While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. It also uses separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts.
Precision Drive 3 System

This product worked flawlessly as long as the warranty was good. Then....
It shut itself down. I checked Sony's website and found that they would
exchange it.....for $103.04....almost exactly what I paid for it in the
first place. No thanks. I will never buy another Sony product, save for
their TV's. By some fluke, they are excellent.
Great progressive scan 5 disk DVD changer.......2007-12-07
I've been using Sony 5 disk DVD changers going back to the 1990's and they've all been great. The last DVD player was a progressive scan 5 disk changer with SACD, and is now in the bedroom because the Sony DVD player I bought back in the 1990's finally died.
This player works great I've only had it for a few months, but it has never given me any trouble, and I like features of the player.
My earlier main player had a great picture with its progressive scan, and to be honest I was a little disappointed in the up-scaling. But a 5 disk DVD changer with progressive scan at this price is a great deal regardless.
By the way I have it hooked up to a Sony 55" 1080i LCD HD TV, and have both the HDMI and a component cable hooked up, and when I switch between the two video input's I do see a subtle difference, but it's not an overwhelming change (however I do view the HDMI input most of the time).
Over all it's produces a great picture, and has all the features I look for in a DVD changer, and at this price level it really is a great buy.
Outstanding Picture Quality.......2007-08-25
I've had this player for 9 months and have been very satisfied with its performance. For those that own an HDTV with an HDMI connection, this is a great alternative to the currently high-priced HD-DVD and Blu-ray players and provides a near-HD quality picture at a much lower price. I've compared this player's video output with cable HDTV broadcasts and the DVD picture quality is very close to actual HD.
The player is connected to a 42" Sony HD microdisplay with an HDMI cable. I've also connected a standard 480p player to the same TV using a component cable and the picture quality was far inferior compared with the HDMI connection. The HDMI cable I use is reasonably priced at around $20 and works very well. It isn't necessary to buy an overpriced and overhyped cable like Monster's.
I'll eventually buy an HD player once the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray issue is settled. I'm very happy with this player in the meantime.
Excellent unit.......2007-08-22
I've had this player for over a year and have had absolutly no issues with it. Like most upscaleing dvd players it will only upscale to 720P and 1080I through HDMI-not componet. If you have an older hdtv without either an HDMI or DVI input you will have to look elsewhere-there are a few dvd players that will upscale through componet. I don't use it for playing cds-I have a Panasonic DVD-F87 5 disc player that excells at cds. The picture quality at 720P (at least on my hdtv) looks better than 1080I. Highly rated player in my book.
Disappointing.......2007-07-09
I received this player as a prize, and was really looking forward to using it. It worked fine for about 2 weeks, then the "locked" message was displayed on the unit, and the tray would not open. I followed the directions in the manual, which didn't work. I unplugged the unit, which didn't work. Finally, I contacted Sony, who told me that it would need to be sent in for service. After searching for a solution online, I've found that this is not an uncommon problem. I wouldn't recommend taking a risk with your money on this Sony.

DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can also be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for a simpler connection to a compatible AV receiver (but be aware that digital-audio interconnects are not supplied).
Precision Drive 2 provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less-than-perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs. Past generations of Precision Drive technology were only able to compensate for warped discs by moving the entire optical block, which took more time and limited the amount of correction possible. This newer system simplifies the process by moving just the lens (instead of the entire optical block) for faster and more accurate error correction.
As soon as you hook up the DVD player, a special Quick Setup screen appears ready to guide you through configuration, step by step, screen by screen. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Later, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for up to six discs.

Great multi-disc DVD player for less!!!!.......2004-04-07
Panasonic has come out with one of the best multi-disc, progressive scan DVD players on the market.. AND they have priced it where ANYONE can own it. The picture quality is great as is the sound. Only one thing to remember: when setting the player to progressive scan, you need to go to the on-screen menu to set the output to progressive scan. If you use the setup menu, it will say "progressive scan" but it won't display the DVDs in that mode unless you set it on the menu display.
I highly recommend this player to anyone who is getting into progressive scan DVD players for the first time. Great player at a great price!!!
Stay away from Panasonic!!!.......2004-03-15
I would put it below 1 star. My 5-disc Panasonic unit died of the infamous H07 code after 14 months. After searching H07 on google, the H07 is common on Panasonic DVD players, and it means it is time for a new player. Stay away from Panasonic!!! This changed my mind about Panasonic entirely.
So far so good.......2004-02-13
So far, all I've played on this player are DVDs, VCDs, and CD-Rs and it works fine. Although the player is a little slow to startup because it reads in some data first, it's not too bad. My old Sony cost 3 times more, but it was faster. This Panasonic makes a few noises when changing discs and stuff, but no big deal. The display is a bit small as well. Other than these things, the picture quality has been superb on my 32" Sony television via S-video connections. You can't beat the price though and the free shipping.
Cant beat it for the $.......2004-02-05
I'm sure there are better players out there, but not for this price. The slim design looks cool, but has 2 drawbacks, 1. if you listen to alot of music on it without the tv on its kind of hard to see whats going on, although the track numbers are large the rest of the info is tiny 2. the remote sensor is all the way to the right side, so the frame of the door that closes on my stereo rack blocked the signal, then again the slim design made it easy to find a hole to fit it in. Great picture, great sound I'm extremely happy
Very good for the money!.......2004-02-02
We recently purchased this DVD player and it is very good for the money. The only drawback is it lacks picture positioning settings, ours has been displaying video and menus to far to the left of the screen! We are exchanging this to try another one to see if it is any better. We know it is ot our TV as all other video sources are fine!

