you close the case. There you go.
Do It Yourself! Easy, Cost Effective & Better Quality!.......2007-03-11
After a failed attempt with a Western Digital portable, I really did my homework on external hard drives. Putting together my own external hard drive seemed the most appropriate and cost effective way to address my ever growing mp3, video and picture collection. After hours of google searches and product reviews, I decided on this case along with a 320 GB Seagate Barracuda Hard Drive. The install took about 10 minutes and I was good to go. After 4 weeks, it is half full and has worked flawlessly. Being plug and play compatible is a huge bonus too. Do not be afraid to put this together yourself, it is slightly more difficult than changing a light bulb or tire on you car. There are plenty of sites online to get you started. More bang for the buck definitely applies here. As an aside, I needed to contact Apricorn tech support a few times for some simple questions. The call was answered quickly and professionally within minutes. Another huge bonus for anyone who has dealt with the tech support nightmare.

I have many external HD enclosures from 6 different companies-I like this one the best. The fan seems to keep things cool, and the fit and finish are excellent. The software is a wonderful surprise- I use it every day to backup. Recommended.
