|
Design
Like the BlackBerry 7105, the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl is a departure from the form factor of previous BlackBerry devices. This BlackBerry handset is far more phone-like, and RIM's engineers have managed to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset's slim frame. Each button on the keyboard shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl's handset's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.
The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl sports a large 240 x 260 screen that supports over 65,000 colors--plenty of real estate to view your emails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. The venerable BlackBerry trackwheel has been replaced on this model with an innovative four-way trackball placed below the screen. On the rear of the handheld, you'll find a 1.3-megapixel camera and a self portrait mirror. The handheld's microSD memory card slot is located inside the device, behind the battery. There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, as well as a mini-USB port for data connectivity.
Calling Features
All the calling capabilities folks have come to expect in a wireless phone are present in the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. The handset's speakerphone makes it easy to use the device hands-free, or if you prefer, you can use a wireless headset via the BlackBerry 8100c handheld's built-in Bluetooth capability. A vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book (limited only by the unit's 64 MB of internal memory) are also included. Any of the phone's 32 included polyphonic ringtones can be used to create caller-specific ringers, so you can know who's calling without having to look at the handset. The unit comes with built-in ringtones, and more ringtones are available from Cingular's MEdia Net mobile Web service.
See the 8100c Pearl in detail (black version shown). |
A new feature, speaker independent voice dialing, allows you to call contacts with the sound of your voice. No prior voice training is required; you can just say a contact's name to call them.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
While the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl is a different kind of BlackBerry device, it still delivers the legendary BlackBerry email experience. With BlackBerry service plans from Cingular, you can receive emails instantaneously from up to 10 email accounts (personal and enterprise). With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your email. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new email arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing email attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).
If your company has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, you can take advantage of the power of wireless calendar synchronization. Your calendar events are exchanged wirelessly and automatically so that your desktop calendar and BlackBerry handheld calendar are synchronized. All your Outlook meeting requests, changes, and updates are instantaneously synchronized instantaneously with your desktop. Make meeting requests, invite new attendees, and more, all on your BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Use the BlackBerry 8100c handset's Web browser to access the Internet from the palm of your hand. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports, and more--all at fast speeds, thanks to support for Cingular's EDGE high speed data network. Instant messaging and wireless messaging are also built into the BlackBerry 8100c Pearl. MMS messages can be received and forwarded (Cingular messaging charges apply).
The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl ships with a number of tools, including a calculator, a calendar, an alarm, and a to-do list.
Imaging and Entertainment
The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl really kicks the fun up a notch with the inclusion of a 1.3-megapixel camera that features an LED flash and white balance controls. How about some music? The handheld's music player supports playback of your tunes in MP3, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+ formats. The handheld is also compatible with Java application and game downloads (available via the MEdia Net service).
Vital Statistics
The BlackBerry 8100c Pearl weighs 3.16 ounces and measures 4.2 by 2.00 by 0.57 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time and up to 360 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Good phone, lousy pda functions.......2007-12-15
I have had this phone for about 4 months. The size is very good and it feels good in the hand. The phone and PTT functions work very well. The e-mail works as advertised. The browser also works well. I had hoped to use this in place of my PDA but found out it won't serve my needs. You can't really store word or excel documents on it. The sure type has never learned to make "OK" when I type those keys and correct it. I find I text less because it is too slow. You can't save often used text messages. When this dies I'll look into something else. In the past couple of weeks the phone has locked up 3 times. The battery must be removed to reset the phone.
Converted non-BlackBerry believer.......2007-12-07
I was the one to make fun of people addicted to their BlackBerrys, now I am one of them. The Pearl is the perfect size for all that it holds, it has great features and an awesome speaker phone.
FUN TOOL!.......2007-09-25
This phone is perfect for "adults" who need a smartphone but want the features of an I-POD. In my line of work I spend alot of time alone taking readings, so I like to listen to music while I perform these tasks. Before I used to have to carry an I-pod as well as my Treo. Not anymore. The music player quality sounds just as good as my I-pod, which by the way, stays in a desk drawer now. It has the best mobile e-mail, google maps, infospace, you name it. With the 2 gig micro. card I have 250+ songs, the full length movie "SE7EN" and numerous pictures on this phone. This is my first "Berry" and I love it.
