It's the latest version of Palm's wildly popular Treo series of Smartphones. Everything that's great about the Treo hardware is here, plus all the power of Windows Mobile 5.0.

The Treo 700wx: An office in your pocket. See it in detail. You can also See it in 3D.

Search the Web from the Today Screen.

With the Treo 700wx, you can experience broadband-like download speeds using Sprint's EV-DO technology. Simply put, everything you need to do your work on the move, and at blazing speeds, has arrived.

Design
Under the hood, the Treo 700wx features 128MB of RAM (60MB available for end user storage) and an Intel XScale 312MHz processor. The design retains the same basic form factor as the Treo 650 with a few changes. Aesthetically, the new Treo has more angular lines and a more professional-looking gray color. At 6 ounces, it's also slightly lighter than its predecessor. The button layout above the full QWERTY keyboard has been changed to accommodate the Windows Mobile 5.0 interface, and the screen sports 240 x 240 resolution.

Like the Treo 650, the top of the 700wx features an expansion card slot for SD, SDIO, and MMC memory and expansion cards, and get this: Unlike the 650, the 700wx supports the Palm Wi-Fi card. Up top there's also an infrared port for line of sight data transfers, as well as a handy switch for turning off the phone's ringer. Below the screen, a five-way navigator controls most of the phone's menus and operating system functions. The left side of the unit features a volume up/down toggle plus a handy user-customizable button that can be assigned to any phone or PDA function. The rear of the unit houses a loudspeaker, as well as the 1.3 megapixel camera unit. A touchscreen stylus can be tucked away on the right side of the phone. Meanwhile, a combined charging, data, and accessory attachment port, called the Palm "multi-connector" is housed on the bottom of the unit, as is a standard 2.5 mm stereo headset jack.

Calling and PDA Features
Like the Treo 650, the Treo 700wx's phone and PDA functions are designed to provide an integrated, seamless experience--only this time it's all handled by Windows Mobile software. The hallmark of the Windows Mobile experience is the "Today" screen that summarizes all the important information you need to make it through the day. Here you'll get message notification, upcoming appointments, dialing functions, and a Google Web searching all in one spot.

As a phone, the Treo 700wx features all the functionality folks expect from a handset, including a handsfree speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones (polyphonic MIDI, MP3, WAV and video ringtones are supported), a vibrate mode, and picture caller ID. Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile combines email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes into a single application that seamlessly integrates with the 700wx's phone functions. Meanwhile, headsets, car kits and other wireless peripherals can also be paired with the unit via Bluetooth (the Bluetooth 1.2 specification is supported).

Staying productive on the road is made possible by the Microsoft Office Mobile suite, which includes Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile. You also get Picsel PDF Viewer for viewing PDF document attachments, and the File Explorer application makes it easy to browse the files on your 700wx.

Messaging and Internet
The really big news about the 700wx is that it supports Sprint's EVDO mobile broadband service, allowing you to get DSL speeds wherever you have broadband data coverage. And what can you do with all that speed? Surf the Web faster than ever before using the bundled Internet Explorer application, or log into Pocket MSN and check your Hotmail, use MSN Messenger, or browse the MSN Mobile portal. Robust SMS and MMS functionality is built into the Windows Mobile interface, too.

One of the most important tools bundled with the 700wx is Microsoft ActiveSync, which allows you to quickly synchronize your device's tasks, calendars, email, and contacts with your desktop. You also get Exchange ActiveSync, an application that lets you synchronize data with an Exchange server. Syncing can be done via USB, or wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Imaging and Entertainment
Another great feature of the 700wx is that it supports Windows Media playback right out of the box. With Windows Media Player 10, Palm users can finally play streaming and downloaded video and audio content in a variety of formats, even purchased music from "Plays For Sure" supporting stores. You can also keep your tunes loaded on a memory card and listen to stereo sound wherever you roam (requires an optional stereo headset adapter).

The Treo 700wx's built-in camera sees a bump in performance with the ability to take 1.3 megapixel (1280 x 1024) stills. The camera also features a 2x digital zoom, a self portrait mirror, and automatic light balancing. While the camera is great for taking stills, it can also function as a camcorder, allowing you to capture MPEG4 video to the unit's memory. An integrated media application organizes your captured photos and videos.

And last, but certainly not least, the Treo 700wx keeps the fun going when you've got some downtime with great games. Bubble Breaker and Solitaire ship with the handset, but more Windows Mobile games are available.

