I am very Happy with the difference that This player makes in the normal dvd's besides of course the way real HD dvd's look. It expands and resizes the normal dvd's to almost look like they are HD. The HD dvd'd look just the same as the best HD TV Broadcasts. The product is very user friendly and easy to set up. It appears that so far the HD DVD's have just about the same availability as blue ray, and the price for the player is about $130 cheaper than the comparable blue ray player.

I bought the A3 (1080i) for myself, and my son bought the A30 (1080p) for himself, they both work great! Easy to set up out of the box using the internet hookup... Just hook up to the DSL cable and it does the rest, downloads the latest software for carefree operation and viewing... just be patient and follow instructions... if you cannot hook up and download, Toshiba will send you a CD to download the info. Picture and audio quality are great. As one reviewer stated, good response time to remote commands, but a bit slower than a standard DVD player... much more data to load. Also, does a great job upscaling my standard DVDs to look like HD... As for the competitive battle between HD and Blu-ray, no problem, we all win... the prices keep falling... maybe when Blu-ray reaches a reasonable price as has the Toshiba HD, I'll purchase that as well... then I'll have a true choice of what I watch.
Excellent Buy!.......2007-12-25
Perfect time to buy! The upgrade has made a world of difference from my old Sony progressive scan player. Caught this item for $169 in late November and prices rose slightly thereafter. If you have any experience at all with electronics, you find this very easy to set up and navigate.
Stick with Toshiba - I have and have never been disappointed!
Toshiba HD-A3 review - excellent starter.......2007-12-24
The HD-A3 is an excellent entry level step into the hi-def DVD world you can make without a huge hit to the budget. It can't do 1080p, but either can my TV, so I wasn't concerned about that. The picture looks fantastic and the colors are excellent and I am projecting onto a 110 inch screen, so it has to look good. My A3 came with an HDMI cable, which carries video and audio for a clean look. HDMI cables can run in the $20-30 range, so it was a nice include. The HD-A3 also doesn't do 7.1 surround sound (only 5.1), but most of the HD DVD players that do 7.1 are cost about double. You also get a good bit of HD DVDs to start with, which would normally run in the $20-30 range. Be wary, the Blu-Ray VS. HD DVD battle isn't over, but for this price, it was worth it to make the jump with HD-DVD (plus betting against Sony hasn't hurt me with the Beta, mini-disc history).
Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-12-24
I ordered this item expecting something good. I did not expect something great. Granted, it did not have every bell and whistle I had come to enjoy in other DVD players and the response to 'power up' or loading a DVD is 'stately'. Putting that aside, the HD DVD player is extraordinary! The picture is wonderful, the options fantastic, and the price was unbelieveable for the product that I received. I cannot adequately express how happy I am with this purchase.

I picked this up when it was on sale for around $150. It also came with 10 movies. So far I have had no problems. The HD movies are really nice. It also makes regular DVD's look really good too. I'm actually thinking of buying another if the price is right.

I also experienced the same problem about pauses and delayed audio at the middle part of the movie, but all it needed was firmware upgrade.
I called toshiba to request the disc for upgrade and i got it within a week.
In my opinion, there is no visual difference between 1080i and full hd.
It comes with hdmi cable, and it did its job, you do not have to buy an expensive one.
HD-D3 PLAYER WORKS PERFECTLY.......2007-12-03
This model HD-D3 is the Costco version of the HD-A3...It's identical.
I had the same problems with this model as the previous reviewer did. I hooked my unit up to the internet via the ethernet port and downloaded the firmware update. It was a very large update. Following that upgrade, the unit worked perfectly.
The only problem I have with HD DVD players in general are the disk themselves. They must be perfectly clean before you view. I find even brand new disks need to be cleaned. I never get the pauses, skips, and stoppages if I clean the disk first. If you rent from a box store, or Netflix, they are especially vulnerable.
I also have an A20 as my 2nd tv is 1080P. It works great providing the the disks are clean, not damaged, the and firmware is current.
I am also getting a BLU Ray since finally the prices are coming down. This way I have more titles to choose from, and if either fails, I'll have a player for either! Enjoy!!!!
Toshiba HD-D3 DVD Player.......2007-12-02
I got this HD DVD player from another store and it came with two free DVD's. The player had trouble playing one of the DVD's that it came with- freeze framing and distorting image and sound. I contacted Toshiba and they said it was a software problem and sent out a DVD with updated software to upload new programing into the unit. I did it and it still did not function correctly- same problem. I returned it to the store. Maybe I just got a defective unit but it seemed to respond to all the commands slowly. I am hoping to have better luck with another Toshiba model...

More than the quoted "weather resistant".......2006-10-21
We bought for spousal communication when husband is working elsewhere on the property. Works great for that purpose and charges faster than advertised. My husband came in for the day not realizing until the following day that he had lost the radio. Searched for days with no luck. Three weeks later (and many rains later) he almost twisted his ankle on it in the woods. The display was full of moisture and the faceplate muddy. Rinsed it off and put the hairdryer to it, back onto the charger and next day it was seemingly as good as new.
We were originally disappointed in the range but have since used a 17 mile range Cobra which has less actual range than the Motorola. The only way to get the advertised range on any of these is if both users were on (not in) forest towers with line of sight.

I bought these for a trip to whistler. My buddy alrady had a couple of older motorola units that were compatible with the fv500's. Overall, battery performance was acceptable and lasted more than a full day of use at top volume. Range was pretty impressive, but no where near advertised specs when there were buildings or mountainous terrain as obstacles. Works as expected and a great value for about $20-$30.

I have been a firm believer in Motorola radios and cellphones. These radios work great! They have batteries with no memory and charger, which is the way to go. The range is good with some interference, which you would have with any of these radios. I have found uses for these radios that I would have never thought of.
