Product Description
The DVP-NC85H five-disc DVD player offers 720p/1080i upscaling through an HDMI connection (High Definition Multi Media Interface). HDMI allows the transfer of uncompressed digital audio and video signals to other HDMI equipped components, providing an uncompromised picture. It also features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, which delivers accurate and vivid images to the television. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include a 12bit/108MHz video DAC (digital to analog converter), and 24 bit/192KHz audio, providing high-quality video and audio processing for vivid images and crystal clear sound.
Amazon.com Product Description
Store hours upon hours of entertainment in Sony's DVP-NC85H/B five-disc carousel changer. This versatile unit plays DVDs and a variety of older disc formats, such as VCD and SVCD, as well as your favorite music CDs. And since the unit supports HDMI connections, you're sure to get the best picture possible.
HDMI Compatible
High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly to a digital television. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector.
An added benefit of connecting the DVP-NC85H/B to your set with HDMI is that the unit can "upscale" commercial DVDs, which are rendered at 480p resolution, to a digitally interpolated 720p resolution, which makes for a much sharper picture.
For analog sets, the DVP-NC85H/B includes a 108 MHz 12-bit digital-to-analog converter for sharp picture and clear action. It features composite, S-video and component video connectors, as well as optical digital, coaxial digital, and RCA analog audio outputs.
Precision Cinema Progressive
While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. This makes the picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because the technology uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle the differing pixel behavior. It also uses separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts.
Precision Drive 3 System
Sony's DVP-NC85H/B delivers excellent picture and sound quality--even from damaged discs. How? The unit's Precision Drive 3 system allows you to playback some DVDs that may have been damaged or warped without a degradation of picture quality. This feature comes in handy when watching rentals or other heavily used discs.
MP3 and JPEG File Playback
The DVP-NC85H/B plays MP3 sound files and JPEG photo files. Simply insert the disc and use the remote control to navigate through your folders to your files.

Sony 5-Disc DVD changer.......2007-12-31
I am very happy with this dvd player. The only thing that I wish it had was a shuffle feature, but I knew that it did not before I purchased it. The picture and sound quality, I think, are excellent.
Fine, with one exception.......2007-12-30
This upgrading DVD player works very well, except the remote control has to be right on axis with the pick-up window on the unit to work.
TOTALLY RECOMMEND .......2007-12-30
I connected this DVD/CD changer to our new Sony Bravia wide screen and surrond sound system. The HD provides a great picture. Far better than the previous DVD player we had connected. The Cd changer works good through the surrond sound system also. Amazon's quick and effecient shipping was good. Very well packaged. I WOULD TOTALLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT through Amazon.
I really love this player!.......2007-12-21
After over 40 hours of play time thus far, I just love this DVD player. Some might think it's slightly slow but I am not that impatient! I think it works extremely well and the only slight drawback is that it does make some mild mechanical noise while loading or waiting to be loaded. This is not a big deal at all and it stops as soon as a disc is loaded. It's totally a minor thing. I can't believe that I was able to get this fabulous 5 DISC SONY DVD Player for $120!! Merry Christmas to Me! ;-) (yeah!)
Great Picture, Great Sound & Easy To Use.......2007-12-12
I bought this unit to replace several CD players and a single disc DVD player. It is all I hoped it would be. I've got it hooked up to an HDTV and a Home Surround Sound System. Picture and sound quality are great. The system was easy to kook up. The manual is fairly straight forward. The multi disc feature makes it easy to load up on music and sit back and enjoy without the need to swap out discs. I'm not into random play, so negative comments in some other reviews had no impact on me. I bought it based on the features I knew I would use and wanted. The price also was quite good. I would highly recommend this unit until an HD version comes along that can match it.

portable cd player.......2007-12-30
Very good sound for the price. Love the bass boost. I also like the looks of it. It is different looking than the normal portable cd player. I'm very happy with it.
sound good, cd player made noise when cd playing.......2007-12-24
The cd player made a very loud whirring noise when it was playing the cd. If the volumn was up loud enough you could not hear it, but at low volumn levels it was a very loud noise.
We called the company who said it was not suppose to do that, so we returned to Amazon for refund as it was out of stock and they could not ship another.

