Disappointing.......2007-12-30
I am very disappointed with this.
It seems there are dozens of companies making digital photo frames, but no one making the small pocket version that I need. This seemed to be the only one so I bought it.
It is very slow, taking a full eight seconds for each image to come up. It does not read ahead to the next image at all. Still, since it is the only choice available I could live with being very slow. What I can't live with is the battery life of 10 to 15 minutes. At first I thought I had gotten bad batteries when it faded while my wife was learning to operate it when she opened it at Christmas. But the next day it ran out again when she was showing her baby pictures to a group of co-workers. It was the very first time she had shown it to anyone and couldn't have been more than 10 minutes total running time on new batteries. We bought batteries again, a different kind this time from a different source and got the same results.
I wish I had my money back.

This product was not as good as the Kodak easyshare viewer. The battery life was very poor. The pictures were slow to come up on the screen. This product was returned and I bought the Kodak, which was 100 times better. It also came with a case.
PhotoShare 2.4" Digital Photo Album.......2007-06-12
The clarity of the pictures is not all that great, but the price is cheap compared to the others so I didn't expect super-sharp images. It's a great replacement for those plastic photo albums that get torn up in your purse so easily. I use it to show pictures of my kids/family. For the price, you can't beat it.

My husband is away (military) and I was looking for the perfect, small but clear, pictures for him. I didn't care about the frame, only the small white digital system. I was hesitant, as my MIL has a digital keychain and the picture quality is horrible. I was pleasantly surprised at the picture quality and the ease of both looking at pictures already on an SD card and transferring pictures from the computer. I love that I can use either batteries or the included plug. Everything was soooo easy that I did not even need to read the instructions to begin. I also purchased the small case to put this in for travel as the album is just an added extra for later. This is the best investment for anyone looking for something very small and portable. Perfect to send a military loved one lots of pictures to keep them involved no matter how far away they are! Then, when he comes home, it's great for a portable album to carry anywhere.
Great gift for Grandparent, but budget for a memory stick .......2007-01-10
We originally were very interested in getting the keychain, but were turned off by the following:
1. The poor reviews of the display quality
2. The small screen size
3. How the keys would damage the keychain over time
We decided to buy the digital photo album and it came within days of ordering. We loaded the pictures before giving it to my son's grandmother.
We are happy with the following:
1. Picture quality
2. The screen is larger
3. The price of the case was reasonable less than $10.
4. It is easy to load photos and simply to use, good features when giving it to people who are NOT very handy with electronics.
We spent $20 more to buy this item, it seems so reasonable compared to the keychain. What they don't specifically tell you is that this unit comes with NO memory. The extra $20 we spent over the keychain ends up being about $45 more when you have to factor in buying a memory stick. I was wondering why the keychain tells you how many picture it can hold and this one doesn't.

What a disappointment..........2007-12-18
I purchased this product for my parents so that they could display pictures of their grandchildren as well as take them with them as they travel quite a bit. It sounded like a great idea.
I loaded the memory stick (which had to be later extracted with pliers), and to my dismay, the photo quality was dismal. It looked like digital photography 10 years ago, before the megapixel cameras. It is nothing I would feel proud to give as a gift.
In addition, to scroll from one picture to the next took several seconds. The plastic frame that was included (which the unit can be placed into for desktop viewing) was made of the cheapest plastic imaginable.
Don't waste your money! Young children might find it amusing, but most adults would be disappointed. There are many other very fine photo frames with excellent quality in this price range.
Sometimes novelty comes with a price, in this case, loss of quality.
OK for image quality.......2007-12-17
First, the good news
I read some of the suggestions offered for preparing pictures for display on the screen and was not completely satisfied with the results--images were either cropped slightly, or off center, and I could never get their width "just right" making them appear stretched. After a lot of trial and error I found the latest version of this product (purchased 12-2007) processes/displays images best if their resolution is 1600x960. Without touchup this distorts pictures but I have outlined a few steps to "preprocess" images for display. They appear surprisingly sharp using this method but as they say, "Your mileage may vary". I have the steps down to the point where it takes just a few seconds a picture to get them "right".
For 4:3 (regular photos)
Resize picture to 1200x900
Add border of 250 pixels on each side. Total image size should now be 1700x900. If the picture is taller than it is wide, then resize it to 900 pixels high and make sure aspect ratio is on for the resize. The picture width may vary so be sure to "pad the image" with an equal number of pixels on each side, so the final result before the next step is an image that's 1700x900 pixels.
Resize to 1600x960 (make sure maintain aspect ratio is off if an option in your graphics program) and save to your memory card (don't overwrite your original on your PC).