Can't go Wrong.......2007-07-29
I was skeptical buying a phone from Amazon and if anyone else is do not worry about it. I bought this phone from Amazon and it was exactly as advertised. ATT sells this phone for $250 with a new 2 year agreement. Amazon sold it for $.01. The phone arrived brand new as described and quickly less than 3 days.
I took my sim card from my previous phone put it in the new phone and was making and receiving phone calls in under 5 minutes. If you are upgrading phones and eligible for a new phone go to Amazon first and see if the phone you like is available...you can't go wrong.
So-so phone........2007-07-01
First, the call quality is very good- much better than my Motorola SLVR v8. If you're looking for a good phone, with a few extra "smart phone" features, this is a good choice.
Some observations after owning this phone for 2 months:
1) SLOW. Everything about the phone is slow from the applications to the AT&T EDGE network. This is NOT a 3G phone, and it shows.
2) The size is great, small and lightweight
3) The software that syncs with your computer (I use a mac) is very good.
4) Scratches easily. The phone is plastic, and the color (including the fake metal) rubs or chips off.
5) It requires a blackberry data plan from AT&T. It is VERY expensive, and probably not worth it. If you complain enough to the AT&T reps, they will give you an unlimited smart phone plan for a quarter of the price.
6) You will want to install additional software like Google Maps.
7) The battery is not very good
8) The the media player is poor
9) The ringer is very quiet
10) The keyboard is very easy to use, after you get used to it.

Customer Reviews:
My favorite phone to date.......2007-12-25
I'm one of those technophiles who always chases the latest and greatest in technology. This means I've been through A LOT of cell phones. In fact, I typically buy a new phone every 6 months or so, and the Blackberry Perl is my favorite cell ever. Finally RIM offers a great sleek form factor with great features.
RIM always stood out with their messaging capability, but that service came at the cost of clunky hardware with limited feature sets (ie. no camera, music, applications, etc). RIM stuck to their story "We design for corporate users" which left many of us longing for better phones.
Nothing is worse than having to lug reams of flip charts through the airport in order to have a meeting's results transcribed. In the past I would have to carry a separate camera with me all the time so I could take photos of my whiteboards and flip charts.
Evidently RIM has learned that the corporate market wants more than bulky featureless phones. The Perl has hit the mark. Slim, sleek, with a great interface and feature set.
A lot of reviewers don't like the keyboard, and neither did my Fiancee at first. However, I told her to give it some time to get used to, and now she loves it. (If you haven't used this style of keyboard before, this will be the biggest hurdle for you) Remember, the phone needs some time to build your custom word dictionary, and don't try to "out smart" the smart type feature.
I also love the voice recognition dialing that comes with the phone... Very cool.
My only complaint is how AT&T/Cingular & RIM rob you with the Enterprise service @ $50/month with no text messages. If your company doesn't use a Blackberry Enterprise Server you can get unlimited Internet for only $20 and check your mail via POP or IMAP. In either case, plan on spending a little extra if you want SMS and MMS messaging capability.
Nice design but seriously flawed.......2007-12-10
I first purchased the blackberry pearl through T-mobile in June of this year. A month later the speaker went out. I could only make or receive calls if I used the speakerphone...I managed to get a warranty replacement.
I month later my employer gave my a blackberry pearl for official use; two weeks later it crashed (wouldnt turn on.) I had to wait for 30 days before I got the warranty replacement.
Today my work blackberry pearl failed again; the speaker has gone out again..sigh...I have to say this is some real poor craftmanship.
I wonder if this is a problem specific to the pearl....anyways just thought id provide another data point for people considering buying it.
