Sony Noise-Canceling Headphones - MDRNC6

Product Description

Sony Headphones (MDR-NC6) Sony's MDR-NC6, Noise Canceling Headphones --which means you'll hear more

Amazon.com Product Description

Tired of taking your CD or MP3 player onto a plane only to hear the guy next to you better than the music itself? Do away with the problem for good with the MDR-NC6 noise-canceling headphones, which reduce ambient sound by a dramatic 10 dB so you can enjoy your favorite music distraction-free. The headphones work by synthesizing ambient sound with the noise-canceling circuit, thus reducing the commotion before it reaches your ears. In the meantime, the MDR-NC6's neodymium magnets deliver a wide-ranging frequency response and clear, rich tones whether you're listening to delicate arias or ear-busting metal. The headphones serve other purposes as well, such as blocking at sound while you're trying to nap or honing in on hard-to-understand passages of a voice recording. Appropriately for a travel unit, the headphones fold compactly for easy storage in a carry-on or backpack. They also fit comfortably over the ears thanks to the soft ear pads, which listeners can wear for hours with no ill effects. The MDR-NC6 also includes a plug adapter for connecting to a stereo or, alternatively, an airline dual jack for enjoying in-flight music services.

What's in the Box
MDR-NC6 headphones, carrying pouch, plug adapter, user's manual.

3 out of 5 stars Ok For The Price.......2007-12-11

I just returned Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones to Amazon for a refund. Sure, they were better as far as comfort and noise reduction but they were defective. Less than a week old and the right earphone stopped working!

I was in Radio Shack and saw these Sony headphones and bought them because they fit my head which is small. They are not very comfortable, and I wouldn't recommend wearing them on a 12 hour flight, but they're decent for the price. Great sound, slight hiss from the noise canceling, but it's not that bad, kind of like white noise.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2007-10-29

The sound is crisp and clear with a strong bass and is comfortable. What you need to know about "noise cancelling" is that it greatly reduces low range noise, such as a plane's engines or a car's rumbling. Anything mid to high range (like conversations) do not get eliminated. Also, I found a strange vertigo sensation when I put mine on. The reverse mechanism for 'noise cancelling' causes what I would describe as an "empty fullness" of a noise void (I know that sounds weird, but that's my sensation of it). With music, however, that sensation seems to go away.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-09-12

These are pretty good headphones. What's cool is that they come with a little carrying pouch which makes it really easy to carry around in my backpack. Not ridiculously huge like some heaphone which is really nice. All around nice pair of headphones.

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth it........2005-01-06

The noise canceling is quite surprising for the low price, but there is a rather distracting hiss present when the feature is on. The sound quality is decent, but not surprising in any way. The features of the phones may be redeeming, but I hardly know as I couldn't keep them on my head for more than five minutes. As soon as I put them on I noticed a strong pressure from the hard plastic piece that rests on your head at the top, as well as a painful pressure on my hears from the flat, relatively unpadded ear pieces. It didn't take more than a couple minutes for it to become unbearable. There would be no way for me to comfortably use these headphones for any amount of time because they hurt my head. This may be just the way they fit my head, but see if you can try a pair on before purchasing. I will be returning mine today - and they are a pain to get back in the packaging.

3 out of 5 stars pretty decent, but no Bose.......2004-12-28

The term "noise canceling" isn't quite accurate. "Noise reducing" would be much more accurate. When turned on (they use a AAA battery), they nearly remove any consistent background noise, and seriously reduce conversations (imagine listening to someone underwater). The acoustics are pretty good, and on par with what you would expect from Sony.

However, there seems to be some very light hissing when the noise reduction is turned on. Depending on the music you're listening to, it's not really noticeable, but if you're a big classical fan, these probably aren't the headphones for you. They also tend to press against your ears pretty hard (at least mine), and this may be by design, but they can get a bit uncomfortable after a few hours.

