5 out of 5 stars Didn't excpect a combo player to be this good.......2007-11-29

I have owned this player for 3-4 months. Awesome little player! I wanted a combo players because I wanted to transfer videos of my kids videos that we have had an various tape formats. Some of which we don't have the camera for anymore. I was able to rent/borrow VHS adaptors that let you play your old tapes in this machine and transfer them to DVD. this is my main dvd player for my home theater, it's quit impressive for a combo player!!

The good:
SD DVD upconverting is very good through the HDMI output. I didn't expect a combo unit to do this so well. I think the 720P looks better than the 1080i on this player. Just my opion.
Plays all of my back up DVD flawlessly.
If you connect composite cables to the players you can record tv programming.
It has a mini firewire plug in the front so you can connect you DV camcorder.
Luv the blue display

The bad:
Internal fan is a little noisy

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2007-11-21

As other reviewers have noted, response is very slow, both when starting the unit, and when hitting any function button.

My biggest complaint is the 'time record' button. I believe this is the first recorder I've seen in probably 15 years which requires you to set a separate 'time record' function in order for the timer to work. Sadly, I've missed numerous programs when I either didn't set it, or when I turned it off to remove the DVD and then didn't re-set it. It's certainly my fault I don't hit the right button, but it's irritating that an additional step is necessary.

Another drawback is that if you record multiple programs, you have to watch them in reverse order (last to first) in order to clear up space on the disk. If you've only got time to watch a 30 minute program that's in the middle of your recordings, and want to record another one, you'll have to put the new program at the end, rather than in the space from the program you just watched.

I've also noticed the unit starts warning you about pending programs nearly 30 minutes before the programmed record time. It'd be one thing if it shut down playback 10 minutes early, but 30 minutes seems a bit excessive to me.

All in all, a very disappointing purchase. I'll be replacing it as soon as I can.

2 out of 5 stars Had Problems.......2007-11-15

I cannot recommend this product. Although upconvert was nice, players remote did not work after set up. Response on panel buttons was sluggish.

1 out of 5 stars Another Burn.......2007-11-12

I bought this product to convert my rather large collection of VHS tapes to DVD-R discs. With the Toshiba name and some good reviews, I thought I had made a smart purchase. I was wrong.

Sometimes, when dubbing, it continues to play the VHS tape but it stops recording without any on-screen notification! Sometimes I get the "Video input system changed" message that others have reported, but it usually happens that I watch 2-3 hours of tape only to find that the unit recorded a whopping 5-10 seconds.

If you want to dub your old tapes to disc, then your money will most likely be better spent on a product from a different manufacturer. Shame on you Toshiba!

4 out of 5 stars Toshiba SD-V295KU.......2007-11-24

I purchased mine today at Best Buy, and YES it does not have a tuner built into the unit. The Best Buy price sticker indicates this as well as the outside of the unit does. It works great once one reads the manual which is actually very helpful, not to mention in perfect English also.

3 out of 5 stars it's all good.......2007-10-21

this dvd/vcr it's alright i guess, with it not having a cable hook up in the back the only way you can record any tv programs is to use your auxiliary hook up on your tv but it does play real good but you have to make sure that you have that timer button on or you will not get anything you can programs how many programs you want but if you don't hit that timer button you will not get anything but like any other new thing you buy you have to get use to it right ? but all around once you get use to it you'll love it i do really like it alot now

3 out of 5 stars Confusing but.. it records!.......2007-07-08

Picked this up from BestBuy last night - should have thought twice as there was one on the shelf that had been returned already. It does not come with a tuner so without a cable or satellite box you're screwed.

My television lacks RCA jacks so I have an RCA/Coax converter. So far so good but the annoying part that I can't figure out is that I have to move the cables from VCR OUT to VCR IN when I want to record something, then back to VCR OUT when I want to watch!

The DVD part worked fine, no real problem there, picture quality looks good and the VCR recording quality looks great. The remote is a joke. You have to press combination keys to get things to work and it was very confusing to learn. It also hates to leave DVD mode. You cannot turn off the DVD side and only focus on the VCR ergo you'll be programming a timer or something and suddenly you're in DVD mode!

The other model at BestBuy was the Sony SLV-D380P. As far as I can tell it's just as bad but with an extra $10 Sony markup!

