Samsung IP-830 Phone (Sprint)

Amazon.com Product Description

For people who need power and performance wherever they roam, the Samsung IP-830W offers the answer. The 830W world phone uses the Sprint CDMA/EV-DO networks in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and roams on CDMA and/or GSM networks (voice) and GPRS networks (data) outside of North America, making it the ultimate business-class device for mobile professionals.

Into mixing business with pleasure? The 830W has groundbreaking entertainment features. A full color display slides down to reveal an integrated QWERTY keypad, while Bluetooth, and EV-DO wireless broadband keep you on the cutting edge of connectivity. Powered by the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and with support for corporate e-mail accounts, this device is designed for maximum efficiency, wherever you are.

Design
The 830W follows the standard form factor of the latest Pocket PC devices, with one major addition: a sliding QWERTY keyboard is hidden below the screen. A generous, 240 x 320 full-color touch-screen display dominates the face of the unit. Just below the display is a five-way selection button that allows you to navigate and control the Windows Mobile interface. Meanwhile, shortcut buttons offer quick access to your Outlook calendar, contacts, messaging, Internet Explorer, and more. Alternatively, the device can be directly controlled with an included stylus that slides out of the rear of the 830W's case.

Under the hood, the 830W sports a 520 MHz Bulverde Intel processor with 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of embedded flash memory storage. The unit's memory slot supports additional flash-based memory so you can expand for more available storage. The Windows Mobile operating system is completely touch-screen-enabled and features advanced handwriting recognition that is compatible with all of the device's applications. There's a standard stereo 2.5mm headset jack, and USB data and charging is handled by the 830W's docking ports on the bottom of the device. To kick the 830W's audio features up a notch, Samsung has also built a pair of 3D stereo speakers into the unit's case.

Calling Features
Many of the 830W's calling features are integrated with the Windows Mobile operating system. For instance, the included Pocket Outlook software features a contacts list that is cleverly integrated with the phone's dialing functions. Meanwhile, the phone's handwriting recognition software can be used to dial numbers and enter contact information. Speaker-independent voice dialing is integrated, too, meaning the phone recognizes spoken contact names and quickly dials them. The 830W's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and polyphonic ringtones are available, as is a vibrating alert. Caller ID and call waiting are also supported. Lastly, the 830W's Bluetooth connectivity makes it easy to sync the unit with a wide range of hands-free, wireless headsets and car kits.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The 830W is designed as a complete mobile office solution, so Internet and messaging capabilities are robust. The unit comes packed with pocket versions of Outlook, Internet Explorer, and MSN Messenger. In addition to keeping track of contacts, Pocket Outlook features integrated calendar and e-mail functions. Microsoft's ActiveSync software keeps the device synced with all of your PC's Outlook information (via USB, infrared, or Bluetooth connection).

Users who want Internet connectivity on the road with their laptop or PDA can tap into the 830W's wireless modem capabilities. Sprint's next generation EV-DO broadband wireless network is compatible with the unit, meaning you can tap into blistering Internet speeds in areas where EV-DO coverage is provided. Meanwhile, the unit fully supports basic text messaging, as well as multimedia messaging (MMS) (Sprint Power Communication charges apply).

A generous toolset ships with the 830W's Windows Mobile 5.0 software. Pocket Outlook includes to-do lists, and pocket versions of Word and Excel are included so you can review and edit documents on the go. A calculator, an alarm clock for times when you're worried you might sleep-in, and a voice memo recorder round out the tools package.

Entertainment
The 830W delivers the ultimate music experience. You can store digital music files and easily exchange them with your PC or stream them from the Internet. The included Windows Media Player application can also play videos for even more mobile entertainment.

The 830W's wallpapers and screen savers can be customized to suit your tastes. Windows Mobile and Java-based games are also supported. Samsung has even built in a handy application that allows the 830W's infrared port to control your home entertainment equipment.

Vital Statistics
The Samsung IP-830W weighs 6.44 ounces and measures 4.49 x 2.28 x .97 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 2.2 hours of digital talk time and up to 130 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 850/1900 and GSM 900/1800 frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Global Phone.......2007-07-28

I obtained this phone last December when my company changed wireless providers from Verizon to Sprint. Because my job requires me to travel on a global basis, they selected the IP-830 phone for me.

