Fast and very portable.......2007-12-31
Nice and small! Fast and doesn't need a separate plug and connection for power. Does both connection and power from the USB port. This brand is one of the top ones for external hard drives also from what I've read and hear from my techno geek friend. I only wish I had shopped around on price a bit more or waited a little longer, but such is technology. These are so hot these days it seems the price drops more every week.
Simple and Fast.......2007-12-30
I have had this 160 Mb drive for about a month now. I have used it without any hitches on three laptops, a 3 year old HP, a 4 year old Dell, and a current Apple Macbook. It is fast, simple to operate and I would recommend to to anybody looking for a backup drive. One good thing about this drive is that it is powered off the USB port so it has no power cable and bulky adaptor to plug in. The Macbook accesses the drive easily and can read any of the info copied off the PC's onto the drive and visa versa.
My only complaint is that I wish they had other colours instead of black!
Excelent but..........2007-12-29
There are basically 2 reasons why I didn't give this product 5-Stars:
1. The surface is very easily scratched; even as new, the product was already scratched.
2. The product came with a 10cm (4 inches or so) USB cable which is pretty much pathetic. I had to purchase a decent cable afterwards. (Which is like $2 at the most).
Otherwise, this is an excellent HDD for this price and if you don't care about those two points, I highly recommend it.
Good Product at great price!.......2007-12-27
After checking around, I found this to be a good product at a great price.
2 failed WD drives within 6 months........2007-12-23
DO NOT BUY -- I had two WD drives fail within 6 months. I'd give this zero stars if it were an option.
RUN from this company.

Love it.......2007-12-31
I love this external drive. It is small enough to be able to carry everywhere, and it solved my problem of "not having back up for all my files". It is like having 2-3 computers in a device the size of your palm. Also, it is easy and fast to copy files to and from it. I hope it will last forever...currently I only had it for a month or so, so I cannot rate "its longevity."
Bigger than I expected.......2007-12-29
One reviewer wrote that he can slip this into his shirt pocket. I don't know a shirt pocket big enough to fit this item. I bought a western digital instead which is significantly smaller and returned the eGo. The eGo design is nice and works well if you don't need a super small hard drive but go with the WD passport if you need a more portable hard drive.
best for everyday use.......2007-12-29
its my second portable hard drive. i was looking for such a drive for multipurpose uses. Iomega best fit for me. but the only negative is that its not actually 160 GB, its 149 GB, which makes me sad, cuz 11 GB still a lot. but it still best out there.
Good but a little bit expensive.......2007-12-29
This external hd is working as expected. I had to format it using NTFS file system because it comes as FAT32 and some of my files were not able to be copied. Plug & play works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Debian Linux. However, I think is a little bit more expensive that others external hd.
I had to return it!.......2007-12-29
I bought Iomega 160 GB to use it mainly for back-up. Following the instructions coming with the product, I connected it to my laptops (IBM and SONY) as well as my desktop (DELL) but none of those could actually see it. I visited Iomega website to get some extra info but I didn't find any new information that could resolve this issue. However, it was not supposed to be that complicated connecting an external hard drive with your laptop/desktop through USB. Anyway, I couldn't figure out what is going on and I just sent it back to amazon. I bought the Western Digital 250 GB instead, and I am extremely happy. It is even smaller than Iomega and very reliable. I backed up my laptops and my desktop as easily as it should be.

Great external storage.......2007-12-30

Great little drive. Seagate Momentus 5400.3 drive inside.......2007-12-10
I just picked up one of these drives yesterday, and am happy to report it works and powers up with just one USB port on our 13" MacBook (1.83CD) & 17" MacBook Pro (2.16CD). I also tried it with a USB 2.0 cable from a Canon SD600 and it worked fine. I was also very happy to discover that the one-touch button can be configured to launch a specified app other than the Maxtor software, which is awesome if you want to use something else.
Then once I know it everything worked, against my better judgment I opened the case to look inside (using a plastic card, thinner than a credit card, to gently release the latches on each edge- and yes, VOIDING THE WARRANTY), and was happy to discover a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 SATA drive. These are solid, low-power drives- so I promptly swapped it out with the Apple OEM 60GB SATA internal drive. I snapped everything back together and it all still works like a charm.
Great physically small drive for a decent price.......2007-11-29
I bought this drive to create a clone of my iMac hard drive. I chose this model because it has the same capacity as my internal drive (both have 149GB formatted) and is small enough to go in my safe deposit box at the bank. Want to have a clone off site in case of a robbery or fire.
It has worked like a champ. Since I'm using a Mac, the software that came with the drive was of no use to me so I can't say anything about that. But the drive itself ran quietly, cool, and perfectly. Obviously, since I have only had it for a short time, I can't comment on it's reliability.
This drive uses two USB ports in order to get enough power. A twin ended USB cable is supplied. One of the ends is for both data and power, the other is used only for additional power. This way the USB port can supply all the power to run the drive without an external power supply. Cool! But bad news if you forget your cable, probably can't pick one up at your local store.
USB not working.......2007-11-08
Bought this drive 2 days ago, everything worked fine out of the box. Went on a trip and forgot the provided USB 2.0 cable so I went to Office Depot and bought an aptiva USB 2.0 cable. The drive will not work with the generic cable, not sure why. Plugged in my digital camera using the same cable and the camera's storage card shows up fine. I will test the drive with the original cable when I get home, hopefully it still works! Maxtor tech support website is horrible, don't even bother going there for product support.