2 out of 5 stars Its not clear this unit requires an external tuner to record.......2007-06-24

Its not clear, until you recived this unit, that it reqruies an external tuner to record from tv. This should be clearly noted in the ads for this product.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad except for one thing........2007-06-05

I didn't have the problem with the 5 second delay. BUT this unit has no recorder and if you want to record content from your TV you MUST connect this through your cable BOX. There is no way to hook it up directly to your cable wire. Which was no big deal except I had to play "musical" DVD players because I bought it to put in a room with no cable box.
The picture quality is fine and so far it works well.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Relatively Expensive Piece of Junk!.......2007-10-24

I tried to give this thing no stars, but had to give it one in order to write a review.

I bought this on Amazon about 6 months ago. In spite of the backwards messages and displays (described later) and unbelievably tiny red Timed Recording indicator light, it worked fine for the first 3 months. Then one night, while it time-recorded from 9-10PM onto video, it didn't stop recording until it ran out of tape! I didn't know it had done that (duh!), so when I returned home from work the next evening, the daytime recording onto DVD never happened. Seems that, if you schedule timed recordings onto both DVD and VCR, if there is no tape left, no recording occurs at all.

Then the error message that was on the screen that must've occurred when it "couldn't" record onto DVD that day wouldn't go away. As a last resort, I unplugged the thing for over 3 hours - It finally went away. Of course, all of the timed recording and system settings were gone and had to be re-input. Unplugging it for 3 or more hours is now the only way to get rid of ANY error message.

Now it never stops recording onto tape no matter what the scheduled stop time is. I've resorted to only time-recording onto DVD...what a waste of money for a dual unit, eh?

Oh, yes, the indicators and backwards messages. The VCR is on the left and DVR on the right of the unit; but when ejecting, the eject indicator on the screen is on the right when ejecting a tape and the left when ejecting a DVD (that engineer must've been on drugs). The messages are also backwards: If what you actually need to do next is press the time recording button to turn it on, the message tells you to turn it off, and vice versa...perhaps same engineer on the same drugs?

I haven't yet tried copying my video tapes onto DVD...from the other reviews here, I anticipate another "fun" experience. I strongly suggest buying a unit like this that is manufactured by ANYONE other than Toshiba.

3 out of 5 stars Works well, but channels are limited.......2007-05-31

I followed the manual for the setup and everything works well. Those having problems watching a DVD need to make sure they don't skip the "Finalization" so that you can watch it on other DVD players. The only problem I've encountered so far is that it is limited to 123 channels and only goes up to 123 (so channel 252 is out), which would not be a problem if I could get it to play the channels I manually tried to program (numbered UNDER 123, of course). It won't let me add or delete some channels, and after I've added them, I only get the "blue screen" and no broadcast. I have everything hooked up correctly, so I don't know what's going on with that except I won't be able to record TV programs as I wanted to. I do have some really good VHS tapes I will use it to transfer to DVD so all is not lost. I know. Good luck to me.

1 out of 5 stars Glad they don't make this anymore.......2007-03-31

This thing is terrible. I don't know where to begin! Anything I burn (if it burns) doesn't play on anything else. The picture quality sucks. Any good features are non-existant. I actually got sunburned from the bright display. It was WAY overpriced. And to top it off, it crapped out on me 14 days after the warranty expired. Thanks Toshiba for a wonderful product.

3 out of 5 stars My own experience.......2006-07-10

In looking at the other reviews, I felt I needed to base one on my own experience after having the DVD recorder/combo for over 3 months.

I have had it freeze up and need to be unplugged twice, usually after I have left the unit turned on for 2-3 weeks without shutting it off.

I will agree the VCR/DVD light is bright, but it is easy to tell which you are set to. The light for the clock is very dim when the set is turned off.

As for performance, I'm enjoying the DVD burner. It works well, and I have very few issues. (See above). I would recommend reading the manual first though. While not entirely necessary its a good idea when you are trying to record movies that run just over 2 hours (due to the DVD media and picking the type of record XP, SP, LP, SLP).

For playback, the movies I burn come in a little dark on my HDTV, while normal DVD's work fine. If I play the burned discs on a computer or other DVD/TV set they look fine.

Overall I think the product is a good buy for a mid-range price.

1 out of 5 stars Good on paper, poor on execution.......2006-04-13

This is a sad machine. I have now tried to copy 5 VHS tapes to DVD's using this machine. Of the 5:

1. Three of them copied fine, but are UNPLAYABLE on any player except THIS ONE. I have tried 2 new computers, and two very recent component DVD players. Also tried different brands of DVD-R's. No luck.

