This was the worst purchase I've ever made on Amazon, and I've made quite a few.
I had accidentally damaged the front-plate of the DVD-player during installation, and called TigerDirect to discuss. I told them that the issue may have been due to my installation issues, but wanted to know what their policy was in that case.
They agreed to take the item back. However, they were very rude during this process. At one point, one of the engineers said they couldn't hear me and that my connection must be bad. I think he was joking around because the second I offered to give-up on returning the item, he could suddenly hear me again.

I purchased this dual-layer DVD burner (Plextor PX-716UF) app. one year ago based upon MacWorld's recommendation. I haven't been disappointed! While it isn't the cheapest external DVD burner available, it has performed flawlessly for me (burning 1-2 DVDs per day). Along with Toast Titanium and Roxio Popcorn (on a Mac), it's the perfect external solution if you don't have an internal burner. This drive has a FireWire 400 port, a USB 2.0 port, and supports the following formats/speeds: DVD-R, 16X; DVD+R, 16X; DVD+R dual-layer, 4X; and CD-R, 48x.

Using it with iDVD is tricky.......2005-09-22
I recently bought one of the LaCie DVD burners with Lightscribe, in order to burn DVDs that I had created using iDVD on my Macintosh. However, every time I tried burning a disc I would get an error message. I spoke to LaCie's customer service who said "We don't support iDVD, only Toast. Call Apple." I was not very pleased with this response. Since LaCie markets heavily to Mac users, and iDVD is the main program for creating DVDs on the Mac, I was surprised at this lack of support. I called Apple, who basically said that it sounded like a problem with the DVD burner. Since I had tried this on two different computers, I agreed. I was ready to return the unit when I did some further Internet searching. Turns out that there is a simple solution for using iDVD: in iDVD, after you're done assembling the DVD, go to "Save as disc image" (under File menu). This creates a disk image on your desktop (can take a few hours). When it's done, open the disk image, make sure it works (using DVD player), then use Toast to copy the disk image to a DVD. Works well.
I'm surprised that the Tech support at LaCie didn't know enough about their burners to tell me this!
works ok in general .......2005-09-10
did not do as well as plextor. the plextor i have, which has firewire and usb not just firewire (though you can get the plextor with both), burned a dvd on an old computer while this one couldnt, tho i had to use 16x media to do it on the plextor. it may just be the roxio 7 program i have. i dont know. both worked about the same on a g4 apple.

Slow DVD-R speed limits this burner........2005-05-01
The new technology to allow for the Lightscribe feature actually slows down this DVD burner! DVD-R speeds are limited to 8X. So, if speed is an issue, look to another burner without Lightscribe to get DVD-R at 16X. If Lightscribe is more important, then go with this one. But beware of what you're getting. I was disappointed to discover I had a crippled DVD burner for the sake of Lightscribe! I'm returning it.

Cleverly Omitted Information.......2007-05-18
As a Mac user, I was excited to see this product so highly recommended for DVD burning on the Apple platform. Carefully researched this product and what the package included and decided to purchase, despite the high price tag. What is cleverly ommitted EVERYWHERE this product is listed (except in fine print on the package itself, which I didn't get to see until it arrived) is that the drivers included are only for a Windows OS. The Mac drivers are an additional $80+ through another comapny. COMPLETE rip off, and NOT clearly stated anywhere. SERIOUS reservations about this company and their products.
Great Burner.......2007-05-11
This burner has worked well for me. I have only used in on USB, and not Firewire, so I cannot comment on its Firewire capability.
I have burned DVD's and CD's, and no coasters yet. Write speed seems a little slower than advertized, but it is offset by the quality DVD/CD that it burns.
I have yet to have any problems with the drive.
It is a little larger and heavier than I anticipated, and this makes it difficult to be portable with my laptop; so, I use my older, thinner Plextor drive with my laptop, and leave this one attached to my desktop PC
Won't work on Firewire Connection........2007-03-08
I was trying to use the burner with my Dell Inspiron 8200 on Firewire 400 connection, but it would freeze after a few seconds. My notebook specifications are: P4M 2.0GHz, 1 GB ram, 80GB 7200RPM HDD, and the Firewire host chipset is a TI. However, it was running fine on USB 2.0 connection (through a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card, of course) burning CD-R and DVD+R, despite the burn being quite slow.
In the nutshell, I believe that this burner should be a good one but, maybe, it's just not for me. Hopefully, I hope that Plextor would acknowledge of this possible issue and then later release a firmware to address the problem.
Plextor PX-755UF Shines.......2007-01-11
I reserved the 5th star rating for this unit as I haven't authored or copied very many DVDs with it yet. However, what I have accomplished with it is commendable. I can copy an entire commercial DVD (Movie + all the extras) under 50 minutes. I have composed a Slide show DVD with my own MP3 background music selections and am quite pleased with it.
So far, no coasters. I am now in the process of producing DVDs of my old 8mm home movies. The converter is giving me more problems than anything. Still recommend the PX-755UF for anyone interested in an external burner. Installation was a snap (plug-n-play).
