Dream Drive.......2007-11-08
I bought this to store my music and videos. Works perfectly. It's silent, doesn't overheat, doesn't crash, starts up fast, and transfers files fast. Not much else to say. I use this to store the majority of my music and videos. I play them straight from the drive without any hangups.
There was one review that said it came with a usb port. Mine did not. Which is fine, since I specifically purchased this because it was firewire. The brushed aluminum case looks nice sitting next to my macbook pro.

This is a great way to backup data. No more pawing through stacks of DVDs or rewinding tapes. I like that it has a power button so that I can leave it plugged into the firewire port then just flick it on for backup.
Crashed Within Days.......2007-09-27
Yes, I see all of the glowing reviews of this drive, but to be balanced, I bought one, installed it on my Mac on Friday as a backup drive, it worked fine for three days, and by Monday it was clicking loudly and wouldn't spin up. So, I guess for every nine of these that are good there's one that's bad. I'll probably spend more and get a Maxtor/Seagate/Western Digital.

These drives run nearly silently. They remain cool, even after hours of video editing or animation rendering. After eight months, they have yet to cause any problem at all.

This drive is noisier than other external hard drives I've used (Seagate, Maxtor), but works well for system backups. The blue LED on the front is very bright. Includes a dual-voltage power supply.

D.O.A........2007-12-31
After reading many reviews on Amazon, I purchased this SimpleTech External Hard Drive Firewire/USB 250G in April 2006. Like some of us, I procrastinated (backing up my data should be a priority, but isn't) and got around to using the drive today. I figured Dec. 31 would be before the New Year; a good New Year's resolution to not procrastinate. So, today I unwrapped it, plugged it in, followed all instructions, and discovered it is D.O.A. (dead on arrival).
The red light will come on indicating power, but the green light indicating hard drive activity is not lit. I have been through the troubleshooting guide. The green light was on for all of one minute indicating the drive was working briefly. The drive died within five minutes of opening the box.
Initially unwrapping the drive -- not using it; just opening it -- a couple of months ago, I noticed the A/C adapter was missing from the original package. SimpleTech sent me a new one. I do not think the D.O.A. is caused by the A/C adapter, since there is power to the drive.
I will call SimpleTech and swap out this D.O.A. drive. While disappointed that the drive is D.O.A, I am glad that I didn't transfer my data to it first, and then have it die. I cannot recommend this product.
Tried it in spite of poor reviews. Shouldn't have........2006-03-20
Setup was straight forward and for three days it worked fine. On the third day, I heard a loud clattering noise as though something came loose inside. The drive could not be recognized after that.
Based on some other reviews (one person had worked through 3 drives before success) I decided to get refund rather than replacement. I then purchased a LaCie drive and have been very impressed with performance.
Okay Hard drive but..........2005-12-30
As for the price, this is very nice hard drive. It has free space of 232GB and installation was not problem and it was shipped fast as well. This is quite light and design is pretty cool too.
However, the high pitch distracting sound (apart from the normal hard drive fan sound) gets my nerves often especially when I use it for a long time. Just reminds me when I took ear tests in high school. Remember those quiet but high pitch sound? Also the hard drive gets quite hot after an hour or so and it makes you feel like turning it off just in case the hard drive breaks all the files saved, (which happened to a lot of my buddies).
Unreliable. Stopped working after less than six months........2005-12-17
I had two of these devices fail on me in the span of one year! I bought this device with the intention of doing backups to a small group of servers in my workplace. One day I plugged in the USB 2.0 interface and nothing happened. The Power LED came on, but none of my computers would recognize the drive. Thank goodness the hard drive (and my data) was still intact. I had the hard drive removed and placed into another SimpleTech hard drive enclosure. It worked fine for about six months, then yesterday the same thing happened again! The hard drive comes on but my computers could not see it. I will never ever buy another SimpleTech product again.

Here is my experience with the frive to date, if anything changes I will update this review.
The shape of the power plug is power surge friendly (yippee). My newer HP pavilion zd8000 laptop with Windows XP Media Center (in a docking station) recognized the USB 2.0 device and was ready to go in seconds. It was preformatted in NTFS. It has a quiet humm but easily tolerable. Since it was just recognized as another HD it was assigned the next availible drive letter.
The Backup software is impressive and requires an easy installation. It does not provide any built in disaster recovery. I already performed a full backup and will perform incremental backups once a week. For additional security I will still use a native windows backup copied directly to this drive. Backup options include a standard carbon copy type, a single file compressed (like a zip file), and a multiple archive file version.
I ran video and music directly from the drive with no problems or performance issues.
It was just what I had hoped for.
I have a suggestion to people backing up lots of digital video. Consider buying 6-8 packs of video tapes for approx $15 and using those to offload video. You get more MB for your dollar.

Not a good buy........2005-12-22
I have built computers for a living and so consider myself an expert on new installations. This hard-drive did not "automatically" install on a new Windows XP system (or any other XP system I tried) as it was supposed to. No drivers were available in the package, and none on the website. As it supposedly doesn't need any, they are in fact non-existent.
The drive did show up eventually in Explorer, but my Device Manager showed a big glaring yellow question mark (which is not particularly reassuring for a storage/backup device).
As it was supposed to work and did show up in Explorer, I did use it and it worked successfully. 4 months of very light usage (I turn it off when not in use due to its low life expectancy from other reviews on other sites) and it has now kicked the bucket and no longer works.
Customer support never answered any of my emails or the phone, and additionally never provided my rebate. Their website is not helpful at all.
Other review sites have provided very low stars for all of the above reasons; Amazon didn't so I thought I'd let you know to avoid this company and this product. Which is a shame because it does look good and the usb2/firewire combination was extremely helpful.

I've been through two of these drives (IOGear Ion Combo 250GB) in the past 10 days. The first arrived DOA. no big deal, it happens. I ordered the second one from amazon.com, just to start completely fresh, and it stopped working after 5 MINUTES!!!
a call to tech support got me even more mad. their solution was to swap drives with me. sounds fair. until i found out it was going to take AT LEAST 10 DAYS FOR THEM TO SHIP IT OUT while they "work on some drives there!" so i'm supposed to wait around for them to fix up a refurbished drive and ship it to me in replacement of a drive i paid full price for?
i don't think so.
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM IOGEAR. 3 year warranty or not, you will be sorry!