2 The other two totally froze the unit. During the "finalization process". "Processing Please Wait" remained on the screen for over two hours. Had to pull the plug on it to shut it off. Not one button worked.

This machine was designed by an idiot. The upwards tilting MIRROR finish across the front panel reflects any sunlight or room lighting right into your face and BLINDS YOU!

The VCR and DVD indicator lights are blinding bright enough to guide a plane onto an airport runway on a dark foggy night.

On the other hand, the clock digits are so DIM, they are nearly invisible while the machine is off.

I believe this model is not available in many places anymore. Too bad I got in at the end of it's life. I think I still have a few days left to return it to Sears. They don't seem to have any more either.I will gladly pay whatever restocking fee they charge me, to put ME out of my misery.

What a complete, frustrating waste of time this was.

Toshiba SD-V394 DVD/VCR Combo

Amazon.com Product Description

Get maximum enjoyment out of both your VHS and DVD movie libraries with the progressive scan Toshiba SD-V394 DVD/VCR Combo. The multi-format DVD player is compatible with a wide range of disc formats, including DVD movie, CD audio, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, and VCD. You can play discs burned with MP3 and WMA digital audio files, and it's also DivX Home Theater Certified--meaning that it's compatible with video burned to disc using both the DivX video format. You can also view photo slideshows from Kodak Picture CDs with JPEG images.

The VCR features 19-micron heads that match precisely the width of the SP and EP azimuths and read only the signal recorded on each azimuth (not adjoining tracks). The commercial skip feature automatically advances the tape 30-seconds forward, bypassing recorded commercials. The Auto Clock Set function ensures that your VCR never blinks "12:00" again. A special data stream in your local broadcast source (where available) automatically sets the clock display and keeps it accurate--even when time changes to daylight saving and back. Other VCR features include 8-event/1-month programming and auto channel setup.

The DVD player provides the Digital Cinema progressive scan (3:2 inverse pulldown) function, which provides accurate, smooth film reproduction. With the Digital Picture Zoom interactive feature, you can select an area of the picture you want to zoom in on and magnify it. It can also be used to expand letterbox-only films to increase the viewable area on-screen. Other features include a four fast scan options (2x, 4x, 8x, 20x), multi-camera angle selection, 14-bit/108 MHz video digital/analog converter (DAC), 24-Bit/192kHz audio DAC, parental controls, and tri-lingual on-screen menus (English, French, Spanish).

The ColorStream Pro component video output allows the video signal to be sent from the DVD player to a component video equipped interlaced or progressive scan TV. When utilized with an HD-compatible set, typical NTSC artifacts-like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker-are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with unequaled color purity. The full range of video and audio connections include includes:

Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

4 out of 5 stars Great DivX Support.......2007-05-06

I was looking for a second VCR/DVD for an extra TV we have and chose this unit as it seemed to have good DivX support, which I was interested in playing with. Well, the DivX support has turned out to be rock-solid, playing everything I've thrown at it in countless formats burned on DVD-R, CD-RW and CD-R. Its never failed to decode a file. I've moved the unit to our video room and we've been enjoying it ever since. It is true the quality of playback of the VCR isn't great, but its good enough for my child's videos. In addition, the remote isn't too fancy, but the unit has excellent controls accessible from the remote for controlling things like picture size, jpeg playback, etc.

3 out of 5 stars DVD died after 6 months, but GOOD Toshiba Customer Service.......2007-04-16

Title says it all. DVD just stopped working after 6 months. No matter what disc you put in, the machine said "no disc." This is too bad because the machine perfectly fit our needs.

I called Toshiba Customer Service, sent the old machine to them, and in two weeks had another machine. However, the machine they sent me was a DIFFERENT MODEL from the one I purchased and it lacked some of the features I needed.

So I called Toshiba again. This time they sent me a prepaid shipping label which I used to mail this machine back to them. In two weeks I received a check for the purchase price of my original machine!

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what we were looking for, works well so far.......2007-03-14

We have been very pleased with our purchase. I found reading the previous reviews to be accurate and very helpful. Very easy to hook-up, will work on old television sets, DVD and VHS work well, VHS is more noisy when rewinding. We bought this for our children to watch movies and just use the most basic features, so it has suited our needs well. If looking for all bells and whistles would probably choose higher end model, but if looking to stay simple and basic I would choose this model.