For 16:9 (landscape photos)
Resize the picture to 1700 pixels wide (make sure maintain aspect ratio is on for this step).
Crop to 1700x900.
Resize to 1600x960 (make sure maintain aspect ratio is off if an option in your graphics program).
Configure the photoshare to display pictures in 16:9 format (was my default setting).
This will keep the image from appearing stretched and will keep the unit from cropping any portion of the picture. My images are perfectly centered on the unit and fill all available display space when a landscape picture is displayed. I can mix and match portrait and landscape pictures in the same slide show this way as well.
Some gripes I have about the unit. As already stated, the power cord falls out easily. Also, the frame for storing the unit is of really cheap design and allows no access to the power button, and the clips on the back cover won't stay in place. In fact, one popped off which sent me on a search thru my carpeting. In addition, if someone picks up the frame and holds it "upside down" by accident, the unit slides within the frame and ejects the SD card. A small piece of foam between the top edge of the unit and the frame helps keep this from happening--I just place it in there before securing the frame and put some scotch tape on to help accomplish what the clips should do.
It's also pretty cheap that a proprietary battery technology is used.
Also, the unit gets quite hot.
The price is misleading--fine print on the box says a memory card must be purchased separately--the unit has no onboard memory of its own. However I picked up a 2GB SD card for $15 which at my suggested resolution can hold about 4 thousand images.
A plus is Windows 98 support. Quite a few of my images are stored on an old Windows 98 machine. The unit, when plugged into the USB port, appears as another drive which is nice.
My only concern digging into some of the reviews is whether the LCD backlight will be reliable. It concerns me that it may burn out and reports to that effect, regardless of the price, show unacceptable quality for such a product.
My overall summary is if the unit stays reliable, the picture display using my method of resizing certainly isn't poor and is the best of the units I've seen in this price range. I could have found better I suppose and I am sure there's some units intelligent enough to scale pictures according to their pixel size and ratios, but this works and my images look good now, which is what counts. As far as no access to the power is concerned when in the frame, I turn the unit on and off from a power strip so it remains plugged in and secure.
Hope this review helps. As I said, picture quality is what made me keep this unit and I hope it works for the long haul.
Yup, it died........2007-12-02
I received this as a gift last Xmas. After 6 months, it died - or at least developed serious problems. The screen took on a reddish tone, there were horizontal lines running across the right side of the screen and the picture would flicker on and off. Upon looking for the manufacturer's contact info, I came across these reviews on Amazon. Believe me, they are accurate. Do not buy this item, because your luck will eventually run out and it will die on you too.
Very poor quality--would not waste money on this item.......2007-10-19
This frame is of very poor quality. Ours lasted for five months, which seems to be longer than most, before it died. The LED has burned out and the pictures are no longer visible. When I called the company, the rep told me that the frame should not be left on for longer than eight hours at a time in order for the unit to cool down and prolong the life of the LED. When I noted that this information was not available in the packaging, he readily agreed. He also agreed to take the item back and send a new one. I don't think it's worth the shipping to get another one of these frames. I would rate this frame at less than one star if I could.
Poor LCD Quality.......2007-09-29
We used this as a digital picture frame, (had to buy the frame separately), and wanted to use it as a portable storage album (bought the battery separately), and then the LCD Burned out after having it for only 8 months.
DO NOT BUY THIS! The quality is not there and you can't even use this right out of the box. You have to buy a memory card just to use it with the power cord.
Read the other reviews, this LCD will not last a year when used as a digital picture frame.

