5 out of 5 stars Oppo Refurb DVD Player.......2007-12-17

After reading about how great Oppo DVD players were for their upconverting feature, I bought a refurb model that matched the specs on my small screen HDTV. The unit is truly AMAZING! My DVDs never looked this good! The refurb worked perfectly and my only disappointment was that it took two weeks to receive the unit.

5 out of 5 stars worth it.......2007-12-10

At first I was a little skeptical because I have never heard of the brand, but after spending over $5000 on a plasma, I needed something nice and easy. This DVD player was so easy to connect. And it came with an extra HDMI cable! How great is that?! The quality is really good, but I did have a couple problems...it has frozen, mid movie on brand new DVD's and doesn't play some at all. All and all I think it's worth the money for all the features.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player!.......2007-12-07

I was looking for a dvd player that would be able to handle upcoming technology and not break the bank. I did lots of internet research on sites like consumer reports. This player was given excellent reviews by every site and was in the top 5 dvd players out there. A great player!

5 out of 5 stars Very happy with Oppo.......2007-12-04

I spent a lot of time trying to decide which up-converting dvd player was the best choice for me. I could have bought a player locally for under $100 easily but I was concerned about the quality of the player. I am totally satisfied with the Oppo and amazed at the difference in the picture quality. If you are looking for a quality up-converter here it is.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible DVD Player Terrible Service from Amazon.......2007-12-03

This product stopped working less than two months after we bought it. It just stopped playing DVDs. When I called Amazon, I got a call center in India and Amazon refused to let me return the item and told me to call the manufacturer. I kept asking to speak to a supervisor and was put on hold three times. I never did get to speak to a supervisor but was finally told that Amazon would "make an exception" and let me return the defective item. But this was of no help as the item is no longer in stock. When I asked the call center employee when it would be in stock, he had no idea and told me to just keep checking the website and call back when the website said it was in stock. I kept asking for a timeframe of when it might be in stock and he had no idea. I asked if I could get a similar DVD player instead, and he kept saying "Yes, you can get a similar DVD player" but he obviously did not understand what I meant - language barrier issues - because he kept telling me to call back when the item was in stock. I kept asking if I could get a similar one and we went round and round until I gave up. I asked if I could get a confirmation number so I wouldn't have to go through this all over again the next time I call and he couldn't give me a confirmation number or promise a confirmation e-mail and just said he would make notes in my file. When I asked for his name, it took ten minutes of him spelling it for me to get it, and I still am not sure I have the correct name. ("T" as in tower. I hear "P" as in "Power." I say "P?" No, "T" as in "Tower" and so on.)
I would never order electronics from Amazon again.

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy your favorite DVD movies in high definition without having to wait for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players with the affordable Samsung DVD-HD960 single-disc, progressive scan DVD player--the perfect partner to your HD-capable LCD or plasma TV. Where standard DVD players (even progressive scan models) provide just 480 lines of resolution, the DVD-HD860 will "upconvert" the picture up to 1080p (as well as 720p and 1080i)--taking full advantage of your HD television's sparkling resolution. This elegantly slim unit can also play a wide range of disc and file formats and offers a number of playback convenience features, including bookmarking, multiple camera angles, and folder accessibility on MP3/WMA-formatted discs.

The DVD-HD960 upconverts a standard DVD's native resolution (480p) to output close to high-definition formats (720p/1080i/1080p). To achieve that higher resolution, the player fills in additional image data by assessing existing pixels and intelligently predicting what the surrounding pixels should look like. Because the upconversion process occurs in the digital domain, no data is lost (compared with analog conversion) and the resulting image is close to pristine. To produce an upconverted picture, your high-def TV must have an HDMI connection (and HDCP support)--the 720p/1080i/1080p choice is only available when using the HDMI cable (which is not included). Also note that the DVD-HD960 is not a high-definition DVD player (i.e., not to be confused with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players, which play specially formatted high definition discs), so it will work with your existing DVD library.

This player also features DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) upconversion via the Faroudja FLI-2310 chip, which substantially eliminates jagged edges that appear when standard interlaced video is viewed on progressive-scan displays.

This player is compatible with a wide range of disc formats, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, and SVCD, as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG file formats. Compression rates supported for MP3 are from 128-192 kbps and for WMA from 64-192 kbps. JPEG files can be seen in a slide show with intervals of 6, 12, or 18 seconds between images; and you can zoom in (2x or 4x) on an image or rotate it 90-degrees clockwise.