Guess I have to wait another 2 weeks before I get my replacement; thats 3 blackberry pearl's in less than 6 months..arrggg
Wait for next Pearl - this one has problems.......2007-09-07
While the Pearl shows potential, I am planning to return mine to AT&T within my 30-day evaluation period. This little BlackBerry shows a lot of promise but comes up short as being a reliable phone. This is my first BlackBerry, and even with its marvelous email functionality (bundled with AT&T's $29.99 data plan), I find this device cheaply built and finicky to use.
The durability of this unit leaves a lot to be desired. Like some of the cheapest phones on the market this unit features weak flimsy plastic casing. The unit feels like a toy in your hand, especially when removing the battery cover. An optional MicroSD card goes in this area so the battery compartment will need to be accessed over time.
Basic phone use is a problem. Battery life is nothing exciting. Like many other phones, the ring volume and call volume just isn't very loud, even at maximum. In noisy areas it becomes hard to have a normal phone call. The ringtone will not play simultaneously while the unit vibrates, so calls are often missed. Historically this has plagued all BlackBerry's. The "Vibrate+Tone" mode causes 1-3 vibrations before the ringtone begins. RIM has stated this may be fixed in upcoming units. Answering a call becomes even more difficult using AT&T's OEM leather case. The phone must be pulled out of the case before it can be used; the case has no holes for access while sheathed, or leaving the included headphone plugged in. Safely answering a call in a hands-free manner is near impossible and should not be performed with this phone especially if driving a car.
One of the features I was most excited about was the browser. While it offers some basic functionality, it is unable to utilize 90% of what's on the web. Most web sites will not function in this Java based browser, which does not begin to touch what might be accomplished on a device such as an iPhone. Graphics, sounds, music, animation, and Flash all don't work on the Pearl. You can do things like get directions and perform basic Google searches, which remains very useful, but forget any "fun".
If you can live with the cheap plastic build quality and are in need of email functionality in a small package you might want to consider this phone. Personally I cannot live with a device that is built like a toy and misses so many calls due to simple things like speakers that aren't loud enough and ringtones that cannot happen while the phone vibrates.
Amazing ... BUT..........2007-08-28
Feature packed phone that offers everything you would want in a phone in a compact design. I absolutely loved my phone, however, after only 4 months, the LCD developed a small crack in the screen. There is no explination for the crack as the phone has never been dropped, mishandled or misused. In fact, my phone is lightly used with maybe 600 minutes of talk time on it. The only explination I can come up with is the vibrate is rather violent. What you have to be cautious of is the fact that the manufacturer nor At&t will replace a cracked screen regardless of the reason. I believe there is a major design flaw in this phone that Blackberry and At&t are ignoring.
Amazing!!.......2007-08-11
This phone is simply amazing. I'm not a gadget freak & use the phone to make err... phone calls rather than using a multitude of features. The design & finish on this phone is amazing. Sound quality is excellent! Screen is very clear. Syncs very easily with Outlook etc. The sure type feature is very well done. Also note that there are no porting fees if you're new to Cingular/AT&T.
Finally,I bought the shield from shieldzone.com. It works like magic. I had a problem with all my other phones as I tend to keep it in the same pocket as my house key etc. Hence, all my phone got scratched pretty bad. But now with the little shield protecting my device, not a single itty-bitty scratch so far. Recommend the shield if you have the same scratch & paint chipping problem.

Amazon.com Product Description
The latest BlackBerry handheld is better than ever with a thinner profile, a huge screen, a more powerful processor, EDGE data support, and more. The BlackBerry 8700c, an integrated phone, e-mail client (with support for corporate email servers), organizer, and Web browser is the ultimate weapon for mobile professionals.
Take a closer look at the BlackBerry 8700c handheld's functions. |
Design
Design-wise, the BlackBerry 8700c is a nice upgrade from BlackBerry devices of the past. Yes, the same handy trackwheel is present on the right side, and yes, you'll still find a full QWERTY keyboard. This handheld is thinner and lighter, however, and the screen is bigger and brighter than ever; the high resolution 320 x 240 LCD display supports over 65,000 colors. Plus, intelligent light-sensing technology automatically optimizes screen lighting levels for indoor and outdoor viewing. The BlackBerry 8700c also features large, dedicated Send and End keys for easier call management.