I've never ordered anything and been this disappointed. I ordered two of these and both didn't work. I contacted the company's tech support and they told me to send it back and they will replace it. I tried contacting Ritz Camera where I purchased the item and they refused to give me a refund. I am now stuck dealing with this company that has horrible customer support. I will never buy another product from this company again.
Poor picture, poor battery, dead after a month.......2007-02-09
My wife got this for me for Christmas. I was thrilled and thought it was a great idea. I charged the device and transferred pictures to it. I work in technology, so I agree with many of the other reviewers that the software is terrible -- to delete any photos, you have to delete them from the device, not the software. Image quality is OK, but not good enough to be "sharing" with people. And after a few days of sorting through pictures and transferring and deleting them, it got a bit old.
Other than looking at it "straight-on", nobody on either side of you can see the image. It's back-lit, which is fine...but it doesn't help much.
Unfortunately, the battery didn't last all that long. The device refused to charge after about two months, and eventually it died altogether. The only way to make the unit work was to plug in the USB cable; the battery would not charge. So I contacted "support" and got a basic run-around, telling me that you "shouldn't charge the battery for more than 2-3 hours" at a time, and that I could request an RMA to return it for replacement. Warranty is no good, and it can't be returned.
I'm holding onto it because I'll probably take it apart and use the internal parts to build a desktop "photocube", so it can run off the USB cable.
But I agree with others that -- even if this worked longer than 2 months -- it's just a novelty that gets tedious quickly.
Identical to device sold under the "Argus" brand.......2007-01-16
This keychain photo viewer sold by a company called "Smartparts" is identical to one sold by "Argus." Neither company manufactures the device nor do they offer a shred of tech support. You buy this, you're on your own. You seem to be able to find the Argus one a little cheaper... though they do mar the front of it with a big, black imprint of their logo.
In any case, this thing is maybe worth $20 as a novelty. Don't pay more. Image quality is mediocre and the software, while functional, is stunningly primitive. If you can pick it up cheap and approach it with low expectations, it's a kind of cute gizmo. But don't give yourself agita by overpaying for an obsolete little toy. Check the bargain bins for this thing, or just wait for the next generation device.

Smatparts Digital Keychain does not last.......2007-01-11
The battery does not hold up. After 10 months it would not work at all. I thought it was the battery. Emailed support and was told the battery is not replaceable. I found one and changed it out myself. The unit was just dead. Warranty is 60 days.

Delivers exactly what is promised but not a speck more. Once one figures it out, its very easy to use. However, the "user manual" is useless. Picture quality is mediocre. Good value, but don't epect too much.

Better than I expected.......2007-01-16
We read all of the bad reviews other people wrote about Ceiva but went ahead and purchased it anyway. The fact is that there is nothing else out there so perfectly suited to non-computer people. Because they live in a rural area, the dial up solution is excellant for them. Wireless is just not an option.
My folks didn't think they would like it (because they didn't understand it) but now that they have had the unit for a few weeks - they are are really excited. I set up their account for them and took care of inviting all of my siblings, children, neices and nephews to send pictures and the participation has been great. We had no difficulty setting the unit up and no problems with the connection.

We got this for an elderly grandmother and it has been a really big hit from her perspective. The Web site allows the main account to invite several "buddies" to upload pictures for free. This is a great means of getting Grandma photos from out of town family members - the day after they are uploaded. We've also scanned old family photos from the 1950's and subscribed to Ceiva's "channels" for calendar and daily weather forecast.
Positives:
+Multiple families can send photos with 1 paid subscription.
+A really good concept for a non-technical user.
+You can add text to images after uploading (i.e. 'Mimi, Christmas 1968').
+Supports pulse dialing (for Grandma's 'old school' phone).
Negatives:
-Weak support of VOIP/Vonage (for my 'new school' phone).
-Contrast and resolution could be described as 'mediocre' at best. (Fortunately Grandma is not that discriminating.)
-Web site is a little confusing at first.
Conclusion:
If you are looking at this for specs or technology, look elsewhere. If you take the time to keep it updated, your grandmother will thank you.