Vital Statistics
The Palm Treo 700wx weighs 6.0 ounces and measures 4.40 x 2.30 x .90 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 360 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 850/1900 frequencies, as well as the EV-DO and 1xRTT data frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this.......2007-12-13

Bought it for Real Estate purposes. Not functional. Not practical. Just not good. Crashes constantly and email does not work well.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the 755P!.......2007-11-01

After owning the TREO 650 for two years it was time to upgrade. I've always been interested in trying out the Smart Phones with the MS OS because I figured it provided more capabilities for a business person on the road, such as being able to retrieve e-mails and organize files more easily on the fly. I was wrong. I can understand that people may have their preferences with either the MS or Palm platforms, for me the MS (TREO 700WX) was to hard to navigate with one hand and the multiple open windows can be confusing. Also what I did not know is that I could not use the Tomtom software that I had been using on my TREO 650 because of incompatability issues. To me the phone was worthless. I took it back and got the TREO 755P. Palm keeps it simples and the enhance web capability over the TREO 650 made it much easier and faster to access web pages. Also they have improved Versamail so it is easier and faster to recieve e-mails. So I had strayed from the trusty Palm application once, but never again. Bottom line, the TREO 755P can do everything the TREO 700WX can and more. Stick with Palm

2 out of 5 stars too many duds.......2007-10-31

Like a lot of people probably did, I ignored everyone I knew who told me that this phone has a lot of problems. Mine was no exception. I've had it for less than a year and have had every possible problem with it including multiple freezings, random screens that pop up hundreds of times/day, active sync not working, etc. The only thing I do love is the keyboard and ease of reading the screen. It is a bit bulkier than I would want also. As soon as I can find a well reviewed smartphone, I'm throwing this one in the trash!!

4 out of 5 stars Expanded usage.......2007-10-22

I originally bought this phone because I wanted to combine my cell phone and my PDA, and it can use a 2GB SD card. I store a whole medical library on the storage card, and it is easily accessible, accesses files quickly. Sometimes the print runs off the side to the right without a way to get to it. Changing the size of the font sometimes works, but not always. The other PDA functions, such as contacts, calendar, etc., work great and synchronize easily. I also use Pocket Quicken, and it runs well, and syncs quickly with Quicken on the PC.

Locking the keyboard when the phone is off is a must, and disabling the touchscreen is also necessary when talking on the phone. I also get better reception than my daughter, who has a new cell phone, using the same service (Sprint). Altogether, I'm sure I will buy another Treo when new ones come out.

3 out of 5 stars Miss My Blackberry.......2007-10-11

I wish I had never let go of my Blackberry. I think the Treo is ok for calls (kinda), and syncing with my computer, but not much else.

I frequently receive pdf files from co-workers and clients, and I couldn't review them on my BlackBerry. I can download them on my Treo, but can't actually READ them. It shows the full document on the screen. The screen is great- but not for reading a pdf- you can't "zoom" in. Reviewing an 8.5 x 11 inch document on a 2 inch screen is impossible.

It is not as user-friendly as my BlackBerry was. It was much easier to find and change preferences and settings on my BlackBerry.

I do think that some of the problems I have are due to being on the Sprint network. Occasionally my phone will just turn off, and I don't know it. I go to make a call, and it will say that the phone is off, and ask if I would like to turn it on. Hello- I am trying to make a call- YES, I want to turn it on.

Another thing that I really hate about the phone is when you are on a call and someone else calls and leaves a message. If your phone is set up for a ring tone when you receive a new voicemail- you (and the person you are talking to) will hear the ring tone in the middle of your conversation- and you can't turn it off- you have to let it run its course- not good when you are on the line with a client.

If you do decide to get a Treo, I suggest you set it so that the screen locks while you are on a call. Because it is a touch screen, you can do all kinds of damage with your cheek while on a call- set alarms & to-dos, change calendar events- lots of annoying things.

I also suggest that you set the phone to lock when you are not on a call. Before setting up this preference, my purse made many a phone call. MANY a phone call.

One thing that I DO like about the Treo- it syncs great with my calendar and email. I feel like I am always up-to-date with what is going on at the office.

All in all, I miss my BlackBerry. I wish I had never made the switch.

Amazon.com Hands-On Review

To keep your smartphone's applications up to date, and to optimize the performance of your device, you may need to perform firmware and/or software updates just as you would on your PC. To learn more about updates for your device, please visit Palm's support site. Note that by clicking this link you will be leaving Amazon.com.
The Treo name has been synonymous with QWERTY keyboard equipped smartphones for years - and with good reason. The devices have long been packed full of the features that power users require, while still fitting in the palm of your hand. The new Treo 700p from Palm is no exception. Based heavily of the massively popular Treo 650, the 700p gets a few upgrades where they really count while not messing too much with the rest of the Treo recipe for success. The main upgrades are a 1.3 megapixel camera, twice as much built-in memory, and EV-DO 3G data connectivity.

