there is a review that makes it seam like you have to leave on the shade it snaps off if you like and it only takes seconds to do this. the shade comes off and you still have the glass that will protect your cam
i think a great buy for the price and the shade make it much nicer to view opics in the sun
oh the one thing i did not like is that the unit does not sit snug on the bottom of the cam, every now and again u need to push it in a bit
but all in all a great buy
Canon XTi Pop Up Shade.......2007-08-24
Very happy with the way the shade works and mounts.
It goes right over all the control buttons, and duplicates the same buttons on the shade frame. Very nice addition to your camera equipment for only $30.
Truly horrible product, does not work with the camera, ruins my XTi!.......2007-05-15
I have a 20D and just got the Rebel XTi. I was worried about scratching the much larger XTi screen, and thought it would be worth the high price to protect it with this product. In the end, this ended up being the worst accessory I have ever used. I would highly recommend NOT buying this.
My reasons:
1) The protector makes the screen dimmer in all lighting conditions, harder to see.
2) It blocks the CF write light - the light that blinks red when it is writing a picture to the memory card, is now useless.
3) You can't see any of the aperature or time value settings unless the shade is flipped up.
4) If you need to take a quick picture with the shade up, it's impossible to close the shade quickly. Because the shade is hinged upward (perpendicular to your eye), this resulted in me jamming the plastic screen INTO MY EYE accidentally, whenever I rushed to take a quick (important) picture. It's impossible to take a picture with the shade up if you want to keep your eye. And with the shade down, you don't know your settings (see reason #3 above).
5) And finally, the *BIGGEST FLAW* - The OVERLAY BUTTONS that are part of the shade do NOT come into contact with the camera body! Buttons don't work! This is a design flaw - it is attached to the camera only at the very top point, the eyepiece. All of the buttons that it overlays are on the lower right. Since it is hinged at the top, the bottom-right OVERLAY BUTTONS ARE NOT FLUSH AGAINST THE FACTORY BUTTONS. This means you can NOT USE THE DIRECTIONAL BUTTONS (or ISO, AF, WB, and SET). The only way to use the buttons is to push down on the lower right of the shade with high pressure with one hand, while trying to push the buttons with your other hand. I almost dropped the camera doing this.
6) The plastic feels cheap, doesn't fit the camera perfectly, and has cheap looking logos all over it.
Summary: My screen is safe and covered in shade, but my eye is getting poked out, I am almost dropping the camera while pushing the buttons, and I can't see my Av and Tv settings. I am throwing this away and getting regular CHEAP screen protectors instead.
Conclusion: If you really need a pop-up shade for some crazy reason, get the non-professional version - the cheaper one without the horrible buttons.
Almost Perfect.......2007-03-09
So Far I've been very pleased with this product. It fits well on my XTi and provides lots of protection to the LCD screen and camera back (main reason I purchased it). The shade is effective for shooting in the middle of the day, unfortunately it does get in the way sometimes when I want to see the preview that appears right after my shot. In advanced modes, you may be slowed down by need to open the shade to check your exposure and then closing the shade to be able to look through the viewfinder again. Luckily, the shade can be removed if needed. Overall I'm pretty please with it.

The pop up shild is a nice idea but after getting the unit installed I found that it was not the best setup for me. It also puts a lot on the eye piece. May have coused a stress crack to my D-50 Nikon. Not something I would recommend.

Does exactly what it's supposed to........2007-02-22
It's great for reviewing photos in sunlight. It also protects the screen.
The only negative is that when it's open, I can't use the viewfinder to take pictures.
Now I leave it closed while shooting.

Overall it's a good product. I shoot football, soccer, and baseball and this helps for a quick review. The only problem I have is the eye peice and the lcd cover are different parts and sometimes they come loose/fall off.
