Customer Reviews:
For the price............2007-12-25
Bought refurbished by Samsung for $112! Can't be happier. If the unit had any problems, Samsung fixed them. The VHS transfer went flawlessly.
I have TimeWarner in NYC. Recommend that you use S video for connection between cable box and unit. Not supplied. Cheap 4 ft av cables came with unit No batteries either. Manual was Xerox copy not original.
This unit records everything that you can see on your screen.
There is one potential problem, not with the unit. You must read the manual to install properly as one has to change settings and imputs etc.
If you don't know the difference between an HDMI cable and a component cable , have someone install it for you.
My brother saw mine and the price, he is going to order one today.
Excellent product for the price.......2007-12-24
I'll be brief. Easy to use. Good quality. Everything works. Excellent value. Copying all my old home movies to dvd etc.
Good value, but HDMI difficulties.......2007-12-19
I've had this combo player for a month now, and overall it's a good unit. The recoding in VCR mode is good, and the DVD recordings are excellent. Playback in both modes is fine except for a problem with the HDMI output that I still haven't resolved. I can get the HDMI video to work just fine while displaying the setup menu, but every time I try to play a DVD, the screen goes black (the sound works fine). My workaround was to hook up the component outputs instead--the video looks quite good this way, but may have been slightly better using HDMI.
Remote is difficult to read.......2007-12-17
I was able to connect the DVD player quite easily and it works well. However, the remote control is very difficult to read and use. The buttons are very small and they are all the same color. It is not something you can use in a dim light. I feel it could have easily been made more consumer friendly.
SAMSUNG DVD/VHS Combo - Nice Gear.......2007-12-14
Purchased this Samsung unit after checking reviews as well as being impressed with our new Samsung LCD TV. Already have a Panasonic DVD/VHS (and two at my job in technical support); yes, also good units, but a little unwieldy (especially menuwise), so I decided to give Samsung a try. I haven't done lots of fancy things with the unit yet, but very impressed with recording and playing quality, good menus (like the TV), and easy to use. As an aside, in my job I have found DVDs/CDs burned on other units can ALWAYS be a problem (usually a disc/finalize/operator error, not the unit, ahem...) This Samsung seems fine with everything Ive played on it. One reviewer mentioned electrical smells, burning, etc? Had no problem there either. As advice, I'd say any unit that has vents, give it some breathing room top/bottom/back - makes it happier. I have the Samsung at the top of my stack of video gear for convenience anyway. No worries. About the tuner-less option: as the tuners on other units don't let you time record the higher number cable stations (HBO etc), I don't miss the tuner. Saves $$$ too. People here seem dismayed it has no tuner. Advertising clearly says it doesn't have a tuner. If you dont have a cable box or separate tuner dont buy this version! Again: this unit does not have a tuner! Nuff said. I highly recommend the Samsung DVD-VR357.

HDMI port not working .......2007-12-21
Product is Ok, Huge disappointed to find out HDMI port is not sending signal out.
Requires TV remote to change Line Input to be able to use.......2007-12-10
Only problem is that I have to use my TV's remote to change the Line Input to 2 to be able to use the DVD/VHS. Have a satelitte dish and it uses Channel 3. Called Samson'sCustomer Service and they didn't have a great explanation as to why this player worked this way. The technician was polite and English was her first language which was a nice to treat to be able to totally understand her. Also the remote for the DVD wouldn't program my TV so I could use just the DVD remote to change the line input. Technician checked to see if other codes were available but only had the one I was using (Emerson TV). I have 2 other samsong combination units and they don't require the line input change. Perhaps it is because this is a tunerless unit?? Thank goodness I could find the TV's remote or I would not be able to use this unit. If I'd known about this quirk I would not have purchased the unit. It does have a good picture and playing DVDs and tapes are okay. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new player so quess I will deal with the line input problem
Whoops! It won't record DVDs!.......2007-12-02
I bought this because I thought it would help convert my VHS tapes to DVD. I doesn't! It only records on VHS, it won't write DVDs. Don't make the same mistake. I'm sure it's a good unit, but it may not do what you are looking for.
Research carefully and thoroughly.......2007-11-30
This is not a product for everyone. A couple things to keep in mind:
=If your television has a tuner and you *don't* plan to record one show while watching another, this may be for you.
=If you remember that with connections, digital is digital (optical, HDMI) and that you will need separate connections for your VHS output, this may be for you.
=If you can use logic in connecting items (optical output is for digital sound only), then this may be for you.
This system is not designed for coaxial input. There are full instructions included with the device, and also at the website, for specific questions you may have.
Technology is migrating to HDMI, et al, the way it once did from 300 ohm to 75 ohm connections. If you want to see things more clearly, improve your technology. It does come at the price of change, and some find that price too steep.
Convert your "legacy" VHS tapes of family events, etc., to DVD or digital format now. You will find it much easier later to manage and play this material back.
The Samsung V9700 is very easy to set up. If you do not presently have the proper connections on your TV set, it might be time to upgrade the TV. And if you can't connect your high quality digital output to your VCR and dummy it down, there may be a reason for that...do you play your 78 RPM record on your audiophile Bang and Olufsen, or do you crank up your Victrola?
In all seriousness, I unboxed the system, took my old DVD player and VCR out of the shelf unit, connected the inputs, tested with a home-made DVD and a commercial video. Life is great!
Now, off to buy 1080p TV to *really* enjoy the V9700!
VCR did not work at all.......2007-11-11
We bought one of these. Could not get the unit to read a VHS tape. Tried another VHS tape still would not read tape. VHS unit did not turn tape at all either for any function (REW, PLAY, FF etc).
Took it back to vendor (not Amazon) and got another unit. Had the exact same problems with new unit. We ended of buying a third unit with same results.
What a disaster and waste of time!