2 out of 5 stars Poor VHS playback; bad remote.......2007-02-27

This unit actually has nice DVD playback, but that's where the good news ends. The VHS playback is quite bad on this unit, even in SP mode. Also, the remote is way too small, with tiny little lettering that can only be deciphered in bright light. Would it really have cost Toshiba that much to increase the size of the remote by a couple of inches, with lettering we can actually see?

The user interface for taping programs has way too many button strokes. You must go through the VCR setup menu just to get to the programming screen and you need to press the ENTER key after each parameter entry such as date, channel, etc. It doesn't end there. Exiting the menu itself won't set your timed program. After you've backed out of the programming screen, you must then press the TIMER/REC button in order for the timed program to be registered. The unit doesn't remind you to do this after you've backed out of the programming screen. Now, once you've done all this, the unit will then, for some strange reason, switch automatically to DVD mode whether you like it or not. So if there's a DVD in the unit, it will begin to play. If you don't want this to happen (who would?), you must then go into the DVD screen and hit STOP. Whomever designed this user interface should have their head examined.

If you've owned a Panasonic in the past, you will not be happy with this unit.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Quality.......2007-02-19

After less than a year of limited use, the picture changes from color to black & white. The problem occurs intermittently, and it is completely random. I did not purchase an extended warranty plan because for something less than $100 it seemed silly. But after limited use for something like this to happen just screams out 'JUNK' to me.

Toshiba D-VR4 DVD Recorder/VCR Dual Deck

Amazon.com Product Description

Delivering true multi-media versatility at a remarkably affordable price, Toshiba's D-VR4 combination DVD recorder and VCR opens a world of video recording and archiving options while saving valuable shelf space. It's a 4-head, hi-fi stereo VCR and a full-featured, progressive-scan DVD player that handles your DVDs, CDs, MP3 music discs, and JPEG-filled digital-photo discs, all wrapped into a component that stands just 3 inches tall. The recorder can store up to 12 hours of audio/video--whether broadcast programming or copies of your home movies to share with loved ones--on a 4.7 GB double-sided DVD-RAM disc and 6 hours on a write-once DVD-R or recordable DVD-RW.

The D-VR4's disc recorder offers the flexibility of recording on both DVD-RAM--perfect for instant chapter access and for multiple rerecordings--as well as DVD-R, the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats (great for sharing camcorder footage with loved ones). DVD-RW compatibility lets you erase and rewrite, though relatively few players and computer drives will play back DVD-RWs. DVD-RAM discs can be read, written, and erased more than 100,000 times.

Time Slip lets you use the device like a digital video recorder, or DVR. Because of DVD-RAM's speedy transfer rate, you can view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while still recording the show in progress.

In addition to recording new video content, the D-VR4 lets you transfer and even enhance your favorite video recordings to durable, space-saving discs--a terrific way to archive, preserve, and access your movies and family videos.

For top-of-the-line playback quality, the D-VR4 is equipped with a 10-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter capable of great color purity and detail. When connected to a high-definition or HD-ready television through its ColorStream Pro component-video outputs, the D-VR4 delivers a progressive-scan DVD picture. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The D-VR4 also features Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive (3:2 pulldown reversal) for DVD playback. DVD mastering commonly introduces a distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The deck's abundant connections include 2 composite-video and 1 S-video input, 2 sets of stereo analog (left/right) RCA inputs (with a choice, for DVD recording, of uncompressed, linear PCM or, to conserve disc space, Dolby Digital 2.0 audio encoding). The DVD and VCR sections share a single composite-video output and stereo analog audio output (saving input space on your TV or audio receiver), while the DVD player also offers the component-video outputs mentioned above, an S-video output, and a pair of digital-audio outputs (1 coaxial, 1 optical) for channeling Dolby Digital and DTS multichannel surround signals to a compatible digital surround receiver.

