Gambled and Won.......2007-07-09
Before purchasing this TV, I had never seen it in person. I saw the 40" JVC next to a Sony and the difference was noticeable. The clarity and crispness of the picture was incredible. I read all the reviews and decided to roll the dice on the 46".
I could not be happier. It is a great TV with a great picture. The TV is partnered up with a Yamaha YSP 1100 sound projector. This combination has taken our home theater experience to another level. I would suggest getting a professional to install and make sure to get an HD box. You will not be disappointed.
I highly recommend this TV.
Absolutely beautiful!!!.......2007-05-29
This TV is everything I hoped it would be. I spent a month reading every forum and review I could find before I finally picked the JVC LT-46FN97. If you read AVSForum, you will see that many highly touted brands have chronic problems (clouds, flashlights, banding, eggs, HDMI handshake problems....). In reading a 47 page thread about the JVC, none of these problems were ever mentioned. I had finally found a 46" LCD that worked.
Not only does this unit have a beautiful picture, but the sound is the best I've ever heard from a TV. My wife thought I had the home theater speakers turned on, the first time she heard it. Also, looks great in the room. The matte black finish and the clean front panel really adds to the looks of the room.
Buy this TV!
We love this TV!.......2007-04-11
We love this TV!
It's connected to our DVR by HDMI and to a LG Home Theater in a Box with an optical digital cable. Great HD picture, great sound.
This TV is amazing! Non-Tech Review from Gift Giving Spouse.......2007-03-08
I actually made the decision to purchase this not only because of the size, HD quality and price, but mostly due to the great reviews on this thing. Read them, they really are informative on this particular item.
I have to say, the delivery service alone was fantastic. They called us before, during and after the delivery. We were impressed with that aspect even before we tore open the box and got to experience the tv itself.
Wow. This is coming from a person who can care less about televisions. I now know why people get hooked on these things. Even in the daylight, the picture is clear as a bell.
Sound is just right too. There is a speaker all along the entire bottom of the TV, so the surround sound is realistic. No enhancements needed (thankfully for the wallet).
Our first show we watched in HD was so BIG it was dizzying. Kind of like a mini-Imax theater in your home. We hooked our Xbox 360 to it and the HD games are mesmerizing.
I can't say much to add to the technical side of the reviews above and below me.
This TV was a huge value.
It does get very warm if left on all night (not something I'd recommend).
Get HD cable if you have it. Otherwise don't bother, since you'd be wasting the full potential of this thing. Big difference between HD and normal cable.
Got this for my husband who was amazed that I could get such the "perfect TV". How'd I do it? READ THE REVIEWS. TAKE NOTES. Get the right size for your home. This 46" is measured 46" from one upper corner to the opposite lower corner. Get out a tape measure and do the same to get a feel for how big you want to go. It is HUGE if you are not used to anything over 36" in old-school tv's.
Get the highest HD # out there (that 1080 p thing) and you are good to go if you are shopping around.
Also, we compared the projector versus plasma versus flat panel and came up with flat panel to be the best option.
Plasma is out if you have kids. One flying object and the screen could lose pixels (or whatever you call them). Projectors are out. Do you know how technical and huge those things still are? Wait a little longer until they get smaller and not so IF-Then -Else-ish as far as what type you need.
Flat panels - best decision we made this year so far in gadgets.
Now go read the more technical reviews and make up your own mind.
