Everything in One.......2007-12-20
This is an amazing Portable media player. Once you get the firmware update (which if you don't get it seems like a paperweight) then you have many options at your hand. This PMP gets pricy after plug-in and other optional add-ons that seem like they should have come with it. I bought the Mini-Dock shortly after I bought the 605 because if you use it while charging USB it will die and it doesn't come with an AC charger. The Wifi is really simple to setup and use with the on screen QWERTY keyboard. After the plug-ins and external devices you can get, this is an amazing media player but to unlock it's potential, you'll need to fork up a pretty penny.

I got my Archos 605 in the mail yesterday and am in general happy with it. However, a few things that you need to know if you buy this product:
1) Make the leap to firefox. Technical support finally directed me to this; apparently the Archos website and store just don't work well with IE.
2) Prepare to spend a good amount of time setting this up. It's not an iPod, with the happy iTunes plug and play features. This is a powerful system that is not trivial to get what you want to do. If you're the type who likes puzzles and configuring software, this is the product for you. If you didn't like programming your tivo, I would suggest another product.
3) What people are saying about the plugins are right -- you totally have to buy multiple plugins to do what you want.
4) If you are an audible user...audible files aren't going to play on this thing. AAC files will, so your audiobooks you bought on iTunes will work.
5) Take the plunge and invest in a battery dock of some sort from Archos. You will definitely need it because the battery life is just not that great.
On the other hand, the web browser is really nice, and the interface is pretty intuitive to use. I like how I can pretty much put anything I want on it (granted, plugins may be required) and that things aren't locked down like Apple.

Napster - to - Go WORKS on the 605...........2007-12-14
Had a great deal of trouble finding out if Napsters protected To-Go content worked with the 605 - finally got mine and they do indeed work (have to sync through WMP of course.)
This is a great do-it-all player for those looking for something a bit more robust than the iTouch'es. We'll probably never see the day when Apple allows us to record video content directly to an iTouch so for me this is about a thousand times more usefull - why pay .99 an episode for Lost when I can simply set my 605 up to record the entire season for free?
Do your own research, actually look at the pro's/con's of this unit and don't purchase blindly. Too many user reviews here state things they returned the unit for that have information readily available on the web.
This unit does cost extra for features/plugins - thats not a negative, only for those of you that did no research would it be a problem. Knowing the cost for the features I wanted helped me pick this unit out, huge hard disc, incredibly speedy video playback (compared to my wifes Zen and my old Zen Vision M) and the ability to record AUDIO and VIDEO from any source.
I use this unit mostly for video, however 60 gigs of Napster to-go tracks come with as well - I also record audio from live DJ sets directly to the device, all of which are handled insanely well by this unit.
I give it 8/10 heres my breakdown:
PROS:
-Insanely nice screen, viewing angle is great compared to other similair products
-Huge hard drive
-DVR Features (extra $$ for the dock)
-Web portal is nice for when you are out and about
CONS:
-non-standard USB jack
-no place for stylus on unit
Archos 605 WiFi reviewed!.......2007-12-12
I was highly anticipating the arrival of my Archos 605! But after using the device for 1 week, I returned it. Here's why:
1. It is PAINFUL to charge this unit. It took me a whomping 6-9hrs via USB cable to PC to fully charge this thing. (BTW, no battery level indicator when charging) :(
2. Poor battery life. At max charge, I got only 4hrs 20 minutes worth of Video usuage. Way below what they advertise.
3. I can deal with #1 & #2 but the real kicker as to why I returned it: You CAN NOT view video content and charge this unit at the same time. Reason is, USB limits power to 5vt, 500mA. Simply stated, 500mA is not enough juice for the Archos 605.
So you're left with having to buy an external power supply for a poorly designed PMP. Archos should have supplied one! More money out of your pocket...
4. A la cart plugins? After spending $330 on this thing, it seems like every button you press on the Archos directs you to buy a plugin; $20 or $30 here and there really starts to add up! The sad thing is that all these plugins are already loaded on the unit! You are just paying to get the key to unlock them.
5. Poor technical support. They outsource!
On to the Pros, this thing does have some.
1. An AWESOME screen. The resolution was great! I was very happy watching videos and viewing photos.
2. Touchscreen! Very nice and I found it very easy to navigate.
3. Supported video formats like AVI!
The Archos 605 WiFi had sooooo much potential but it fell short. Battery charge time, battery life, a la cart plugins really start to outweigh all the benefits. It did for me.
If you really want to MAX the capabilities of this unit, be ready to pay an additional $100-$200 for plugins, external power, DVR. Too steep for me!