Customer Reviews:
DVD & VHS Movie Player.......2007-11-24
I'm happy with this combo.
With my Target Trutech I couldn't watch any of the new music videos and DVD movies; This combo plays them all.
Has all the standard features and some nice ones I like.
EZ view allows a one button push for viewing DVD movies as a standard, widescreen, fit, zoom...
Useful VHS search features such as fast forward/back to the zero counter. Or doing a search that will pause and show each spot recorded on the tape.
Good quality remote!
There's no TV tuner so you cannot directly record TV to VHS. But as mentioned before you could patch it (connecting your old VCR) but its not as convient as having one already built in.
It may not play your home movies on CD-R, since it only plays the newer
formats: MPEG4 and DIVX.
Overall, I'm satisfied for fact that I'm watching current Movies, music videos, an occasional recording off the TV and all at an affordable price for a combo.
Disappointed.......2007-07-12
I bought this as a replacement for one I had had for several years. One feature I do not like is the fact that there is no pause button on the VCR.
Tunerless player.......2007-05-24
The Amazon description and the Samsung box fail to mention that this player lacks a tuner. From the instructions:
"This DVD-VCR unit does not have a TV tuner. Recording TV broadcasts is possible via connection to cable/satellite (set-top) boxes and multi-channel video services."
Lacking a set-top box, I made the Samsung recorder workable by connection it to a broken player that had a working tuner--a cumbersome setup. Otherwise, the unit would have been unable to record broadcasts.
During its one day of use, the machine did do a good job recording and playing VCR tapes and playing a DVD.
It doesn't cost much, and you get what you pay for.......2007-05-24
I bought this machine for the VCR function (stand-alone VCRs having become impossible to find now), which was a good thing, since the DVD player stopped functioning (in fact, stopped opening) within a month of purchase. I recommend finding something of higher quality (although I have no suggestions about how to do that...)

