Great all around lens.......2007-12-02
I really have enjoyed this lens so far. My passion would be for sports, particularly my children's soccer games. I took one of the pictures above handheld, but would recommend a tripod for any other games. Her games are close and my son's games are a little trickier to get a good shot. I use a Canon Xti and really like how it works. I have taken school photos with this lens, and they have surpassed any professional taking them in the past. The only reason I didn't give the lens a 5 star is because mine is at the service dept at Sigma due to the AF not working. The nice thing is the lens carries a four year warranty. I'm hoping that it's just a fluke since I've had the lens only two weeks now. You will not be disappointed buying this lens. I thought I should get the Canon version, but have been extremely pleased so far with this lens. I also have the 70-300mm, f/4-5.6 Canon lens, but like others have mentioned it's nice to have that macro capability. Good Luck:)
Great moderately priced sports lens.......2007-10-15
I purchased this lens 6 months ago as an upgrade from my Canon 70-300 f3.5-4.5. Wow!!! I could not believe the sharpness of the images I was now shooting. I shoot sports with a monopod from the sidelines particularly football and lacrosse. Now I am getting crystal clear helmeted faces at 50 yards. This lens is silky smooth and a dream upgrade. The lens collar is well marked and allows easy and smooth transition from horizontal to vertical. The zoom moves from 200 to 100mm with a quick flip of my finger as the action gets close. I've been shooting my kids sports for 15 years and am absolutely delighted with this lens but you better have a monopod because it's a big heavy hunk of glass and not a carry around vacation shooter. It also makes a great portrait lens when tripod mounted with the sharpest eyelashes I have ever shot with any lens.
good lense... bad amazon.......2007-05-22
I am removing my review as Amazon feels it can edit reviews to only leave the positives about a product. They sited the review rules as the reason for it. However; after careful review there was no rule to justify re-writing my review to fit thier needs.

Great Lense.......2007-05-22
I found this lense to be very versitale and much better than my Tameron lense of equal caliber. It a little heavy but about a pound less than the Canon. I love it so far.
SIGMA Has it ALL for $475 Less.......2007-05-03
After Lot's of research, and hand's on at Canoga Camera I decided to purchase the Sigma over the Canon.
What you get for $839 is amazing package!
-lens
-case with shoulder strap
-hood
-tripod collar
The collar alone is worth $145. That is what you have to pay extra for the Canon f/2.8L.
It focuses very fast & precise. The images are absolutely stunning. I also like the matte black finish rather than the Stand Out White.
So it is up to you if you want to spend an additional $475 for the White "Cannon"

Customer Reviews:
Sigma Wow.......2007-11-02
At first I couldnt decide whether to buy this lense, or the Canon's 70-200L 2.8. I finally went with the Canon becasue there are so many great reviews on anything with the Canon name. After a week with the Canon I took it back, not becasue of the quality (it was excellent), but because of the price tag haunting me. I was ready to try the Sigma, and Im glad I did. Comparing the pictures against the Canons, I can say this baby performs every bit as good.
I had the pleasure of taking a safari with this lens, and the animals came out beautiful. Honestly im not looking back with this lens, it does exactly what I want, and the proof is in the pictures.
Great performance, bad quality control by Sigma.......2006-12-13
This is truly an excellent lens. Very sharp wide open, and just awesome stopped down. The focus is fast, silent and accurate. I compared this lens and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 USM, and the result was amazing. There was hardly any difference between the lenses( sharpnes, colour rendition, AF, FTM,...) The build quality of the Sigma is great, but I believe the canon 70-200 is better. The focus ring on the Sigma feels much better.
I use it mainly for portraiture and at soccer games, and couldn't be happier with the lens.
The reason I don't give the lens 5 starts is the Sigma's awful quality control. I had to try 3 copies of this lens before I got one with the performance I expect from an EX lens.
I highly reccomend this lens, but don't be surprised if you have to try several copies.
Product Description
Sigma's new Hyper Sonic Motors (H.S.M.) provides silent, responsive auto focus action with Canon, Sigma, and now Nikon AF cameras. H.S.M. also permits manual adjustment of focus without the necessity of switching off the auto focus function. Focus Free mechanism keeps the manual focus ring from spinning when the camera is auto focusing. This new lens features apochromatic optical design and four elements composed of Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass for high image contrast, resolution and color saturation. The front barrel does not rotate during focusing, due to internal focusing system. Internal zooming mechanism allows the lens length to remain constant during zooming.