A palm tree on your Palm, in your palm.

But first, the physical design of the 6.2oz Treo 700p. The Treo has long had one of the best built-in keyboards on the market, and that is still true today. The QWERTY keyboard's keys are made of a hard plastic, but still have a good feel. The 700p's keys get a new square shape, and has had its direction-pad controller and hardware buttons reworked a bit: the green and red call keys are now located directly under the display, where the home and menu keys used to reside on the Treo 650. The 700p's menu key is now on the bottom row of the keyboard, a somewhat questionable position for a key that is so important to the Palm OS.

Speaking of the Palm OS, the version used in the 700p is virtually unchanged from that found in the Treo 650. As such, the user interface appears a bit dated, even though it is being shown on a very capable 320x320 pixel, 65k color touch screen. The stylus that is to be used on the display is stored in the back of the 700p and has a very nice heft to it, making it nearly as comfortable to use as a regular pen. Thanks to some clever work on the UI, though, there are relatively few instances where you truly need to use it.

In spite of the Treo 700p's somewhat dated OS, it is still a very capable and amazingly popular system when it comes to 3rd party application support. In fact, the Treo 700p ships with a number of 3rd party apps to make up for missing pieces in the OS, such as music playback. Due to the popularity of the Palm OS over the years, if there is an application that can be written for a mobile device, chances are good that it has already been written for the Palm platform.

The 700p features one of the best keyboards on the market.

Now that the 700p has over twice the available built-in storage as the 650 (and still has an SD card slot for even more), you should be able to load it up with all sorts of programs, games, and media files without problem.

The Treo's default PIM type applications like the Calendar and Contacts manager are all very good. Through the use of the included HotSync application, information from your desktop PC can easily be synchronized with the applications on your Treo. Another bonus from the use of HotSync is the automatic backup it provides. If your Treo ever gets lost or ceases to function, you can easily restore your existing HotSync backup to a new device with an absolute minimum of effort and be back in business in no time at all.

If you are an existing Treo 650 user, the biggest reason to consider an upgrade is the new 3G EV-DO data support. When used in an EV-DO coverage area, the Treo 700p will scream along at speeds many people would only expect to get at home with their DSL service. The 700p lacks WiFi support, but for those that live and work in EV-DO coverage areas, that won't be an issue at all.

1 out of 5 stars Palm Quality Control & Customer Service is below Sub Par.......2007-08-20

BUYER BEWARE! Read the reviews before considering buying this. The screws keep falling out on my palm pilot, and I've found that this is a problem that many people have had (just google "Palm Replacement Screws"). If you buy this, there's a good chance that you'll be the next person having the exact same issue - so be warned. It may not seem serious, but screws coming out basically means your unit casing will come off and that leaves the memory and all the important things you write down in your schedule UNPROTECTED.

When I contacted them about the issue, I found out what the Palm company was really all about. That is, getting your money and not looking back. Instead of admitting that their is a serious design flaw with their product, and doing what they could to rememdy the situation....they figure this is another way they ought to try and add to their profit margin. Not very smart. I'm not even asking them to apologize for their imcompitant case designs (which would help them save face imho). What really gets me is that theres enough people that have this problem for it to be clearly visible to the higher ups, and some executives at the company actually made the decision that they would trade 75 cents in screws for the loss of their company name. And If the guys running the PALM company are idiots, then it's time to look elsewhere.

I can't believe they wouldn't just ship out replacements and try to fix the product designs. But as I reseacrch the net to try and find some decent replacement screws for my own unit in the meantime, I just keep finding more and more stories of good people (who don't have problems with screws coming out of other small electronics btw) who are in the same pathetic PALM ownership boat as me. Am I ever sorry I bought the unit. Besides the screws, it has reset on me on a number of occasions and luckily I'm religious about backing up data. Still, you lose some entries and its a major pain. In fact, I did miss a meeting once because I missed reentering it after the unit reset and lost data.

Well Palm won't be fattening their margins on me anymore, and I hope you heed the warning I give. I am in the market for a new Handheld, but I'll NEVER allow myself to get swindled by them again. They could've used the problem as an opportunity to show their customers that they do value us and score some points. Unfortunately for them and for us customers, the cold response I've gotten from them tells me that they really could care less and do not have a long term outlook on what it means to sell a business product as important as a scheduling device. It's best to stay away from them. I'm through giving PALM any more business. If you find a better company, please do share.