Customer Reviews:
stylish and efficient.......2007-09-12
I was looking for a slim DVD player that would allow me to streamline my equipment in my home office. This Samsung made the grade. The unit is easy to operate and looks marvelous set on an acrylic shelf above my HD player. Much better than the old one that took up too much space and didn't fit into my decor.
WORTHLESS.......2007-08-08
We have hardly used this player and already it is broken. The DVD door will not open any longer, and to remove our son's DVD we are going to have to take the whole thing apart! We were disappointed from the get go with how SLOW it worked. It takes a long time to load and skip scenes. NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY! Buy another brand altogether. When we replace this one, WE WILL!
Horrible Quality, Very Disappointed.......2007-06-15
I purchased this Samsung DVD-VCR combo in March of 2006. It worked flawlessly, until a year later. Now most vhs tapes won't play (constant lines, sound goes in and out and tracking doesn't work), and now the dvd has quit working. It will only play certain dvd's, for most others (especially ones by Universal) it makes this horrible sound while trying to read the disc, and eventually, a screen comes up saying "dvd is not playable- please check disc". I have checked the discs that are so-called "unplayable" on my stand-alone dvd player, my computer dvd player and even on my portable dvd player, and the discs worked fine in all 3 machines.
The best word to describe this piece of electronics is junk- pure junk. I thought Samsung would be reliable, as I had purchased a Samsung tv many years ago that still works! It's sad that the quality of today's electronic products are getting worse and worse. I will be replacing this thing- and dumping it in the trash. It's not even worth giving to Good Will!
quit working, avoid at all costs.......2007-04-27
DVD player plays sound but no video. This happened after a little over a year of limited use.
A piece of junk.......2007-02-25
I bought this in November and am deeply disappointed. The VCR did not work, it played sound, but no picture. The DVD player displayed subtitles no matter what I did. After several torturous hours with the Samsung customer service, they finally agreed I had a problem and had me mail it back to them (at my expense). I received the same machine back, and nothing was fixed.
I refuse to argue with the Samsung customer service people again, I am junking this machine,
Product Description
This "two components in one" unit allows users to add both a DVD player and VCR to their home theater systems in the shelf space of one unit. Designed according to the needs of the consumer, the DVD-V2000 offers user-friendly features such as the ability to watch a DVD while recording a television program and a simple remote control that automatically detects media and switches to meet the users needs.
Amazon.com Product Description
When space or convenience demands simplicity, combi players step to the fore. Requiring only two hookups (from a TV or cable box to the unit and from the unit back to a TV), the Samsung DVD-V2000 brings four-head, hi-fi VHS recording and playback alongside the quality and ease that make the DVD format so great. The unit also offers parental controls, 20-track programmable memory, and a bookmarking function.
Video Features
The DVD-V2000's component-video output is ideal for use with the latest high-resolution televisions (and a standard composite-video output works with most older TVs). Chapter Digest simplifies access to DVD scenes by generating representative thumbnail images for each of a disc's chapters, and motion zoom enlarges the picture without distortion. The VCR plays back S-VHS tapes at full VHS quality, and provides commercial skip, dual-azimuth four-head recording and playback, HQ and luminance video noise reduction, quick start, end search, one-touch recording, and an auto-fit recording system.
Audio Features
The DVD-V2000 is compatible with standard CDs, audio CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and discs encoded with MP3 audio files. A 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter ensures optimal decoding of all disc formats, while 2x audio playback lets you hear the movie or music while you search, where most other DVD players are mute. The player's Phantom Surround processor simulates surround-sound effects using only two speakers.
Connections
In the video realm, you get the works: standard composite-video, S-video, and premium component-video outputs for the DVD player (one set each), as well as two sets of composite-video inputs and one RF (cable-type) input and output for the VCR. You have the choice of optical or coaxial digital-audio outputs to feed a surround-sound signal to a Dolby Digital-decoding or DTS-decoding AV receiver.

Samsung DVD VCR.......2007-08-20
This is an excellent vcr i did not by it new but second hand and i couldnt be happier it is a little bit noiser then my previous vcr but it has smooth picuter and excellent sound and good tracking i couldnt be happier with this machine it looks great on my new lcd tv So if anyone is looking for a decent dvd vcr combo its great not as good as m pro vcrs downstairs but pretty close so i give this machine an A++ great for a second room in your house
I've been quite pleased with it.......2006-12-15
I've owned one for about three years and I still use it quite a bit. I'm not so sure about the excessive noise issue, but then I'm not especially picky really so perhaps it's attrocious by audiophile standards and I just don't know it.
It is very much like a DVD player and a VCR separately only in less space - push a button and it becomes the other rather then an integrated solution for both. It does seem to support DVD+-R, VCD, SVCD pretty ok (though some (S)VCD encodings can throw it off) including reading CDR/CDRW and DVD+-RW, which is always handy. It is approaching obsoleteness a bit in my sphere of caring, but I consider it a good backup for old collections. It does seem a bit "in the raw", possibly with the abillity to confuse people who aren't that used to higher technology with the state switches between VCR/DVD and being a little obscure about bookmarks, chapters, etc. It's not exactly a steep learning curve for someone growing up in the gadget generation, but I would hesistate to recommend it to people who require extreme levels of user-friendliness and very elaborate explanations about what to do when rather then just probing out what might work reflexivly until it becomes obvious.
Good!.......2005-08-24
I have had this Samsung DVD-V2000 DVD-VCR Combo for about three years and though it had had the occasional minor electronic glitch I never had any major problems with the DVD player and I didn't find the DVD player or the VCR to be too noisy unlike my old VCR which was extremely noisy! I pretty much enjoyed having this DVD/VCR combo and being able to watch my favorite movies and TV shows on DVD and use the VCR when I needed to tape something and the only time I have ever really had any problem with DVDs skipping was when the discs were dirty and needed to be cleaned.
DVD V2000 buggy.......2005-05-29
I have to aggree with most of the reviews here. The VCR/DVD combo is nice and VCR playback is good. BUT I have major problems with skipping even on new DVDs since the day I got it. Problems have persistently gotten worse. I should have returned this item long ago.
Ok....Sometimes.......2005-05-12
I've had this unit for about 8 months. I've had very few problems with dvd skipping or anything like that. My VCR portion works fine. But recently, I've been having a problem with this thing actually reading dvd's. It stopped reading dvd's a few weeks ago. However, since I was still under the manufacturer's 1 year warranty, I called Samsung, and they gladly offered to replace/fix my broken unit in less than 14 days upon them receiving my current one. According to UPS, I'm supposed to be getting it in tomorrow....let's hope it works!