High Performance Zoom with sharpness of a Prime........2005-11-26
I just bought this lens as "new, old stock". I don't own any Canon L lenses, however, I took a bunch of test shots with this lens, my Canon 50/1.8 and my Canon 28-135/3.5-5.6. The test shot was framed the same for each focal length (50, 70, 100, 135, and 200mm).
The Sigma 70-200 EX APO was as sharp or sharper than the 50/1.8 prime at all aperatures and all focal lengths and much sharper than the 28-135/3.5-5.6 until the 28-135 was stopped down to f8.
The long end (200mm) of this lens was the softest. At f2.8 it was noticably soft (same as the 50/1.8 af f2.8), f4 was reasonably sharp and by f5.6 it is as sharp as it gets in all the other focal lengths and aperatures.
I shot portraits with it this on my 350D this weekend and all of the pictures came out perfect. The focus was fast. The colors and contrast were perfect.
The price performance of this lens is unbeatable. I would recommend this lens for anyone who wants professional results without the cost of the Canon L glass.
Super lens for the money.......2005-04-22
I bought this lens shortly after buying my Canon 20d. Given the weather in Moscow, wasn't able to give it a real trial. First impressions were not exciting. A few weekends ago, I went "candid hunting" in Red Square. With a polarizer attached, this lens blew me away. The boken was nice and the lens seemed sharp enough. I compare it favoribly to my 100-400 canon L lens. If you are looking for a fast reasonably priced high quality zoom in this range, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to you. Of course I would rather have the Canon L with IS, but for the money, I am pleased with the lens.
Average lens for an average price..........2004-11-10
Let me start by saying that the lens looks very nice. It's build quality seems ok. The zoom ring has a little play to it when zoomed out and there is a little play when attached to my Canon 20D. The lens is not very sharp at f/4 or 2.8, but you can get by with sharpening in photoshop. I also bought a Sigma 1.4x comverter and I have to shoot at f/8 to get a sharp image. The focus is very quiet but is not that fast. It searches a lot and seems to focus just behind fast moving subjects. I switched over from Nikon and I didn't have a ton of money to buy all of the Canon EF lenses. If you have the extra money buy the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8. I'm sure it's focus is right on and is tack sharp. But if you're on a budget like me you'll have to settle for the Sigma. You always get what you pay for and I feel that I should shelled out the extra money for the Canon. I hope this will save a few people the mistake that I made.
Great Lens/Great Price. Don't hesitate to consider this lens.......2001-12-31