2 out of 5 stars Awesome Phone, But Sprint is INTOLERABLE.......2007-07-03

Treo can do anything. Anything, period. There's nothing that I can't get, as long as I'm willing to pay through the nose to get it.

Live TV, (Daily Show, et al.) Sirius Music, email, youtube, whatever you can imagine.

BUT SPRINT IS TERRIBLE

True, they offer the Live TV and Sirius which I couldn't live without now that I'm spoiled.

But do not call Sprint and expect to be sane afterwards. I can understand busy times and what not, but for the last couple months it seems as though they have cut their workforce in half and doing business with them is intolerable.

INTOLERABLE

5 out of 5 stars Great for SMS, email and web browsing.......2007-06-28

If you're a heavy text (SMS) user, email user, or web browser, this is the phone to get in the United States. Fast Internet access, a full keyboard for fast typing, and a touch screen make this the best phone on the market today for serious communicators.

Be sure to plan on getting an unlimited data plan because you'll blast through data once you can.

Threaded text messages are awesome. Each person you SMS with gets their own thread so you can easily track SMS conversations. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Treo 700p ROCKS!.......2007-06-02

Have had my Sprint Treo 700p since November 2006, and in addition to the normal functions (phone, email, camera, camcorder, web, MP3 music, calendar, etc) since then I have been able to install Treo apps that allow me to:

* Stream live internet radio stations with Mundu and directly from other radio station websites like Shoutcast and IO.

* Added unique custom MP3 song ringtones for all individual contacts in my list so I know exactly who it is just by their ringtone. I can also use videos as ringtones.

* Play my iPod and Archos MP4 video DVD movie files from my 2GB or 4GB SD card in TCMP and Kinoma

* Read ebooks

* use Google Maps

* Listen to stereo music remotely via Bluetooth stereo headsets and receive calls simultaneously

* Watch the free Sprint TV channels included in powervision pack in real time

* With my Slingbox Pro and SlingPlayer for Palm OS beta I can now watch LIVE Cable TV, OR control a DVD Player, OR a ReplayTV DVR, OR a Motorola High Definition two-tuner DVR with ON-DEMAND programming AND ANYTHING I HAVE RECORDED PREVIOUSLY! The Slingbox Pro has FOUR video inputs, including High Def!

THIS IS AWESOME! While driving 65 mph using EVDO, I can hook my Treo 700p audio to my car speakers during my commute and listen to live all-music channels in high quality stereo from my cable DVR, I can switch video inputs on the fly to check the Weather Channel or traffic reports on basic cable, then later in the day at my workstation I can watch LIVE DAYTIME BASEBALL GAMES AS THEY ARE BEING BROADCAST!!!!

The Treo 700p is unbelievable! I am extremely happy with it. The Palm OS is incredibly simple and can be operated with one thumb on the 5-way navigator (don't even need the touchscreen or stylus). Sprint EVDO service is VERY FAST!

Everyone I come into contact with sees my Treo 700p, admires it and when I show them what it can do they are absolutely BLOWN AWAY! Then they all look down at their little feeble phones with a sad look on their faces...

Get one soon befoe they sell out, since they will be discontinued shortly!

3 out of 5 stars A very mixed bag........2007-05-24

IMO, the Palm OS is fantastic. Simple, reliable and innumerable applications. But after using the T3 for the past 3 years or so that small screen takes some getting used to though the screen resolution and brightness are outstanding.

The keys are tiny, tiny tiny! I simply couldn't get used to them in the short time that I owned the phone. I thought that using the touch screen for dialing would eliminate that problem, but misregistration of numbers occurred about 5 - 10 percent of the time - unacceptable. But I could have eventually gotten used to all of these "quirks" had the phone functionality been equivalent to my Samsung A900 - it is not.

The audio quality was, for me, substandard. My hearing isn't very good and I need crystal clear audio and the Treo did NOT deliver. The audio was slightly muffled - like having some soap suds in your ear canal. I was mostly able to understand the person on the other end of the line but I had to strain to do so.

Additionally, navigating efficiently through the phone options was cumbersome for me and not nearly as efficient as the Samsung A900. The Palm functionality is very good albeit a smaller screen than I would like. Internet connectivity was very good and without a hitch, HOWEVER, that pesky little screen again.

Like I said, I could have put up with the deficiencies had the audio quality been on par with my Samsung phones. My advice: check the audio quality very carefully before buying. If it is acceptable to you then this phone is very nice although FAR from perfect.