A disappointing experience.......2007-12-27
I thought that my order will come in good function, but it is a malfunctioned machine with only radio working. I intent to purchase this stuff as a gift to a close friend for Christmas to enrich her life through CD music, but it simply doesn't move at all. I am so frustrated with this embarrassment and all the procedure to handle this bad merchandise.
I probably won't visit Amazon for a long time.
Does the Job.......2007-12-24
After I ordered this item, I read a few reviews here that said the product was a cheap piece of junk that refused to work right. I was concerned but when the player came, it turned out that it works just fine and I have not had a single problem with it. It's smaller than I expected but it is meant to be portable.
Don't buy this--it's garbage.......2007-12-17
Buying this was a waste of money. It won't play any tapes or CD's that have been copied or burned even though it is advertised to do so. It hangs up when you play tapes (has eaten two new tapes already) and also hangs up when playing cd's. I haven't tried the radio but I am definitely throwing this junk in the garbage. It is not worth the time and effort (and postage) to return it.
Very Good.......2007-12-16
Very well pleased with this portable CD player.
For such a small item it sure puts forth the volumn.
Emerson PD5203 Portable is a good value.......2007-12-12
A nice little compact unit with radio, cassette and CD playback capabilities. Not a lot of power, but decent enough sound.

Good value.......2007-12-31
The package has a lot of features in an attractive design. Radio reception is good, and sound quality is adequate for a clock radio.
Contacting Philips about this model........2007-12-20
I purchased two of the AJ130 alarm clock/CD/radios on December 4, 2007,
from another online retailer, and was excited to do so, as my wife and I are owners of other Philips clock radios with the "Gentle Wake" feature (She has the AJ3965 and I have the AJ3980). My intent was to buy two matching, smaller, sleek models with similar functions to the ones we were replacing. Both of us really like the "Gentle Wake" feature of the Philips line. I set both of the clocks up, and, to my dismay, the Gentle Wake feature, which is advertised as included on this model, does not function. I figured that, perhaps, one was defective and that I might have to return it, but then when the feature didn't work on EITHER of them, I thought better and wrote to Philips, asking them whether or not he Gentle Wake feature, said to be one of this model's features, actually exists in this model. A phone call solved nothing -- upon my suggestion that they consider bench/lab testing this model for that function, the tech support guy told me that they weren't able to do that. How about that?!?! The MANUFACTURER of the darn clock can't even test it. Makes you wonder.
Really, my only complaint about the unit is the fact that BOTH new units lack the touted "Gentle Wake" feature. It is not a misprint or an error on the website -- it is advertised on the unit's packaging. I'm also very familiar with how the feature works. On the other two models I mentioned, the Gentle Wake gradually increases the volume of whatever the wake-up setting is (radio/CD/buzzer) until it reaches a maximum level. In fact, on the AJ3965, you can even set what the maximum level you want it to reach IS. On the AJ130, the Gentle Wake is only applicable to the BUZZER setting, so CD and Radio do not gradually get louder -- they stay at whatever level you have the volume set at before you go to sleep. When the alarm goes off, though, if you have it set on "Buzzer," the volume goes straight for the jugular -- there ain't NOTHIN' "Gentle" about that "Wake."
It's a sad situation, because Philips makes good products, but I think they really goofed with this one. It might turn out that they just happened to manufacture a "bad batch" of them, but I have a feeling that this is more than just a bad batch. I question whether or not the Gentle Wake feature REALLY IS supposed to be promoted as included on this model.
I've written to Philips Consumer Electronics about this problem. I'm somewhat leery of sending them my clocks for an exchange, as I'm afraid that the two that I receive in return will lack the same functionality, and what's more -- I'll be out whatever it cost me to ship them.
I don't know. Buy at your own risk. I only say that I would NOT recommend it to a friend because of the fact that the feature is absent when it is supposed to be present. If they fix that issue, then I would recommend it.
alarming alarm clock.......2007-12-14
easy to read. dual alram is nice. Alarm can wake the dead and has no volume control. No am radio tuner. cannot adjust time or alarm if radio is on. Alarm does not sound is radio is on. Still searching for the "right clock radio.

