The unlocked PalmOne Treo 650 boasts all the legendary features of the venerable Treo 600, plus a whole lot more. Now with Bluetooth, a higher resolution screen, a removable battery, and an improved keyboard, the Treo 650 is once again on the cutting edge of Smartphone technology. It offers all the functionality of a high-end Palm OS-powered PDA, a cell phone and a VGA camera. Simply put, it's the ultimate mobile office companion.

Design

Click the image to get a closer look at the Treo 650's features.
Under the hood, the Treo 650 features Palm OS 5.4, 32MB of RAM (23MB available for end user storage), and an Intel PXA270 312 MHz processor. The design retains the same popular form factor as the Treo 600 with a few subtle, yet significant, changes. The unit's screen has been dramatically enhanced to support 320 x 320 resolution and the full QWERTY keypad has been redesigned for greater ease of use. The top of the unit features an expansion card slot for SD and MMC-based memory and expansion cards. There's also an infrared port here for line of sight data transfers, as well as a handy switch for turning off the phone's ringer. A five-way navigator controls most of the phone's menus and operating system functions, while quick application buttons on either side of the navigator get you to your favorite applications in a snap. The left side of the unit features a volume up/down toggle plus a handy user-customizable button that can be assigned to any phone or PDA function. The rear of the Treo 650 houses a loudspeaker, as well as the VGA (640x480) camera unit. A touchscreen stylus can be tucked away on the right side of the phone. Meanwhile, a combined charging, data, and accessory attachment port is housed on the bottom of the unit, as is a standard 2.5 mm stereo headset jack.

Calling and PDA Features
All the of the Treo 650's phone and PDA functions are designed to provide an integrated, seamless experience. For instance, you can type in the name or initials of a contact on the keypad to dial them. Or, use the touchscreen and stylus to copy information from an email and quickly paste it into another email or text message. All of the latest phone features folks expect are built-in, too, like a handsfree speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones, a vibrate mode and picture caller ID. The capacity of the unit's address book is only limited by the amount of internal and expansion memory available. Use the Treo 650's Bluetooth capability to wirelessly sync your contacts with your PC or Mac (yes, Mac!). Headsets, car kits and other wireless peripherals can also be paired with the unit via Bluetooth.

The Treo 650 is also a fully functional Palm OS device. That means that a huge library of applications, from spreadsheets to word processors to games, can be added to the Treo 650. It's easy to perform multiple tasks like checking your calendar while talking on the phone or dialing calls directly from your contacts list. Familiar Palm OS software ships with the handset including calendar, calculator, clock, contacts, memo, and task management applications. Real Player for video and MP3 playback, VersaMail email client, and DataViz Documents to Go for mobile access to spreadsheets and text documents, are also included.

The unit's memory expansion slot allows you to transfer music, photos, and video from your desktop. Or, use it to load additional games and applications.

Messaging and Internet
The device fully supports SMS and MMS messaging for rapid exchange of pictures, text and video. You can even get mobile email and web browsing. The Treo 650's web browser supports full-size web pages, and you can enter secure pages with 128-bit SSL encryption. POP3 email accounts provided by SBC, BellSouth, Yahoo, Earthlink, Comcast and AT&T Worldnet are all compatible with the 650's email client application. IMAP and Exchange-based email systems are also supported, and you can view photos, HTML, Word, Excel and PowerPoint attachments.

Vital Statistics
The PalmOne Treo 650 weighs 6.30 ounces and measures 4.40 x 2.30 x .90 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 6 hours of digital talk time, and up to 300 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 800/900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Phone But Lacks 3G/EVDO.......2007-11-17

The Palm Treo 650 is a great smartphone for Palm users. It features a great full size QWERTY keyboard, mail syncing, and your common cell phone features. Although this is an older phone I love it to death but it does have some shortcomings. The Treo 650 lacks any kind of EVDO connection or Wifi support - which are essential if you wish to surf the internet. Regarding the actual looks of the phone - the huge antenna is very ugly and a pain to have in your pocket. The thing about the Treo 650 is it is a great phone with smartphone capabilities. It would be great for a teenager who wishes to text alot. Even after purchasing my new smartphone I feel that the Treo 650 makes a better phone. The software is quick and snappy, the messaging and contact information is perfect, and it is very durable. Overall, I feel the Treo 650 is worth considering as a cell phone if you are looking for a cell phone with some smartphone capabilities.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2007-11-12

I am probably one of those happy amazon customers who has had a terrible experience (every word I mean) with this purchase. I am stuck with a malfunctioning handset and stuck with no choice but to send it back.

