Power Problems.......2007-12-31
I bought the 80 GB drive, it was a great price, very cool and a useful product when it works; I have a ton of pictures, music and files in needed to back up. It looks great and performs well when you can get it to power up. The major problem with the drive is that it does not work with all USB ports. I have a laptop with a docking station and the drive won't run off the docking station. I have to undock and then directly connect it to my laptop. I have had similar problems with other computers. This can be annoying when trying to transfer files.
I don't know that I would buy another one...I think I will spend a little more money next time to try and get more reliable performance. Although, I have heard this is a consistent problem with other drives as well. I thought because of the small size I would not have this issue.
Easy to use, Nice portable size.......2007-11-26
I use this portable drive for my business. I have several other larger Seagate hard drives, but this one is a nice portable size I can throw in my briefcase. I have had no problems with it so far ,as others have mentioned. I use it between a laptop computer that is XP operating system and a desktop that is Vista Operating system. I would defienetely recommend.
Caution to desktop users........2007-11-03
I bought this to use as an external backup drive for my desktop computer. It's very plug-and-play, so it needs no setup time--just plug it in and it's ready to go in an instant. Drawbacks are that the USB cable is extremely short--only about 8 inches long, and there's no on/off switch. The short cable might be fine with laptops, but is a problem for my tower. I ordered a longer cable ($9 direct from the manufacturer), but the longest one still is only 21 inches long. The lack of an on/off switch means I have to tie up a front USB port (the rear ones are too inconvenient to reach) if I only want it running occasionally.
Proceed with caution (replace the cable and don't rule out an iPod).......2007-10-28
I'm replacing the 60 GB Western Digital drive, which inexplicably is currently priced higher than this 80 GB model (perhaps because it has the highest consumer ratings of all the WD USB-powered drives). I'm going with the 80 GB model this time, after a bad experience with the 60 GB model.
First of all, I've learned my lesson. If you plan to move this around a lot, get a soft case for it and handle it with care. I dropped mine (from about 5 feet), and it caused the female contact inside the drive to retract and become inaccessible. It's a long story, but the misfortune would not have occurred if Western Digital simply supplied a longer cable with the drive. The one that comes with the 60 GB model is 6" (I'll resist the sexual metaphors) and, since the 80 GB model is exactly the same weight and dimensions, I would expect its cable to be the same length. That's simply an impractical, unworkable length, expecially when you consider how most notebook computers are used. 12", maybe 18", would be optimal. Better too long than too short. So besides the protective padded case, plan on picking up a longer cable.
As for functionality, the drive performed flawlessly, a no-brainer for Mac-users, since no installation discs are required. But if durability is a major concern, if you're prone to "throw" things in your briefcase and toss your briefcase into the car, you may wish to take a look at the comparable Toshiba. A few bucks more and larger in dimensions, but it just "looks" tougher and more shock-resistant.
The Western Digital cable has a USB connector at the computer end and one of those tiny and insecure camera connectors (not sure what they're called) at the other end. I can see the reason for something so small and potentially problematic for a Canon Elph, but why can't it be a more substantial and solid connector for a storage drive? In fact, you may wish to consider (as am I) the largest capacity iPod, which uses a wide, lock-in connector at the drive end and can even exchange information with the computer via a convenient dock.
Bought a seond one!.......2007-09-27
This is a good product. I now own two of them. Easy to set up and use.

