Kodak Professional High Speed Infrared Film is a high-speed film with moderately high contrast, sensitive to light and radiant energy to 900 nanometers (nm) in wavelength. It is useful for haze penetration and for special effects in commercial, architectural, fine art, and landscape photography. With development variations, you can use this film for scientific, medical, aerial photography, and document copying. You can also use it for photomicrography, photomechanical, and remote-sensing applications.

The Granddaddy of All Black and White Infrared Films .......2007-09-17
If you're gonna shoot IR, this is the film to use. Period. Why? It's hands down the most IR sensitive, and therefore it has the strongest IR effect. It also has the highest speed (400 ISO) but is also rather grainy. Unlike other IR films it doesn't have anti-halation backing. This results in surreal halos around highlights.
Others "emulate" infrared - and I think perhaps compromised their product to make it easier to work with by reducing IR sensitivity, however, Kodak's HIE is "the real deal". It is also the hardest to use - it must be loaded/unloaded in complete darkness, is "temperamental" in terms of development, and the most difficult to "visualize" when using. You just can't predict (at least I can't) with a lot of accuracy what any given frame of this film will give you. But - every roll is full of disappointments and also wonderful surprises.
Bottom line - the others I've used/am familiar with are "toys". HIE is the "real deal". You can Photoshop images to "look like" IR. Close but no cigar. Nothing looks like HIE - it's a beautiful brilliant film, which I hope never goes away.