How techno-sauvy are you?.......2007-12-12
It takes a fair amount of searching to find a good clock radio. I suspect they are going the way of the dial phone and analogue TV. I wanted one that also had CD capacity. This one was to replace our 10 year old set. Our first try didn't work. It didn't wake us up and would only pick up about 1/2 of the available stations.
I decided to try this little guy after reading the reviews on-line. It is surprisingly small, about the size of a travel alarm. However, it has great sound. It's display is nice and clear. I can read it from across the room w/o my glasses on, but it only has two settings, good and bright enough to read by.
The biggest problem for me was trying to figure it out. It has a number of little buttons placed with no apparent logic and several buttons that are multi-purposed.
The instruction sheet is huge and must of been laid out by a chimp. It makes no sense at all. The illustration have nothing to do with the written portions. The written portions seem always to leave some vital step out as if one should know what to do intuitively.
I resorted to just pushing buttons until something happened. Now that it's set I pray for no power outages.
Despite my above trial by clock radio I love this little guy. I recommend it to you, especially those of you who don't like your lives too easy.
Philips AJ130 AJ130B CD clock radio - Mixed Review... not exactly the cream of the crop........2007-12-07
So one... Amazon doesn't title this product correctly. It comes in white or black, if the model number has the "B" on the end it's in black.
Anyways, I bought this a few days ago from a competing eTailer, as they had the black one in stock for a decent price with free shipping. It was to replace my old Timex which seemed to be crapping out. Here's my thoughts:
Pros: Environmental packaging (no foam) uses molded cardboard, I always like seeing companies doing this. Fairly small size and decent design. You can wake to a CD and pick between 20 tracks. Fairly easy to use. Advertises some good features: Dimming LCD, gentle wake volume, battery backup (2 AAA's), programmable CD tracks to wake to... The unit does not make any popping noises through the speaker just before the alarm goes off. My old Timex electronically clicked to turn on the speaker just before the fake onboard nature sounds would start, and it was enough to startle you awake before nature released her gentle furry! The Philips CD doesn't make any noise in "snooze mode" or before the CD starts playing, I've heard other units make noise while the CD spins in idle during your snooze. This CD player is the quietest running I've ever heard. It's virtually silent during operation.
I found using and programing the Philips to be be easy, but then again technology makes sense to me. I did find that the buttons you press on the side of the unit to change the time were odd. You sometimes had to press them a little hard or a couple of times before they'd engage.
Cons: I bought this so we could wake up to nature CD's since most alarm clocks with nature sounds on them are pretty cheesy. Plus they don't have gentle wake modes! The Philips does come with "gentle wake" which is supposed to ease the volume in slowly (about 15 seconds for this model). Well, as with many gentle wake clocks the initial volume when it starts is quite loud. Not gentle in my opinion. I think gentle wake should start at zero volume and rise over at least one minute if not more. But since we're waking to a CD it doesn't really make a difference. I burn my own nature CD's and set the volume on the CD to fade in over 5 minutes.
The LCD display is a white blue color, not green, with black numbers and letters. It's large and easy to read. The LCD display has 2 settings. Super bright and bright! At night the dimmed mode lights up the entire room! That's rough because we're quite sensitive to light when we're sleeping at night. I put a colored gel over the screen and now the illumination is perfect and I can change the colors depending on what color of gel I use, but the jury is out one whether or not I'm still going to ship this item back. 2 alarms is good and works for us. My old Timex had 4 alarms which could be set to independent nature sounds, but I never used all 4, usually 2 and the nature sounds were junk, and lets not forget that darn speaker clicking on and waking us up startlingly before our time!
The really really really odd thing about this Philips is that there's only digital FM tuning. No AM stations! It doesn't matter much to me, since I don't use the radio on it, but I find it really odd that there's no AM radio tuning?! It would be a nice option incase we need to tune into any emergency info or news stuff. The sound on this unit is okay. A little thin with the bass, but hard to get good sound from such a tiny speaker. It still sounds better than my old Timex, but the Sony Dreamstation's are much fuller for dynamic sound. I think the Philips only has one speaker as well, so your sound is in mono. If power goes out this alarm clock will not function at all (even with the battery backup), but you won't have to reset it once the power comes back on thanks to the battery backup, but if the powers off and you need to wake up you might miss your appointment! Not to boast about my old Timex junker, but the alarms still worked on that unit even when unplugged! Was not good when it was in storage as I could hear it going off. This unit does make a good electrical click sound when you turn off the sound or put it into snooze. There's also no date display on this, so if you wake up and don't know what year you're in, you're out of luck.
So... all in all, the Philips CD alarm clock works for us. We just want to be able to wake to a CD, but if we wanted to do anything else we'd definitely take it back. I still might, but in this price range the choices aren't really that great, but I would like fuller sound.
UPDATE: December 22, 2007
I ended up shipping back this alarm clock. I found a good selection of alarm clocks in our neighborhood, and I always like buying local, not to mention it's easier to try things, or return them if they don't work out as planned. Anyways, it's a bummer, as I like Philips products, but I ended up with an RCA RP5620 for $15 bones less than what I paid for the Philips. The RCA is not perfect either, but it does feel like a step up from the Philips and I don't have to cover the screen in dimmed mode! The RCA also sounds better, maybe because it has 2 speakers. I think the deciding factor was that the alarm (the buzzer) will still sound if the power goes out. I'd hate to miss a meeting or something important because my alarm clock didn't go off!