Used for a year with no problems.......2007-03-19
I've used this drive for a year with no problems. I have not used the automatic backup feature so I can't comment on that. I have done only manual backups of pictures/videos/documents. The drive seems very sturdy and transfers files fairly rapidly. It just took about 14 minutes to transfer 10 GB of videos.
It doesnt work.......2006-10-14
I have only owned this item as for 6 months and it simply stopped working. This is supposed to be my backup and now it absolutely doesnt work. The company requires I pay to fedex it them to Thailand and will not recover the data for me. By the time I ship it and pay for data recovery, if it can be, I will have spent as much as I did on the drive in the first place. Buy from a better company.
An excellent, handy product.......2006-06-05
I have had this product for the past 3 months, and its performance is nothing below exceptional. I use it to regularly back-up my hard-drive. Though slightly heavy, it is easy portable between locations.
It was Excellent for exactly 13 months !!!.......2006-05-25
This drive worked like a charm for exactly 13 months.
I had no problems with this sturdy and silent drive for 13 months and enjoyed every moment with it.
But then yesterday, just out of the blue - this drive stopped working !!
It just went "BLANK" - this drive is getting powered up, the blue drive light comes on, but my laptop is not recognising it at all. It's like nothing is connected to my USB port.
I have tried several options including trying this out on another laptop, but no luck there also.
I had around 60 GB of data stored in it and now after one year of excellent service this has just died on me without any warning.
This is pathetic.
Now comes the dillema - which other drive should I go for - WD, Maxtor, Iomega, Seagate, Simpletech ??
I am sure all will work fine for some days or months or years, and then suddenly it will leave for its heavenly abode.
I just shudder to think how many people have lost all their data due to this sudden failure. Thats how this industry works, we cannot do anything for this.
I will just suggest that its better to periodically keep burning our important data to DVD so that one fine day we should not be shell shocked as I am today.
As for this drive, I would honestly suggest that stay away from this.
Not worth the box it came in.......2006-04-28
I bought this in order to back up my internal hard-drive and to store copious amounts of music and pictures. I was very happy with the "plug-and-play" ability of the unit, until a week later it would not power up. I tried for days and explored evry option until I realized that it was broken. I realized the futility of trying to deal with WD's customer service, as it was not their problem to recover my priceless data. One day, a miracle happened and it powered up, but the USB cable provided with the unit failed, thus no data transfer was possible until I procured such a cable. Of course, I had to leave the unit plugged in, because who knows if it would power up again? After the data transfer, I then did what I should have done upon receiving the package and the whole unit went in the garbage.
Don't bother....

Perfect for catastrophic data loss.......2005-02-27
This drive worked beutifully in the first 6-8 months, regardless of the infrequent unexplained miscommunication with the PC. After I trusted it for all my work and research data backup, done just once every month, it suddenly gave clicking sounds and stopped working. After extended agony with the customer support, I got no understanding or even the will to help or just listen. Surperisingly, when I talked about this subject with some of my collegues in our University, I discovered that many of them, in defferent departments, suffered from the same problem with different models of the Wistern Digital external hard drives (USB/Firewire).
After all the frustration and the torture with this piece of junk that I trusted with my work, I can say for sure, Buy WD if you are looking for the best machine to lose your data? Beleive me when I say Western Digital Hard Drives are absolutely the worst for your data storage. We've been there.
Computer cannot detect it, WD doesn't care and won't fix it........2005-02-10
I bought this HD, I've regretted it ever since. The power cord connector of the drive is bad, and the computer rarely detects that the drive is connected even when the power connection works. I have to plug it in and unplug it dozens of times before XP knows it is there. WD customer support would only send another power cord, which wasn't the problem at all and didn't change anything. This drive is a waste of money when there are much better choices available.
Best one for storing personal Stuffs.......2003-08-16
I was looking for a good deal since 2-3 months once I start storing my mp3 and video files and pics. I found a gr8 deal @ circuit city for 100$ bugs after rebate. Now I am able to move my datas from my laptop to this external hard drive with a speed performance.
Thanx to Western Digital for this good deal & thanx to Circuit City too..
I recommend you all to buy this one.
Should have bought this bad boy years ago.......2003-06-20
After getting very frustrated with my CD-RW as a storage device (lost data, slow and unreliable), I decided to opt for an external hard drive. I did my homework, and Western Digital seemed like a solid company without the hype and BS. What can I tell you, this thing rocks. My computer runs much more efficiently, as I have moved everything except programs from my main drive to the external. I also backed up my entire main drive in a matter of minutes. No more worrying about the "big" files: music downloads, video, etc. I also appreciated the simplicity of plugging it in and using it within minutes...zero headaches.

