Motorola Q Black Phone (Verizon Wireless)

Amazon.com Hands-On Review

To keep your smartphone's applications up to date, and to optimize the performance of your device, you may need to perform firmware and/or software updates just as you would on your PC. Motorola's QWERTY keyboard equipped Q, formerly known as the RAZRberry in the rumor mills, might not exactly be the "BlackBerry killer" that many predicted, but it is certainly one of the most capable and user friendly smartphones available on the market today.

Based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone platform, the Q picks up the best features from Microsoft's Smartphone edition of Windows Mobile while still offering a lot of PDA-like capability and screen real estate on its 65k color, 320x240 pixel display.

Sleek, small and oh, so powerful.

In terms of hardware features, the Q's right side 3-way scroll wheel and dedicated back buttons take center stage. These give the Q user fast BlackBerry-like scrolling with the ability to select an item or return to the prior screen--all with the user's thumb. Of course you can still do these same things the traditional way by using the 5-way direction pad and the back button that sits to its right. There's also a dedicated home key as well as the red and green call control keys.

The Q's QWERTY keyboard is a bit stiff, but otherwise designed well. The dark keys serve double duty as the numeric keypad when the Option key (found left of the Z key) is used. The Option key can be locked on, as can the shift key on the opposite side of the keyboard. Along the bottom of the keyboard you'll find dedicated buttons for email, the 1.3-megapixel camera, and a dual-use key for the speaker-independent voice dialing system and speakerphone.

When it comes to hot features, though, the Q's EV-DO 3G data capability tops the list. When used in an EV-DO coverage area, the Q user can expect to get wireless data rates that approach those enjoyed by home DSL users. When there is no EV-DO coverage available, the Q will fall back to the slower 1xRTT data network (roughly comparable to a 56Kbps modem). The Q can also connect to a desktop PC with a USB or Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth can also be used with mono and stereo headsets, as well as other devices like keyboards.

Get intimate with the Q's keyboard (silver version shown).

While WiFi wireless access would have been a welcomed feature, it would have only led to even more strain on the already overtaxed battery. The standard capacity battery is capable of a respectable 5.5 hours of continuous talk time, but realistically will only provide a day of solid use, especially if the Q user takes advantage of the BlackBerry-like push email support. The push system can keep your Q lock step in sync with your corporate or home email inbox without any user intervention required. On top of email synchronization, it can also be used to synchronize the Q's contacts, calendar entries, tasks and other items with your home or office copy of Microsoft Outlook. It is somewhat eerie how you can enter a new contact or appointment on the Q and have it show up moments later in Outlook--or the other way around.

One of the great things about owning a smartphone is the ability to add 3rd party developed applications to the device. Since Windows Mobile 5.0 is quite popular, there are plenty such applications available both freely and for purchase. The Q has about 50MB of RAM for running applications, and a similar amount for storing data and the applications themselves. If you need more storage space, you can easily add a gigabyte or two by inserting a miniSD memory card into the Q's slot, located on the left edge of the device.

The Motorola Q packs a lot of capability into a device that is only a half inch thick and weighs 4.3 ounces--considerably less than the competition. It comes highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Q GOOOOOOOD.......2007-12-27

I've had my Q for about 2 months now.
Positives:
I love its user interface and sleek design. Mine has been very stable. I've had a couple PDAs and of course cell phones so what was especially sweet was when I first got it sync'd up with Outlook and ALL my contacts with their phone numbers were immediately available for quick dialing. Welcome to the 'smartphone' world. AWESOME. :-)

I regularly text message as well as manage 3 different emailboxes including one that syncs with a hosted Exchange Server (service provided by AppRiver). This is great because when I am on my laptop and I create a calendar appointment, it automatically is enterred in my phone's calendar (no wires required). Likewise, when I respond to an email from my phone, it is in my sent folder when I get on my laptop.

I just starting using motorolla's Blue Tooth T700. Pretty good hands free voice recongizion for dialing.

