4 out of 5 stars Great all around lens for Pentax K mount.......2007-08-23

I purchased this lens for traveling with my Pentax digital bodies. It's a great alternative to carrying a bunch of lenses when traveling. The trade off for the versatility is the mecahanics at times. Instead of being a master on one focal range, it's the jack of all trades. It has a very difficult time focusing quickly, especially with a filter on the lens. AF is slow on this lens.

      4 out of 5 stars good value.......2007-07-06

Got this lense for my K100D. The price seems right and the pictures look good enough for me. No problem so far other than the telephoto is a bit tight.

4 out of 5 stars My review of the Tamron Autofocus Aspherical Lens.......2007-01-10

I am very happy with this product. Shortly after receiving the lens I used it on a road trip from Anchorage to Valdez. The temperatures were in the negatives, but the skies were clear and the views gorgeous. The lense worked wonderfully and I have fantastic pictures of my family and scenery to prove it. This lense is my general lense of choice for most of my photography. For someone on a budget like myself, this was the perfect lense.

5 out of 5 stars great everyday lens.......2007-05-13

I'm a novice camera user, I have the canon XTI. This lens works better than the lens that came with the camera. Great everyday lens. I used the lens at zion national park in Utah, the pictures were fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars BEST BUY FOR THE MONEY.......2007-04-17

I got mine for 85$ as new, for use with my Sony A100 Alpha, therefore, i can only speak out how this Tamron performs on my A100 only, 1st it very light, small, well build, got internal focus, comes with petal hood. Well! you all know that Sony A100 has build in image stabilization in body, so all lenses will be stabilized with what so call Super steady shot from Sony. For that reason this Tamron lens works well with A100, it gives me nice colors, neutral, contrast, and sharp at all ranges. But the sharpest i found is between the 50-150mm step down to f8-11. at 200mm i found a light purple fringes. Its small and compact fits well with my Sony body too.Filter size is 62mm. It has zoom lock so you can lock your zoom when shooting downward or upward. Metal mount made in Japan. It is a real bargain for those who wants good images without sacrified your wallet. Not all Tamron lenses are great, but so is the other brands!. I personally got many, many soft lenses from Canon and Nikon in my life. For that reason i switched to Sony.
In all, im very happy with mine, for the price i wont complain at all, its an everyday lens..i also got a Sony R1 which has a zeiss lens with real 24-120mm at f2.8.Both together i got myself a great combo for all shooting.
IF you found this lens dont work for other camera bodies, its not my fault. You should buy Sony A100.

3 out of 5 stars Got a "pretty good" one on the second try. Poor quality control.......2006-10-02

I recently bought a Canon EOS Rebel XT digital SLR, intending to use some Sigma lenses I had for my old EOS 630, and was disappointed to find they wouldn't work on the Rebel and couldn't be upgraded. I picked up a couple of used Canon lenses which covered the range I needed, but still missed the versatility of my old Sigma 28-200mm.

I have had good luck with Tamron lenses in the past, and the reviews looked good, so I bought a new Tamron 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6 XR lens, thinking it would be an equivalent replacement for the old Sigma.

The first tryout of the lens was extremely disappointing. The first images shot in the back yard were soft, edge definition was fuzzy, and contrast was muddy. To give the lens a second chance, I took it out for a nature photo session, running the gamut from macro shots of flowers to landscapes, over the full range of f/stops and zoom positions. Again, the images were poor, exhibiting chromatic aberration, flare, and coma, with no improvement with reduced f/stops. I hadn't seen a lens this bad since a Vivitar 180mm telephoto I had in the 1970's.

Thinking that no one would intentionally manufacture a lens this poor, I returned it as defective, for exchange for another. The replacement arrived, and its performance confirmed that the first one was defective.

While the replacement lens performs acceptably, it isn't up to the quality level of my old Sigma 28-200, or the Canon 35-135mm zoom I recently bought used (but it probably is as good as the 18-55mm zoom that came with the Rebel XT). It exhibits some softness at object edges, but improves at smaller apertures. I'm impressed with the lack of flare, even with no hood and shooting toward a bright overcast sky. After some moderate sharpening in Photoshop most images are pretty good.

So my conclusion from all this is:

There's apparently some quality control issues with Tamron's Chinese assembly facility. If you buy one and it performs poorly, try another before giving up on it.

The lens I finally got is "pretty good" but not terrific. It's adequate for casual use, but I'm keeping the Canon zoom, and saving up for a Canon macro lens for the serious stuff.

The MSR price for this lens is ridiculous, and the "street price" is kind of high for what you get.

I'd buy Tamron again, but not without there being a return policy from the seller.

5 out of 5 stars This is all you need for everyday or travel.......2006-05-12

The 28-200 XR tamron lens is the only one you'll need for every day shots. I bought a rebel XT to take pics of my infant son. The 2 lenses that came with it 18-55 and a 70-300 zoom lense, where good, but who has time to switch chasing the kids around. So far I have taken some unbelievable pics with this lense. Dont hesitate to buy one, just make sure you look around for the best price. I got mine for under $[...].

4 out of 5 stars sharp stopped down.......2005-11-14

Poor built with difficult stiff zomming. not truely 200, more like 160. reasonable fast and accurate focusing. soft wide open, but surprizingly sharp one stop down. bear in mind that is 5.6 at wide end, and around 7 at tele. very small. In good lighting, excellent lens for the money