After being a faithful Treo user for years, I was curious to see how the Windows Mobile platform would compare. I've been very pleased with the phone. It's easy to use, fairly intuitive, and is a great travel companion. Because of the Windows Mobile package and the ability to receive email, I am often able to leave my laptop behind for short business trips.

It's global functionality is very simple. Change the band to International and it's good to go. On my first trip overseas with it, I got off the plane in Brussels, turned on my phone and received a text message from Sprint International telling me how to make calls back to the US. Nice job sprint.

The slide down keyboard is nice, although it is not as tight as I would prefer it to be. The screen is easy to use with the stylus and is my preferred method of use. Sound quality is good, not great, but not bad.

My only gripes about the phone are it is a little top heavy and when using the extended life battery. I would recommend you keep both of them fully charged if you are going to use it as much as I use mine. (Probably over 2000 minutes per month, plus over 1500 text messages) Also, don't try to use aftermarket chargers, they simply won't work. I've through three of them and had to come back to the OEM charger. Don't waste your time trying any others.

Text messages are very easy with the onscreen or drop down keyboard. We're in the process of begining to use them as a modem for our laptops, I'll report back on how that goes.

Web brousing is very easy to do, and with the ability to change the screen from portrait to landscape, easy to view websites as they are on an actual computer. It's quite iphone-ish in that sense.

I have yet to find a decent bluetooth headset for the phone that doesn't sound like I'm a thunderstorm or cave.

Overall I think this is terrific phone and if you travel overseas it is the ideal mix of phone and data coverage.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-06-20

While it is a pretty big phone I really don't mind it much because it has so much functionality and I am able to comfortably surf the web and check my web mail and send text messages. The world clock is kinda useless, it doesn't have too many cities listed and I typically don't have it on display. As this has a Microsoft operating system be prepared to reboot about 2x a week on average. Also the VoiceSignal program is really terrible, it never gets my voice command right and is totally useless. Other than that, the sliding keyboard is great and while it's hard to use it with one hand after a while I was able to train myself to do so. The PDF viewer is amazing, very cool application. The battery life is not that great, and the extended battery practically doubles the weight of the phone, so keep a charger with you where you go - of course it was impossible to find a spare charger for this phone and I searched high and low before I found a car charger that was compatible. Overall, its a fun phone and keeps me well connected.

      Amazon.com Product Description

Slim, sleek, and incredibly powerful, the Samsung A900 is the most advanced Sprint phone yet. With a design that is sure to turn heads and powerful features, including support for Sprint's awesome Power Vision high-speed data and media service, a 1.3 megapixel camera, advanced voice recognition, Bluetooth, and more, the A900 can duke it out with the best of them in the contest to be the most powerful phone on the market.

Take a closer look at the A900's functions.

Sleek and powerful: The A900 supports Sprint PCS' amazing Power Vision services.
      Design
While it's true that the A900 takes many design queues from the Motorola RAZR V3, the A900 ups the ante with a 1.3 megapixel camera, a 2.5mm stereo headset jack, 50 MB of internal memory, and support for PictBridge-based direct-to-printer printing (via USB). The A900 also sports a massive 240 x 320 color display with 262,000 colors. The outside cover of the handset features a supplementary 96 x 96 full-color display that can display pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The camera lens is housed above this display and it features a swiveling mechanism that allows it to face in or out. Meanwhile, media control buttons are placed below the outer display. Up/down buttons are placed on the left side for volume control, while most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's backlit control pad. A charging port and USB data cable port are placed on the bottom of the phone.

      Calling Features
The A900's internal phone book can hold up to 500 contacts, and the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures and ringtones to your most common callers. The phone ships with 29 polyphonic ringtones, but for those times when you want to be discreet, there's a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and advanced voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates easy. Simply say the name or number of the person you want to call and the number is dialed automatically without using the keypad. No prior voice training is needed. Lastly, because the A900 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.

      Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The A900 is a messaging powerhouse, with support for Sprint PCS picture and video mail services. Shoot high quality pictures and video clips with sound and instantly send them to email addresses and or other Sprint PCS phones that are compatible with picture and video mail services. Or upload them to the Sprint PCS pictures Web site (sprint.com/picturemail) to create albums. You can also use the A900 to send and receive email, exchange text messages, or join a chat room. Plus, the A900 features an embedded SMS voice messaging client for quickly sending voice messages to other wireless users or any working email addresses.

The real power of the A900 comes alive with Sprint's PCS Power Vision services. Relying on Sprint's new EV-DO high speed data network, Power Vision allows you to enjoy full-color video clips or live TV of the latest news, sports, and entertainment from CNN, Fox, The Weather Channel, and more.

You can also stream or download music to your phone with Sprint's Music Store service. Download stereo-quality, digital tracks instantly to your phone. Choose from hundreds of thousands of full-length songs from virtually every genre. Select songs directly from the phone and listen to them wherever you go. Even download them to your PC.

And last but not least, enhanced 3D games, personalized news and information tickers, and downloadable screen savers and ringtones are also available through the Power Vision service.

Sprint's high speed data network allows you to browse the web like never before while you're on the go. Check out full-color versions of popular web sites or purchase and download premium applications to your Sprint Power Vision Phone. You can also use the included USB cable or Bluetooth to connect to a PC, allowing Internet and email access on your laptop wherever you roam.

The A900 is packed with useful tools to make your life more productive and fun. A message dictation system lets you speak your SMS text messages into the phone, while a customizable favorites menu makes it easy to personalize your phone based on the applications you use most frequently. A voice memo recorder lets you record up to five minutes of spoken voice notes. The phone also includes an alarm clock that can be set one time or daily, a calendar with a to-do list and a scheduler, a calculator, a stopwatch, and a world clock. A PC synchronization application makes it possible to sync your phone's data with your PC.

      Imaging and Entertainment
As mentioned, the A900 features a powerful camera that can be used to capture and send video and still images. The camera also has an LED flash and a self-timer, as well as controls for brightness and white balance. The A900's built-in media player lets you see and hear streaming and stored media, and it supports MP3, AAC, and AAC plus audio files. And where will you put all these pictures, videos and songs? The phone's 50 MB of mass storage does the trick. The phone takes gaming to the next level, too, with support for advanced, action-packed 3D games.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Would be a good phone if the battery lasted.......2007-12-15

I got this phone when it first came out two years ago, I am still using it so it can't be that bad. The functionality of this phone is very good, simple and predictable. I had not owned a samsung phone before this phone, but learned quickly all of the features. I really only use it as a phone nothing more, occasionally have checked sports scores on the web.

The speaker phone speaker sounds pretty poor, but you can still understand the person on the line.

Turning the phone on takes a ridiculous amount of time, with apps loading and moving graphics, which is annoying if you are trying to make a quick call before your battery dies.

Battery life, as other reviewers have mentioned is bad. After the first month of owning the phone I really became frustrated with the battery life. I rarely make or receive calls my main purpose of having a phone is short phone calls and emergencies, so I just want it to work when needed. The battery life would peter out after a day or so without even using the phone. Annoying as the more infrequently you use your cell the more likely it is you will forget to charge it. Many days have I been out and realized the phone was dead or dying.

Aside from the battery I was very happy with the phone, but this annoying issue brings a 4-5 star phone down to 2-3.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Phone. No problems here........2007-12-12

Bottom line - this phone is simple and solid. I've been in remote parts of the country with full reception, even in The Baja of Cali, Mexico - made calls to Pennsylvania flawlessly. Very durable also, dropped it many times on construction sites. Pending you dont use this phone to listen to music and watch tv on it I think you'll find this one of the best phones that Sprint/Samsung partnered on. Buy an ipod to do that. I do agree that the battery life is nothing to brag about - so what, plug it in every night or buy a car charger, big deal. Dealing with short battery life is a far cry from getting your razr replaced every 3 months. This phone was designed to talk on and not to email or text. That's what a Blackberry is for. So if you want something simple, small and solid, this phone is perfect for both the business and leisure traveler. Stop complaining all of you and stop playing with your phones so much.

