It has STEREO TV tuner. .......2007-10-07
GOOD:
-Many sub-$200 DVD recorder has monoral TV tuner, but this SONY GX330 has STEREO TV tuner. So you can record and play stereo sound. This point is important, because company's spec sheet often omits this fact.
-Many sub-$200 DVD recorder has cumbersome DVD disk-initializing-finalizing procedure. But SONY GX330 is very user-friendly interface. It automatically does both procedure. Using DVD+RW, I was able to play recorded disk on my Dell Inspiron Laptop without any extra step.
BAD:
-Other reviewers complain about DVD disk compatibility issue, but fail to mention that all other DVD recorders also have the same issue. SONY GX330 has actually less issues. User should remember that DVD recorder is still more complicated compared to the VCR, but it's worth it.

I HAVE HAD ANOTHER SONY IN THE PAST AND WAS NOT SURE THAT I WANTED ANOTHER. THIS ONE WAS RECOMMENDED AND I'M GLAD I PURCHASED IT. NOT ONE 'DIRTY' DVD YET. SUPER!

Thought you'd all like to know that the newest vintage of Sony recorders hasn't yet changed any of its shortcomings. The RDR-GXD -455 still records well but the disk can't be played even on a high-end Sony DVD player. This is as of October 2007.

For the price, this is an excellent product. My only reservation is that I personally don't find it very intuitive to use...but the directions are reasonably good for the non-AV geek. Best of all, it was here two days after I ordered it. Would have no problems recommending both product and vendor.

Excellent Quality and Performance for the Price!.......2007-06-01
I bought this over a year ago from Etronics and have been very happy. I had it hooked to a Sony KV-27HS420 before switching it to my recent purchase: a Sony KD-34XBR970. The NS70H is slim and light, very easy to connect(at least to another Sony product)and is simple to operate. I don't have it connected via HDMI but am still happy with the picture quality. I imagine it would be better with HDMI but oh well. I don't rent movies that often anyway. Some have mentioned they don't like a single disc DVD player but I don't mind. Anyhow, if you're looking for a sturdy, no frills DVD player the Sony NS70H is certainly worth the money.
"High failure rate" spin motor (Player died after 10 months).......2007-03-28
Pros: Beautiful picture, adequate menu options, remote has reasonable button layout.
Cons: Slow, takes about ten to twelve seconds to open the DVD tray after you hit the eject button. After working fine for ten months, it quit--just kept saying LOADING - LOADING - LOADING.
I do electronics repair, so I opened the unit and found that the DVD spin motor had failed. This DVD player uses a RF-300F-12350 motor, which has a high failure rate. I can replace my motor for under $15 in about 10 minutes, but if you don't do your own small electronics repair, you may have to pay a repair shop $90 or more to get the unit fixed, which is more than what you might pay for a brand new DVD player.
Top of the Line.......2006-08-05
This is the clearest DVD player I've ever seen/used. Even desperate housewives on DVD was a visual pleasure with this DVD player. Colors are EXTREMELY vibrant, and upconversion to HD quality on a 42 inch HD plasma is just amazing every time.
This is THE DVD player to own in my opinion. However, I HIGHLY recommend a quality HDMI cable for it...you want the highest level of connection possible from this unit, its worth the extra 30 bucks for the cable.
IT WORKS, BRAVO D1 OFTEN DID NOT.......2006-05-18
At least this thing turns on, turns off, plays movies and has a remote that makes sense. I replaced by Bravo D1 player which was trouble from the start and got worse until it finally fried itself out and succumbed to failure with no apparant reason. It is worth the price especially if you are waiting to move to HD DVD or Blueray and want a decent upconversion player. The remote is easy to use and the player is very small. making for a fit in a wide variety of installations. Sony does it again- decent, affordable and hopefully reliable.
Great DVD player for recorded DVD+R DL media.......2006-04-18
Plays all recorded media like a champ. Previous to this DVD player, I was not able to play anything but DVD+R's on my Toshiba DVD player. Very pleased.

Almost Perfect..........2005-09-15
I have had this DVD player for a few years now. Here is the reason why I still recommend Sampo over any other brand:
Price - yes, there are some cheaper DVD players on the market that you can find out there with the same features, but most of them don't last long. I've seen a lot of reviews where people complain that their DVD player stopped working in "n" number of months. This is not the case with Sampo. Like I said, I've been using it non-stop for over 3 years now, and haven't had a single problem yet. So, for an extra 20 bucks or so, I think it's nice to have a little "insurance", if you will.
Versatility - it plays virtually everything you throw at it. And, with a simple hack, you can play any DVD from any region on it as well. Plus, there is a lot of other neat "tricks" you can do with it, once you really get into it. Changing a background picture is one of them for example.
Design - very sleek, in my opinion. Looks as good as it works.
Reliability - I've been very pleased with its performance. Never a single problem. However, if you do have a problem/question, there are numerous sites/forums where you can get help.
One drawback though - it has a problem playing copied DVD's. Sometimes it wouldn't play them a particular DVD at all. Sometimes it takes a few tries for a DVD to play. I guess it's a format thing. So, if you are planning on playing a lot of copied DVD's on your player, then look for a different one. Otherwise, hands down, Sampo is the best you can buy.

The only thing that this player didn't play was an XVCD. Otherwise it's great for DVD's, DVD-R's, SVCD's, VCD's, and it like just about any media. It also plays PAL DVD's and converts the signal to NTSC. This is a very small DVD player so you cna put it just about anywhere. Quite frankly, the only thing I didn't like about it was the lack of a digital display on the unit itself, but you get a lot for the money here.

Buggy, not up to Harmon/Kardon usual standards.......2007-01-10
I've had the DVD47 for 5 months, and overall it's a nice player. It will upconvert DVDs to 720p or 1080i so that the images look sharp on a HDTV. But I've noticed a few things that I don't like about the player.
The biggest problem is the FF and Rewind controls. You would think when rewinding a DVD, and then hitting play, it would resume playing from the point that is shown on the screen. Nope.
At 2x speed, it will be a couple seconds further back, no big deal. At 8x speed, you jump back 20 seconds further, so you have to either wait out the 20 seconds, or try to get closer using the 2x search. (and at 20x speed, you are so far off, you might as well advance a chapter to get close to where you want to be). Very tedious.
I wrote to Harman/Kardon, and their specialist (M. T.) said that you shouldn't expect to be exactly at the spot you want to when using FF or RW. I have a Harman/Kardon DVD25, and it has razor sharp controls. You can FF or RW at 16x, and hit play, and you are exactly where you want to be. So, as you may expect, this was not the answer I was expecting from a product specialist.
Another thing I noticed was that the DVD 47 has a tendency to switch to 1080i (even when setting it in the menus to use 780p).
If you change HD mode from 480p, 1080i, or 720p using the button on the remote, and are using HDMI cables, the sound cuts out. You then have to stop the DVD, and hit play again to resume sound.
I also notice that occasionally a DVD will show a bit of blockiness or the picture will freeze for 1 to 5 seconds. It doesn't do this very often, but I did notice it on the occasional DVD (even brand new DVDs, so it's not an issue of smudges or the like).
So if you can live with the flabby controls and a bit of bugginess then this is not a bad player. But I'm not too thrilled with the lower standards that Harman/Kardon is marching to with this product.
