Customer Reviews:
What good is a phone if it does not ring?.......2006-01-27
This is my 3rd s710a and still I miss calls because it will not ring (goes right to voice mail. Customer service can not help the cingular store can't help. I plug the phone in at night and sometime during the night it goes into hibernation. I have to turn it off then turn back on to get it to work, and somethings during the day it will just stop ringing. One day I found it strange that the phone was not working so I turned it off then back on and sure enough I missed 8 calls. My wife has the same phone which we purchased at the same time and hers works just fine.
I love this phone! .......2005-07-23
I have had this phone for nearly a month now, and must say I am really happy with it. As a phone it is loud and clear. The signal is strong. The speakerphone is great and people cannot even tell when I'm using it. As far as style goes, it's impressive. Everyone who has seen it either says "WOW! What a great phone!" or "That's too much for me, all I need is a phone to make calls with." I have a feeling they don't want to admit the inferiority of their own phone. That's cool.
Anyways, the controls are great, and you really don't ever have to open the phone unless you need the numbers or letters, for example sending a text message. You can do most everything else with the navigation pad and soft keys. I have read other reviews before I got the phone that complained of the keys being slick and flush with the body. They really aren't that slick and I like the fact they are flush. You can also program the navigation pad with shortcuts. This is really nice and saves many button presses to get to specific features you use a lot. Nice job Sony Ericsson!
Okay for the camera. It looks cool, and is one of the best camera phones you can get in the US. The pics are near photo quality, but still a bit grainy. I afraid you can't throw away your separate digital camera yet. I suspect that within a couple of years camera phones will be true photo quality, I can't wait because I never carry a camera, but I always have my phone. Another gripe is the loud simulated shutter sound that you can't turn off. We can thank all the voyeurs for that one. I also wish that it had a faster capture rate to reduce blurring, if you don't hold it completely still you're gonna have to snap another. And finally, it would be nicer if there was a real flash and not just a light, it works, but you have to turn it on and off, kinda a pain.
The video recorder is okay, although the sound is not very loud unless you are right up to the mic and screaming. But hey, what do you expect from a phone.
Now for the MP3 player. Sounds decent, actually pretty loud for a phone. I do wish there were tracking capabilities, with only pause and play, you have to start at the beginning every time. Again, this is a phone.
The game demos that come with the phone totally suck, and let you play for like 10 seconds. Come on Sony Ericsson, how cheap! For the retail price, you should really get a full game or two. Again, Sony, I'm quite insulted.
Overall, this phone is great at this particular moment in time. I bet by the time my 2 year contract is up, the phones will have photo quality cameras, great MP3 players, hard drives so data storage will not be an issue at all, and video phone capabilities. I can't wait.
Great, but stay close to a power plug........2005-07-06
I have had the phone for several weeks now. I adore the feature set. Yes, at times the phone is a little slow to respond to interrupts, but it's nothing too alarming. Honestly, I think it's amazing what this thing is capable of. Thanks to it having MIDP 1.0 and 2.0, I plan on writing a television remote for it in Java soon (since it also has an IR port). The camera is a fun toy. I find it hard to take very crisp pictures because it requires that I keep still for over 2 seconds. I would say this isn't too much to ask, perhaps I should just cut back on the lattes.
Overall, I would say that this phone is excellent. My only complaint is that it has an appetite for power. But, charging every three days isn't that big of a deal anyhow.
Great phone.......2005-06-30

Style with substance.......2005-06-08
Pros (in the order of importance):
- Brilliant screen. Among the very best out there.
- Beautifully designed user interface.
- Stylish. Looks like a phone Darth Vader would use (yeah I know, a lame Star Wars pun).
- Excellent connectivity options with world class Bluetooth implementation.
- Lots of memory (32 MB internal and includes 32 MB MemoryStick DUO) and expandable, too.
- Strong RF reception and good audio quality.
- Class 10 EDGE and GPRS for speedier Internet access.
- Excellent theme support with tons of excellent themes you can download.
- Great Java support, including Java 3D.
Cons (in the order of importance):
- Measuring 0.96" in thickness, it won't comfortably fit into your pocket (especially your shirt).
- Menu navigation is a bit slow.
- Not a quad-band phone (no 900 MHz GSM).
- Battery life is just decent (lasts about 2 days of typical use, less than a day if you play with it heavily).
- Loud alert sounds, particularly camera shutter.
- Speakerphone volume is a bit low.
- Despite hooplas surrounding its CCD 1.3 mega pixel camera, it will not replace your digital camera.
- Ultimately, swivel keypad area is a novelty.
- Does not support MemoryStick DUO Pro (limited to 128 MB MemoryStick DUO).
- Expensive considering it is not a smartphone.
- Slow HTML rendering (WAP is very good, however).