The bookmark function lets you mark and store up to three scenes at a time for easy recall. Instant replay shows you the previous 10 seconds of the movie again--in case you missed something important. Instant skip jumps ahead 10 seconds--in case you want to miss something. And parental control lets you set a password that must be given before a password-protected disc can be viewed.

It features the following video and audio connections:

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a system for protecting DVD content outputted via DVI/HDMI from being copied. It provides a secure digital link between a video source (PC, DVD. etc) and a display device (TV, projector, etc). Content is encrypted at the source device to prevent unauthorized copies from being made.

High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 720 lines.

3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2007-08-05

This is a pretty good purchase. I like that it came with an HDMI cord, which I'm not sure it still does. Honestly, I can't say that I notice a tremendous improvement over progressive scan, but it does work well overall. I'd almost say one should wait a little longer, and then make the upgrade to true HD playback via bluray or HD DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Good DVD player, but..........2007-06-10

This is a good DVD player (good picture, and low-profile), however, like the other reviews say...it is V-E-R-Y...S-L-O-W. I bought this DVD player because it was one of the first "non-HD" players with 1080i & HDMI outputs. It takes way too long to load up the disc once you put it in. Also, the menus are very sluggish, and not very intuitive at all. I would rate this specific DVD player "AVERAGE" at best. I would definitely consider other ones first...do your research, and then come back to this one if you don't like anything else.

1 out of 5 stars never worked!.......2007-06-10

This product came highly recommended by our AV guy who was putting together our media room. We purchased it (not through him) and he got it all installed and looked like everything was going well. About 20 minutes into playing the first DVD it "skipped". It dropped sound and picture for about 2 or 3 frames. At first we thought it was having a problem upscaling the dvd...but even at native resolution it continued. We contacted Samsung and were told we had to ship it to the service center in California. I talked to another AV guy who said they had an office FULL of these players that have quit working or have this skipping problem. Looks like we'll be buying the Toshiba to replace it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD Player.......2007-05-19

The Samsung DVD=HD960 is the best DVD player I have ever owned. It is incredible just how high the definition is compared to any other player I've seen. Everything I watch is now in high def, thanks to this player.

5 out of 5 stars Great buy.......2007-05-07

This dvd player most obvious differance is the upconversion process,on new movies the process is still effective but not as obvious as when watching movies produced before HD came along. Watching movies filmed prior to approximately 10 years ago the improvement is very noticeable. Watch the movie "Zulu"and you can see the difference.Well worth the cost over a normal progressive scan DVD player.

1 out of 5 stars This is the worst DVD player I've ever owned.......2007-12-10

- It takes around fifteen seconds (!) to begin viewing a DVD after inserting it
- The pause while switching layers on a dual-layer DVD is longer than on other players I've owned
- It will randomly freeze while playing audio CDs (this is not a problem with the discs - they are in pristine condition and can be played by any other CD/DVD player in the house)
- Front panel buttons are poorly designed (there are no menu navigation buttons, but there's a 'video select' button to switch between outputs? Who uses that more than once a year?) and don't always seem to function as expected (pressing the Power button doesn't seem to do anything while the disc tray is open).

1 out of 5 stars so very disappointed.......2007-10-08

We loved this DVD player for the first 6 months, then it the power started shutting off randomly. I did every troubleshooting thing I could think of, and came up with nothing. I also went to the Samsung website, and tried to find help there and came up with N-O-T-H-I-N-G! We bought the DVD player b/c we bought a Samsung HD flatscreen TV (love it-- no problems). However, this is our second samsung dvd player- hated the first one too! I should have known! The first one was several years ago-- thought it was a fluke. For as much $$ as this one was I can't believe how much this one SUCKS! I am going back to buying cheap DVD players. I am so mad! The power won't stay on for more than 1 or 2 minutes! NOT WORTH THE $$$$$$$

5 out of 5 stars HD860, a good buy.......2007-08-13

I had an old progressive scan DVD player by Memorex. That older player gave a good picture on 720p hd at 480p. I however wanted to utiliuze my TV as best I could while Blu-Ray and HD duke it out like Beta-Max and VHS. I decided on this unit after reading consumer reviews and profressionals as well. I am very pleased. I have not experienced the freezing as described by some and have had no problems at all since purchasing one. My television does not convert the digital sound through it's DVI port but the sound from the stero plugs is a marked improvement over my old player. The sound is layered more than before, warmer and crisper. The picture needs to be adjusted to 720p or 1080i each time the player is turned off via remote. Not a big deal, though it would be nice if the player detected the TV max res and upgraded automaticaly, but, a minor task. I watched LOTR Fellowship after hooking it up and I was blown away at the sharpness of the picture, the clarity, the richness of color and the details of the sets and costumes that had been hiding. It was like watching some scenes for the first time with the improved sound and picture quality. I would definately recommend this item if you want to upgrade the viewing of DVD's if you have a 720 on up, other wise stick with a progressive scan. You must have an HDMI or DVI port on your TV to get the upgrades above 480. I am very pleased with this product and am surprised at how Samsung has improved over the years. I had trouble with set up and received excellent customer service.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid Samsung products........2007-08-03