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
Precision Cinema Progressive technology uses a 12-bit video DAC (digital-to-analog converter) with high-bandwidth, 108 MHz processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. That makes this player's picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because it uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle different pixel behaviors. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.
DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 reverse pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
Depending on the disc, SACD music releases provide super high-fidelity multichannel and/or stereo sound. As an anti-piracy measure, the DVP-NC875V/S performs its own decoding of SACD signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate multichannel SACD releases. Built-in SACD bass management helps you tailor the output level of the ".1" LFE (low-frequency effects) channel to your system, as an appropriate level may differ from the output level appropriate for Dolby Digital and DTS surround mixes.
If you're not planning to use the SACD capability for multichannel programming, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can also be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (1 each RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for simpler connection to a compatible receiver (multichannel analog and digital-audio interconnects are not supplied).
Precision Drive 3 provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less than perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs.
As soon as you hook up the DVD player, a special Quick Setup screen appears ready to guide you through configuration, step by step, screen by screen. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Later, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for an impressive 40 discs.
Other playback features include 10-second instant replay, DVD/CD Text display (with applicable discs), a digital video enhancer, digital video EQ (equalization), custom parental control memory for 40 discs, as well as Advanced SmoothScan and SmoothSlow Modes.

Great Picture On My 55" HD TV.......2007-10-21
I've owned this player for awhile and it has never caused me any problems of any kind. It produces great image and sound quality through my 6.1 DTS EX and Dolby ES System 6.1 or 5.1 which is the only Dolby I've found on DVDs so far.
I would recommend this DVD changer to my family or best friends.
Broke after 8 months, had to replace.......2006-01-23
Well, I bought this particular DVD player, and loved it for about...8 months. Then, it wouldn't recognize any disks that were placed in it. I brought it in for repair, figuring if its cheap, i'll just get it fixed, since I liked it. Turned out the "laser assembly" had failed, according to the technician. It would be more expensive to repair than to replace, so I tossed it, and bought a different model from Phillips

Been using Sony DVP-NC875V/S player for about an year. Plays any kind of disc/format I throw at it. I have a 5 DVD netflix Membership and when the DVDs arrive I load em up in here and a Weekend full of movies without laoding and unloading discs.
My configuration consists of this player being connected to INFOCUS X2 Projector and SENNHEISER HD580 Headphones for a very good video and Audio experience.
Recommended.

This is an excellent DVD player, the best of the five set-tops I've owned so far.
Several of the reviewers present incorrect information about the player's capabilities. First, it DOES support MP3 tags, my MP3 disks--and I make a lot of them--show the names of the tracks. One could wish for MORE of the text to be displayed, but if one enters the data properly, the track can info can easily be read. In any event, this is normally only an issue with classical tracks, where, e.g., one might have a track title such as "Concerti for Two Mandolins, Strings, Orchestra, RV231, Allegro." With rock, pop, jazz tracks this isn't really an issue. The player, unlike ever other one I've owned, allows tracks to be scanned which aren't being played.
Second, the player's front panel display easily read from a distance of of 8 to 10 feet.
The picture quality is stunning with the latest generation DVDs. The first seasons of HBO's "Deadwood" looks absolutely stunning. Since I make legal archive copies of all my DVDs (for obviously reasons!) I can positively affirm that it supports all available formats (except Panasonic's proprietary RAM naturally). It handles over half a dozen different brands of DVD R & RW with no problem. I can also confirm that it has little trouble with scratched and damaged disks (provided my five year hasn't done a number on them!). While not 5-year old proof--and even PC burners have trouble with that!--it does deliver from moderately degraded disks.
We can dismiss the old nonsense about LPs sounding "better" than LPs right here and now. This was never true. I've listened to LPs in pristine conditions on $1,000+ record players and even the lowest end CD-player is far superior to any LP/record player combination. Asserting the opposite is indulging in nostalgia to the point of brain damage. I'll trade the clarity and lack of analogue fuzz and distortion over the fictional "warmth" of LPs.
Red-Book CD playback is excellent. But where it really shines is with MP3s, especially with 320 kpbs (the highest quality MP3 possible). It also handles CBR and VBR MP3s. The sound is absolutely stunning, far superior to Red-Book cds, let alone the century-old, cranky, crackly, popping archaic LPs. This player with also display album covers if they're in jpeg form. And MPS shuffle absolute IS possible with this player. Again, READING the directions will save one grief AND embarassment.
Although the Amazon technical description claims this player is not "THX certified"--I'm watching "Return of the Jedi" as I write this--it plays the THX is brilliant clarity.
This player has so many functions that I have yet to play with all of them. The "Quick Set-up" allows one to get going almost immediately. But it will take you a good while to explore all its capabilities.
It also has one outstanding function I've not seen on any other set-top. Even though my surround sound receiver doesn't have a DTS decoder, this player allows me to hear DTS tracks any way. An excellent and completely unexpected bonus.
I have yet to try the SACD capability, largely because there is very little music in which I'm interested that has been ported to this format.
Bottom line: a great player, with great features at an excellent price point. Ignore the ridiculous complaints from some reviewers and definitely consider this set-top.