Tech Talk
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.
What's in the Box
DVD player/VCR combo, remote control (with batteries), power cable, AV cable, printed operating instructions
Warranty

Nice but Noisy.......2007-07-05
Works well and has nice features but is noisy. A number of other reviewers made comment on the noise and they're 100% correct and this is from a man with less than perfect hearing.
Don't buy it!!.......2006-12-11
I bought this Samsung DVD/VCR combo because I have had good Samsung products in the past, and I needed a black unit to match my other components.
I hooked it up through my home theatre system, but it only plays through the home theatre speakers if I'm playing a DVD, but not a VHS tape. When I asked Samsung's tech support why that was they replied VHS doesn't have that capability. Hmmmm, my other VHS player did...how odd.
Also, everytime I play a VHS tape, it eats the tape!!!
Also, no slow motion capability for the DVD player!!!
I'm very disappointed with this unit.
Horrible!.......2006-08-02
I never thought a piece of electronics could inspire so much hatred in me.
1st - It distorts the aspect ratio on my (very typical) TV. Messing with the settings changes distorts the problem even more but doesn't fix it.
2nd - No search buttons on DVD. Instead you have to hold down the track change buttons. God I hate that!
3rd - The search thing doesn't even work like its supposed too. You hold the button for a long time and the thing just gets really confused, spins for awhile, then spits you out to another track. And all i wanted to do was rewind a few seconds.
4th - It takes forever to load or do anything and won't play even slightly damaged discs that work fine on other players.
If you buy this you are asking for pain. Stay away!

Samsung DVD/VCR Combo.......2007-04-04
I was very happy with my experience. I needed this product by a certain day and the delivery was quick. I also used the ups website so I could track my package. I'm glad that I was provided with this option through your website.
Absolute JUNK!!!.......2007-03-23
This product follows an interesting trend of well known respected companies producing absolute junk. You probably will better buying no name products these days.
HDMI output died in two days, VCR and tuner have horrible picture quality and are not upconverted so you need to use two inputs on your monitor. DVD player when it was working would not read most of my DVD recordable media. Save your money. Even if you find this refurbished for less than fifty bucks, it is way too much money.
Free would be too much to pay for this thing........2007-02-22
With this one purchase I have lost all confidence in Samsung. Another of the once great OEMs that has apparently fallen to rampant consumerism.
Out of the box this thing sounded like a remote control model airplane when I plugged it in, and as I cycled through the menu I quickly found that the VCR just wouldn't play...I tried 3 different tapes but none would advance or play. I see other people complaining about this and I should have checked here before buying but I was on the road and it looked like a good deal with the HDMI and all.
From the look of the customer service rep at the store, I suspect a lot of these units come back. I had much better luck with the Phillips combo unit I replaced this dog with, and at 25% less than this soon to be obsolete Samsung unit.
Total garbage........2007-02-21
I wanted this unit for its HDMI output but it didnt work when I brought it home and hooked it up. The player made this horrible buzzing sound, the DVD drawer would not open, and the VCR wouldnt play. Thats not so good I think. Took it back to the store and got something else that does work and its not a Samsung!
DO NOT buy this unit!.......2007-02-20
This unit is junk, plain and simple. I bought it, and after only a month of moderate use, the laser system on the DVD player went out, kaput. Samsung customer service was friendly, but the only thing they would do - I guess this is standard procedure for the junk electronics being made now - was to repackage it and send it off to a repair facility; at my own cost, of course. Based on what I've read in other reviews, apparently I'm not alone. I realize people tend to write only when they're not satisfied, but what happened is totally unacceptable. When the guy at Samsung customer support told me the laser was shot, his only comment was, "It happens." Apparently, even he knows they're junk. If I can stop only one person from buying this, then I consider this review a success...buy another brand; don't buy a Samsung.
Average customer rating:

