This drive carried me through my last year of grad school. It was indispensable for syncing files between the school computers and my desktop, as well as backing up files. I've never had an issue with it.

Don't buy.......2007-04-02

This drive failed after 2 months of very careful use. Since there is no serial number on the drive and I threw away the packaging (big mistake)
there is no way to exchange it.

Very Cheap, Very Bad!!!.......2007-03-23

I baught a 6gb drive & after only 3 months of minimal use it failed. I tried to call the phone # on the warranty card but it is disconnected. I tried to put in a service request on the website, but it requires a serial # which is not on the device. I have received no responce to any of my inquiries.

Great drive UNTIL it died. I used it for work purposes, transporting files, etc. Then, after about 6 months of use, it died. Basically, my computer didn't recognize it when I would plug it in to a USB port.

Super Drive.......2007-09-25

I've had this model drive for over 2 years and I have never had a single problem with it. I take it everywhere with me and I'm not always gentle, but this drive has outdone every expectation I had of it. I know it may not be as fast as over drives, but at the time it was the biggest drive I could get for school and as I said it has taken a beating and still performed flawlessly for me. It's good points outweigh the slow speed.

Loved It Until It Died!.......2007-07-23

After two months of use, one day the computer stopped recognizing the drive. I called Seagate, spent an hour on the phone troubleshooting with them only to learn that the drive is basically dead. My company's IT dept. confirmed this.

When I called warranty service, Seagate said the warranty had expired. I told them the drive was only a few months and there is a one-year warranty so how could the warranty have expired? Very frustrating so now I have to send all kinds of proof for a product that was a gift, pretty challenging. Also their service center is in India so you get occassional bad phone connections and some difficulty communicating.

More than anything, the massive loss of data is really, really bad. I got a quote from them to recover the data: $1,400. I don't have that kind of money to get my data back.

Great Product.......2007-05-10

It's unfortunate that others have had difficulty with this drive. I'm a teacher who stores student PowerPoints, Podcasts, Word documents, etc. It has held up well with no problems. I bought the pink Komen edition for my personal use and it has worked equally well. I am a Mac user; I wonder if the problems others are having are from a PC?

Have used a different color version for two years now, bringing back and forth from home to work everyday. No problems whatsoever. Speed is about the same as other firewire drives

Bring work home.......2002-01-21

This is the first VST product I've bought---since then, i've only bought VST brand HDs---not just at home, but also at work. Unlike it's brother, it does not rely on a AC adapter for power, which is a real plus when bringing work home. The data transfer is great for a few files, but don't expect speedy transfers when trying to copy huge directories (ie number of files) but in single (or smaller #) large files, the copy speed is great. The hard plastic shell has proven time and again that this is a durrable drive, designed to take more than just desktop abuse. With the two FireWire ports on the back, this drive can be daisy chained with other FireWire products. With great customer support (VST) and my past experiences with their products, I would recommend this drive for both the office and home.

Makes too much noise.......2001-08-31

I have the 30 GB portable firewire hard drive. The hard drive is great because of the size which makes it easy to carry around. The issues I have with my drive is that it makes a buzzing sound when it is mounted. It's louder than any drive I've ever had and becomes annoying after a few minutes. I wrote VST support to verify that it's suppose to buzz and have not heard back from them for 2 days. I call their support line (not toll free) and I'm constantly on hold forever.
Also, I was disappointed with the color of the hard drive because all the pictures that are associated with the 'graphite' color looks gray. The actual color of the 'graphite' color is a light grayish blue. (It's less attractive then the gray, so don't get too hooked on the gray because you'll be pretty disappointed.)

VST make very nice stuff. Good software, useful website. This drive has been a workhorse, it's great for moving large files to and from work, it's been very reliable, I don't have a bad thing to say about it except that it's a little more expensive than other firewire drives.

This Hard drive is decent. Its kinda slow 4,200 rpm compared to the newer 5,400 and 7,200 rpms. However if your just using it to hold photos and other various files... its a good buy. 6 gb is perfect for a college student that has to carry c++ code and images to class. A plus for this HD is the sleek look of it. If your looking for a simple storage device but cool looking, I recommend this hd. It will have all your friends looking at your hard drive.