I would give this FIVE stars, but ONLY FOR CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES.
Don't buy it for your own home! It is PERFECT if you have a lonely, elderly relative who shies away from computers & email but likes to see photos of her grandchildren. That's where it shines. This enhances your contact with a loved one if you can't be there daily. Otherwise, FORGET IT. Great for a senior care or hospital patient (unless they have an incompatible phone system.)
Recognize that you'll be paying $10 per month "forever" or else you lose the ability to change the 30 photos. You'll have to take digital photos and upload fresh ones frequently--or else this will be pointless.
They break, so you'll need an extended warrantee. Mine lasted just over a year, and the replacement seems to have a slight contrast problem on the left side--frustrating but not quite bad enough to return again.
I do believe the other reviewers who had problems, but my experience has been very positive. They've treated me very well in 2006, and the product did exactly what was needed. A bit of a 'crap shoot.'
I recommend setting the interval between photos to the maximum, 2 hours. I'd set it to 48 hours if I could. Set it too fast, and after half a day they will think, "I've already seen that slide show. I'm done with this contraption." You want them to think of it like a static photo on the wall that is changed daily--then its a miracle.
For most people, DON'T buy this. But for that lonely, isolated, elderly person of suitable temperment, it might be a "gift from heaven."
Worst digital frame available and a TERRIBLE gift idea........2006-09-06
First of all you can't simply put in a memory card or stick. You have to connect this thing to a phone line. Yeah that'll look nice on mom's wall.
Then, you have to subscribe to a pay service to use the product. Stop paying and you can't use it any more. Buying this product is really more like renting it. If you give it to someone either they have to pay that rent or you do.
I understand that Ceiva is dreaming of a continuous revenue stream, but I can't think of a single reason to buy this over the many digital frames that do not require a monthly fee.

A Decent Digital Keychain.......2007-12-30
Purchased as a Christmas present I found the Digital Foci pocket album easy to use. The contrast display in the LCD could be a bit better but it works. I believe most people are used to high resolution displays now and expect that same display when these types of products are purchased. The software is decent and transferring pictures is simple enough. I do wish it showed a thumbnail view of the picture prior to transferring, instead of having to click on each individual file name. I have 1000's of pictures and I don't name each and every one. Good display, interfaces lacking.......2007-12-29
The display of this keychain is pretty nice for its size. It looks like there is limited color depth available, but the images end up looking nice all the same. The menu interface on the keychain is a little hard to use because it just has the menu button and forward/back buttons. Also, you have to use the provided software, which means you must have Windows. It would be better if it allowed straight transfer of images instead of forcing you to use the software. The software itself lacks polish, windows can't always be resized. Again, this device would be great if users could bypass having to use the included software to load images.

I would love to review and rate this digital keychain, but unfortunately because I made the mistake of ordering it from Adorama Camera, I never actually received it. My only advice here is DO NOT ORDER FROM ADORAMA. If you want this particular digital keychain, save yourself the headache and find it somewhere else. I placed the order on 12/11 with an estimated delivery date of 12/15 (for a Christmas present). I never received the order and Adorama has yet to respond to my phone calls or 3 emails. ADORAMA CAMERA is the perfect example of CUSTOMER NO-SERVICE!!!
True Story on Pocket Viewer.......2007-12-26
OK, I got one of these for xmas. Kind of neat but I know others who are having trouble. First of all the resolution is why I gave it 4 stars not 5. The resolution could be better its like a cell phone as other reviews have stated. The real problem here is the directions. They are poorly written. When moving a picture to the menu to then load it into your pocket viewer is where all the troubles seem to start. The directions seem to just stop at that point. So read several times and you'll get it. There's a button in the upper right hand corner of the screen you need to click on called "synchronize" you must click on it to load the selected picture into your viewer. This info is for Windows users. Mac is different and I have no knowledge of it. After you get the hang of it its a kind of a neat item to carry to show others pictures of the family, home, kids etc. Hope this helps. Also charging through the AC adapter is much faster then the USB port on your computer. It comes with stuff to do either one you choose.

The software was easy to use and the keychain does hold a high number of pictures. The slide-show option is very handy. The picture resolution is equivalent to a cell-phone, so do not get your hopes up. If the resolution was a little bit better, I would give five stars.

Got one of these for Christmas. The actual screen size is about 2/3 the size of what they show on their packaging and TV ads. The screen is so small there is literally no detail in the pictures. Very disappointed.

Crummy Display.......2007-12-23
My wife and I recieved this as a gift to display pictures of our son. The display size is one thing and is expected to be small but the screen brightness and image quality are very bad. I would not reccomend buying this product.