The popular BlackBerry user interface is here, too, but it's been updated with a new look. Plus, a powerful Intel XScale processor, 64 MB flash memory, and 16 MB SDRAM combine to deliver a dynamic, highly responsive experience when viewing attachments and graphics, browsing the Web, and running applications. There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, and a removable lithium-ion battery is housed in the rear of the handheld.
Calling Features
Many of the calling capabilities folks have come to expect in a wireless phone are present, but the BlackBerry 8700c ups the ante with MP3 ringtones. Plus, the built-in speakerphone offers hands-free calling and convenient conference calls. The handheld's Bluetooth capability (version 2.0) means you can use a wireless headset with the phone for hands-free calling. A vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book (limited only by the unit's 64 MB of internal memory) are also included. The BlackBerry 8700c is a quad-band phone designed for global roaming in 170 countries for voice and 90 countries for data.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The BlackBerry 8700c delivers the legendary BlackBerry e-mail experience. With BlackBerry service plans from Cingular, you can receive e-mails instantaneously from up to 10 e-mail accounts (personal and enterprise). With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your e-mail. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new e-mail arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing e-mail attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).
Because the BlackBerry 8700c is fast, and because it supports EDGE high-speed data networks, users can take advantage enterprise applications that are wirelessly enabled by the BlackBerry platform, such as sales force automation, field service automation, network and systems management, and more.
If your company has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, you can also take advantage of the power of wireless calendar synchronization. Your calendar events are exchanged wirelessly and automatically so that your desktop calendar and BlackBerry handheld calendar are synchronized. All your Outlook meeting requests, changes, and updates are instantaneously synchronized instantaneously with your desktop. Make meeting requests, invite new attendees and more, all on your BlackBerry 8700c. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Use the BlackBerry 8700's Web browser to access the Internet from the palm of your hand. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports, and more. Wireless text messaging and multimedia messaging (MMS) is also supported by the BlackBerry 8700c.
The BlackBerry 8700c ships with a number of tools, including a calculator with a unit converter and a to-do list. The handheld's software is based on the Java platform, meaning Java-compatible games and applications can be added to the handheld.
Vital Statistics
The BlackBerry 8700c weighs 4.7 ounces and measures 4.3 by 2.7 by 0.8 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4 hours of digital talk time and up to 16 days of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/EDGE frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Great PIM.......2007-12-13
This phone is more than 2 years old and still going. This is one of the best phones for business you could ever have. 5 Stars
well worth it.......2007-11-27
i got this phone last week to combine my palm tx and cell functions together. I love it. my brother from nyc swears by his blackberry, and as an average person who is running all day, i have to agree. the internet hook up is good, the connection is way better, and overall i find this device user friendly. blackberry is especially good for the email. setting up your email to phone is easy and just takes minutes.
i love this phone. great for everyday use in the real world.
One of the best BlackBerry's ever made, but it has some drawbacks........2007-09-15
One of the best BlackBerry's ever made, but it has some drawbacks.
++ PROS ++
+ One of the brightest BB screens when it was released, the newer Curve and Pearl are brighter still. This thing can be used as an emergency flashlight.
+ Speakerphone mic has improved, but still isn't comparable to other well known cellular speakerphones.
+ Additional convenience button features including a new center console and side button which can be manually assigned to often accessed functions.
+ Battery life is decent, one of the longest lasting BB batteries I've owned.
+ Spare parts are readily available, too often owners think their phone is broken and end up going back to the cellular store and getting a new one with another / extended commitment with the replacement. Instead, look for the replacement, you can replace everything including the buttons and fascia, you can build an entire BlackBerry out of replacement parts found on the web.
-- CONS --
- Can never be jarred, if the phone is dropped just onto a table from your ear while sitting, the SIM card becomes dislodged and the phone enters "SOS" mode, everything but the radio works until you remove the battery and remove / reinsert the SIM card. Blackberry's can take an inordinate amount of time reboot and this can take you off the air and out of your address book for a few minutes.