Negatives:
1. Battery life. When they gave me an extra free one I figured this might be an issue. I have it on all day, checking 3 mailboxes every 15 minutes and I get a little more than 1 day per battery. So I pretty much keep on battery in the charger and swap them out when I need to. This is less of a problem if I let it charge up in the car on the way to work or at my desk. That's the price to pay for such a large screen, blue tooth, and the cell service. I am sure an aftermarket batter would hold it's charge longer. Plus I think there are some powersaving settings you can config that will help this. I just haven't taken the time to investigate that piece.

2. This next item is very nit-picky but hey, maybe someone from Motorola will read this... The "," and "." and "'" buttons throw me. It is more intuitive for me to have a comma and a period share the same button than a period and apostrophe. 2 months and still get it wrong more than I would like to admit. So hey Motorola, next time please swap the "'" and the "," so the comma is on the same button as the period.

Overall, it's been a great phone. Thin, light, sturdy, and dependable. No freeze ups. I've even dropped it a few times.

2 out of 5 stars Bad Battery Life / Terrible Sync.......2007-12-25

The Q looks like it might be a Blackberry replacement. It's not:
-It is more difficult to type on the Q
-The battery life (please see other reviews which will really go into depth on this) is terrible
-Sometimes the syncing software (I am pretty good with computers) works and sometimes it doesn't. This may be a Vista issue as I am running Vista.

1 out of 5 stars Stay Away From the Q!.......2007-09-12

The Q is a frustrating waste of time and money. I have also experienced many of the problems described in the other customer reviews: random crashes, slow service, non-existant battery life, etc.

Do yourself a favor and get an iPhone or, if you need a device for business, a Blackberry. Compared to the Q, both are much better and more reliable alternatives.

2 out of 5 stars This phone is really slow and poorly thought out........2007-07-17

This phone is a poor replacement for my Blackberry. It's very slow, it's very buggy (including multiple random crashes for no reason), and the operating system seems like an early draft. There are few features with make the phone easy to use. You can't even change the font for reading email. I really wish I could send it back and get another Blackberry.

I bought it because I thought Windows mobile would be "seamless" with my desktop. It's okay, but it's no better than a Blackberry. In fact, consumers should beware that Windows Mobile Smart Phone is not Windows Mobile - it doesn't include Word or any of the other applications which I thought it would include when I bought it.

This was the first Motorola since I quit them "for good" a year ago. I think I'm going to buy iPhones for the next 10 years.

1 out of 5 stars Excited to get it NOT sad to see it go!!!.......2007-07-12

I wanted this phone for a year but I was under contract and didn't want to pay full price so I waited. When I was eligable for my 'new every two'promotion, with Verizon, I ordered this phone. I read all about its short comings on the internet but figured I'd give it a chance. Well my love affair lasted about 1 week. The phone has a lot of very cool features but they don't always work and you have to use the 'kill' feature everytime you are done with them. Even when you just simply make a call you go into your contacts and make your call you then have to go and 'kill' the contacts funtion. This gets old fast and if you forget to do it you battery dies in a few hours. I was real good about 'killing' all of the phones apps but it still drained the battery. I didn't even have the data package and my phone battery had a very short life. The final straw was the last day when I fully charged the phone, 'killed' all the apps, locked the keypad and set my phone on my desk at work. Four hours later the battery was dead. This wasn't the first time and I couldn't take it anymore. I retuned it the next day. Thank god for the 30 day trial period. Until this phone gets a new operating system it will always be horible. I now own the Treo 700p and this phone is awesome. Save your money and your sanity. The reason this phone is 'Priced to move' is because it is horrible. Don't believe the people that give this phone a good rating they probably work for Motorola. Even the nice woman at the Verizon store said she returned her Q not long after she got it. She told me it is the most returned item at her store. The Treo 700p she says almost never gets returned. Consider the Treo and not the 700w, same operating system as the Q. 700p all the way!!!