With the recent arrival of our first grandchild I purchased for my wife this Christmas the Photoco 7XL Digital Photo Album and Frame. For the price we paid we received about what we expected, about average in its features and manufacture, but below average in certain areas.
The frame is a very low-grade plastic, so if you're looking for something to display on the mantle look elsewhere. New Grandma wanted to be able to carry the viewer in her purse so she could share photos of our new little girl. We purchased the leather case after presenting the 7XL on Christmas to safeguard it.
We also purchased a couple of unanticipated items, a Li-ion battery and a memory stick. The packaging and marketing materials are indeed misleading; this is a portable player but all that is included is an AC adapter. It was only after purchase and presentation that we discovered the need for a special Li-ion battery, and that AA or AAA batteries were not the power source when this device was mobile.
And while marketing materials lead one to conclude there's memory aboard the device, something along the lines of uploading photo files from one's computer to the 7XL, there is no such memory. That's only available with an additional flash memory device, several of which are compatible with the device.
We've not yet discovered how to show the photos in the sequence that we would like it to display. Selecting the type of play, random or otherwise, does not seem to have an effect on how the images are shown.
In Slideshow Music mode it appears impossible to show a selected folder of images with the music one loads onto the card or stick that contains the photo files. The best we can figure, when selecting Slideshow Music on the remote control all photos are shown in the sequence the 7XL chooses, along with music in the order it chooses to play these.
The Owner's Manual, like so many today, is at best poor. Online support is nothing more than a phone number and email address, with no better documentation to be found. At least Customer Support responds quickly, but their response to our question was merely to say the device could not do what one would think it would: in the calendar function, the device displays a calendar, along with the current date and time -- as well as some sort of blurry image in a sort of framed area in the upper left corner of the display. One would think changing whatever that image is with a personal photo would be fairly straightforward, as well as a nice feature. Who would want to display a cheezy calendar with some impersonal, indistinguishable graphic instead of a photo of a loved one? Apparently the folks at Photoco.
The manual also says charging the optional Li-ion battery with the AC adapter first displays a red indicator that turns to green when the battery is charged. Nope. The red indicator dims and then goes out.
Given this is a portable device, add the battery and raise the price somewhat. Replace the plastic frame with a nice, affordable protective case. Allow music to accompany photos of one's choosing and in sequence of the user's choice. And for Pete's sake, allow the customer to place a personal photo on the calendar page or get rid of the calendar.
For the price, the 7XL Digital Photo Album is, well, okay. Photoco could do much better and must if it expects repeat business.
Great Grandparent Gift.......2007-12-27
I bought this for my father-in-law and my mother for Christmas presents this year. The viewer is great, very good size for "senior" eyes. Picture quality is as good as any digitial frame I've seen. The plastic frame it comes with is pretty cheap - if you are looking to use it as a frame I wouldn't go with this one.
My intention was for them to be able to carry the viewer around with them to show off the grandkids so I purchased the matching leather cases for both and it makes a world of difference. A must have. As cheap as the frame is that's how great the leather case is.
Maybe I just didn't see it but I didn't realize when I ordered it that it required a special battery that is sold seperately. Fortunately I was able to order them in time for Christmas. I did find them in a pretty wide variety of price ranges even here on Amazon. I ordered the cheaper one and it has worked fine. They are made by the same manufacture as the viewer so I don't think there are really any differences in the batteries only the retailers.
The viewer worked great but I did have a bit of a challenge getting it to show the pictures in the sequence I wanted it to. I loaded a 2 Gig SD card with over 200 pictures that were the best of the shots I had taken during the year. Since it was a year in review sort of thing I wanted them to come up in order. It took several tries and 2 calls to their customer support but I finally figured out that I had to use a batch processor to write the files directly to the card - renaming them ### as they went... just changing the file names to ### and copying them over to the card didn't work. Their support guy was pretty nice though. He admitted the reading of files names needed work.

Purchased this item for my father's birthday. He loves it! Besides for needing some assistance in getting his pics to display he has had no problems. He would admit the trouble is more because he is not tech savvy than anything else. No complaints about this product.