The DVD-VR300 makes it easier than ever to time-shift your TV viewing, save treasured broadcasts, archive your library of home videos, or share your creations with friends and family. Further, the combo recorder offers unprecedented format flexibility, handling DVD-RAM, DVD-R, and rewriteable DVD-RW optical media.
Samsung has developed its own multiformat technology that grants the DVD-VR300 the flexibility to support all three major DVD recording formats, each bringing its own advantages and capabilities. You have the option of recording straight from the television in either format (disc or tape), as well as being able to record from VHS to DVD and vice versa with the convenience of one easy-to-use machine. (Copy protection may prohibit recording of most commercial DVDs.)
DVD-RAM is the most technically versatile recording format available to DVDs and can even adapt to the DVD-RW standard for playback on older DVD players. It allows mixed storage of video, audio, and other types of data from both the PC and the audio/video worlds. DVD-RAM's nonlinear read/write characteristics allow convenient features like time-shifting and time-warping, which means you can start watching a program from the beginning while the end is still being recorded. Rewritable DVD-RW and write-once DVD-R compatibility lend the DVD-VR300 the broadest available DVD Forum-backed compatibility at the time of its issue.
Front-panel audio-video inputs offer easy access for connecting external devices and the unit also offers analog and digital DV (FireWire) inputs accessible from the front panel.
The unit also supports audio playback for an array of popular formats, including CD, CD-R/RW, and MP3 CD. Additionally, the player has the ability to play JPEG CDs and Kodak Picture CDs for onscreen viewing of digital photos. Full-motion video, still images, backward compatibility with VHS cassettes, all your favorite music--the DVD-VR300 is quite a device.

OK if you understand its idiosyncrasies.......2007-02-19
I found this machine to be OK once I understood its little quirks. It is a little touchy, but the issues can be worked around.
First, about discs. I found that my machine likes Memorex DVD-RW 2x, and Fujifilm DVD-R 8x. Once you find a brand of disc that works reliably, stick with it.
Second, about recording. I found that the machine sometimes has trouble reading DVD-RW discs that are 100% full of data. For example, if I recorded 2 hours of video on 2 hr speed (SP), the disc is obviously full. Sometimes when inserting the disc, the machine would not read the disc properly, and give an error message "The disc cannot be played or recorded". Even after reformatting the disc, I would sometimes get this error message. I end up tossing the disc and using a new one. This went on for quite a while until I figured out that if I set up the recording speed so that the disc is not full, the problem never occurred again. So, if I want to record 2 hrs of video, I set the record speed to 4 hr speed (LP). The disc is only half full of data, and the machine boots the disc reliably. If you are recording on timer and using the AUTO speed setting, then set the recording period so the disc is not full. So, if recording a 2 hr video on AUTO speed on the timer, set the machine to record for 2 1/2 hrs. This will force it to use the 4 hr speed (LP) instead of the 2 hr speed (SP), and the disc will not be full.
Next, the remote. I agree that it is a poor design. I have not found any firm solution to this problem. However, I found the remote to work best if I hold it in my lap, and tilt the front of the remote slightly upwards, toward the machine. And I don't sit at too far of an angle from the machine. But I still sometimes have to press a button a couple times before the machine will recognize the command. To me, this is not big problem.
So, after understanding the little idiosyncrasies of this machine, I am pretty happy with it overall.
I wish it had a S-Video output instead of Composite Video, but I found the picture quality to be very good if I enable progressive scan.
The coaxial digital audio output plays very nicely with my 5.1 home theater audio receiver. The standard RCA jack audio outputs are connected to my TV, and work fine.
I also have a large VHS collection that I want to transfer to DVD, so that is why I went for a DVD-VHS combo. There are others out there, but I went for the DVR-300 because it has a coaxial digital audio output instead of optical (the single optical input of my 5.1 receiver is already used by the optical output of my satellite receiver).
I hope this helps. I was frustrated with the machine at first, but now at least I can make reliable recordings.