Excellent Fast and Ultra Portable External Travel Drive.......2007-12-15
First of all I love Seagate and in recent years have only bought Seagate. They're indestructible and I've simply had no problems whatsoever with their drives over the past 10 years.
I've always wondered why they stopped making the predecessor of these mini FreeAgent drives - they were small, black and silver, incredibly durable and just looked really cool on my desk ( I have three). And, you could stack them!! I mean in my opinion, they had really nailed the portable drive case/presentation. It had ultimate protection, cooling, design and it oozed the ipod "cool" factor. Oh well, what do I know, I only bought three.
But, I guess they were working on these new FreeAgent ones. Well, I finally bought one of these and have to admit these are really sweet. Half the size of the black and silver ones that I loved and probably half the weight.
I'm really shocked at how small and light these things are. And, they seem extremely rugged as well.
I haven't checked the stats but they seem at least twice as fast as my older black and silver drives portable external drives. And, thankfully they use the same cable so now I have lots of backup cables.
I highly recommend these - you'll be pleasantly surprised if you haven't seen these live. You can always pop into Staples if you want to check them out in person before you buy.
About the size of a deck of cards.
TIP:
Pick up cheap CD cases when you see them on sale for $2 at Target etc - they make great storage cases for mini hard drives and cables - lots of padding built in with all the pages for CDs - works like a charm.
Good but be aware.......2007-12-07
I purchased this product in August and it's now December and I've had no technical problems with the device. The first "issue" that surprised me is that it takes up two USB slots. This isn't a deal-breaker for me but it was surprising since I've seen several external hard drives with just one. I can chalk that up to not really paying attention during purchase. If you don't have two USB ports next to each other though, your connection will be pretty awkward. The second "issue" was the Ceedo software. I saw what it did in the first couple of minutes and promptly decided it wasn't for me. I wanted to control the file transfers, and organization so I uninstalled it. There haven't been any problems related to the software then or now, just not for me. To be clear, I haven't synced my hard drive to the external, I just use it for storage and manual backups. That process may create problems that are outlined in other reviews.
The size of the drive coupled with the cost made it an easy choice especially given the size. It is light, noiseless, and small. You could easily fit this in a pocket if you needed to but it's very portable nonetheless. I certainly carry it with me while traveling as it holds all of my documents and data for work as well as my movies and music, freeing up tons of space on my hard drive. Accessing data from the drive is reasonably fast.
If it only used one USB port, it would have five stars.
Mac portable users, approach with caution.......2007-12-06
Yup, it happened to me.
My backup Maxtor firewire drive failed during a seemingly innocuous system re-install. 3 days and 2 friends' endless time later, I gave up. An additional week more of scrambling to assemble email attachments, previous CD backups, and file re-creation thankfully left me with most of what was lost.
Thanks to that disaster, I'm now understandably very anal retentive about external backup drives for my Mac portables. Hours of research, purchase/returns at local electronics store...and I now know way too much
about these devices.
The Seagate FreeAgent Go 160GB was one of such devices. It followed attempts at Smartdisk and Western Digital portable USB 2.0, both of which would not mount on any of my portables. Both likewise required a mysterious, and very overpriced external AC adapter for such instances. In sum, the 'intelligent,' dynamic power cycling of the portables didn't pump out enough juice for a lone USB connection sharing data and power over the line.
The FreeAgent Go 160GB seeks to remedy this by requiring two simultaneous USB connections. Unlike its predecessors, Seagate's offering was immediately recognized. Problems is, it became an unwanted houseguest. It never ejected. Even with logouts, restarts, related, the device simply would not disable. A shame, because the thing really is a design masterpiece plus transfers data lightning fast.
To elaborate: Failed ejects mean failed boot and hard drive sectors over time. Simply put, you're messing with power and data literally crossing wires over the same connections. Not recommended for data you can't afford to lose.
In all fairness to Seagate, a similar Hitachi model suffered from the same malady. Three portable USB 2.0 drives and manufacturers later, I've concluded them not a good fit for Mac portable owners.
Problem is, the external hard drive market -- including those powered by AC adapters -- is limited at best. Seagate owns Maxtor. Western Digital and Lacie are notorious for out-of-the-blue hardware failures. Options are limited at best. I ended up (begrudgingly) with a Smartdisk option simply because it wasn't any of the above 4 manufacturers.
For Mac portable owners, 'MacWorld' recommends and reviews various external drives manufactured by smaller companies...but created specifically for Macs. An additional and cost effective option lies in portable drives with enclosures. Still, ensure these enclosures carry intelligent power management to handle laptop environments.
EXCELENT HARDWARE, GOOD SHAPE AND EXCELENT CUSTOMER SUPPORT.......2007-12-03
I BOUGHT THIS ONE, I HAVENT YET TEST TOO MUCH, BUT THE SECOUND DAY I BOUGHT IT I WAS COPYING SOME FILES TO SEAGATE H.D. AND MY COMPUTER CUT OFF SUDENLY, THE NEXT I LOST THE DRIVE, WITH THE SEAGATE SUPPORT I REFOFORMATED THE DRIVE, AND NEXT DOWNLOADED THE SOFTWARE, AND FINALY IT WAS BACK AGAIN... THERE WAS A CRASH ON THE H. D. SOFTWARE, BUT ITSELF IS GREAT.... I STILL WANT TO KNOW HOW TO PARTITION THE DRIVE WITH CEEDO
IT IS JUST GREET>
Perfect for home, work and travel ..........2007-11-27
I spent a couple of hours researching portable hard drives and their brands. After reading an excellent review in one of the PC magazines, I settled on the Seagate brand. This model (FreeAgent Go 160 USB) comes with software called Ceedo, which attempts to give you a desktop on the go - meaning, in theory, you should be able to plug it in to any PC with a USB port and use it as you would at home.
Unfortunately, the "approved" software for Ceedo is extremely limited right now. If you use Internet Explorer, you can take it (and your bookmarks and other settings) anywhere. But other Microsoft Office products are not approved, and neither is any of the other software I use on a daily basis.
In time, this may change, so if you don't need the 8gb of space Ceedo takes, you might keep it for awhile and hope for improvements. Otherwise, I suggest uninstalling it and using the drive for storage (as was my original intention).
On my laptop, which is a year-old Gateway product (1.66 ghz dual processor, 2 gb RAM), the portable drive requires both USB cables to be plugged in, or it doesn't receive sufficient power.
I've stored several games with heavy-duty graphics and processing requirements. These run just fine from the external drive.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with the product. As a result of this experience, I just invested in a Seagate 3.5 USB external drive.