Security.......2007-03-26
This product saves your important files in a easy way and in a safe place. It is so easy to use and makes transfering files between computers a breeze.
Using as backup.......2006-02-25
I've been using the Drive for about a month, mostly as a back up, but also to coordinate between home/work computers. Working exactly as I hoped.
Broke after 2 weeks of use.......2005-12-22
I bought the drive from a local retail shop. Two weeks later, the hard drive would not turn on. I checked the power supply's output and I found that there was no output; the power supply was dead. I went back to the retail shop with the power supply and the purchase receipt at hand. They said they wanted everything packaged before they could ship it back to the manufacturer and give me a new one. When I explained that I needed the drive and most importantly, the data inside the drive, they said that there is nothing they can do; I should better forget my work.
Of course I didn't. I went out, bought an equivalent power supply, plugged it to the hard drive and there it was alive again. I paid another $30 but at least I saved my work.
Conclusions:
1) It is unacceptable, the least I can say, to have such kind of infant life mortality on modern products. Don't they burn in their products before they pass the inspection stage?
2) Bureaucracy wins over customer service i.e. WD's policy of having everything back before they can ship a replacement did not work in my case; I just wanted a new power supply so that I could save my data; They wouldn't care less.
A pretty disappointing experience.
Backup not just more storage........2005-12-08
I have used 2 WD 20gb hard drives for 4 years in hard use and they are good still perfect. I am about to order this 80gb external for backup purposes. Read it "backup" That means all of the data I put on my backup hard drive will also be on my regular internal hard drives. Why? Because that is how you use a backup hard drive. The above reviewer was not using the drive for backup purposes. He says he was but he really was just using it for more storage. He lost all of his supposed backedup data because his backup drive failed but what was his drive backing up? Nothing. Nothing at all it was just more storage.
That is why I intend to not just use my new external hard drive for more storage but I will actually use it for backup. So anything on my regular hard drive that I don't want to lose I will also put on my backup drive. Sorry for repeating myself but I guess this theory is just too simple to be followed.
No Worries, Ease of Use.......2005-11-28
I've had my 80GB WD EHDD for several months now. I've had no problems with it, and I use it all the time. You can run programs off of it if you would like. Its quick, quite, sleek and small. Matches my computer, and the EHDD never lets me down.
I work in the computer department at a local Best Buy, and I always reccomend this product to people who are looking for EHDD's. Great buy, will buy again!

Didn't think I would really use it - Now I can't go back!.......2005-06-22
Had been through a few electronics stores where several types of hard drives were being sold and I had thought I wouldn't need any of those. Then I saw the price of several external drives come down low ... my kind of low. I thought I might/could use it for backup of important data and programs. Now I find I am using the USB Drive almost every day, for almost every day things, for saving downloaded programs, scaned pictures ... other stuff ... and of course, backup of data and important files. I now can not see myself without the USB External Hard Drive.
Now the wonder if I will think of buying another drive within the next couple of years.

Terrible reliability.......2004-12-11
My first drive failed after only 2 months causing the loss of all my backup data. The replacement drive just failed again only 6 months later. Since the replacement drive was only given a 90-day warranty (gee...I wonder why?), I am now out a drive and my data. Customer support was horrible and they do not stand behind their products. I will never buy another WD product nor will I recommend them.
Nice product.......2004-03-31
I feel like not enough people write reviews.. so here goes...
Cons: Fairly quite, easy to use just plug and play, reliable... haven't read a bad review of western digital yet, and doesn't run that hot!
Negatives: No on /off switch, I guess the FAT32 could be a negative, but doesn't really concern me cause I don't transfer more than 4 Gig's at a time. No automatic backup software.
All in all this is a great drive, it's reliable and works well, I mean what else do you really want??
great product... but no manual.......2004-01-26
Positives:
- Windows XP plug and play worked as it should.
- Decent speed. I transferred about 10,000 files, 5GB of data in 12 minutes, which comes out to about 7MB/s. The theoretical limit for USB 2.0 is 60MB/s. Taking into consideration the overhead of 10,000 files, I felt the speed was decent.
- Good value for a reliable external drive.
Negatives:
- lacks a user manual! It comes with a quick install poster, which basically just tells you 1. plug in power, 2. connect USB cable, 3. click OK to install. I went to their website thinking I could download a manual, but it doesn't exist!
- as another reviewer mentioned, it's preformatted with FAT32, so you have to reformat it to NTFS yourself. This was harder than expected because there was no user manual. I had to dig in their knowledge base (which, btw, only worked with IE and not Mozilla) to find the info.
Conclusion:
Even though I was astounded that this product had absolutely no manual, I would still recommend this drive because it's a pretty good value. It comes in especially handy for archiving media files because I give my photos and MP3s long file names, so they get truncated on CDROMs. And I have found Western Digital drives to be reliable.