Like many Sony products, Sony Ericsson S710a leaves strong first impression. It is extremely slick, with metal-like black chassis with substantial feel. I am not a fan of black electronic devices, but this I approve. Everything feels substantial and high quality, to swivel action (it requires a bit of force and cannot easily be done with one hand) and opening the camera lens cover. Turn it on and stunning LCD will greet you. It has 240 by 320 LCD with 262,144 colors on 2.3" screen, which translates to whopping 174 pixels per inch. Everything looks super sharp with paper-like clarity.
Beauty is not skin deep. User interface is equally slick, with sharp and highly readable text and very colorful icon graphics. Navigating the menu is a bit slow from time-to-time due to fancy animation.
My S710a is Star Wars edition, which adds 1 Star Wars theme, 2 Star Wars wallpapers, 2 Star Wars ring tones, Star Wars game demo, Star Wars video clip, and 2 Star Wars movie tickets. Apart from movie tickets and Star Wars theme (default wallpaper looks rather cheesy however), remaining Star Wars contents will please only Star Wars aficionados, if at that. They are not very well thought of in my opinion.
None of these bells and whistles matter if S710a does not work well as a phone which it does. While not quite at the level of Nokia 6230 or 6620 in terms of RF reception, S710a is excellent at holding on to the signal. In fact, it is currently ranked 3rd on Cingular's list of best performing phones. Both inbound and outbound audio are very good, as long as you don't accidentally block tiny microphone hole with your finger. Speakerphone is full-duplex and works well, but it requires an extra button press after the call is connected. I found the speakerphone volume to be a bit on the low side.
Contacts management has been Sony Ericsson's strong point. On S710a, each contact can have 5 phone numbers, email address, web site, photo, custom ring tone, title, company, full mailing address, and miscellaneous information. My only quibbles are 510 contact storage space (sufficient for my purpose, but given the phone's spacious 32 MB internal memory, it should be larger) and first-letter only contact search.
S710a is mainly touted for CCD camera feature. In fact, the phone looks more like camera than phone. Just about every camera phones are equipped with mediocre low-end CMOS camera, which draws less power and occupies less space but takes lousy pictures. S710a is distinguished by CCD camera that dedicated digital cameras typically use. Unfortunately, S710a's camera is not as good as dedicated digital cameras. Even at 1280 by 960 resolution (1.3 mega pixels), photos have fuzzy look to it. Although photos come out far sharper and more colorful than most camera phones, you won't mistake them for dedicated digital camera photos. Also bothersome is bluish cast. It is as if tungsten lighting is permanently engaged. Still, the camera is more than adequate for casual use, and it even includes flash light. The camera is also capable of recording video clips, at maximum of 176 by 144 QCIF resolution.
S710a has an excellent multimedia support, compatible with polyphonic MIDI (40 chords), MP3, WAV, and MPEG-4 AAC audio formats; and MPEG-4 3GPP video format. While it is missing a play list management feature, it includes few nice surprises such as a 5-band graphics equalizer. Video playback is limited to 176 by 144, which is a shame given its gorgeous 240 by 320 screen. S710a includes a decent pair of stereo earphones.
S710a supports Bluetooth 1.1, which is not the latest, but it supports wider range of Bluetooth profiles than most cell phones. It connects very quickly with Bluetooth headsets and syncs and integrates beautifully on Mac. On Mac, it will integrate with Address Book (dial and SMS), sync address book and calendar via iSync, act as a GPRS/EDGE dial-up modem, exchange files wirelessly (music, photos, games, Java applications, and video clips), and can act as a mouse and computer remote control (e.g., controlling PowerPoint/Keynote slide). It works well with Windows XP Service Pack 2 as well, with good file exchange support and syncing with Outlook with included software. Via Bluetooth, I have uploaded 5 games and a Mac OS X Tiger theme that I created with included Theme Creator software. Speaking of themes, wallpaper, screensaver, and ring tones (supports both MIDI and MP3) can be fully customized, too.
All in all, S710a is a very cool phone. It may be a bit large for some and perhaps too expensive. And some may be dismayed by lack of smart phone features. However, the screen is simply stunning, with beautifully rendered user interface, works great with Mac OS X, and it works well as a phone.