5 out of 5 stars Not as bad as everone says..........2007-11-30

I happen to think this phone is absolutely wonderful. It is true the battery life is not as good as others, but with frequent text-messaging and 2-3 phone calls a day, i have to recharge about every 2 days...The only thing, when the battery is low, it does warn you, but if you choose to ignore it, the phone just shuts off after a while. The only problem i have with it is the T9 text entry, i use regular alpha-texting, but the t9 puts words in randomly when in alpha mode and it is a little annoying, but not enough to drop a star. Lastly, the durability is extraordinary. I've dropped it soo many times (concrete, asphalt, hard wood floors, on carpet, in a glass of iced tea (haha it slipped out of my hand while in the car and into the cup holder)) and it works as good as it did the first day i got it! Wonderful phone...Highly recommend it!!!

1 out of 5 stars Looks can be deciving - DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE.......2007-09-03

I have owned this phone for about 2 years now. I have had some very horrible experiences with it. I have gone through two of them thus so far.

First off, if you have chosen sprint as a service kick yourself. That was mistake number one. In my experience, sprint has the worst customer service I have encountered. They are difficult to deal with and completely inflexible. The service coverage is awful. In part, it is the phone but it is also sprint. I have traveled to a lot of different places and have experienced spotty coverage with sprint everywhere I have gone. I cannot use the phone in my own house because the service, and phone, is so poor. I am lucky if I can get it to work on my second floor or outside my home.

I could write a few pages on my review of sprint but this review is not supposed to be about that so I will spare you. The phone looks slick and boasts many features. This is probably what tricks many people into getting the phone in the first place. I wish I would have read some of the reviews on here before I did so.

Yes, the phone has music capabilities, to an extent. The hard drive is very small which only allows for about 25 songs to be stored. Moreover, there is no way to set MP3 or any other audio format that you put on to your phone as your ringtone. Instead, you have the option of downloading ringtones at the price of about 3 dollars which only last 90 days on your phone. Because sprint crippled the music capabilities of this phone, they have rendered them completely useless and therefore, I never use them.

To be blunt, the battery life of this phone sucks; especially, if you frequently use your phone. I have to charge mine about every 12 hours. The only positive is that it charges pretty quickly. The worst part is that my phone usually does not tell me it has a low battery until the middle of a phone conversation. This becomes a problem when the phone gives a double beep that interrupts the conversation and blocks out incoming and outgoing audio. This occurs about every 30 seconds. This is the worst feature of the phone in my opinion.

This phone has extremely buggy software. I have gone through two of these phones. The first phone I purchased had a lot of software problems. It dropped calls on a regular basis in my hometown. However, I did not have it very long in my hometown before I moved to Columbus Ohio. The call dropping resolved itself until I went back to my hometown. My friend has sprint and did not have the same problems I did. I determined it was the phone itself. I took it into sprint and explained the problem but I was forced to pay $60 for a technician to inspect my phone only to find out that it indeed was a software issue and the phone needed to be replaced. Therefore, the problem had nothing to do with anything I might have done to the phone but I was still forced to pay $60 to get a new one. My new phone was a little better but still very buggy. The reception slightly improved but the phone still dropped many calls.

The cell phone ringer is extremely quiet and the vibrator very weak. Often times, I miss calls when the phone is only in my pocket.

The phone can play videos, access the internet, play movies, and lot of other features that supposedly empower the user. But be wary! Just know that most of these features require an additional monthly charge that is far too expensive and of course, the sales representative will fail to mention any of that.

5 out of 5 stars this phone DOES have battery life.......2007-05-02

this phone is AWESOME, i've had it over a year and it works very well and is EXTREMELY durable. the outside shell is metal which gives it a nice weight but also protects it when you drop it, which i've done a hundred times.

the main problem people are having, obviously, is battery life. i had that problem too...but not anymore. go into the menu, then settings, then others, and then TURN OFF the LOCATION feature...this allow's your phone's gps to only work for emergency purposes/services (like police or w/e). This exponentially increases battery life and in standby...my phone lasts almost 2 days. That is how you increase battery life and turn this phone into a great one.

      Calling Features
The A920's internal phone book can hold up to 500 contacts, and the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures and ringtones to your most common callers. The A920's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911 (where available). And lastly, because the A920 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best phone i've ever had.......2007-10-02

I've paid a lot of money for phone in my life. I have probably gone through ten in my life. But NO PHONE is as good as this one. It is the BEST phone in the WORLD. Every time someone comes over to me and is like "check out my new phone" I make sure to remind them that my phone came out like two years ago and it is MUCH better then yours.