I was clearly not expecting this - though I did happen to read thru some reviews strongly recommending against this purchase! The problem with the purchase is - the KEYPAD JUST DOESNOT WORK - it FREEZEs. The misery and frustration doesnot stop here - I was clearly refused of any exchange / swap with the Palm Support in Singapore - simply because it was purchased in the US. Wonder, are we actually living in a Global Community or is it just "nice to hear phrases"!

My advice - donot buy it - else be ready to be faced with malfunctions and Zero support. I plan to return it back to Amazon.

2 out of 5 stars Not what you want if you're just an average phone user.......2007-10-29

First things first, I'm not a person who needs a smartphone...plain and simple. I read the pretty flattering reviews on the Treo 650 whilst on the hunt for a new cell and decided to go with it.

Coming from a Razr to Treo is a culture-shock, make no mistake about it. Everything--and I mean EVERYTHING--is different, which I did expect. And at first, yes, this was a great phone, and was a joy to just play around with. After a couple of months, though, is when the problems began to surface. I didn't get the disc to sync the phone up with my computer when I originally got the phone so I had to dig around Treo's website to find the program. No big deal. However, that took me a couple months to find it and once I did I already had a lot of contacts, pictures, some videos, just a lot of stuff I didn't want to lose.

That's when I synced my phone with my computer. It wiped out everything with no warning, nothing. So I was left with the same phone I received two months before when I first bought it.

Doesn't end there though. I'm forced to reset my phone at least every other day or else I won't get texts. Sure, it sounds like just a little speed bump but it proves to be a pain in the long run. Oh, and unless you have internet access on your Treo, don't even think about getting picture texts. For those of you that love your ringtones you bought, you don't get them on this phone unless you have internet access. And if you're like me, you're not willing to shell out 90+ bucks a month just to have your favorite song as a ringtone.

There are a couple pluses though. I do love the way that messaging is set up, in the conversation form. The contact screen is easy to use, though it is kind of hard to screw that up. The calendar option is nice for important dates that you need to remember, though for me those dates are few and far between. The memo option is also nice, something I actually use a lot more than I expected. The memory, sanz SD card, is impressively large and the pictures and videos are, for the most part, really good for a cell phone. And, contrary to popular belief, the in-call volume is plenty loud enough.

Basically, it's all give and take with the Treo. There are certain aspects I'm definitely gonna miss when I buy a new phone (which I am, this phone has let me down one to many times) but there are enough things that bug me to no end that just don't justify the price I paid for it. The only person I could honestly recommend this to is the one that absolutely has to have their day mapped out and maybe a business owner. Other than that, stear clear from it if you're not completely ready for it.

5 out of 5 stars very positive.......2007-10-09

The palm treo that I purchased is a very handy piece of equipment that keeps me in touch even while on the go.The internet is something that is important to me and this phone has got it.I will recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Don't want anything else.......2007-09-14

I have had a Treo 650 for about two years now. I am a cell phone junkie and like to have the newest technology but I love this phone so much I won't even think of getting something else. I won't even "upgrade" to a newer Treo. As a matter of fact the one I have in use now is my second. I bought the first one used on the internet to test it out and the second new. It reboots from time to time but only if I have the text message notification and try to delete messages with out clearing the notifications. Not a big deal at all.

I have downloaded Ringo so I can use MP3's for ringers which was my biggest gripe of all.

The camera takes ok pictures but I am not expecting professional quality from my phone. Just a snapshot to remember the moment. If you really want good pictures take your camera for pete's sake.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Simple, and works well.......2007-11-12

I previously used Palm's own case for my 650, which surprisingly didn't fit the Treo well (it fit quite loosely inside). This clip works great for me, it only adds the minimum of bulk to the already large Treo. I've used this clip for several months in a manufacturing environment, and it only dropped the phone once (and I immediately felt the clip get caught and open when it did). I also like the fact that the keyboard and screen face inward to protect them. I have only two minor criticisms. First, I found the belt clip was uncomfortable until I started wearing it upside down (the end of the clip is hooked, so it's never slipped off my belt this way). The second criticism is that the spring loaded clip that secures the phone occasionally contacts the sd card and partially ejects it. Neither issue is enough to really bother me, I'm very happy with this holster.

5 out of 5 stars Much better..........2007-07-26

I've been using my Treo 650 for years, and the Swivel Clip Holster by Seidio was the only practical and usable solution for me. Unfortunately, the clip's plastic would fatigue and lose its grip, eventually failing (once with unfortunate results on concrete). Fortunately, it has been redesigned using a spring rather than the resilience of the plastic. My only complaint now is that on rare occasions, my SD card will eject when I removing the phone from the clip. It's not enough of an issue to dock a star, so five stars - I highly recommend it for any Treo 650 owner looking for the ideal protective belt clip.
