Have used PNY, Lexar and Iomega flash drives. Bought this Kingston based on reviews here of the Kingston Data Traveler and the Data Traveler II.
I like this drive; does everything it's supposed to, doesn't come with annoying software, and has a snug-fitting cap. You'd appreciate the last feature, especially if you bought a 1GB PNY. Its cap is particularly loose fitting.
Used to be, with XP SP1, these flash drives needed to be formatted with NTFS file system and also (in Device Manager) needed its Policies set to "Optimize for Performance", or they would run badly.
Quite to my surprise this doesn't really seem to matter with XP SP2, which I now use. I formatted it NTFS anyway but leave its Policies set to Optimize for Quick Removal (the default) and don't seem to be paying a penalty.
Would recommend this DT II over the plain Kingston Data Traveler. It's worth the extra $4 or so for its speed.
Will be buying additional Kingston IIs as the need arises.

I purchased this USB drive due to the low cost and due to the Kingston name. I used the drive to transfer data between computers and did so about once a day. The drive worked well at first, but after only two months of use, the USB drive stopped working. Fortunately, I had not deleted the data after I transferred it to a drive so nothing was lost, but losing data was certainly a risk.
I would hesitate to purchase another Kingston drive because my experience is that they are unreliable. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. I plan to spend more money on another brand in the future because it is worth the extra expense to ensure that my data is safe.

I am real happy I bought this. It works great just like promised. I have been carrying this around on my key ring for a long time now and it is working great. The cap is nice and tight, so I don't have to worry about it getting lost. I'm real rough with my keys sometimes, but the Kingston doesn't give me any troubles. Very reliable, nice looking, sturdy, great price, ... etc.

The selling point of this product is that it's small and it can be carried in a key chain. If one will do so, the loop will brake (mine did broke in a month and I lost it). I consider this product as a failure! Next time try to change that loop, other then it will, can, be the finest product of its kind.

Both at home and in my work, I have the need to copy and move files -some of them with sizes up to a GB. For these occasions, I have purchased a slew of 'key', 'thumb' and 'flash' drives of various brands, capacities, speeds and sizes and have reviewed a couple of them here on epinions. Some performed better than others - all worked OK - but.... they all felt like added heft on my keyring. So much so, in some instances, that I wound up storing them in desk drawers - and then not having them with me at times when I needed them. What I had REALLY been hoping to find all along, was a device small enough to fit, lightly and unobtrusively, on my key ring with a full GB of storage capacity. I believe that I have finally found such a device and would like to be the first to introduce you to the OCZ Roadster. This review will be as brief and as to-the-point as is the device itself. No space wasted anywhere!
It measures an incredibly (compared to most others) small 1 1/8" X 5/8" X 3/16" closed - and opens with plug available to a full length of just under 2". It is smaller, in fact, than any of the keys on my keyring! But is quick and easy to use. The unit comes with a USB 2.0 connecting cable if your plug receptacle is positioned so as to make it necessary. Mine is not, as my ports at the office are right on the front of the CPU and at home they are also easy to reach. The cable is a handy addition if you need it, though. It is, of course, completely Plug and Play, transfers data and photos very quickly and adds literally no noticeable weight or 'heft' to your key ring!
It seems to me to have achieved a better and more honestly functional version of what we really mean by 'portability' and makes the perfect thumb drive if anything up to 2GB (the larger size of the same device) will meet your data storage and transfer needs. It would be MUCH improved if the ring fitting on it were metal instead of plastic... I can see it won't last as long as the drive itself.
As with all OCZ devices, it comes with a full 3-year warranty.

The cheap plastic key-ring loop broke the second day (this appears to happen to everyone who puts the silly thing in their pocket). But the device works, and I now carry it in my belt-pouch so I always have it ready.

I keep my USB stick in my pocket, attached to my keychain. Therefore, only the smallest models come into consideration. I thought I had found the perfect one with the OCZ Roadster. Unfortunately, the small plastic ring broke after less than one week of use. That's a real pity, because otherwise the device is nice. Just because of this small, badly designed detail, the whole thing is now useless.

This is the smallest usb drive I've seen to date. Wonderfully small. It has a pretty fast transfer speed, and works well. The only flaw is the plastic they chose to make it with. OCZ used a very hard and brittle plastic that quickly started showing little chips and scratches. After a week of toting it around, the little plastic nub for hooking to your key chain, etc. broke. I feared this would happen given the brittle plastic. So now I have no easy way to tote it around... and it is so small, you could easily lose it. If OCZ remade this without any plastic, and used some brushed metal instead... this would be the perfect usb drive for taking everywhere... as it is, I can only give it 3 stars. :-(