so far, so good.......2007-12-20
I have had this product for less than a month, so I cannot review how it will hold up in the long run. But so far, I LOVE it. It's small enough to fit on a shelf or mantel, so it does not take up a lot of space. It's much more affordable than a full component stereo, but it sounds just as good as expensive component stereos I have owned in the past(and cannot afford right now). It worked perfectly fine as soon as we took it out of the box. We have been playing it pretty much non-stop since we got it. It is usually only off if we are gone or asleep. And with regards to sleeping, I noticed another reviewer complained of the colored lights keeping them awake. It is true that you cannot turn off the colored lights when the stereo is on, but they do go off when you power the stereo off. I'm not sure if that reviewer was trying to use the sleep function for it to play a period of time while they fell asleep, but there is certainly no need to put a blanket over it or cardboard in front of it as long as you power it off. The colors change while it is on, or you can freeze the color-changing feature at a single color, but you cannot turn them off while it is on. You cannot change one cd while another is playing. The stereo will play all 3 cds consecutively, or you can program it to play a certain sequence. We are very happy with this stereo so far, especially for the price.
Not Worth the Money.......2007-12-17
When we took this item out of the box Christmas of '06, it did not work. We received a replacement and that worked for about 11 months. Christmas of '07 and the unit has multiple issues that need to be repaired. The warranty is only 90 days and getting in touch with Emerson to find a repair center is nearly impossible. Every time I call the 800 number I am put on hold for many, many minutes. So many that I eventually have to hang up and get on with my life. This is enough to keep ME from buying another Emerson product!
Does not live up to expectations.......2007-11-13
While the sound from this unit is quite good, it is a frustrating unit to deal with. The colors do change . . . but, contrary to what the owners manual states, you can not turn the color changing feature off while the unit is playing. Nor can you turn the colors off when the unit is not playing. So if, like me, you put this unit in your bedroom you now have a very bright nightlight to keep you company. The company did replace the unit when I complained, but the replacement works exactly the same. In order to sleep I either have to cover the unit or place a piece of cardboard in front of it to shut off the light. Would I buy again? No way.
Great CD Player.......2007-10-06
The CD player is easy to set up and has really good sound quality for the price. The radio picks up stations very well and is really easy to mount on the wall. All of the directions in the user's manual are simple and clear so the set-up process is quick and painless.
Highly recommend this CD player!
I'm ectstatic.......2007-07-21
I am so thrilled with this audio system I can't describe it. It's beautiful, compact and the quality of sound beats units that I've had that were three times the size of this one. I haven't watched tv since I got it. I'm going to buy three more by Christmas for three of my grand-children. One of them said "wow, it's just like a real disc jockey set-up. Also I'm not very good at putting things together but it was a snap and after a couple of hours, I could operate everything.Sorry to run on but I just couldn't help it.