I have the same problems with this player that many of the other reviews here and on other sites are pointing out. My player always had abnormally long load times, would switch off for no reason, and would often not be recognized by the TV (a Samsung DLP no less) when its source was selected. It now will not read even brand new DVDs at all. I have been told that I am responsible for the cost of labor for the repairs (around 45 dollars) as it has been more than 90 days since I bought the player. Considering I can replace it with a brand new player from a different manufacturer for less than 70 dollars, and that it is obvious from so many of these reviews that there is a problem with this model, the burden of these repair costs seems to me to be completely unreasonable. Taking into consideration my broken Samsung cell phone being repaired by T mobile right now too, I'm fed up. I like my TV but Samsung will not be getting any more of my money.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible........2007-05-27

Worked fine for two months. Now, it shuts off ALL THE TIME, for no reason. Constant need to reset the thing. Junk.

        Samsung DVD-HD850 Up-Converting DVD Player

        Product Description

Buying a DVD player should be simple. When dealing with new widescreen technologies matched with HDTV capabilities, it may be important to consider whether your DVD player's performance can be upgraded to meet new resolution standards. Progressive Scan, for example, meets 480p video display. It does not support 720 and 1080 display resolutions. The Samsung DVD-HD850 does. That's where this player has the edge. RCA A/V Cable Unit Dimensions (W x H x D) - 16.9 x 2.3 x 9.8 Color - Silver

        Amazon.com Product Description

Samsung's DVD-HD850 single-disc, progressive scan DVD player enhances video performance by increasing the video resolution of ordinary DVD titles and up-converting them to HDTV compliant formats (720p/768p/1080i), enabling you to enjoy an HDTV compliant picture-roughly twice the resolution of progressive scan DVD players.

It's compatible with a wide range of disc formats, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, and SVCD, as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG file formats.

The 720p/768p/1080i DVD Players greatly enhance video performance by increasing the video resolution of ordinary DVD titles and up-converting them to HDTV compliant formats. A normal DVD player outputs 480i (interlaced) video. Progressive Scan DVD players can roughly double that resolution by outputting 480p video. the HD players enable you to enjoy an HDTV compliant picture-roughly twice the resolution of progressive scan DVD players. It is not High Definition DVD, so it is not a new format and works with existing discs.

It features the following video and audio connections (which includes HDMI for uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between the TV and any HDMI-equipped audio/video component):

        5 out of 5 stars Good value!.......2007-11-19

I wasn't expecting much due to the low price, but was surprised. I tried it on HDMI and component. The unit has a remote control "hack" that will allow it to output in high definition over analog component, if you are using an older HDTV without digital inputs (like my first generation CRT). Picture quality is great on both my HDTV sets (professionally calibrated)and looks almost as good as a Blu-ray disc on my PS3.

1 out of 5 stars Dont purchase a REFURB unit.......2007-03-04

I decided to get a refurb from SAMSUNGMALL. The unit ceased to function in a matter of 3 days after receving. The quality is really dissapointing. SAMSUNGMALL's responsiveness has been zero, and Samsung's service center is less than desireable. Be aware of these refurb deals!

3 out of 5 stars NO HDMI CABLE INCLUDED***.......2007-01-19

So I got a refurbished DVD player from "samsungmall" retailer. I opened the box and there is no HDMI cable despite the Amazon ad clearly stating:

        What's in the Box
Samsung DVD-HD850, remote control, AAA battery, HDMI cable, AV cable, printed instructions

I've already sent a feedback to the retailer. Don't know if I will get this cable but just beware if you are planning on purchasing the refurbished option of this player.

Overall, the dvd player works pretty well so far but of course without the cable I can't tell the difference between HD and component.

it is a great dvd player. and i like the little blue light! i think it is cool, it goes with the samsung 42" plasma tv. and it has a little bule light to... the picture is real good on it too. it is easy to use. and it is HDMI. use it.... ( timbo )

5 out of 5 stars Excellent picture AND sound. Superior price........2006-05-15

I paid 5 times as much for my last DVD player. It is amazing how much clearer my picture is with this Samsung. Great value for the price. Even better, I hooked it up in under five minutes--one HDMI cable is all that is needed for audio and video!

