I am just stunned at the staggeringly, unbelievably miserable write performance of this device, especially with the stellar reputation the first-gen OCZ Rally had.
I just transferred 1GB of *large* video files (HD game trailers) to the stick. Total time: 24 minutes. 24 minutes for 1GB of large files. That works out to a beyond pathetic 700KB/second! What on earth is wrong with this POS?
Transferring small files is even worse... I have spent an entire afternoon filling this stick with a few thousand files. Don't EVER copy a lot of small files to this, zip them up or something first to a single file.
Delete performance is just as bad. I have seen it take an entire minute to delete a couple of large files. When I had to delete thousands of files, I literally gave up because it was taking forever (looked like it was going to take hours), and formatted the thing.
It's like this thing's FAT (File Allocation Table) is horribly slow, and any changes to it take an unreasonably long time.
Oh, as if the above wasn't bad enough, several times I have copied a huge file to this, and then found out later the file wasn't copied properly. I was able to scan one of the non-working files using BitTorrent's hash checking (against a torrent of the same file), and guess what? The first 1% of the (2.4 GB) file was corrupted or missing, which means ~24MB didn't get copied properly. Brilliant.
The *only* bright point with this stick is it truly does have amazing read speeds... approaching 30MB/sec. But the ridiculously poor write performance makes this thing basically unusable for me in real-world use. Perhaps if you write to this extremely infrequently and read all the time from it, it would be adequate.
I have ordered an 8GB Corsair Voyager GT, and plan on destroying the Rally2 when it arrives. It's that bad.

I bought this one because I wanted a new memory stick with more capacity than my current one, and from the advertised read/write speeds I expected that it would be faster as well. When I wanted to copy a folder full of files to the stick - a job of 10 min usually - this would have taken over one hour. According to the manufacturer's forum, this is not a defect. Other people experienced the same. Figures from my measurements: Write speed for a single large file: 6 MB/sec. Read speed for a single large file: 20 MB/sec. Interesting is my normal use case, for example 400 files of average size 10 kB. My several years old 128 MB stick achieves a write speed of 50 KB/sec for this. The OCZ only 6.5 kB/sec! This makes it 7x slower than my old stick!

This Sandisk item is great! The U3 feature makes traveling and working on different computers a breeze. The included software helps me use and manage my data. Other software can easily be added from various websites. I now want the 16gb version because carrying additional data to use with my U3 software makes it easier to get my work done!

I've had this thing for a little over two weeks and I love it. I finally have enough space to hold all my critical backups and then some. I can't speak to its durability since I've only had it for a short while, but I accidentally washed my 4gb Cruzer along with a load of laundry and not only did it still work perfectly afterward, THERE WAS NO LOSS OF DATA WHATSOEVER! These things are tough! Can't wait for the 16gb Cruzer so I can devote a full 4gb to Vista's ReadyBoost and still have 12gb left over for general data storage.

I figured I'd chime in because I've had mine since Xmas and use it at work almost daily. No issues at all. works great. I suppose I might mention that the keyring is not advisable since it looks kinda week but I keep mine in my pocket.

I bought this because of two reasons. Huge capacity (8gb) and Capless design (Never have to worry about loosing a cap). I really enjoyed using it and really really liked it. But sadly and luckily, it stopped working exactly after 30 days (I bought it from Bestbuy, which had 30-day return policy. SO I at least got my money back although what's stored inside was priceless....!!!) I ALWAYS use safe removal feature of the Windows. I saved all my critically important data and documents, but the device just wouldn't be recognized. Not even a "Device not recognized" ballon on the lower right hand corner when plugged in. It just refuses to be recognized as if nothing is inserted into the usb port!!. Tried every possible way to retrieve the data, but ended up loosing all my experiment data. Should have done back-up regularly. Hope others had a better luck with this device.

It's a SanDisk, it's good. Like all U3 drives I removed it. I want storage not application space.
Unlike earlier and smaller Cruzers this one feels lightweight and cheap. Also, I didn't want one with moving parts such as this, but I wanted the capacity and for it to be a SanDisk.
Doesn't come with a lanyard as earlier versions did. The plastic assembly is kind of cheap and hokey, especially where the key chain ring attaches.
The only functional gripe that I have is that because of its footprint (due to the moving parts) two flash drives can't be plugged into adjacent USB ports in most cases.
-SanDisk, part of the idea behind solid state devices is to make them small. So, what happened to that?