- The screen scratches easily, it can eventually affect the readability of the phone display. It is worth using a screen protector, even an application clear packing tape is better than nothing.
- AT&T EDGE network is just PAINFULLY SLOW, this phone can also be used as a Tethered Modem for your PC, you'll experience ISDN (128 KBs) bandwidth. Sprint and Verizon offer DSL speeds (384+ KBs) on their networks.
- The browser is still a cellphone browser and has problems with sites that contain frames, sites like Amazon have modified special sites when they detect you're using a cell phone web browser, but some sites don't and will take minutes instead of seconds to download.
- / + Extreme customization, careful when modifying settings because you can end up losing characteristics or get buried in menus, this can also be considered a positive if you enjoy customizing your phone.
Had it for more than a year without trouble.......2007-05-19
so far, the phonebook is what really win me over this phone, big screen, qwerty keyboard, side scroll buttons, etc.
very useful phone especially if you got multiple phone entries for contacts.
My First BlackBerry.......2007-05-15
Since it's my first "smart phone" of any kind I don't have much to compare it to. I'm a simple person and so I needed a simple phone that is good for text messaging. I purchased this phone for the full keyboard. That was the only reason. So far it has worked perfectly for me. Just remember that this phone is not an MP3 player, it doesn't have a camera and it doesn't have the ability to share data via bluetooth, but it works great for texting, email, and light surfing.

Amazon.com Product Description
The latest BlackBerry handheld is better than ever with a thinner profile, a huge screen, a more powerful processor, EDGE data support, and more. The BlackBerry 8700g, an integrated phone, email client (with support for corporate email servers), organizer, and web browser is the ultimate weapon for mobile professionals.
Take a closer look at the BlackBerry 8700g handheld's functions. You can also see it in action. |
Design
Design-wise, the BlackBerry 8700g is a nice upgrade from BlackBerry devices of the past. Yes, the same handy trackwheel is present on the right side, and yes, you'll still find a full QWERTY keypad. This handheld is thinner and lighter, however, and the screen is bigger and brighter than ever; the high resolution 320 x 240 LCD display supports over 65,000 colors. Plus, intelligent light sensing technology automatically optimizes screen lighting levels for indoor and outdoor viewing. The BlackBerry 8700g also features large, dedicated Send and End keys for easier call management.
There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, and a removable lithium-ion battery is housed in the rear of the unit.
Calling Features
Many of the calling capabilities folks have come to expect in a wireless phone are present, but the BlackBerry 8700g ups the ante with MP3 ring tones. Plus, the built-in speakerphone offers hands-free calling and convenient conference calls. The unit's Bluetooth capability (version 2.0) means you can use a wireless headset with the phone for handsfree calling. A vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book that is limited only by the unit's 64 MB of internal memory, are also included. The BlackBerry 8700g is a quad band phone designed for global roaming in 170 countries for voice and 90 countries for data.
When it comes to your hand, the BlackBerry 8700g fits right in.
|
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The BlackBerry 8700g delivers the legendary BlackBerry email experience. With BlackBerry Internet Service, you can receive emails instantaneously from up to 10 of your existing email accounts. Or, if your company already has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you can choose a BlackBerry Enterprise Server Plan to access your corporate email. With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your email, as BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new email arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing email attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).
Because the BlackBerry 8700g is fast, and because it supports EDGE high speed data networks, users can take advantage enterprise applications that are wirelessly enabled by the BlackBerry platform, such as sales force automation, field service automation, network and systems management, and more.
Make meeting requests, invite new attendees and more, all on your BlackBerry 8700g. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software.
Use the BlackBerry 8700g handheld's Web browser to access the Internet from the palm of your hand. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports and more. Wireless text messaging and multimedia messaging (MMS) is also supported by the BlackBerry 8700g.