I've bought the gold ones and they were great. But this time they were blue and the first one didn't write. only 40 x speed on these blue ones also. So ask the seller which color they have, ask for the gold ones.
maxell lost its quality.......2006-02-12
maxell has been one of my trusted use for blank discs for longer than i can remember.
up until sometime in 2005...when maxell changed their discs.
heres the difference
the 2004 model has the maxell guy on rhe left, and the cdr/80/700 tihng on the right. on the top it says maxell in big letters. also if you feel the background, it is a whole lot more stable. it doesnt chip easily. also the plastic used was not scratched easily.
the 2005/2006 model is a whole lot worse. it says cd-r onl eft, highlighted. on top of that it has maxell in small letters. on the right it says 80/700 and the maxell guy is right below it. the top of the disc is obviously used with cheaper material, and it scratches easily.
another thing noticeable from the two is burn errors. ive had no burn errors at all with either of the 2004 models (regular or music). on the 2005 model at least 80% failed.
also when using nero express i tested imation and sony cd-rs just to make sure my recorder was ok. imation had a 10% fail rate and sony had a 0% fail rate...my recorder works fine.
also, i tried burning at slower speed with no better results.
why would imation and sony work on my computer and maxell wouldnt. because maxell cd-rs are garbage. avoid at all costs get imation sony or get maxell but only if the discs look like i explained on the 2004 modle becuase those were literally the best cdrs ive ever owned.

They are of the highest quality and reliability, you can't go wrong with these discs. I haven't coastered one disc in ~ 500 burns.

worked for me except the intel graphics card.......2007-02-09
I have never installed a disk drive before. I bought this to replace my worn out CDRW drive. Buzzed right through the install (once I figured out exactly what I was doing). It's been 3 weeks since I installed it. Seems to be working fine. Very pleased.
**** The Intel graphics card on this hard drive is not updated. I have downloaded the update several times but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Causes occational screen freezing that can be really annoying.

this was the worst product I've ever bought!!! And I own a Dell!!!.......2006-04-15
I was really excited the day I got this burner, but I wasn't expected so many problems for so many hours. It's probably a compatibility issue with Windows XP, but why is this the case if it's a new product? The company has no helpful troubleshooting documents or services, the software they give you is unnecessary, and I'm just getting madder and madder just thinking about how long it took to figure out it wasn't going to work! Don't buy it if you have Windows XP.
Very fast, awesome burner.......2005-12-29
I just got this burner tonight and tried it out for the first time. I burned 10 songs in a minute and a half. So far this burner is great.

Nice burns and read speeds.......2007-05-08
Read speeds are excellent. DVDs and CDs are read at fast speeds, not locked at slow speeds like some burners I have tried. I only tried burning at 8x as I don't trust 16x in general. The resulting burns on TDK printable media is excellent; no incompatiblity problems in any machines I play them in.
My only complaint is the enclosure seems a bit flimsy, but that's negligible.