Fast and Portable Storage (great alternative to Flash).......2007-11-04
Ditch the AutoSync software, it is limited in scope and buggy as well. This is your data we're talking about here. Sony just does not do software well (read: "root kit" fiasco).
But the drive itself is excellent, albeit bulkier than I would like (in all fairness it IS miraculously small for a hard drive). You can get greater capacity at USB stick size, but this has faster read/write times than Flash, so that is the tradeoff to keep in mind. I recommend reformatting it to NTFS for increased performance. This may prove tricky at first, but a Google search on the topic should yield helpful clues.
For XP (and maybe Vista) this is perfection, best reviews, and best bargain. See below for my settings........2007-10-28
Not positive about longevity, but only good reviews so far, vs. 'early breakdown' reports for most similar items by Maxtor, IO Magic, etc. If you use Vista, the autosynchronization might not work but there are free similar installs from PortableApps. I bought 2 from Staples on clearance so shop around.
Instructions are refreshingly sparse and generally not needed--except it took me a few days of head-scratching to realize I had to 'select drive' from the drop-down list to start it working. Then for some reason, I also simply had to be patient for several days before it was possible to 'view' past versions. Now it works beautifully.
Plugged this in the back of my Dell desktop. I still archive to CD on occasion, but no need to bother frequently with manual backups. Aaaahhhh... the combination of less bother with greater peace of mind is perhaps a small thing but such a relief in this hectic world. I bought a second to take my entire desktop with me on travels.
My settings.
First, I minimized my documents folder, storing photos and anything not in use onto 60-cent archival CD's. I removed the 'my downloads' folder away from 'My Documents' and on to the top level of the 'C' drive, so that all those disposable .exe files would not clog up the backup. (If I buy an important download I immediately burn it to CD.)
For 'Drive Settings' I have the storage limit set for 4 GB on the Sony Microvault (half the space). Then for 'Advanced Settings' I asked for 3 past versions, which evidently it stores on the desktop computer, and allowing these versions to take up 12 GB. For the 'synchronization schedule' I checked 'on media insert' and 'on file close.' Other options that I un-checked are 'manual' and 'every XX minutes.'
If you are working on a PhD thesis or something, you can tell it to backup automatically every 30 minutes and store 10 versions. However, 3 past versions already need 3 times the disc space of the originals! So, I would caution against going beyond that.
A few small nuisances.
1. I just as soon the window of this synchronization program did not pop open every time I turn on my computer. Maybe there's an option to stop this but I can't find it.
2. Dec. 16, 2007. After several months, I kept getting this annoying pop-up message. 'Storage size exceeded. Deleting oldest versions.' Etc.
Evidently, the problem was created by using Nero to edit some video files. I was careful not to allow Nero to use any 'documents' folders to store any of the files I created. However Nero still persistently created 'Nero' subfolders with substantial files within my Documents folder. Using the AutoSync control panel, I managed to un-check these specific subfolders for synchronization, and then 'save settings.' However it was not so obvious how to delete the Nero subfolders already backed-up. For this, I had to manually open: My Computer . . . USB Storage . . . AutoSync . . . Dell 2400 [name of main computer] . . . My Documents. There I found the backup of My Documents, and deleted the Nero subfolders.
I suppose the lesson learned is: any time a program auto-creates subfolders that may fall within the AutoSync...
a. Try to stop it from doing that.
b. If you can not stop it, do not repeatedly delete those auto-created subfolders. Instead, open the AutoSync control panel, un-check the unwanted subfolders, and 'Save Settings.'
c. Also on occassion, manually open the USB Microvault . . . browse to the 'Auto Sync' folder . . . etc. . . and manually delete any unwanted backups.
d. One week after I first posted this review... J. Riddle's review here confirmed that this MicroVault is excellent, but said to "ditch" the Sony Autosync program and convert from FAT to NTFS. Evidently J. Riddle knows more than I do. However I have not found his advanced suggestions to be necessary.