Works great so far.......2007-10-27
I've had this drive now for three months. It works great. I back up my computer every couple of weeks and have had no problems. Its sleek compact shape, reliability, and quick read-write speed make a very desirable package.
USB 2.0 Iomega Portable Hard Drive on OS X.......2007-10-03
Small, easy to use, good price at around 70c per GB of storage. Works fine with OS X, but note that no USB devices -- including this one -- are bootable on non-Intel machines. If you want a bootable drive and you have an older Mac, get a firewire device.
Not shock resistant as advertised.......2007-09-27
The drive's box says it has "DROP SHOCK Technology", but when my 1-year-old swept the (not-turned-on) Iomega drive off our coffee table and it fell two feet to the wood floor, it was permanently damaged and all my data were lost.
The drive may be convenient and large, but do not treat it as a robust storage mechanism!
Good Buy.......2007-09-10
The hard drive is portable and does not need any external power source. It worked for me and hopefully work for others too. I am satisfied with the delivery and the hard drive.
Great product! Would definitely buy again........2007-09-05
- Packaging: cardboard liner was crushed in shipment, but no visible damage to product.
- Size: very small and thin, conveniently fits in a shirt pocket.
- Accessories: comes with double-USB cord, allowing you to connect to 2 USB ports for extra power, and recovery software CD.
- Setup/Install: my Gateway laptop recognized it as soon as I plugged it in. No need for the CD if you just want to use it right away. CD installation of recovery software was simple.
- Function: comes formatted FAT32. First thing I did was re-format to NTFS for more efficient file storage capability and use of compression. No problems there.
- Power: can run off USB power alone, does not need AC power to function although it has a port to connect an AC adapter (sold separately). I did not need to use both USB plugs to make this drive function, which means the drive does not use much power or my laptop's USB ports provide a lot of power.
- Shock protection: Not willing to test this feature out yet. :)
- Summary: I am extremely pleased with this product. Have owned for a month with zero problems. Would purchase again with no hesitation.