Customer Reviews:
Easily the best phone I ever owned........2007-08-25
First of all, I want to let you know that this phone has been EVERYWHERE with me, I've had it for 3 years. Here's why:
1) This phone has everything you need, from writing e-mails to making videos. I can easily stay on track with work e-mails without walking around with a gigantic blackberry. Writing e-mails is a snap, no extra fee's are required. The camera has a 1.3 MP camera with a light (not just a flash) that is rival to the luxor in Las Vegas. With one button you can switch to video mode, and choose where you want to save the vids/pics. This phone also has AIM...awesome. Many games were made for this phone by now and are easily transferable to the phone using bluetooth from your computer (why get online with the phone and mess around with WAP?). Some programs for your computer even alow you to text, call, write notes, etc. through your computer. It's fun and free. The bluetooth technology on this phone is great. There's countless sites to download free games, free themes, apps, etc. This phone has it all, calenders, stopwatch, alarms, mp3 player, video player, music DJ, and countless software to download and use, like a metric converter, first aid guide, and yahoo IM. You can hook up headphones to this thing and rock your way around the streets without having a mas puto bluetooth hanging off your ear. There is also a lock switch that's very unique. It's not an eye sore, you don't have to press buttons to unlock it, all you do is slide the spring-retention switch and you're ready for use. This is much better than most phones because there's NO WAY to accidently call, get online, etc. while it's in your pocket, bag, or car. It's MUCH better than the lock switch on the PSP (which is the SAME switch for the power, dumb).
2) The durability is phenominal. Through the years I've dropped it in a lake in Alaska, threw it at little brothers, used it as an alarm clock in Kenya, Africa, transfered files with people in Europe, and used it as an mp3 player while serving in the Middle East. Sunlight has no effect on this thing and you can leave it in a freezer and still have it work for you.
3) Customize. You can create shortcuts left an right. I push one button and I'm texting buddies. You open the lens cover (how many phones have THAT?) and you're in camera mode, press right and you're in mp3 mode, it's features are countless. I change themes all the time and this phone works just as great as it did when I bought it in 2004.
4) Accessories. This comes with a memory card slot wich is very usefull, internal media memory of 32MB to get you started, a brilliant screen that still pops eyes. The swivel design is creative and helpfull when playing games (ambidex.). So far, nothing has jammed, got deleted automatically, failed to operate randomly, and if all this still doesn't make you think about getting this 3 year- going on 4 year-old phone, ask yourself this: Do I really need a phone the size of a credit card? Believe me, this phone still rivals phones on the market today because it's got everything the new phones have, and more.
Everything you need is on this phone, with NO dissapointments. The only thing that I found that would be nice to have on this phone is iTunes, and a larger memory card capability (currently supports up to 128MB, but some computer geeks found a hombrew around that). That's it! So go find it for sale online or at your AT&T store and save yourself some money with this unique, incredible, fully-functionable phone that will NOT dissapoint you.
Nothing works on this phone.......2007-03-13
The camera is pretty good but the mp3 player only fits about 9 songs on it. The reason I shelled so much out for this phone was to have the phone and mp3 player in one. This phone also drops a lot of calls and I have had problems with sending files via email and actually getting a ring when someone calls.

It Has Potential But the Cons Overshadow the Pros.......2006-07-12
This phone would be great if it did not have so many problems. It has so many cool features, people love my phone, but sometimes I want to throw it out the window. My brother has the same phone and he wants to get rid of it just as much as I do. This is my third s710a and they all had the same problems:
Pros
- Nice big screen.
- 1.3 MP camera, good picture quality in light environments as long as the subjects of the pictures are not moving.
- It plays MP3s.
- It has an external card to connect easily to a computer (transfers pictures and sounds or songs).
- I use my camera flash as a flashlight (it's that bright).
- You can turn off the shutter sound on the updated version of the phones.
Cons
- Holy freakin' slow. I push menu and most of the time it takes 5-10 seconds for the menu to come up. Sometimes (but very rarely) it's instantly.
- Bad picture quality in dark environments (but it's not a real digital camera, so you can't expect it to be).
- You cannot turn speakerphone on until you are already in the call. It just bothers me that I have to wait for someone to answer before I can turn speakerphone on).
- Some software problems (especially the Notes program).
- Menu icons occasionally disappear.
- A number of dropped calls (I hate that).
- People cannot hear me but I can hear them.
- I press call and sometimes it just will not call.
I originally gave this phone 3 stars, but while I was listing the cons, I realized how many problems it has, and that it only deserves 2 stars. The phone would have received 4 or 5 if it was fast and I didn't lose so many calls.
The good, the bad and the ugly.......2006-05-27
I have had this phone for nine months now, and now am hoping to rid myself of it. It is a very nice phone, with many features, and advanced options, yet it just leaves to much to be desired, in my opinion. Firstly, the voice quality that other people hear when i call them is awful. I think the microphone is on the front of the phone, ie that part that touches your face when you hold it at a natural angle. However, the quality has degraded as time has passed. Another problem is that the OS is very slow, and occasionaly requires a reboot. The battery life is iffy, and occasionally, just drops to almost nothing for no reason. Another problem i face is that it drops calls when i dial out of my phone book ~50% of the time. It is like it forgets that i asked it to call, but appears in the call log. And finally, the swivel design. I loved it, and originally bought it in part b/c i like the design a lot, but it is a pain. It takes some skill to do while driving or with one hand. Not bad, but i would like people to be able to hear my over the phone.