Product Description

This video recorder gives you the best of both worlds - analog VHS videocassette recording and digital DVD recording. Both can record TV shows at pre-programmed times from a built-in 125 channel TV tuner. The DVD recorder (which records on DVD-RAM, and DVD-R /RW discs), will also record tapes played on the VHS player. It's a great way to make a smooth transition from VCR to DVD, for home recording purposes. Multi-Drive Playback and Recording from VCR to DVD, from DVD to VCR (does not record copy-protected material) ColorStream Pro® Component Video Outputs - These outputs allow the highest quality video signal to be sent from the DVD player to a component video equipped progressive scan TV.When this connection is utilized with today's HD-compatible sets, typical NTSC artifacts-like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker-are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with unequaled color purity. Chase Play allows the user to begin watching a recording that is already in progress from the beginning while it continues to record to the end. 4 out of 5 stars GOOD MACHINE WITH SOME SHORTCOMMINGS.......2007-07-28

Well, I had this machine for about a year now. Never ever had any technical problems with it. The only problem I had was my own mistake in disc selection. This machine excepts ONLY DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM. DO NOT TRY any dics with a + symbol, it won't work. Propriatory choices I suppose. In case of DVD-RAM I have nothing but the best to say. Yes they do cost a bit more money but they are good for 100,000 times re-recording.
Dubbing works fine, DVD recording quality is as good as your signal. It never failed to play a commercially recorded disc, and I make a lot of discs on my computer and everyone works like a hod damn LOL.
I guess like any new technology it takes a bit of practise and getting used to to make something work. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is the limitation in disc choice. There are ones out there excepting any format DVD and lets face it, computers have been excepting it for ages now, and DVD/RW is now dirt cheap. I hope this will help some folks out there decidng on the machine. The situation is way better with this one now, lot's of bargain prices out there.

1 out of 5 stars Toshiba D-VR-4 DVD Recorder/VCR dual deck.......2007-03-03

At first this product was okay. I managed to get past the "wrong DVD" or "No Disk" displays. Now the VCR is not working. Had I read the reviews from Amazon first, I would have not bought this product. I did not get it from Amazon. It is a waste of my money, and I am sorry that I kept it!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars I'd give it 0 stars if I could. BIG waste of time and money........2007-02-20

I'd love to figure out how this thing works, but after months of frustration, I'm ready to trash it. I'm not even sure it's worth sending for repair. It doesn't like any DVD that I use, and I can't get the timer to work, not even for VHS. The OTR button works fine, which isn't helpful if I want to record something while I'm out. I've read the manual over and over, but to no avail. The remote has so many buttons on it, it's takes a while to figure out which button you're supposed to press; NOT user friendly. I'll never buy another Toshiba product again. I wish I would have returned the unit so that I could get my money back, but I was determined to make this work. I now see that it's impossible. (BTW, I didn't purchase this through Amazon, and it's too late to return it now. The Manufacturer's Warranty isn't worth the trouble, because I no longer want to own this unit!)

1 out of 5 stars Dead.......2007-01-06

Got it today! Looks great! Plugged it in won't even light up! Now I have to pay the shipping back and wait!!!!!!!! What a bummer!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Look for something else.......2006-09-01

I can't suggest what else to try, but this one probably won't make you happy. I bought this and never really figured out how to make it work. I constantly got disc error messages and spent quite a bit of money on different DVD discs. I think I did record a couple shows/movies, but never got around to watch them. The DVD drawer quit working after approximately 30-40 openings/closings (a couple months). I returned the unit ($15 or so for shipping....my dime). I just got a call that they have to replace the unit (newer d-vr5 model). It's been out of my hands for over a month now and it will take another 2-3 weeks to get a replacement.

I must say I am very happy with the customer service, however it's taken quite a bit longer in the "shop" than I was told. At least they were apologetic about it and the men I've spoken to about getting it returned have both very nice and knowledgeable. I think it's just the service department that is being slow.

I hope the d-vr5 is an upgrade in some way (ease of use, reliabliity, something!)

Toshiba SDV393 Progressive DVD/VCR Combination

Amazon.com Product Description

Minimize component clutter while stepping into high-resolution audio/video entertainment with Toshiba's SD-V393 DVD/VCR combo. The DVD deck plays a variety of optical content, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and video CD, as well as MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) music files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. A 4-head, hi-fi VCR gives you exciting stereo playback for your entire library of VHS tapes; it'll even play S-VHS tapes (at regular VHS quality). You can also copy non-Macrovision-protected DVDs to videotape--just the thing for sharing your computer-edited, DVD-based home movies with loved ones.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The SD-V393 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal (Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive). DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The DVD deck's JPEG viewer makes it easy to watch custom slide shows from digital photos burned to recordable CDs. The unit's array of home-theater-ready video connections includes composite-, S-video, and ColorStream Pro component-video outputs, with the VCR and DVD components sharing the composite-video and RF video outputs--especially convenient if you'll be using this device with a TV that only has RF or composite-video inputs. The DVD player's internal digital-to-analog audio converter (DAC) works at 24-bit, 192 kHz resolution to ensure optimum sonic quality from a range of digital program material; the video DAC operates at 10-bit/54 MHz resolution.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs (DVD/VCR) channels audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals from DVDs can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. In addition, readily accessible front-panel AV inputs permit easy connection for a game console or a camcorder for simple dubbing of home movies to the VHS deck.