2 out of 5 stars Good for awhile only.......2007-03-12

Samsung- good out of the box for about a year or so. I bought this new for $180 when released. Lasted about 2 years. The SW got corrupted somehow. No "restart" or "reboot" to bring about like you have for a CMOS on a motherboard of a computer or for that matter many electronic devices these days. Supported many formats out of box as advertised even home-grown DVDs, but the reliability isn't there. My really old Sony DVD still lives beyond this one. For this unit think 1 to 2 years life. If you want more life, look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste you money on this...........2007-02-28

Mine stopped working in 3 days.... don't waste your money on this. The seller, Samsungmall, and Samsung customer service is fairly unresponsive. Get something more reliable. DO NOT GET THE REFURBISHED UNITS as they have been poorly fixed.

1 out of 5 stars Only works in HDMI.......2006-08-11

Bought a refurbised unit. HDMI output great; component output miserable: all pink and grainy. Returned it for a replacement and the same problem with the replacement.

I reserve the single HDMI input on my TV for the cable box, so need to use the component output for the DVD.

Careful, or you may have the same problem.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player.......2006-08-09

I purchased a remanufactured model for dirt cheap and am very happy with it. I have a 50 inch Hitachi HDTV and the upconverting video quality is much better than a standard DVD player. You need an HDMI conection to take full advantage of the DVD player's capabilities so make sure your TV has one; although I think you can get an HDMI to DVI converter if your TV only has a DVI plug. No problems with the unit and it looks very cool as well. This is the place to buy one for a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Don't get the refurb just yet!.......2006-03-24

While this is a great unit, this model has been discontinued, and is being replaced by the HD-860. This is expected to be out in stores by the end of March, and retails for $99 - cheaper than the model it is replacing!

        http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EIEEYG/ref=cm_rna_own_wish_prod/103-9744111-8731001?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=172282

You're much better off waiting another week or two, and paying a little more than you would for the refurb model, but you'll get the two pluses of a more advanced better model - and it is new!

        Product Description

Samsung's latest generation DVD players bring a new level of performance and prestige to this fast growing format. Samsung DVD players are specifically designed to deliver the ultimate in picture quality and convenient features. The DVD format has grown incredibly over the past few years and Samsung has delivered players with all the features you are looking for.PRODUCT FEATURES:1080i / 720P Video via DVI (Digital Visual Interface);Progressive Scan DVD Player;Jog/Shuttle Multi Remote;Titanium Hot Stamp Finish.

        Amazon.com Product Description

Samsung's DVD-HD931 aims to redefine DVD picture quality, using high technology to upconvert DVD-Video images to resolutions better suited for today's high-definition displays (720p/1080i). Even if you're planning to upgrade your television at a later date, this player will work with your current set and all commercial DVD-Video media, as well as your homemade MP3/WMA music CDs, Picture CDs, and CDs filled with JPEG image files.

The DVD-HD931 goes beyond the typical progressive-scan DVD player by adding a built-in video scaler that permits output to a HDTV.
Standard DVD players output 480i (interlaced) video. Progressive-scan players roughly double that resolution by outputting 480p (progressive scan) video. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DVD-HD931's 480p output can be sent via a dedicated DVI (digital visual interface) output or the more traditional component-video outputs.

The DVD-HD931 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Faroudja's de-interlacing technology (DCDi) is built into the device, performing directional interpolation--detecting the angle of a pixel's outer tilt--on each pixel. Video signals are de-interlaced according to that angle, thereby correcting image vibration, stair-stepping, cut-off, and other common video-processing artifacts.

Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: the unit's 3-D Sound function simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on a TV).

Other features include EZ View letter box eliminator (which adapts widescreen images for 4:3 aspect-ratio TV sets), motion zoom (which magnifies selected screen areas by 2x or 4x), instant replay/skip (which initiates a 10-second jump backward or forward), and bookmarking (which lets you mark sections of a disc for rapid access).

        Three keys to high-quality pictures
DCDi technology: By adopting the Genesis FLI2310 chip, where Faroudja technology was materialized, it perfectly corrects vibration, stairs, cut-off, and other standard operational errors that may occur in a picture.

DNIe chip: By adopting the DNIe (Digital Natural Image Engine) chip, the DVD-HD931 displays a clean picture. This is done by reproducing a digital source that passes through an FLI2310 chip as it is without any loss of picture quality.