No need to search for another TV!!!.......2007-02-24
As a subscriber to Consumer Reports, I tend to consider all of the products that they mention as top-rated; however, I also do my own due diligence since I tend not to believe everything I read. However, with that said, I also value my time and would rather read about a product on the internet than go to a store and waste my time with sales people. (I also live in the city and do not own a car). So, when I read about this TV in Consumer Reports as THE top-rated LCD TV on the market, I was very excited since I was in the market to buy my first flat screen. I immediately went online to get more information about it and I must say, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase, which accounts for the most expensive single electronic item that I own. I am someone that will pay more for quality; however, I also like to seek out the best value for my money. With that said, I really can not be more pleased with this purchase! This is truly a superb value for the money. I also searched the internet for the best price on this TV after I decided to purchase it and Amazon had the overall best price (after shipping was added) which resulted in a $1500 savings from the MSRP in Consumer Reports. Also, with Amazon's "white glove" delivery, the TV was delivered to my home with the utmost in customer service. Considering that I purchased this item from my laptop without leaving my home, I figure I also saved a lot of wasted time by not having to actually go to a store. I also rely heavily on how people rate products and I must say that this product is definitely a 5 out of 5. Please note that you will have to play around with the default picture quality for all 4 Video Status (Standard, Dynamic, Theatre and Game) to get the best picture but once you save them, you will be more than pleased with the results. Plus, you can save each status individually and flip through them to get the best picture once you tune to a particular channel. (I recommend that you play with the picture quality while viewing an HD channel... also, subscribe to HD... $5 extra a month... if you truly want to reach the potential of this TV). Also, the sound quality is fantastic for a TV. I listen to the digital music channels without using a stereo system for now... however, I will probably change that in the future). In summary, this is an excellent TV for the money... hands down. DON'T use the TV with the default settings, however. You will have to read the manual and adjust everything to reach it's potential, so a little patience is needed. I spent about 2 weeks in my spare time reading and adjusting until I got it just right and now I scoff at other TVs because they just don't measure up. I can literally read the on-screen print from 40 feet away with no problem! The picture is so clear, it sometimes hurts your eyes to look at it! (I'm serious). Buy it... you won't regret it. And, oh yeah, the price keeps going up, probably due to demand (and Consumer Reports)... I paid $2300 in January 2007... so, hurry!!!

Amazon.com Product Description
Get maximum enjoyment from your television and DVD playback with the 46-inch JVC LT46FN97 LCD HDTV, which offers a native progressive resolution of 1920 x 1080p. Because 1080p provides twice the resolution of the high definition 720p or 1080i displays found in most HDTVs today, you'll get more vivid pictures--no matter the scene or content. The LT46FN97 delivers outstanding picture quality thanks to JVCÕs Genessa 32-bit CPU video processing, part of JVC's 5th generation DIST (Digital Image Scaling Technology), which seamlessly up-scales any video source to display at full high definition 1080p. Standard definition signals are improved through new Natural Progressive IP conversion, improved scaler performance and a new PLL system that improves the performance of a composite signal.
The Genessa video processor also includes a Digital Video Noise Reduction that reduces the "graininess" for both analog and digital video source, a Block Noise Suppressor that detects and eliminates Òblock noiseÓ, a Mosquito Noise Suppressor that eliminates noise in low bit-rate signals without degrading the image, and a 3D Y/C comb filter with DTV Cross Color Eliminator that uses an advanced 10-bit 3D Y/C separation process to eliminate cross color and dot interference that is imbedded in older source material.
You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the dual HDMI or dual component connections. Its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception (via component or HDMI inputs), and it includes a standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.
This set features a 16:9 aspect ratio, 178-degree viewing angle, 500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, and 1000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.)
The Natural Cinema feature performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.
The set's Digital Super Detail (DSD) correction technology works with the Natural Progressive Circuitry to reproduce completely focused pictures, whether the image is still or highly active. A 5-point Color Management System (CMS) compensates for color range limitations and ensures JVC colors are reproduced with dimension and vivid detail. Other video processing and display features include digital video noise reduction, white character correction circuitry, five video status modes (theater, dynamic, game, standard, and TheaterPro D6500K), and seven aspect ratio modes with EZ Fill feature that enables you to choose the aspect ratio to suit your preferences. Other convenience features include a multi-function timer and standard sleep timer, 10-minute auto shut-off, front panel lock, high-speed channel changer, and V-Chip parental controls.