The Archos 605 Wi-fi is not a bad unit but the company sucks!! The unit has no place to put the stylus, you have to pay immediately for another 3 items to make it function. It does not have access to the web until you buy Opera, then it won't play VOB files for movies until you buy the cinema software. You cannot charge it quicker than many hours through a USB, it comes without any wall charger, you have to order a unit for $29.99 to speed up charging. The battery life is quite a bit less than claimed. Finally if you happen to live outside a big city anywhere in US or Canada and have a PO Box as your billing address they will not ship to you, you cannot pay with a VISA in that case, even if you purchased the item with the same VISA. Attempting to discuss these issues with the company is simply frustrating, the minions do not seem interested in your comments.

Well ok. I just recieved the Archos 605 Wi-Fi 30 GB,
and so far its alright. Music files go in easily, video looks very clear, etc.
But ive been having a bit of a problem.
I go to the Content Portal, and try to activate that, so it tells me to go to the Archos website and download Firmware.
Well, ive tried that already, and when its done, i tired to open the firmware file, but its un-openable, if that makes sense; its not readable, and it looks like you need a certain program to open it, so im wondering, if anybody here can help me out with this problem. i appreciate it very much if so.

Got the Archos 605 30GB a week ago.
-I'm amazed by the video quality. So far, it played all the AVI files in my collection(Anime, TV shows...etc).
-Uploaded my photo albums and it's a great way to show them to friends and relatives.
-MP3 music quality is comparable to my IPOD mini.
-Have not used the internet feature. Properly not going to since i'm online at home and work. Mostly because it cost $30 to unlock the software.
Would have given it a 5 star had it not for the amount of time(overnight oonnection using USB to a CPU) needed to charge. Can't believe an AC adaptor was not included. Ordered the travel mini charger and awaiting it's arrival. Base on reviews, the travel adaptor should cut charging time considerably. Battery life is not as advertised, but i'm statisfied. Video is about 3 hours and MP3 proberly longer, have not tested that. I mainly use it to watch shows on my daily commute. So far, pretty statisfied.

I am very satisfied with my purchase. I've read other reviews and I know that certain codecs and add ons like the web browser cost extra but, I understand why Archos didn't include them - because they would drive up the cost of the units. I consult for a video technology company and I know that Microsoft and Apple are greedy with their codecs (which is why I convert my videos to Divx and buy products that encode/decode in Divx.) So... I completely understand.
The interface is too cool. The screen is bright and clear. Battery life is awesome. USB charging is convenient. Very well designed. The Opera web browser option is awesome and comparable to a PC web browser (although I wish it used the Mozilla code base instead). It handles YouTube like a pro. It's a good replacement for carrying a laptop on train and plane trips as far as entertainment and web surfing.

Bought this product with the dock. By and large, both work as advertised. Read the product description at to what it does - I'll go over the cons.
Biggest problem is this company has absolutely no support. Go to their website and there's no tel# and/or email address.
Big problem - I recorded dvd movies to the device. It'll let you play on the device but not on an external device (e.g. TV).
The user-interface is absolutely w/o "out of the box" thinking. very cumbersome and at times very unintuitive (e.g. copying files)
There's some video editing features - sometimes buggy but works.
Sometimes the mp3 file tags don't transfer over properly. This could be a WMP problem.
Also, bought the browser. works but i wish it played WMP video streams.
The company really needs to provide some sort of a support mechanism - at least a forum.
Happy with the product..but sometimes not so.