Best Business Phone.......2007-12-13
This is without a doubt the best phone for business. I have an iPhone and have had to return it for a battery issue. In it's place I started using my BB8700 and realized how much more functional the 8700 is for business use. I give this phone a 5 star rating.
Incredibly stable, functional, and just plain cool! .......2007-11-14
I've had this phone for a little over a week and while we're all usually proud of our purchases this new into it, I'd like to expound on why I like this phone.
First, I'll list the shortcomings to some people. These don't matter to me but you should know up front:
1) It does not have a camera of any sort. I personally don't need a 1.3mp or 2mp camera for lousy pictures but, if you were in an accident and wanted pictures, I can see the utility or if you were taking pics/video at a concert and wanted to send it to your buddies boasting about your awesome seats, I can see the utility there. I don't need it.
2) It does not have wifi. Again, I use the Blackberry service and surf the web with unlimited data streaming for a monthly fee. If you had wifi, you could theoretically do it at any hotspot for free and receive web-based email by logging in. Again, not crucial here but if you want that, pick a newer BB or an Iphone (or Ipod Touch)
3) It does not have GPS. I never used it before and can't quite see the utility for me but you may.
4) It does not have a removeable memory card.
Those are the big gripes AGAINST this phone by some. Let me tell you why I LOVE this phone.
1) It has a wonderful form and feel in my hand and it's super easy to type emails and texts with the full QWERTY and large screen. It's not super small but just right and it fits nicely in my pocket without looking strangely bulbous there.
2) It has been around and has a very rock solid stable OS, unlike the Palms I read about where people actually put up with rebooting and taking their batteries out 2-3 times daily? Are they nuts? I'd NEVER put up with that.
3) Awesome battery life
4) This is the biggie. The push email. What is this you ask? You can instantly (and seamlessly I might add) get your emails from ANYWHERE on the web without doing anything other than setting it up on your device. The rest is done for you. I have a .mac account, a Yahoo! account, and a provider.blackberry.net account. I receive emails from ALL of them without doing anything more than the initial setup (just entering your email addy and password..yep that's it) and the emails get sent (and can be replied from) to the BB device. That's it. I LOVE IT. Texting is incredible with the QWERTY.
I did look at the newer devices but I bought this phone, off Ebay, NIB, unused and had it set up via phone. Piece of cake. I've never used one of these devices before and I set up the Blackberry Internet Services and my emails in about 10 minutes tops. If I can do it, you can. I wasn't crazy about the trackball of the newer phones (this one has a trackwheel on the side) but people do like them and they have the features listed above this one does not. Those weren't dealbreakers for me as this was cheaper and works wonderfully. I don't even miss the camera and I never had wifi or gps before so I'm not missing that now either.
You owe it to take a look at this if you're considering a smartphone ( I briefly looked at the Treos but I cannot stand Palm OS and that 90's font, I'm so sick of that). I did not look at he WM Treos but I have heard people like them better. I also went a bit for the Blackberry Snob Factor (BSF).
Pimp My BlackBerry.......2007-09-24
I was tired of carrying around a relatively heavy date-book (and four different highlighters) in an attempt to keep track of my insanely busy life; thus, I began (albeit belatedly) considering a PDA device, and was intrigued by the idea of integrating it with my cellphone so that I had one less item to cart around in my purse. Since I'd always heard about the lure of the "Crackberry," I did some research and discovered the 8700g was being offered by T-Mobile, my carrier. And although this particular BlackBerry has been out for over a year, the consistently high reviews clinched the decision for me.
I've now had my 8700g for about three days and I'm in love. Not only was I able to consolidate (and yet expand upon) the address book that I transferred from my Motorola V360, but I loaded up my calendar and task list and instantly set up two POP3 email accounts -- the latter of which took me all of approximately thirty seconds to do.
Almost as quickly was I able to pair my Motorola Bluetooth headset with the device -- as well as my laptop. Admittedly, I had some issues getting it to work well with my computer, but I suspect that's more user-error on my end than anything else.
Sound quality is excellent, and the speakerphone was surprisingly clear. Thanks to T-Zones, I was able to instantly download some new Hi-Fi Ringers, and I set one of my own images as the wallpaper.