I have owned this lens for about a year now in the Canon EOS mount. When first considering this lens, I debated over buying it or the more expensive Canon version. After reading numerous reviews, it was obvious that many other users felt this to be a great lens, comparable to Canon's, but at a much lower cost. So, I decided to get the Sigma version. I have never been sorry for that decision.
I should note that I have used both this lens and the Canon equivalent, so comparisons can be drawn from this. I have not used any comparable Nikon or other lenses in this focal range.
This lens allows for great versatility. There are numerous scenarios in which this lens performs well. Below are just a few.
Positives
1) The 2.8 aperture allows for great low light photography, or dusk/dawn outdoor photos
2) In the 85-135mm range, the constant 2.8 aperture makes this a very good portrait lens; throwing the background out of focus and making the subject stand out.
3) With the Sigma 2x APO teleconverter, this lens becomes a very nice 140-400mm 5.6. It will still autofocus with all Canon EOS bodies, and produces sharp photos despite the 2X converter.
4) High Speed focusing motor, rivals Canon's USM technology
5) APO, low dispersion glass produces top quality images with clear, contrasty images
6) Full time manual focus
7) Tripod mount is included, something that Canon will make you pay for...
8) Very sturdy lens design, solidly constructed
Negatives
1) Tends to hunt just slightly more than the Canon Version. This is easily overcome with full time manual focus
2) When the hood is attached in the "storage" position (reversed on the end of the lens) the full time manual focus ring is hard to manipulate
3) HSM is just slightly slower than USM (Canon's ultrasonic focusing technology)
4) Lens is heavy, but so are all similar lenses. I suggest a monopod if prolonged use is expected
...
Sigma also has a new 100-300mm F4 lens that is similar in quality and design to this 70-200mm version. If you tend to stay at the longer focal lengths and don't need the extra 2.8 f stop, then I would suggest looking into the 100-300 F4 lens that is new to the market.
Overall, I am very happy with the performance of this lens. In my opinion it is well worth the price tag and with the money you save over the Canon version can be spent it in other areas. I used the extra savings to purchase the 2X teleconverter and a few 77mm filters.
...Thanks for your time...

Outstanding Lens.......2007-08-28
I have owned this lens of a few months now and could not be any more happier. The only other 70-200mm lens I would get would be the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS. Definitely a keeper.
Sigma APO 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras.......2007-04-11
I am very happy with this lens. I am by no means a professional and couldn't justify the cost of the comparable Canon lens, but I am glad I bought this, and so far have been very happy with the picures and the performance
Exceeds Expectations.......2006-12-05
After 2 years of struggling to take nightime soccer pictures with an old Sony 5MB with 1.7x magnifier lens, I took the leap to get a new camera (Canon Rebel XTi) and this lens, based on significant research on internet. This lens was billed as being able to deliver good low-light sports pictures, without spending $1,600 on the Canon 70-200 F2.8 "white" lens.
I'm pleased to report that this lens performed outstanding. I was still learning on the camera/focusing, but I went with manual settings on the camera (1/125, ISO 1600, F2.8) and the pictures were awesome. Of course some were blurry as I swung the lens from side to side, but when I picked a spot and focused, waiting for the action to come into the spot, the pictures were great. My wife commented that I should have got this 2 years ago. I would highly recommend this lens.
Could not be happier with this Sigma Lense.......2006-08-07
I bought this lense for my new Canon 20D because I did not want to spend $1200 on the Canon equivalent and was not enthusiastic about walking around with the white "you must be a professional photographer" Canon lense. I could not be happier with its performance. I have used it indoors at volleyball tournaments and dance competitions (very low light), and outdoors at baseball games. I've even seen it on the official photographer's camera at some events! I did end up buying a monopod because it is not the lightest lense, but what wonderful pictures it has produced. Some have even commented that my photos are better than the professional ones offered at the event.
I love Canon, so I don't have anything against their L-Series lenses. I know they are worth the money for those that have it. But for those of us that are simple "weekend warriors", this Sigma lense is a prince!
Don't be tempted by the low price.......2006-02-14
I made the mistake of trying to save money when I switched from Nikon to Canon. I bought this and Sigma's 17-35 f/2.8-4 DG EX while building my new system. I ended up selling my Sigma lenses to buy a Canon 17-40 f/4 L and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L lens. Sigma lenses are very tempting because they cost much less then Canon or Nikon lenses. Unfortunately they are cheaper for a reason. The images produced are much softer, the lens itself is not as sturdy, and it doesn't focus as fast. If you have to go bargain basement they are not that bad. They are really just expensive consumer lenses not cheap pro lenses. If you are trying to work as a professional you have to go with brand name lenses. They don't cost more just because of the name on the lens, there are major performance benefits.