For enhanced picture quality during VHS playback, the 4-head hi-fi VCR uses a pair of 19-micron video heads, which deliver exceptional (near SP) picture quality of content recorded and played back in the extended play (EP) mode. Commercial skip lets you pass over commercials during playback. Other features include 1-year, 8-event programming, high-speed (200x) rewind and fast-forward, index skip, auto head cleaner, and auto clock set--no more flashing "12:00".

2 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 18 months........2007-06-03

I've read several online post and a lot of complaints are being made about the Toshiba DVD/VCR combo SD-V393. A lot of these models have stopped working after only a little over a year of use. I bought this product in December 2005 from Sears. I thought that the power connection was loose but realized the DVD/VCR had died. Previous use of this item was great but I feel that buying a product that will only last a little more than a year is not reliable.

3 out of 5 stars dvd/vcr.......2007-01-09

unit takes time to react to a command. At first I thought something was wrong with the product. It wouldn't rewind or fast forward immediately from when I pushed the button. But other than the delay of "thinking" of what to do, the unit performs fine.

5 out of 5 stars Great picture and sound quality, easy to use for the techno-challenged.......2006-05-08

This was one of the best gifts I've ever received. The buttons make sense; both DVDs and videotapes play perfectly. I've had mine for a year and a half. I see that other folks have written that they have had problems, but I have had no problems at all. Although I primarily use it for DVDs,I really love this machine, and would recommend it to anyone who still has videos, and who hates complicated buttons and/or directions on their remotes.

4 out of 5 stars WORKS GREAT - LESS FILLING ! !.......2006-04-10

I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS OF NOISE OR POOR QUALITY WITH THE TOSHIBA SD-V393. I HAVE ONLY USED IT A FEW WEEKS BUT SO FAR - SO GOOD! I DO AGREE THE REMOTE CONTROL IS VERY SMALL.

A.P.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Toshiba, great customer service !.......2007-12-11

I purchased this refurbished DVD/VCR combo and received a very satisfactory product. However, I had some questions on operation of
a couple functions. I called the customer service number given in
above review (1-800-631-3811) and received VERY prompt and courteous
and helpful advice. I was so pleased with the customer service; felt I
should drop a line in appreciation.

1 out of 5 stars Combo Deck.......2007-01-03

The DVD deck faild on this unit in less than one year. I have been a loyal Toshiba customer for years, but after using this unit, which has been unreliable for quite a while now, I will be shopping for other brands.

5 out of 5 stars Toshiba is sending me a new unit!!.......2004-06-25

I bought mine in Oct. of 2003. I have the same problem with the DVD player that others have been complaining about. I called Toshiba and a VERY nice lady is sending me a new updated model as soon as I send in my old unit. The trick is to call Toshiba's Customer Service number (800) 631-3811.

This certainly is much better than Panasonic or Sony has treated me in the recent past with my VCR players. I highly recommend anything Toshiba!!!

Loved the easy hook-up, easy use of remote, looked nice and played fine. Purchased 11-06-03, and the DVD part stopped without warning 05-29-04. The kids never touched this one; it was all for Mommy and therefore subject to only gentle use. Now if you put a DVD in, it takes a long time to load, then comes up "ERR." And now the door makes a grinding noise when it opens. Severely disappointed, heartbroken, etc. Apparently VCRs, DVD players, and these combo units are meant to be disposable - work six months and then discard. If so, we may as well disregard brand names and buy the cheapest ones available. Forget quality, reliability, and pride of workmanship - those are things of the past.

3 out of 5 stars Globalization: You get what you pay for (and deserve).......2004-05-04

Like cheap prices on products made in China? Do you actually expect them to work like Japanese electronics manufactured in the 1980's just because the Japanese brand is printed on the cabinet? Get real. There's no such a thing as a free-lunch. DVD margins are too low. So is quality. Period.