You don't have to buy this to get free and seamless encryption for jump drives if you are using XP, Vista or even Windows 2000.
There IS NO SOFTWARE INSTALLATION when you insert the drive, instead the DTSP_Launcher.exe applet will autorun (if enabled) and walk you through the password setup process, and create a custom hint.
If you fail to enter the password 10 consecutive times, the disk will destroy the protected data with a thorough wipe, we couldn't restore the data with Sysinternals Disk Commander or SmartUnDelete.
Data transfer from the encrypted partition is slower than other jump drives we use, it seems comparable to the latency we encounter when using NTFS EFS formatted disks.
The disadvantage to NTFS EFS is you have to import the decryption certificate / key onto any system you wish to read the encrypted data, unless the key is deleted when done then any data encrypted and stored anywhere can be read by the importing computer.
Titanium casing is plastic hybrid and has some noticeable but not necessarily arduous weight, if you are used to carrying it inside your pocket you'll notice if it falls out.
--------- Management ---------
Inside Win32 DiskManager the drive appears as multiple partitions, the first is a virtual CD-ROM about 6MB in size, this contains the DTSP_Launcher.exe, the encrypted partition will appear as a Removable Disk.
The DTSP_Launcher.exe applet remains resident in the application bar tray and can be dynamically unloaded.
Overall, we recommend it because it is straightforward to use, doesn't install software onto your computer and thoroughly destroys the data when necessary.

I bought one of these for work. I was able to transfer a 581 Megabyte SQL database to the drive in a little under 3 minutes. Probably more likely just above 2 minutes. Very fast.
Then there's the security peace of mind. No software to install on any PC you use it on. I love it. The titanium case and waterproofing are icing on the cake. Price has gone up a good chunk, I guess these are getting popular. I don't know if I will bother with conventional pen drives anymore. If you have to keep tax records, visa numbers etc at home and are worried about identity theft..with a proper password and setup, here is your solution. [...]

I looked for a USB drive for some time before deciding on the Kingston Secure. I currently own a Sandisk Cruzer Mini and a Micro. Both of the Sandisk drives are extremely slow regardless of the USB technology on the host computer (USB 1.1 or 2.0). This Kingston is extremely fast, the encryption is seemless with no evidence of impacting speed. The sync software isn't very impressive, I prefer using an Open-source program called Unison.
The only down-side of the drive is the price and the size. It's a relatively large drive and when using USB outlets that are side-by-side, it is a tight squeeze using the second slot, even when using a cable for a peripheral device. As for the price, I expect as time passes, the price may come down.
I would like to see more manufacturers use the same technology for their USB drives.

I love my flash drive. i have the 4gb version and use the migo and secure traveller a lot. i am currently a senior developer at a software engineering company and i am constantly using it to deploy solutions i have authoured onto our servers. its nice and small (actually all flash drives are) so its easily gets lost and i am the type of person that will rather have no flash drive than one with a missing lid. So kingston please put a chain on the lid that attaches to the main part. also it would be nice if it was waterproof like my last one (Cayon 1gb - i lost the lid).

This is my very first USB flash drive. I've used others before, but never owned my own. I decided to go for the 1GB version, so I'd have plenty of room to put whatever I wanted onto it.
Right out of the box, my impression was that it was smaller than I expected, which is good. For some reason, to me, the photos on the web make it look a bit clunky. The cap is very sturdy, and definitely doesn't come off easily, so there's no need to worry about losing it. Plugging the drive into my XP machine, the proper drivers are installed immediately, and it's ready to go. A cool-looking blue LED light flickers when the drive is being accessed, and remains off when idle.
The drive comes with software already on it: Migo, and SecureTraveler. Migo is basically software that allows you to synchronize files (Internet Explorer favorites, Outlook files, and other files that you can specify) between two computers, and possibly more than two, though I'm not entirely sure. I actually won't be using the Migo software as I have no need for it, but it's a nice option to have.
SecureTraveler lets you, in a sense, partition your drive into two segments: public, and private. When you insert your USB drive into a computer, you're looking at the public partition. To access the private partition, you simply double click the SecureTraveler icon, and you're prompted for a password. Once you enter the correct password, you have access to the private partition. It's really quite amazing, and I didn't expect this to work on a brand new machine that I've never plugged the drive into, but sure enough, I inserted the drive and the private contents were not shown at all. Impressive.

Oh, and to the user who gave a bad review because it doesn't support Mac: there's plenty of info on this product on the web. A little research reveals that it's for Win2000/XP only (drivers needed for Win98). Don't knock the product if you don't put the research time in.
Hint: If you go to www.kingston.com/support/downloads, you can download updated versions of the Migo and SecureTraveler software and copy them to your USB flash drive. Be sure to copy the necessary software onto BOTH the public and private partitions.

When I bought it from internet, it didn't fully describe the compatibility ... until you opened the package reading the Quick Start Guide!

The Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Mini Flash Drive is pretty slow. It takes forever to write something to memory. It is also slow when you play things from it. Transfers often time one because it takes so long to write the files into the flash drive's memory. You get what you pay for. It is cheap, not that reliable, not good in a hurry, but ok if you just want to store non-vital things there. I use it to unload my TiVo TCD649080 Series2 80-Hour Dual-Tuner Digital Video Recorder whenever it gets too full. It holds 2 movies and a couple of shows at the lowest quality setting. It is an ok value, just don't put anythign of vital importance in it.