Overall pretty decent, especially considering the price, but if you're looking for true noise canceling, go with Bose. You'll shell out quite a bit more (~$300), but you'll get what you're after.

Sony MDR-NC6 Noise Canceling Headphones

Product Description

Shut off the outside world with MDR-NC6 noise canceling headphones. Ambient sound can be reduced over 10dB at 300Hz, which means you'll hear more music, and less plane/train/bus noise. Noise canceling headphones are great for work, traveling, or even when you're trying to sleep in a loud place. The MDR-NC6 have a slim swivel folding design, making them more compact for storage. Includes plug adapter to connect directly to a stereo or dual jack of in-flight music services.

Amazon.com Product Description

Small enough to keep with you at all times and ideal for achieving peace and quiet in planes, trains, buses, and cars, Sony's MDR-NC6 noise-canceling over-ear headphones reduce perceived outside noise by more than 70 percent (up to 10 dB at 300 Hz) so you can hear musical nuances against a quieter background.

The headphones' noise-canceling circuit senses outside noise using tiny, built-in microphones and sends an equal-but-opposite canceling signal to the headphone drivers, effectively blocking solid-state (continuous) noise from 40 to 1,500 Hz. It's especially effective on noises like air-conditioning systems, freeway rumble, and airplane engines (from a passenger's perspective).

The switchable noise-canceling circuitry runs for approximately 30 hours on a single AAA alkaline battery. When noise canceling is off, the headphones continue to function for standard music listening (and with slightly better sound quality). The headphones' neodymium-magnet diaphragms deliver powerful sound.

The headphones and their swiveling earcups fold for easy storage, and a special supplied adapter facilitates use of the headphones with an airplane's audio system.

What's in the Box
Headphones, a carry pouch, an in-flight adapter, and a user's manual.

1 out of 5 stars Self-defeating Design.......2007-12-26

Do not buy! I don't really understand what the designers were thinking. The sound/power cord runs through the swivel point on the ear cup. Over time(not long), the wires rub against the plastic hole which cuts through, stopping all functionality. I have lost respect for Sony as whole for producing such a poorly designed product.

4 out of 5 stars Device classification: "Smart ***" . . . !.......2007-12-24

Honestly, I bought these headphones thinking "Oh, wow! These'll be great for me to chill with while I'm at work or driving or trying to take a nap!" Sure... they... were for my brother abou' the the time of the initial purchase, buuut... who needs brothers anyway? So, they're mine. I'll buy him and my other bro some also. : )

When I bought this headset, I expected HEADPHONES. Normal, everyday headphones with a bit better quality. I didn't give a thought to this noise-canceling stuff. I'm a naturally relaxed and worry free person, so little hums and buzzes and muttering and clapping and clanking and stepping and prepping and slurping and breaking glass and screaming babies and a texas wind blowing 70 miles per hour against poorly built houses and work places and old suburbans' rattling metal hulls and- . . . OKAY, noise canceling! Right!

Well, anyway, on to the review. The sound quality is, as far as I can tell up to this point, acceptably good quality. In fact, for the price I payed, it's spectacular; even pleasing and well-satisfying. Everything is right, and it can deal a happy-cool load of bass. Unlike other, smaller and/or even less expensive models or brands, this set can give hint as to the existence of the LCD volume bar. Now, I've owned several similar headsets before it - all of which have been destroyed by a forgetful leaving and... sitting . . . soooo not fat - but I'd like to give these an 8/10 for their above-basic music (with noise cancel off; HOLD ON! I'm getting to it!) rep.

Now, as for noise canceling feature, which I know all of you are anxious to hear about, I say "finally." The last time I heard about noise canceling was when people were visiting my house to try to sell me some $200-$600 headphones. This does, yes, exclude that thanksgiving in 2003 when I accidentally invited my aunt's twice removed (and, really, non-family-affiliated) step-sister's great great grandmother's old-co-worker's friend's great grandson and, by the suggestion of my aunt, we all used noise-canceling earplugs for a couple of days.
. . . But I'm just trying to get attention. . . I lied, anyway.