The QWERTY keyboard is fairly tight -- and I have small hands. But it's not so bad that it should be a deterrent; after a brief grace period, you'll be comfortable enough to type at a decent clip. (However, if you have especially large hands, I'd road-test the device at a T-Mobile store before purchasing it sight unseen.)
Some complain about the 8700g's instant messaging program, Oz -- but as with almost anything, there's a workaround. Several third-party apps (including my favorite, IM+) offer users the ability to use genuine instant messaging. Of course, it will cost you (either a one-time payment or a monthly fee, depending on which service you choose) -- but the 8700g is worth it. It's such a high-quality device that I would rather pay for add-ons than buy a lesser device packed with more features.
And that, really, is the crux of the 8700g. It's quality over quantity. No, it doesn't have a camera (I don't need one -- I've got a Canon Powershot and a Canon Digital EOS Rebel XTi), and it doesn't have Wi-Fi (not an issue for those of us in areas with consistent cell service) -- but that's because its focus is to be a great communication device, not a multimedia player. Besides, almost everything that it lacks (which isn't much) can be added on (including GPS). Start with a great base, and choose the things you want to add -- which is not to say the BlackBerry 8700g is without its bells and whistles. This is a spectacular, high-end item -- and it shows.
I'm extremely happy with my decision to purchase the BlackBerry 8700g, and equally as happy with my continued T-Mobile service (which, it should be noted, has the best pricing out there). I recommend this device to anyone looking for a powerful Smartphone and a reliable carrier.
Great product, great price, outdated.......2007-08-29
I have one of these and the price cannot be beat. It has some shortcomings, compared to more modern blackberries that you should be aware of:
* No expanded memory card slot (avail on 8800, 8830)
* Old wheel interface vs trackball, missing some buttons (8800, 8830)
* No GPS (8800)
* No WiFi (8830)
If none of that matters to you, then this is a great and very affordable option. I'm going to take mine back and get an 8800 or 8830, though. My main reason is because of the card slot. The device only has 64MB of memory onboard. With a SD card, I could easily and cheaply expand that to 8256MB, or 129 times more storage space. That's enough that I could also use my blackberry to transfer files or play MP3s. The interface improvements and GPS or WiFi will be a nice bonus.
Best BB Ever.......2007-08-21
Compared to my previous blackberry 7100i with Nextel, this is just an amazing device. I love the wide form factor sooo much more. I love the full keyboard. Tmobile is leaps ahead of Nextel. I just couldn't be happier. I have had this phone for almost one year exactly and it looks brand new! Best mobile phone/pda purchase EVER!

Customer Reviews:
It works! A miracle! It's cheaply made!.......2007-04-18
I own a KRZR. I needed a car-charger for it. This one seemed cool because of it's retractable cord. It IS cool! Has a bright blue light so you know it's on, and the retractable cord is key - I don't need wires sticking out of anywhere from within my car! Works great. I assume this mini-usb charger works for many other things, but all I care about is charging my phone when I use the GPS function, which is a battery-killer.
*UPDATE: After only a few dozen uses, this piece of crap BROKE. The mini-usb plug in part literally fell apart. The plastic isn't well-put-together and after only a few snaps of the retractable cord, it broke into several pieces. This thing is legit garbage.

Great Service! Good Seller.......2007-11-10
Great Seller. Shipping USPS was an issue, USPS lost the item during shipping but seller IMMEDIATELY replaced item and shipped right away. Very impressed with the seller.
Great contact also. I asked a question and it was answered by the next day. Good communication.
Great Price, Bad shipping.......2007-07-26
The product is new and the price is great (5 stars). My only problem was the shipping (1 star). They ship with the Postal Service. The Postal service has the worst tracking service. My other issue was that I e-mailed the seller several different times about the shipping. I still have not heard anything from the seller(0 Stars). The price was great, but the lack of contact from the seller would make me think twice about buying from them. It took about 2 weeks to get the battery.