Poor Remote and Input jacks.......2005-06-03
I returned this item (and bought the Panasonic DMR-ES30VS) for primarily two reasons.
The first is the remote control is almost nonresponsive. You have to perfectly aim it at precisely the right spot on the unit for it to work. Hence, buttons tend to get repeatedly pushed at "varying" angles just to get a response. This so VERY annoying and it will drive you nuts!
I thought perhaps the batteries that came with the remote were just bad...? but a replacement set was no better. Then when I saw other reviews of this same experience, I knew it was just a bad remote design. What I find so odd is I have a Samsung DLP TV and its remote (similar shape and design) does not exhibit this phenomena.
Second, there is a lack of INPUT jacks on the unit. It's as if the Samsing engineers decided this unit and a TV would be the only entertainment appliances a consumer would own. It has component and S-video OUTPUT jacks, but the only INPUT jack is a crummy composite. For those people like me who use their one HDMI jack for their cablebox, the lack of good INPUT jacks was a huge disappointment.
The Panasonic I echanged for by contrast at least has
S-video INPUT jacks so I could connect my cablebox more effectively to my DVD recorder. IMO, it is also a superior picture and its user interface more intuitive.
Very nice!.......2005-04-05
I bought this unit so that I could save stuff from my TiVo and copy some old VHS tapes to DVD. So far, so good! I have made about 20 DVD recordings. The only problem I ran into was when I was trying to copy a movie from VHS to DVD (this movie is not available on DVD yet) and it wouldn't let me copy it because it is copyrighted. I really wanted to make a DVD of it, since it is no longer available.
Another nice thing is the DV input on the front. I have a Canon mini-DV camcorder and was able to easily transfer video directly from the camera to DVD. There is also a full set of AV inputs on the front. Very nice for temporarily hooking up an older camcorder or (gasp!) a Beta VCR! Yes, I have LOTS of Beta tapes that I plan on converting to DVD.
The menus are a lot more user-friendly than the DVD recorder my parents have. I didn't really have to read the manual... but it is worth reading. There are some neat features: Pressing REC once starts recording, pressing it again starts a record timer... adding 30 minutes each time you press REC. That's a nice function for unattended recording. Also, most of the functions are easily accessable by remote without going into menus... including recording speed (quality) and one-touch dubbing from DVD-VHS or VHS-DVD. Another nuce touch is the clock. Most DVD players do not have a clock on the display, but this one does (it needs to know the time for timer recording).
Also, my television is a Samsung. The remote will control the TV as well (and other brands). There is even a dedicated TV Power button. Very nice for reducing the number of remotes needed to power everything up/down.
All of the DVD-Rs I use are Verbatim brand, and I have had no problems with them at all.
Save yourself the frustration and buy a different brand.......2005-02-07
I actually have an earlier model Samsung DVD player, and it, along with other Samsung models at the time, had a horrible skipping problem on many DVDs. Samsung's support was almost non-existant -- I found out there was a firmware upgrade for the player, but not through their website (where I couldn't find any help whatsoever), but through a friend with the same problem. HOWEVER, the firmware upgrade did not resolve the problem, and the last I heard, there was a class action suit filed here in Pennsylvania (which I received an invitiation to be a part of, but could not participate in, I think because I no longer had the receipt). Considering their lackluster customer support, I would advise anyone against buying any DVD player from this company. Players are much cheaper nowadays anyway, and you can get an excellent Sony or Toshiba for a modest price.
Very touchy machine.......2005-01-13
I was able to play only one of five DVDs I made on this machine. When recording from an attached video camera, everything looked fine, picture appeared on TV going through the DVD/VCR, Record light is nicely lit, after finishing the DVD it played well on the Samsung. But when trying to play back either on my Sony Vaio or my Apple iMac, all I get is a soundless black picture. When I recorded on DVD-RW from a videotape inserted in the VCR, I could play the result on my Sony. But the next tape I recorded only caused Microsoft to keep asking me to send an error report when I tried to play it on my Sony. My Apple refused to recognize it as a DVD. Unpredictably incompatible. When I called the Samsung helpdesk they told me to call the computer manufacturer. I guess I would have to call both Sony and Apple then? Crutchfield was the seller for this product and they actually have a very helpful helpdesk -by the name of Darren- According to him I should try a different brand DVD disc. I tried Memorex instead of the Office Depot and found that this brand of disc solved the problem. Question for Samsung: Why don't you have this on your troubleshooting page in the manual? Why does the dealer know this, but you don't?