Noise Canceling Feature:

By price- 9/10

[I'm happy to announce that our long awaited budget-friendly noise canceling feature is a hit! It works as Sony advertises... or, you know, mainly. If you understand the technology backing this feature, then I'll leave it at "'nuff said, works as expected to." However, if you're one of those types that can't find a TV remote digging through all of your 40 year old shoes and stockings, let'a'lone operate one. . . Well, it works this way: Sound goes in (microphones are outside of the headphones, on the actual phone's external surface), the mini-COMPUTER ; D inside of the set kills that sound in a really cool way, and you hear the figurative sum of whatever you're playing on a CD player or music device plus everything coming in as a result of inequal cancelation (not-good- killing -of-outside-sound) that was supposed to happen in the set's COMPUTER. Make more sense? Well, no, of course not... but my point in all of this is--- "These headphones will quiet annoying noises, not take them out of existence completely."

By Type Of Product: 7/10

Let's admit it... there are some badbutt products out there. Sure, they may cost you your house, your dog, and your dog's garden-gnome's friend's ex...something...twice removed (whatever) person thing, but they work a whole hell of a lot better when it comes to noise cancellation. So, if you want something that expensive, get something that expensive. Me? I'd just be too worried about crushing or losing it to actually want to purchase it. 7/10 isn't a BAD rating, so don't fool yourself! : )

We have two more to go.

Comfort: 7/10

I don't have a big, fat head. These don't crush my ears, even after an hour of continuous nap-listening, and they don't feel too tight or too loose. Judge for yourself. If you think you should be wearing a pillow, wear a dang pillow. Here's a quick hint: Hurry, get a measuring tape. Measure your head . . . Now, what did it say? No, not the tape! The fact that you actually DID that! You must have a fat head and no self esteem; don't buy these headphones. : P

Build quality: 6/10

Okay, this is an honest score. I don't think they were build with considerable care. Now, don't get me wrong... the design is nice, especially for such cheap "upper-line" headphones... but at the same time, it's almost like sony had them two-piece cup-molded. They could have gotten rid of the plastic witness marks and such, at the very least. This shouldn't matter so much, in any case, but many people have some loose "parts" (*COUGH*) and won't buy a plain product.

Well guys, that's mah review. Just so you'll know, in case you still haven't figured it out, these headphones will PLAY MUSIC and are intended TO play music. Play music with them! Please! If you fly enough to want to go out and buy some $400 headphones that you KNOW you'll only use to shut crying babies and yappy people up with, don't buy these instead. Continue to your specialty sites, where they will happily spread the love of internet virii and false idolatry.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good. Not Great........2007-12-24

I got these to block out noisy cubicle cohorts. When I switch on the AAA-powered noise canceling feature, the ones farther away can't be heard anymore. If I also pipe music through these, then the closer ones disappear too. WoW!

These are nowhere near as comfy as my Bose Quiet Comfort 3's, but I didn't want to bring those into the office and have them walk off. I'd actually have to say that these Sony heaphones are the least comfortable over-the-ears headphones I've ever owned. I've had some inexpensive ones in the past without noise canceling that I've used on all-niters. I seriously could not last a few hours with these on. They are for temporary relief of noisy co-workers only.

3 out of 5 stars It works.........2007-12-23

These are nothing fancy, and seem like they are a bit on the fragile side, but, they do work and they are reasonably priced for what you get.

4 out of 5 stars I was surprised!.......2007-12-21

I thought this product was really good. To tell you the truth I didn't expect much of it since the price was considerably different from similar products. It's not 100% sound proof, though, and that's why I didn't give 5 stars. But I almost never use the Noise Cancelling option since the headphones themselves are already sufficient to muffle a lot of the sound. I'm a law student and spend all day in the library, with my laptop and this headphone. I need it to concentrate and I think so far it has done a good job. What Sony promisses, it delivers.