1 out of 5 stars Pitiful power.......2007-12-25

The Q has great functionality and a very well designed keyboard, but every single positive attribute of this device is far - far! - overshadowed by the unbelievably bad battery performance. I've had two Q's - including a brand-new replacement - and neither can handle even a full business day of even moderate usage. If you buy the extended-life battery, the Q is no longer slim and thus loses one of its chief benefits. Overall, I'd say this is one of the worst consumer electronics products that I have ever purchased. I've yet to find anyone who is happy with their Q. I've also used Blackberry World Phone, which after two days of usage made me aware of just how bad the Q is.

1 out of 5 stars Black Screen of Death.......2007-11-05

I will be reluctantly getting my 3rd Q (replacement). I've only had this 2nd one for maybe 2 months. It would freeze constantly during the past 2 months forcing me to remove the battery for a restart. Now I have the dreaded Black Screen of Death with "motorola flash mode bootloader version: boot_c_03.08.00R_MPAP". Anytime bloggers start naming how your phone dies its a very bad sign!

1 out of 5 stars multiple problems with basic service.......2007-10-15

I have owned the Q since August, 2006. I wish I'd bought a Blackberry. The Q has very good reception. The email reception is great - until it freezes up with an "Error" message, which happens weekly. I then lose email access. It's not a good sign when you have the phone HELP number tatooed to your wrist! The IT guy at work has asked me to get rid of it. I need a phone and I need to receive work email at any time. The Q is unreliable for email, and that just doesn't make the grade, no matter how many other features it has.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite up to par..........2007-09-20

The Q is a good phone for just talking. It gets the job done as far as being able to get online and for that reason, I have stuck with it. However, sometimes when I am composing an email to someone, Mr. Q gets his own ideas for what the text should say. I'll be typing and either the predictive text will get a little too predictive (e.g. I want to say, "I'm going to the show" and without me even choosing to say it, he will type "I'm going to the shootout." Now that is not what I wanted to say!). OR he will decide that there should be a ppp in the email right after what I'm typing and then every time I click "done" and return to the email he has inserted another ppp till the email says, "ppppI'm going to the shootoutppp" - obviously I have a problem with that!
And sometimes I cannot highlight on a webpage the button I want to select.
Sometimes the phone just freezes up and I have to restart.
The big doozie was the phone completely locking up, saying "not enough disk space!" and it had lost all of my pics, contacts and calendar dates! In the store there was another man returning his Q for another and he said it was his fifth Q!!! Scary...
But generally, when it comes down to it, this phone gets the job done. I as a woman with small hands am able to click the little keys, I have learned how to navigate, the calendar is well-laid out in my opinion, the phone quality is good, the speakerphone is great, etc.
So I will be keeping this phone until the two years ends. Yikes. Two years?! Let's hope by then the iPhone is incredibly affordable and awesome!

1 out of 5 stars Stay away!!!.......2007-09-04

Wow, I normally would not write a review on a cell phone, but the Motorola Q is so poorly designed and flawed that I can not hold back. I truly do not understand how Motorola could put out such a product with clean consciences! It is obvious that there were known flaws when distributed because there are so many different versions of error messages that they (and Microsoft) inserted throughout the software.
The following are major problems with this phone. I won't mention the less major issues. Battery life is incredibly bad. With the extended life battery, the phone will not last through a workday (with minimal use). It locks up constantly, requiring you to remove the battery to reboot. It often can not make a phone call from the contact list or call history list, usually giving a bogus error about not having a signal or, the simple "Operation Error". It doesnt change time when passing through time zones and, (this is important for my work) the Windows media player will not open wav files.
As soon as I can, I am going to a Palm Treo 760 (Palm OS, NOT Windows).