If your unit is misbehaving, try to cool it off. I have two of these gizmos (one upstairs and one downstairs), and I when I re-arranged my cabinets to give them more air and when I run them with the cabinet doors open, they behave. When they warm up, they stop running properly. Both units suffer from a heat-related transient defect that probably comes from mediocre manufacturing quality and components.

All this delight derives from paying employees $400 per year and keeping them in working conditions that would scare an American coal miner during the 1890's.

1 out of 5 stars DVD motor stopped working after just a year and a half.......2006-11-15

I've always heard that Toshiba products are reliable, but this DVD/VCR combo stopped working after just 18 months. When a DVD is loaded, it fails to spin up. After about a minute, it spits the disk back out. It's very disappointing to have to buy another unit so quickly after buying the last one.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting....mine did the same!.......2006-05-26

Ok, so I purchased this item about a year and a half ago and I absolutely loved it! It was a good space saver having two units in one, and fit nicely under my tv in my dorm room. However, a few weeks ago i was watching an almost brand-new dvd and suddenly, the dvd part started this loud clicking, the screen froze, and the unit completely shut itself off....and following that was a long, frustrating period of time where I was trying to get the dvd door open to retrieve my dvd...I ended up just prying it open with a screw driver. I did wait however, for the thing to suddenly turn back on....I waited a whole week but it remained frozen. Then the machine suffered the wrath of the screwdriver.

To conclude, I am very disappointed in this product because I believed that in combination with my flatscreen toshiba tv, it was amazing. I loved the picture and the quality of both units' playbacks...it even made my old vhs tapes look better than ever. I'm just sorry to say that I had to let it go. Now that I'm in the market for another dvd player (no more combos, thanks.) I am confident that I WILL NOT buy this product again, nor do I recommend it to anyone else. Read the other reviews too because mine seemed to be a common problem.

Hope this helps.

2 out of 5 stars I Should Have Listened.......2006-01-02

Instead of being mindful of warnings about combos not to mention failing to read a single on-line review of said player I purchased Toshiba's SD-V290 DVD-VCR combo.

I immediately regreted my decesion, despite being in need of a VCR.

The picture quality is less than stellar as far as the DVD portion is concerned. Unlike my old JVC XV-523GD (a great player by the way) on any given disc a thin layer of grain lays on top of the picture and some of the colors seemed overly bright while others were dull and lifeless. I have spent the last two years fiddling with my television settings -- mostly in vain.

The day after the basic warranty expired the DVD player began acting up. I would receive disc errors and had difficulty opening the tray to retrieve my DVD. This continued for the next 24 hours before I let it rest an additional 48. After that it behaved as if it was brand new...until last month.

More of the same, only this time it was accompanied by an internal clicking sound that mellowed as the picture froze and eventually shut down in error.

I never had a problem with the VCR, which I used a fair amount of times, and I'll more than likely keep it around for those purposes. Suffice to say I'll be looking for another DVD player after spending the last two years in agony.

You've been warned -- and judging by past reviews -- clearly by more consumers than just myself.

2 out of 5 stars Half of it still works.......2005-09-17

If I had paid money for this thing, I'd be upset, but it was a gift, and it's worked reliably well for a year.

VHS side still works fine for the kids movies, but the DVD player started having trouble reading disks, and you'd have to push the button to have it try, try again... After it tries to read the disk about 3 times, the whole unit powers itself off. Static is loud!

That DVD roulette game went on for about a month, until, one day, it stopped reading any disk at all. We used to flip through photos from CDs on the television all the time. What a great feature.

Now the DVD door won't close at all. It is perpetually waiting for us to insert a disk it can read or recognize. Every since the days of VHS-TV combos, I have been VERY wary of buying 2 things in one box, because you if half stops working you lose both components to a repair shop.

Anyway, chances are this will be the last Toshiba product we buy. I don't hold a grudge against the company, but my wife is sworn off them entirely.

Any suggestions on a stand alone DVD player would be graciously accepted.

3 out of 5 stars Works well ... Mostly.......2005-04-22

I've had this Toshiba DVD VCR combo for well over a year. Everything is still functioning very well. I've found it very easy to setup, use and program.

The VCR part is the weakest of the system and after a few months of use it developed a VERY annoying squeak that will drive a person insane while watching or recording any tape. It doesn't always do it though, like when you bring it in for repair (of course). Luckily I use the VCR half very infrequently.

I think I paid around $80 for it, so I guess it's not too bad for a less expensive combo unit.