Feature loaded, poor quality.......2007-12-05
Bought two of these at the same time. I loved the features, and they work for a short time. Even plays DIVX files, so I can put lots of TV shows, from my TiVO, and copies of legally unprotected DVD's (home videos) on a single DVD.
Sadly, the charging equipment is low quality. Both car chargers broke on the first use. Out of the box one of them would not charge the battery. On the 11th use of one of them DVD's at no longer recognized.
If the quality was there, this would be a perfect portable player. There really isn't any competition in the area, so there are no alternatives.
I've owned these for a year.

I bought this for my sons 5th birthday. He is the youngest of 3 and has grown up watching my older kids watch movies and play video games. This is something just for him. It took him about 3 days to figure out how it works. Now he can watch his DVD's and play the preloaded games. Most of the games are a big challenge for him but I know in time he will figure it out!!!!!!!I think that is what keeps it interesting for him. Anyway, I am so glad I bought it and so is he. Good purchase!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Far So Great!!!.......2007-06-08
I bought two of these, one for our 6 year old and one for our 8 year old. They've only had them for two weeks, but so far they are great! (I might write another review at the end of summer). We have a two day car trip in a few weeks, as well as an overseas flight. This was our prompt for this purchase! Both boys have been able to figure out how to move from game to game, or watch a dvd, etc, on their own! The units seem very sturdy, and all the accessories are always with us! After reading other reviews, I was concerned that the screen might be too small for viewing movies, but I no longer feel that way! It is such a crystal clear picture! The boys seem very satisfied!
A great versatile toy.......2007-05-12
This player is great for my 6 year old who was asking for his own 'MP3' player. He loves being in charge of his own movies, music and games - and this player does it all. We took it on a 2-week road trip and it was fantastic! The batteries lasted over 3 hours and the car adapter kept him going. I was worried that it would be too big, but it's not - he loves it! I highly recommend this player for active kids.
A very good movie and game player.......2007-04-23
My [...] girl and [...] boy both love their players. The [...]really likes the Sonic games and the ability to connect it to the TV. On a TV the 8 bit graphics are jagged but he does not care and the games are playable. The builtin screens are a little low in resolution if you look closely but cartoons look good and the kids have not noticed anything.
The players have a nice lock feature to disable the controls so that the movie is not accidentally stopped. They have both dropped the players serveral times and they both continue to work well. The only problem is that the [...] had figured out how to remove the battery pack. She does this at times then gets upset the movie stopped.
The players come with everything, AC and auto adapters, a remote control, earphones, built-in stand, battery pack and the wires to play the movies and the games directly on an a TV with RCA jacks.

Prortable DVD Player For My Toyota Prius.......2007-05-13
I was looking for a small DVD player that I could use in my Toyota Prius. I have it setup so that it plays through the car JBL radio and uses the built in 7" screen on the Prius for the video. This DVD player is small enough to fit in the glove box or center console. It comes with all the cords and carrying case needed to be fully functional. I did not have to buy anything thing else. The picture and sound quality are very good. No need for anything thing else for use in an automobile.

Great portable DVD player, the resolution is perfect and the sound is just fine. The only reason why I gave it a 4 was because it does get a little hot when you watch a movie with the wall outlet adapter. It does not do that when you use the rechargable battery. I love it.

I have had this product only 1 month. The features were why I purchased this item & I have not been disappointed with that. However, multiple segments on the function display did not illuminate. This was a gift for my son & the hassle of repackaging, returning to vendor, waiting for a replacement made an exchange non-desirable. In this case, buying the product from a store rather than over the net would be my recommendation.

I could have given this five stars,but I just purchased this little gem a few days ago and Im just getting used to it. I love the small screen size and the incredible picture. Another plus is once you attach the battery pack there is no need to remove it unless you want it even more compact. It does act as a stand and one of the fun aspects of this unit is that you can bring it virtually anywhere(it even fits in a big pocket)and can watch a DVD.
I have quite a library of TV shows on DVD, and say you are waiting forsomeone, or you have a fewminutes to kill before an appointment or whatever, you can just take this baby out and watch a 25 minute sitcom!
I am looking forward to bringng this with me on a cross country train trip next month. I d like to buy another battery for this unit, but I have no idea if they sell them alone.
I have always been a litte wary of Coby products. The headphones they have are awful, but I bought this and the 5 inch TV DVD radio from Coby and both so far seem great.