The audio performance of this set is improved through the use of MaxxBass, digital signal processing that extends the perceived bass performance, and a built-in parametric equalizer for more accurate frequency response. The built-in, front-firing speakers produce 10 watts of power per channel for 20 watts of total power, and it also offers virtual surround sound, advanced tone correction and a volume limiter. It offers the following connection options:
- Composite AV (RCA): 3 in
- S-Video: 2 in
- Component video: 2 in
- HDMI: 2 in
- FireWire (IEEE1394): 2
- PC VGA: 1 in
- RF: 2 in
- Audio output: 1 optical digital out, 1 headphone
Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections.
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Customer Reviews:
JVC stands for excellence.......2007-12-11
I've had this model for almost 6 months and I have no complaints whatsoever on this excellent set. "Troy","Training Day" and "The Aviator" really shine on this set especially in HD!! The set hardly needed calibration yet I did have the Geek squad from Circuit City do it anyway and it looks even better than ever (you could get by without one yet I believe in the long run, calibration will save you in energy costs). It's a shame that JVC tends to advertise their bigger rear projection sets over the LCDs (Best Buy only carries the LCOS). Here's hoping that this will change in the future!!. Life like colors, excellent picture--check it out.
Great TV!.......2007-01-24
I purchased this TV in December, and have found it to be excellent in every way. My HD cable box goes into one HDMI input, and my DVD player goes into the other. The picture quality out of the box was quite good, and it was even better after some adjustments using test patterns. Since I don't have any 1080p inputs, the 1080i limitation was not an issue for me.
While I use an external receiver for audio, the built in audio is surprisingly good as well.
I would highly recommend this set.
Couldn't ask for more!!!.......2007-01-11
I have had this TV for a month and have been extremely pleased. The color and clarity are amazing. Learning to use the remote and menus was not as easy as I might have expected but it did not take long to learn. I did a lot of research before purchasing this TV. Everything I found pointed to this model as having all the things I was looking for. Then when I received my 'Consumer Reports' magazine and this model (smaller screen) was the top rated, that sealed my decision. I could not find this model locally but I was extremely pleased with my purchasing experience with 'Amazon.com'. The price was a good value and the free shipping service added to the value. It arrived in one week.
I could not have asked for more for my money!
Great TV, , , really love this thing.......2006-12-30
We have had our 46 inch JVC for 2 months and it just gets better as it goes along. It handles SD programs very well, of course depending on the quality of the signal. Movies are wonderful to watch on this. Almost 3D like appearance.
Good remote, good menus and the sound is very good too for a built in system. You can spend more money but I don't think you'll find a better TV of this type and size.
Update: We have had this TV for 2 months now and it just gets better as it goes along. Really! The picture is better with better fleshtones and I haven't spent much time at all adjusting it.
I was initially concerned that it does not accept 1080p signal. That really won't make any difference as all but computer and some game signals going to it will be 1080i. This TV has an excellent de-interlacer in it so it will display the signal at 1080p and do it as well as any other set out there. So for my family, this is not a problem.
Neither HDMI Input Works; Poor Customer Support from Amazon, JVC and so-called warranty under additional "Service Contract".......2006-12-10
First of all, I was very excited to get this TV when I had done significant research regarding resolution, color, response rate and price. To get a 1080p TV of this size at this price was almost too good to be true. Alas, it was, as BOTH HDMI inputs do not work. I have two DVD players with HDMI inputs, as well as two satellite receivers with HDMI connections, and tried the TV with all of them. Buying an HD TV without the capability to use the HDMI inputs is worthless.
Hoping that the additional service contract would come in handy, I called to see about getting the TV repaired or a replacement sent out. After trying to deny coverage completely for the item being "used at a business" (it was actually just shipped to my business), the service company then said that there was no coverage under their "2 year" plan during year one EXCEPT FOR power surge coverage. In essence nothing, nada, for your $325.
Do yourself a favor and think twice, three times, or more when you are going to spend this much on an item. It simply isn't worth the hassle.