DVI video output: No reduction of picture quality or distortion can occur when adopting DVI that supports Digital Image Perfection.

        Two keys to superior sound
HDCD and DVD-audio playback capability: Unlike a normal DVD player playing only an ordinary CD, Samsung's DVD-HD931 enables you to hear HDCD and DVD-audio formats, which are of significantly improved quality.

Dolby/DTS digital output: It streams out Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel streams and enables you to hear the same degree of the original sound that would be heard at a movie theater.

        Video format conversion
A normal DVD player transmits a video signal to 480i output when playing a DVD title (480i/480p). Even with a progressive-scanning DVD player, it simply outputs a video signal of 480i to 480p. However, Samsung's DVD-HD931 enables you to enjoy an HDTV-compliant picture with an ordinary DVD title, thanks to its scale-up to 720p/1080i.

        Motion adaptive de-interlacing
Motion adaptive technologies produce the finest progressive output available. They detect the amount of motion and use an appropriate mix of spatial and temporal processing with the highest resolution for still areas that have no motion artifacts in moving areas.

        DCDi
The Samsung DVD-HD931 performs directional interpolation on each pixel with DCDi technology, which detects the angle of an outer tilt by pixel, and then de-interlaces a video signal according to the angle. This state-of-the-art video processing technology is incorporated for even higher picture quality assurance. DCDi eliminates the jagged edges that appear when standard interlaced video is viewed on progressive-scan displays, which means that progressive-scan DVD players that feature DCDi technology produce images that look more smooth and natural.

        What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, 2 AAA batteries for remote, user's manual, video/audio interconnect (stereo analog audio/composite-video cables).

Note: This player's DVI output is a high-bandwidth digital interconnect compatible only with high-resolution HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protect) digital displays.

        3 out of 5 stars "Up-converting" is useless in a DVD player.......2006-03-21

OK, maybe I'm on a little bit of a "jihad" here against these up-converting DVD players, but bear with me because I do have a valid point.

Don't buy any DVD player because it can "up-convert to HD". Evaluate all DVD players on whether they do everything else well, or have the connections you need (DVI, HDMI, etc.) or the price is in your budget. This may be a fine DVD player, but don't buy it just because it can up-convert, and don't use the up-convert capabilities of this player even if you do buy it.

If your TV can accept 720p or higher input via DVI or HDMI, then it is already scaling the image to fit the native resolution of the display device. And if it isn't doing a better job of it than any DVD player, then you bought the wrong TV.

They spend a lot of time going into the technology of image scaling and line interpolating in this product description, and it's all very accurate, but what I don't get is why anyone would think a $200 DVD player would do a better job of this than their multi-thousand dollar TV which has the scaling technology already built into it designed for the specific display device inside the box.

My final point: If this up-coverting technology is such a good idea, why is Samsung the only one doing it? Why not Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, JVC, and Denon? (Because they know it's usless technology).

        1 out of 5 stars Bad Product.......2005-01-10

Steer clear of this product unless you like your DVD movies to freeze up and skip at the most inopportune moments. Last night I had to move to the bedroom and use my old $75 DVD player to finish watching a movie. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2004-10-12

I have had this for over a year now. So far, I am satified with it.

        Pro:
DVI-I output is far superior than the run of the mill regular 480p. Pick your choice, 720p or 1080i. Plays all my burned DVD-R's just fine. Sound is good. The unit's build quality is good. Remote can control TV.

        Con:
Very very picky. Does not like VCD's. MP3 and JPEG CD's need to be burned with specific format (ISO 9660, etc..) to work. JPEG display is poor and butt slow. Huge jug-dial that glows blue LED can be annoying (personal preference).

Overall, if you primarily use it for DVD or MP3 via DVI connection, it is fine. Anything else, better look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, needs work........2004-08-14

I've had this one connected to my Panasonic ED Plasma for several months now. Connections: DVI to Plasma, Optical to Denon 2802. Excellent picture quality. Scaling is a little lopsided and needs some work. I HAVE NOT experienced any undesired picture or sound effects. Not a bad DVD player.

2 out of 5 stars DVD-R does not work well with this player.......2004-07-04

Even though Samsung claims it can play all burnable DVD media, it does not work very well. I have tried all brands of media and it takes several minutes to half an hour to load a disc. I have also used media burned from different hardware with the same result. The picture on my 60 inch lcd projection using the DVI input looks great, but the remote is terrible and it is unable to play media that works in cheap freebie players. Wait for a DVI enabled player from a good company.