This is a great affordable DVD/CD player. I am particular fond of its ability to be hooked to a big screen TV or monitor to view movies. In comparison with other players I had in the past, I think this gadget is much faster in terms of reading the disks right away. You don't have to wait and wonder if something is wrong with the media. Also, the price is really affordable when you consider all the attachments it includes: car power adapter, video audio cables for big screen hook up, electrical transformer, speakers, and recliner. This is definitely a five-star product.

Our daughter loves this little mini player. We take it on trips, out overnight or just to visit friends. The case holds the players and extra cds/dvds. Her music and dvds are never far behind and at almost 2, she can do it herself and for our independent little one, this is the most important. :-)
Broke in 1 week, got replacement, broke again in 1 day .......2007-06-21
I purchased this DVD player, and after using it for 2 hours a day, for 1 week, it stopped working. I contacted Coby and was advised that I had to pay $18, even though the product has a 90 day warranty. I sent the DVD to them anyway, with the $[...] money order. I received a brand new , sealed, same model back, and this time it stopped working after just 1 day of playing DVDs. The same problem as the 1st one, it just stop reading disks. Do not buy this product, it is JUNK.
bad product bad company to buy from.......2007-01-17
I purchased this item for my father for christmas. One day later is stopped working completely. This product was sold thru amazon by Ritz Camera. It has now been three weeks since we contacted this company to either have the item replaced or refunded. To date this still has not been rectified. I do not suggest that anyone by any product by this manufacturer or from this company. In fact I think amazon should drop Ritz Camera completely. Each time Ritz Camera is contacted they tell you it will be 24 to 48 hrs to process the refund or replacement. Yeah we've been hearing that for three weeks now. Buy from them at your own risk. Thanks.

My Coby is the best gift I ever had. My Coby works really well. I like the favorite color of it and I like it very much. The screen works great and I can see it very clearly. System is rugged, great quality/features/accessories, good battery life. My kid has put this through the wringer already and its working great. She even poured a cup of water in it! I poured it out, let it sit for a day and it fired right up.

The cover on the dvd player was broke, instead of contacting Amazon, I contacted the manufacture. They are fixing it and sending it back. It is just taking longer than anticipated. This will not stop me from purchasing items through Amazon. Another review can be made upon receipt of unbroke item.

Wonderful little player.......2007-06-26
I am so glad that I purchased this DVD player. We have used it to entertain my children on long trips and I use it several times per week at the gym. It is a well-made little player with a conveniently compact size. My favorite feature is the Subtitle function because I find it much easier to watch a movie where the dialogue is printed than to try to hear it in a loud environment like an airplane or a gym. The one criticism I have of the player is that the maximum volume isn't loud enough, but fortunately the Subtitle feature takes care of that for me. And my children have never complained so it must be sufficiently loud for them when they are wearing the ear plugs. For the price, I doubt you could find a better player.
Above Average Product Overall - Average Audio/Volume levels.......2007-03-22
I tried out my new PET320 and was fairly satisfied with the quality and finish of the product. I played one of each, a DVD, a VCD, an Audio CD and a mp3 CD, and to my surprise the DVD and Audio CD gave out a relatively lower volume output at MAX volume than the VCD and mp3 CD. But fair to say that the volume levels are enough to enjoy a movie from a distance of 2-3 feet, which would be your normal viewing distance for this 3.5" screen. The audio seemed to sound more crisp while using the Rock equalizer settings rather than the Default. One thing that I did not test though is the volume levels when you have some disturbance around, and I think that it might need a lot to be desired in that area. The picture quality is good and the player has a very rugged and compact look, and it would be fairly safe to say that the disc mechanism would be reliable owing to the Philips brand name. You get what you are paying for and more, since a lot of stuff is bundled together in the package including car kit, pouch, AV cable and earphones among other things. It would have been great if Philips threw in a small remote in that price, but maybe in future models. The retractable stand could be annoying in the beginning, but once you get the hang of how much force you need to apply it just works fine for what it is made for. I connected this to my TV and the picture quality was perfect, only thing that the volume won't increase much beyond a certain point even if I crank up the TV volume. Ideal for places where you cannot carry your TV with you, and still need DVD entertainment.
