Could not get it to work.......2007-12-12
Maybe it is just me, but I could not get a DVD to play on this. I set it up per the instructions on a TV with built-in VHS player (is this the problem?)
Although the DVD player indicated it was running, the TV picture stayed on the selected local TV channel.
Also, the DVD door opens only with some manual (ie fingers) maneuvering; the button to open/close does not work smoothly.
Maybe this would work on another set. Anyway, I am willing to try again if anyone has a good suggestion. I assumed that it would play a region 1 DVD, and that it is not set to something else.

This was purchased to replace our previous expensive DVD player that was a disaster. So we purposely chose a "cheap" player this time. I didn't want to waste money on another expensive piece of junk. (Our previous model was a different brand.)
Amazingly this one has turned out to be great. It is about as simple as it gets. And very inexpensive. It also plays everything we put in it. Audio CD's, MP3's, DVD, video CD's, etc... Not a lot of bells and whistles but does the basics without flaw. And in the end, when you pop in a DVD, what you really want to do is watch the movie, right? This machine will take care of that job just fine thank you. Inexpensive, reliable, plays virtually everything. What more could you ask for?

The remote control doesnt have a eject button. so u have to go to the dvd player, press the button and then put the disk in and then push the button on the machine again. it is a con, and i hope philips will fix it for their future models based on this prototype. overall, good quality, nice looking metallic color. i like it.

umm, great basic player..i have the 5960 atm, and i like it much better, hdmi, etc...but if you want to open the door of the player with the remote..just hold the stop button for like 5 seconds

What a nice find. It is easily made multi region (see other reviews). The DVD tray can be controlled with the remote, also. To open or close the DVD tray with the remote, hold down the STOP button for 3 or 4 seconds. This player is a very good bargain when you can find it in the $30 range. Progressive scan is a great feature. It's cheap and it works.

Bearing in mind this is a very cheap product, I have found it works very well indeed with excellent picture clarity
NON-REGIONAL PLAYING: One of the reasons for buying this product is the fact that it claims to be able to play non-regional DVDs.
However, the manufacturer's manual's instructions for making the player non-regional did nothing but show an error message.
I emailed the manufacturer, received an email back requesting the error message I received when I tried to program it for non-regional playing. I emailed back the information they requested and never heard from them.
I did not follow up because I went back into the Amazon site and hunted around for reviews and to hopefully find some feedback on the non-regional playing aspect of this DVD player.
Several reviewers gave instructions for programming the DVD to be non-regional; some worked for some people, but did not work for others; however one of the reviewers' instructions worked for my DVD player, and now I can play any DVD without having to reprogram it at all.
I am very grateful to the reviewers who took their time to impart and share their experiences for the benefit of all of us.
So, I am very satisfied with my purchase - Even if the DVD only lasts a year and then quits, for the price paid, it certainly would have been a worthwhile purchase - But, who knows, it may continue playing for a long, long time.
Awful quality, but cheap and plays other regions.......2007-12-24
I bought this player because I needed something that could play my region 5 DVD's. It did play the region 5 DVD's, but didn't play home-burnt ones and broke all together after 1 year (started making strange noises a couple of months before it broke). It just stopped in the middle of a new region-1 movie and started clicking. I turned it off, then tried turning it on after a few weeks, and it played half a movie (a different one) and then stopped again. When I first got it, took it out of the box and started setting up, my first thought was that this thing will not last very long - it just looked so cheap and of poor quality. A huge pro is that it is so cheap and you can buy a new one every year. However, it would be nice to pay 30 bucks and not have to throw the thing away after a year, so I'm looking into a Philips DVP 5140.

I purchased the Coby DVD-224ss Compact DVD Player because some of the DVD's I purchased overseas would not play on my old Panasonic. The unit was functional right out of the box. No adjustments were needed. All the DVD's that I bought overseas are now playable. This is an excellent unit for the price.

I bought it about a month ago. Used it at home hocking to a TV and on road trip to Florida. It worked fine and played all the disks I fed it. Nothing to complain until it suddenly failed two days ago. It made a bad smell and won't give any sign of life again. I will come back and tell you how good J&R's service is.