Motorola RAZR V3c Pink Phone (Verizon Wireless)

Amazon.com Hands-On Review

While Motorola's RAZR V3 was tearing up the marketplace worldwide, people on Verizon's network were left asking "What about us?" Then we saw a CDMA RAZR show up in Korea and Verizon users felt hope--and eventually were offered the RAZR V3c. But then the magenta-colored "pink" RAZR V3 hit the shelves in T-Mobile stores, and once again Verizon customers were left wanting more.

And now they have it--in the form of the pink Motorola RAZR V3c. Functionally the same as the gray V3c, the new version has a pink color that is, well, more "pink" than the model offered by T-Mobile. In fact, it is really quite attractive, even to my decidedly male brain.

Learn more about the pink RAZR V3c from Verizon Wireless.

The V3c has 30 MB of internal storage and a run-of-the-mill 1.3-megapixel camera that takes photos that are just "okay", but not great. That megapixel camera, different from the one in the new V3i, is the reason for the small bulge in the shape of the RAZR V3c near the hinge. This brings the total handset thickness to 5/8 of an inch (about 16mm). The weight still comes in at 3.4 ounces (97g), or about the same as the original V3.

The V3c's internal antenna does a good job of finding and holding onto a signal--at least as well as Motorola's own V710 did with its extendable whip antenna. The audio quality was pretty good for a Verizon phone, and the battery life was about average for an EV-DO 3G handset at 3.25 hours of continuous talk time. That EV-DO capability means that the V3c is compatible with Verizon's V CAST video service, which offers video clips from the likes of CNN and MTV, as well as a host of others. Bluetooth support is also on board, but only for headset use. You cannot use it to send and receive photos, for example, though photos can be sent via e-mail or uploaded to the Verizon PixPlace Web site. Verizon has promised that it will start to allow its EV-DO handset subscribers to use their phones as EV-DO modems, but you will need an extended data plan (not just V CAST) in order to do so.

Like most new Verizon phones, the RAZR V3c uses Verizon's standard user interface. This means that the menu system on the V3c is almost the exact same as the one found on LG's VX8000 and VX8100 phones or Samsung's SCH-a950. While I'm not a fan of the system, it is reasonable to use and will make the V3c an easy upgrade for most people already using a Verizon handset.

Other points of interest include a nice speakerphone and a very good speaker-independent voice command system. The system allows you to call a particular phone number for one of your contacts just by speaking a single command to the phone. For example, you just press the voice dial button and say "call John Doe home" or "Call John Doe mobile" to start the call. You can also use the same system to start a text message, digit dial (eg. 215-555-1212), or look up a contact record ("lookup John Doe"). The system works over the speakerphone or with a Bluetooth headset as well.

Click the image to see the V3c's keyboard up close.

Pros:

  • Thin and sexy
  • EV-DO data, V CAST support
  • Bluetooth
  • Cons:

  • Keypad not great for fast texting
  • Mediocre camera
  • Could use more battery life
  • Overall, the pink RAZR V3c from Motorola is a very capable and easy to love phone. It has striking good looks and design and a rock solid feature set that includes 3G data, Bluetooth, and a large 262k color display. While you might want more battery life and a better quality camera, the RAZR V3c is still likely to make you happy - and get you noticed.

    Amazon.com Product Description

You've probably seen the wildly popular Motorola RAZR V3 in someone's hand before. Now Verizon has their own version of the RAZR, the RAZR V3c. The sexy design is here, as is the all-metal construction. This time, though, the phone is more powerful than ever, boasting support for Verizon's exclusive V Cast mobile content service, which is powered by EV-DO high-speed data technology. The V3c also features a 1.3 megapixel camera, upping the ante in the picture-taking department. Verizon is now offering the RAZR V3c in a stunning pink color. That's right, pink! It's time to live a little.