The DVD-V2500 is a combination component that handles an unprecedented array of video, audio and still image formats. The integral Memory Stick interface accepts this increasingly popular media for playback of MP3 music files, or immediate viewing of digital images from a digital camera or PC. Samsung's new 3: 2 pull-down progressive scan system brings incredible accuracy to pictures as well, and can be used with an increasing array of digital televisions that offer these superior connections. The incredibly advanced DVD-V2500 is as elegant as it is versatile, with a sturdy 17" wide component chassis and innovative new blue-hued information display centered on it's striking silver front panel. From family photos to blockbuster movies and music, the DVD-V2500 delivers it all in a single easy-to-use format the whole family can enjoy.
Amazon.com Product Description
Samsung's silver-finished DVD-V2500 DVD-VCR combo is perfect for all your favorite movies and music, featuring VHS recording and playback, high-end component-video DVD outputs, built-in MP3 and HDCD decoding, and compatibility with photo CDs so you can enjoy a slideshow of digital pictures right on a television. It even boasts a Memory Stick interface right on its front panel for even more direct media access.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-V2500 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DVD-V2500 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
Using the Memory Stick interface, you can instantly transfer MP3 music files from portable media to hear favorite music through the full fidelity of a home-entertainment system. Digital photographers can show the whole family their work by removing the Memory Stick from a compatible camera and plugging it directly into the DVD-V2500. This is also a handy way to ferry MP3s from the computer to the living room.
The VCR delivers hi-fi stereo sound and quasi-S-VHS (QSPB) playback, which lets you view S-VHS cassettes--normally only playable on high-end S-VHS machines--in standard VHS resolution. Auto clock set saves hassle, and its dual-azimuth construction uses two pairs of recording heads rather than one, each optimized for a specific mode (one for SP recording, the other for EP).
Top-of-the-line component-video outputs (for DVD only) help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. A set of left/right analog-audio outputs for each format (DVD/VHS) channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. From DVD, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. Want to enjoy surround effects from your stereo speakers? The unit's Phantom Surround Processor provides just that.
A 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter ensures optimum decoding of all disc formats, including HDCD (High-Definition Compatible Digital), a 20-bit encoding method used on many commercial CDs to deliver better sound than is possible through standard CDs. Another handy feature is screen-fit feature, which ensures that DVD images are configured perfectly for both widescreen 16:9 televisions or traditional 4:3 TV sets.
What's in the Box
DVD-VCR combo, remote control, 2 AA batteries, user's manual, 2 stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cables.

Works as Advertised.......2004-07-18
Works good, plays homemade DVD-R as well. It's a little slow switching menus.
Great Value except 2 warranty claims.......2004-05-22
I bought this unit because of it high value rating. The VCR stopped working after about a week and was fixed under warranty at a local shop in Hawaii. Now, exactly 1 year after I bought it, the DVD part is broken. Luckily it is still under warranty but I have to ship it to NJ.(I now live in Florida). The unit has worked great and it was a good deal for $130.00, even with the two warranty claims.
Low on features and buggy.......2004-02-21
I got this thinking I would save myself on some connections and components. Well, here is what has happened in less than a year of use (only played one VCR tape in it):
1) LOTS of problems with the unit not ejecting DVD and CD's. Will just sit there and spin...and have waited for hours before trying to get it to eject. Sent it back to Samsung, and their comment (after I paid S&H) was "couldn't reproduce problem". GAHH!!!
2) Poor options on CD/MP3 playback. There is absolutely NO random/shuffle option. On screen MP3 title selection is nice, though.
Paid $250 for this one year ago.

Dud.......2003-09-15
The DVD player stopped working after 5 months with less than adverage use. I noticed another reviewer experienced the same problem. When you put a DVD in the player is says "LOADING" for a couple of minutes and then says "NO DISC". We probably have watched less then 20 DVD movies on it... Total drag.
Samsung V2500 only 3 stars.......2003-08-22
I bought the V2500 in April and already have problems with the DVD Player. It states the disc is LOADING, but then states NO DISC. It still plays CD's though. The remote only works if you are directly in front of the unit, which is very annoying. I would not buy this again.