Got the DVD player few days back. The picture quality is extremely good. I liked the sound quality too. Plus it has both the NTSC & PAL color system in it. Came loaded with lot of accessories. Coby could have done better with the build quality of the DVD Player. It comes with a cover that holds the DVD Player on the back of the driver's seat or the front passenger seat, but the quality of the cover is terrible. I don't expect it to last long. I got a feeling that it was meant for the 7" DVD Player. Having lot of problem pushing the unit in. Overall a excellent product. A must BUY !!!!!

where do I even begin to describe what I thought would be an extremely handy little machine? oh yea, it didn't work!
It never worked.
I had 3 big issues with this machine. from day ONE, there was a disturbance in the picture that came and went. this disturbance resembled bad tracking on a vhs but I got the player cheap ($10.) and tolerated this one flaw.
next, this dvd player frequently overheated. the picture seemed to freeze as a result of the heat. I placed the dvd player on a trivet in an effort to improve air flow & kept the top clear of anything and everything. as a result, the dvd froze less frequently but it still froze occasionally. next, the dvd player died.
I barely got ANY use from this machine and when it was operational, the preformance was very poor.
full size or compact, I'll never buy anouther coby dvd.

It played one DVD before it started to act up. After pulling the power plug and waiting over half hour to watch another DVD, it sortof played another DVD. After that it was torture leading to complete failure. I am going to take it to the range and shoot it. That will be the most fun I get out of it.

I like a bargain, I don't want bells and whistles that cost a bunch, but I don't want to purchase an item that someone has rightly dubbed -a "throw away product". This item is just that. It is so cheaply made that is is guaranteed to break within the first six-months of use. I know this because my daughter bought this for me for my birthday and it stopped working (no picture/no disc error message) within 2-months. I was sucker enough to send the item back at huge expense (no free returns here, cost me about $20) and received a replacement after another 6-weeks. The replacement literally blew-up after about one month of use. I turned it on one evening and 'pop' and a stink and it was gone. Do not buy this product. Let's save the earth and support quality workmanship not throwaway junk.

After buying this DVD player it worked well for two months. The third month it began to get picky with some DVD which it didn't even recognize giving the message "no disc detected" while my other DVD players read them fine. Finally, the 4th month came and it would not recognize any DVD's. I called Coby customer service and they said my warrenty had expired and I was "out of luck." Not buying another Coby product.

Constant chirping noise drove me crazy.......2007-12-24
I have to agree with Georgie Girl - you can hear the DVD spinning
while you are watching a movie. It makes a constant chirping noise.
You might be able to stand it if you keep the volume on medium,
and the movie has a lot of music. I'd recommend the Initial
IDM-1295 instead. I got it for $170.00 from B&H Photo, and both
the sound and picture are great!

I ordered this Portable DVD after doing some research. I wanted it for work and also for roadtrips with my family.
The sound was good, it didn't skip when moved around. That was aboutall the positives I give this. The screen is not clear, a bit on the fuzzy side, the headphones that come with this are a joke, you can hear all sorts of background noise. The stop function promised to keep you place in the movie, but it never did. HOWEVER, the biggest problem was that you can hear the DVD spinning in the case while you are watching a movie.
I really can't recommend this because it is an inferior product. Lot's of promises from the manufacturer but in all a disappointing product.

Just as the above reviewer, my unit failed after about 2 months. I don't think it is worth the hassle of the $12 return to Coby, except in principal.
Do not buy this junk, unless you only need to use it a few times, then plan on tossing it.
Stopped working after 2 months, $12 fee to fix.......2007-07-13
This player stopped working after 2 months of very light use. The warranty is 3 months, but you have to ship the DVD player back to Coby and include a $12 money order to cover the shipping back to you. They will promise to ship you another unit in 4-6 weeks. So if you are willing to spend around $20 along with the hassle of getting the broken unit on its way back to Coby, you can spend the next couple of months hoping they actually send you a functional replacement which will last more than a few weeks.