      4 out of 5 stars excellent phone.......2007-04-14

I have had this phone for a year now, a great phone, the mp3 player is good too. the only real complaint I have is the delay in taking a picture with the camera, it is not instant, you have to hold the phone steady for about 3-5 seconds, this is fine for most pics but for taking pics of my kids, they dont hold still long enough

3 out of 5 stars Good phone with some cons.......2007-03-27

      PROS:
-plays mp3s, takes pics, phone all-in-one thus eliminating the need for these items separately, which is why i got it.
      -on-board software seems fine.
      -stereo speakers actually work well.

      CONS:
-pic quality is of that of your average cell phone (so-so). Pic-taking is not synched properly with the shutter sound for some odd reason. For some reason, some of my pics haven't saved...
-cannnot transfer mp3s/files to/from computer or with any 3rd-party data cable; uses a transflash (t-flash) MicroSD card so you'll need to shell out more cash for a decent 1gb or 2gb MicroSD card plus a USB card reader.
-since you can't connect the phone directly via USB (again, remember - you have to use the SD card), there is no easy way to transfer contacts from old phone to this one or this one to the next.
-supplied earbuds fall out of my ears every 5 seconds. 1 side of the wired earbud cable is noticably much longer for some reason. This looks and is MORONIC. Don't have any idea whatsoever what they did this for.
-supplied battery life is DEPLORABLE. you'll simply need to buy the extended battery which is more money down the drain, plus the extended battery is much physically larger and extendeds outward making the phone look odd.
      -no supplied car charger

In the end, it's still a decent phone, and there aren't (or at least weren't) a lot of solutions for cam/mp3/phone combos out there at the time I got it. For example, I still don't think you can get the latest in vogue RAZR with an mp3 player and I simply won't put up with a phone that doesn't have an mp3 player option anymore. It's a widely used audio format that requires little technology or physical board space to incorporate into a phone.

3 out of 5 stars All sizzle and very little steak........2006-12-03

They advertise this as a multimedia phone, but at the rate it devours batteries, you'll want to think twice about using it as both a phone and MP3 player. I can't even imagine the batteries it would consume as a video player.
The camera is decent (not great) and as others have noted, it seems to actually take the picture a second or so later than the phone indicates. That's not a big deal, once you understand it. But still? How difficult would it have been to sync the shutter sound to when the shutter actually operates?

The most frustrating thing about this package is the 'data cable'. Apparently, this allows the phone to function as a modem. (At an additional subscription fee.) It will not allow you to transfer files back and forth between the phone and your computer. For this you need to use the transflash card. The procedure is to remove the microcard, insert it into the bigger card, then put that into your computer's card reader. Not a big deal. But again, how hard would it have been to engineer the phone to do this through the 'data cable'?

Personalized ringtones? You can rent them from Sprint, or you can use a 3rd party web service (You will pay for text and data transmission). You cannot install them from the data cable or the memory card. Forget about it - it's simply not permitted.

      The good:
Attractively styled. The screen is bright and easy to read.
      The so-so:
      Reception. Camera.
      The annoying:
Most of the extra features are designed for Sprint to shake some more money out of your pockets - Customer convenience does not seem to be a factor in Samsung/Sprint's design concept.

3 out of 5 stars Good looks and screen.......2006-10-25

I bought this phone in exchange of my sanyo 8400.
There are few drawbacks.I am switching back to sanyo.
      Pros:
      1.Looks are very good.
2.The screen has very high resolution.Images are crisp and sharp.
3.The camera fun features are nice.
      4.Media player is good.
      Cons:
1.YOU CANNOT TRANSFER MUSIC TO YOUR PHONE WITHOUT BUYING A CARD READER/WRITER.Buy a card reader/writer for 10$ more.
2.The phone cannot be hooked to your PC except for going online.Which means ,except for the modem functionality your PC will not identify your phone nor can you do the data transfer between your phone and your PC.Yuk.
3.Reception is average. This phone does not have signal where my other phone had signal.