Customer Reviews:
A little pricey for its capacity, but a solid hard drive.......2007-03-26
As the review title says, this is a pretty good buy insofar as quality. It was somewhat of a necessity for me because I wanted to dual boot Windows XP and Vista--the free Ubuntu Linux partitioning tool would not work on one of my computers, so I had to consider other options. Rather than purchase a third-party partitioning tool to be used once and never again, I decided to buy a second hard drive, which in the case of the WD1600JSRTL ended up costing only a little more than the partitioning software.
So far, I have had no problems. Installation was about as easy as my HP m7640n Media Center PC allows--it's a tight fit, but that's not Western Digital's fault. Your individual results will vary in this capacity, though the actual act of fitting the SATA and power connectors is not terribly difficult. That having been said, the end of the connector that connects to the drive fits somewhat tightly and requires a little force to be properly inserted. After physical installation, it's simply a matter of powering up the computer, installing the included software, and then configuring the drive in the manner of your choosing.
Configuring the drive as a boot device is a little less than intuitive, though; somehow I ended up screwing up my boot order and making my copy of Windows XP MCE unbootable. But such is life; I guess I'm stuck with Vista now, good or bad. I strongly encourage those reading this review to research the topic of installing an OS on a second hard drive very thoroughly before performing this action. It's probably a simple thing I did to end up in the situation that came about, but I don't want it to happen to anybody else.
It is in fact much easier to configure the drive to serve as information storage. Simply select that option using the included software, and the drive will quickly be recognized and formatted however you wish.
As far as price/performance, though the drive itself offers pretty good performance, it's a little pricey when one considers the cost-per-gigabyte. This comes out to about fifty-six cents per gigabyte, which is not particularly cost effective. However, higher capacity hard drives cost somewhat-to-considerably more than the WD1600JSRTL, even if their cost-per-gigabyte is lower. So if you're in the market for an inexpensive hard drive for light to medium storage and/or need a second drive to dual boot two operating systems, then the WD1600JSRTL is worth a look.
Very nice hard drive.......2007-03-09
These hard drives are very good. They installed very easily and quickly. The data transfers fast and there in not much noise. Overall, it is an excellent product.
Great Hard Drive!.......2007-01-09
It is important to say that these is my first SATA Hard Drive, but I can absolutely recommend it. These hard drive has an excelent perform.

Amazon.com Product Description
Weighing just 4.6 pounds, the ultra-portable Toshiba Satellite U305-S7449 notebook PC packs in an extraordinary amount of power and productivity into its elegant, compact package. The 13.3-inch widescreen display offers TruBrite technology for optimal image clarity and a 1280 x 800 resolution for extra desktop working space and a widescreen aspect ratio for watching letterboxed DVDs. It's powered by Intel's 1.86 GHz Pentium dual-core T2130, which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance and a more efficient power consumption.
A 1.3 megapixel digital web camera built into the LCD's bezel lets you quickly snap photos and participate in live video chats. Other features include a 160 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), 802.11b/g wireless connectivity, Intel GMA X3100 with up to 251 MB of shared video RAM, and 5-in-1 memory card reader. Additionally, this Toshiba notebook is RoHS-compatible, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances.
It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
- Processor: The Intel Pentium dual-core T2130 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 1.86 GHz processor speed, fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
This processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the next version of Microsoft Windows, code-named Vista. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. It's more efficient, thanks to Intel's Power Coordination and Deeper Sleep, which help to transfer power only to those areas of the processor that need it. It also features Intel's Digital Media Boost, which delivers enhanced performance on floating point-intensive applications such as CAD tools, 3-D and 2-D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming.
- Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3-D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 4x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio
This Toshiba Satellite has a 13.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing). It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 251 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This notebook has an integrated Atheros 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (though no PCMCIA card slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connection options:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 ExpressCard 54/34 slot
- Video out: VGA and S-Video
- Stereo headphones/speakers/line-out; microphone/line-in
- 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