Learn more about the pink RAZR V3c from Verizon Wireless.
    Design
At .6 inches thick, the RAZR V3c is just slightly thicker than the original RAZR. The RAZR V3c's design takes the standard clamshell form factor to the next level with an impressive, fully-anodized aluminum construction. A large 176 x 220 color display with 65,000 colors dominates the inside of the top cover. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 80 full-color display that can display caller ID pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The 1.3 megapixel camera lens is housed above this display. Up/down buttons are placed on the left side for volume control. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's backlit control pad, which is precision cut from a single sheet of nickel-plated copper alloy. A charging port and USB data cable port is placed on the bottom of the phone. The RAZR V3c also features 30 MB of embedded memory for storing pictures, videos and downloaded V Cast content. Note that the phone does not have a 2.5mm headset jack.

    Calling Features
The RAZR V3c's internal phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts while the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. It also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone and more ringtones can be downloaded from Verizon Wireless' Get It Now service. For times when you want to be discreet, there's a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear while voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. Speaker-independent technology allows any speaker to dial numbers with the voice dialing system. And because the RAZR V3c is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.

    Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The RAZR V3c is a messaging and wireless Internet powerhouse. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in web browser for Verizon Mobile Web downloads and mobile web browsing. Verizon's optional Mobile Web package allows you to read and send e-mails and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, the RAZR V3c is fully compatible with Verizon's V Cast service. With V Cast, you can download and stream high-quality video. Need news and weather? Get the latest Accuweather forecast delivered right to your handset, or stream CNN news headlines. ESPN sports updates, entertainment news from E!, and even Sesame Street content for the kids, are all available. V Cast also serves as a portal for enhanced 3D games, allowing you to have more fun with a new breed of realistic titles.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the RAZR V3c including a voice memo recorder, a calculator with currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock. The phone supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard, which can be used with Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools PC application to manage and synchronize contacts, calendar and other data with your PC.

    Imaging and Entertainment
The RAZR V3c's 1.3 megapixel camera bridges the gap between phones and quality digital cameras. The camera is also designed to capture video, and there are night and self-timer functions. Embedded animated screensavers and full screen wallpapers are built-in so you can set up the RAZR V3c to suit your tastes. The RAZR V3c supports V Cast 3D games, as well as other 2D-based games, which are available from Verizon's Get It Now service.

    1 out of 5 stars THUMBS DOWN.......2007-06-19

PROS: It's "pink", my favorite color!

CONS: Where should I begin.......the speaker phone DOES NOT work. I can hear them but they can't hear me, even if I speak right into the mic. Takes terrible pictures! Battery life is awful. The worst cell phone I had when it comes to battery life. The keys are very touchy. When I go to shut it off, it dials a 3 which goes into my speed dial (3 button right under my shut off button). You can never be in a hurry using this phone....................

4 out of 5 stars Overall great phone, but has a few problems..........2007-05-14

I'm a student whose parents surprised me with this phone, which I really love! However, despite its uber awesomeness, it has a few problems. If you text a lot, you might want to consider looking elsewhere, because the keys (what do you call them - keys? buttons?) on this phone will KILL your nails and the tips of your fingers! Your nails will be sore for a long time afterwards. But I'm not a regular texter, so I don't have issues with this.

Also, the ringtones are lame. Like, really lame. There isn't even a normal, "classic", ringing ringtone, which really bugs my mom (who owns the silver RAZR), because she hates the cutesy ringtones. But I like to buy a few of my own ringtones anyway, so this doesn't bother me too much.

The only other problem that I've picked up on is the short battery life. I can't tell you how many times I've had to cut short a conversation with someone because my phone is dying. That said, it does charge up again super fast. The car charger especially is great - you have to buy the car charger!

Overall, it's one sweet phone and I love it - just make sure you're aware of the above potential annoyances before you sink $$$ into a purchase like this. Knowing what I know now, I would still buy this exact phone again if anything happened to the one I own now - I can't resist shiny pink things!

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE.......2007-01-27

I have had to exchange my Pink Verizon Motorola Razr 3 times!!!!!! Luckily I purchased the insurance.... I'm going back tomorrow for my 4th phone in 1 yr (this last phone only lasted a few weeks!)... This time I am asking for different phone. The phone works fine then all of sudden one day, 1/2 the buttons stop working and then when you flip the phone open the "#" is on the screen and you can't get to anything.... No phone numbers, no voicemail, no text messages, nothing!!!! It is extremely frustrating. What is the point of a cute phone that doesn't work.

    1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2007-01-24

i hate this phone. i moved to miami and cannot get reception anywhere. it cuts me off the minute i enter any building so i am stuck standing outside to talk. i had to get a land line for the first time in over 5 years because i cannot use it in my apartment, so i am wasting tons of money on a land line with overpriced long distance rates. but here's the thing: other people on verizon using a different brand phone like LG have absolutely no problem! they actually get a couple bars of reception, whereas i always have one or none at all. i returned the phone and all they could do was give me another just like it... with all the same problems. i actually had over 30 dropped calls in one month. i am now stuck with it for the next 2 years unless i want to purchase another one for full price. on top of that, people are right when they say the battery life is ridiculous. unless you never talk on it, the battery wears out in a hurry. and the volume buttons on the side are very hard to use when talking. i usually end up putting it on speaker phone by accident. i am trying to decide which is the lesser of two evils.. chucking this one in the drawer and purchasing a different one, or wasting money on a land line. whatever you do, don't get suckered in by it's cute pink color, because underneath it's pretty exterior it's junk!

4 out of 5 stars Good phone, but..........2006-12-17

But it does have some faults. I have had it for some time now, I got it for my 11th birthday. I have reviewed the cingular version too, even though mines verizon.

    FAULTS:
Very short battery life - I have to charge it almost every day!
Camera - The picture you take can't move or it comes out all messed up.

    GOOD PARTS:
Big screen - Easy to read!
Recording videos - Even though you get 15 seconds, I still use that to make funny videos with my friends.
It's style - I love the color and style! My friends are all jealous.

    Overall, I think it's a great phone.

4 out of 5 stars Cheap but nice extention of battery life........2007-03-24

The battery is great and does extend the charge life of the phone admirably if you can put up with the extra bulk (though probably not as much as you'd expect). Please note that the new battery door is plastic and not aluminum like the rest of the phone. So it looks a little cheap. This wasn't a problem for me since I put my phone in a case anyway which covers the door.

4 out of 5 stars Cute, but tight.......2007-11-19

I bought this for my pink Verizon Wireless RAZR phone, which is a tad thicker than RAZRs from other companies. It was very very tight, and took a bit for me to get my phone out of it. However, being leather, it did stretch out some, and became easier to get my phone out of after time.

    1 out of 5 stars doesn't cover outside screen!.......2006-12-05

TERRIBLE! Do not believe the picture that shows the outside screen encased in plastic, there is a HUGE HOLE AROUND THE SCREEN! Naturally, the only reason you would need a case at all for an aluminum phone is to protect the screen, and it doesn't even do that! so what is the point!?? Duh, aluminum is stronger than plastic so why are all these crazy people buying these and giving them great reviews just because it protects the aluminum part?? These cases don't protect the screen or camera lens whatsoever, which are the only friggin things that needs protecting!? bah I hate people. Hopefully this review will keep others from making the same mistake I did, not to mention that the shipping charge is more than 10 times what the case even costs.

4 out of 5 stars Good for V3 but only ok for V3i.......2006-11-11

Great price, fits tight but I have a V3i razr so the little the motorola symbol didn't line up perfect on my phone the charger slot was slightly covered by the case also. I filed it down a little and it worked, but for 2 bucks plus shipping still a good buy. I have friend that has a black razr and it fits fine.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect fit.......2006-04-01

This clamshell is nutz! Got one for my wife and she just loves it!Makes your phone look like it came out of a "TRON" movie.
It gives your RAZR a cool "Swatch phone" look (if you remember those).
The application is simple and it definitely protects your phone from scratches.
I only which they would make one with a clip. :)
