Poor Product - Very Bad Customer Service.......2007-12-21
Video and sound froze for approximately 4 seconds every 10 minutes when watching a movie in DTS audio mode. Same movie worked fine in 5.1 Dolby Digital. When the sound froze, a very loud noise would be emitted from the speakers. DTS movies have played perfectly on my system through Panasonic and Toshiba players.
The first customer service representative informed me that my Samsung DLP TV did not support DTS (DVD recorder connected to TV via HDMI); therefore, the player would not work in DTS mode. I informed him that the audio was connected to my DTS certified receiver via an optical cable and this should not be a factor. I called back the next day and the customer service representative passed me to a Level 2 technician. I was told by this technician that the DVD-R160 did not support DTS audio. I had to explain to him that DTS was written on the case, DTS was in the specs. and they are advertising the recorder to play DTS. After I educated their Level 2 technician I was told that I had to send the recorder into Samsung to get repaired. The return period was 30 days for the vendor and I called the vendor 31 days after purchase. I requested that a new unit be shipped to me from Samsung, but was informed by Samsung that I had to pay to ship the defective unit to their repair facility and I would have to wait approximately 2 weeks to receive the repaired unit. It has been over two weeks and I have just been informed (by checking their web site)that the recorder is in the mail.
In summary I purchased a new recorder that did not work, did not receive a new replacement recorder as a result of this defective unit, had to pay shipping to get it repaired and had to wait over two weeks to have a DVD recorder.
I will never purchase another Samsung product after the experience I had with their "customer service".

Poor product from a poor company with the worst customer service I have encountered for anything I have ever purchased. I originally purchased the DVD-R135 which I returned after a couple months of use (would not record). They sent back the DVD-R after three months of waiting. This product stopped recording or reading disks after a couple times recording. We tried to contact customer service and was told that they would call us back during the week - of course nobody has called or emailed. We are trying to get the $64 labor fee waived, but can't get anyone to help. STAY AWAY!!!!

I replaced a Liteon 5001 recorder with this Samsung R160. Despite a quirky and rather small, oddly-shaped remote (it has an "anykey" that brings up submenus. Yes, it actually says "anykey" on it!) it performs well. The upconverting HDMI 1080i/p output works fine and the upconverter shows almost no video artifacts with fast motion content. I'm using DVD +RW discs to record content from my satellite receiver and then transferring content I want to keep onto write-once discs. I've tested Verbatim and Ritek media and the Sammy prefers Ritek.

below average product from below average brand with below average customer service. finalizing discs are sometimes a problem, is very fussy to brand of disc, and found that a lot of discs made on this recorder are not playable on most other dvd players. also, flexible recording time can only be used with timer. not so with panasonic, which i am very happy with.

Pleased with overall performance of DVD Player. Playback available in 1080P if desired or as low as 420P. Have not used the dvd writing function as of yet but am going to transfer old VHS to DVD very soon.
Remote is basic, however, unlike some other DVD Players out there, this model has all the browsing functions you need on the remote as well as on the face of the player.
HDMI out as well as any other connection you might need.
Once again, you cannot beat Amazon's prices. Smooth transaction!

After reading about how great Oppo DVD players were for their upconverting feature, I bought a refurb model that matched the specs on my small screen HDTV. The unit is truly AMAZING! My DVDs never looked this good! The refurb worked perfectly and my only disappointment was that it took two weeks to receive the unit.

At first I was a little skeptical because I have never heard of the brand, but after spending over $5000 on a plasma, I needed something nice and easy. This DVD player was so easy to connect. And it came with an extra HDMI cable! How great is that?! The quality is really good, but I did have a couple problems...it has frozen, mid movie on brand new DVD's and doesn't play some at all. All and all I think it's worth the money for all the features.

I spent a lot of time trying to decide which up-converting dvd player was the best choice for me. I could have bought a player locally for under $100 easily but I was concerned about the quality of the player. I am totally satisfied with the Oppo and amazed at the difference in the picture quality. If you are looking for a quality up-converter here it is.
Terrible DVD Player Terrible Service from Amazon.......2007-12-03
This product stopped working less than two months after we bought it. It just stopped playing DVDs. When I called Amazon, I got a call center in India and Amazon refused to let me return the item and told me to call the manufacturer. I kept asking to speak to a supervisor and was put on hold three times. I never did get to speak to a supervisor but was finally told that Amazon would "make an exception" and let me return the defective item. But this was of no help as the item is no longer in stock. When I asked the call center employee when it would be in stock, he had no idea and told me to just keep checking the website and call back when the website said it was in stock. I kept asking for a timeframe of when it might be in stock and he had no idea. I asked if I could get a similar DVD player instead, and he kept saying "Yes, you can get a similar DVD player" but he obviously did not understand what I meant - language barrier issues - because he kept telling me to call back when the item was in stock. I kept asking if I could get a similar one and we went round and round until I gave up. I asked if I could get a confirmation number so I wouldn't have to go through this all over again the next time I call and he couldn't give me a confirmation number or promise a confirmation e-mail and just said he would make notes in my file. When I asked for his name, it took ten minutes of him spelling it for me to get it, and I still am not sure I have the correct name. ("T" as in tower. I hear "P" as in "Power." I say "P?" No, "T" as in "Tower" and so on.)
I would never order electronics from Amazon again.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.
- High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 720 lines.

Beware - don't buy.......2007-12-26
Do not buy a Samsung Player. We bought one, had to upgrade it to see 'Rise of the silver surfer' and it broke. So right now we have a player that has a Blu-Ray disc stuck in it and the only thing it ever does is greeting us with 'Hello' on its display when powering on and saying 'goodbye' when powering off. We tried to got support but unfortunately all they said is, that it is all our fault. Actually we have been accused very badly for doing something illegal. We got the feeling that they would have loved to put us in prison for trying an upgrade....
Save Your Money -- And Your Sanity.......2007-11-23
Samsung gets two stars - one for the amazing picture and one for the sound quality. The actual player, however, is terrible, buggy, unintuitive to use and unreliable. The remote control is so poorly designed as to be useless in a darkened theater room.
Also, Samsung refuses to stand behind their product and replace defective units, even though they know this product should never have shipped. Mine has refused to play actual Blu-Ray discs for months now, but all Samsung wants to know is when I'll sen the unit off to them for weeks-long repairs, and, more importantly, how quickly I can get them a check for $160 for the privilege.
It's the first--and last--Samsung product I'll buy.
Samsung Blu Ray blues! Bad luck or bad product?.......2007-11-08
We have a 50 inch Sony SXRD 1080p television and the high def images are breathtaking. We adopted Blu Ray as our format choice and found this Samsung player to be priced about right when we bought it in the first half of 2007. Like most Blu Ray players, load time is over 30 seconds and if you eject and re-insert the disc, the player loses it's memory and you have to remember where you left off. However, Blu Ray images were impressive until a few days ago when the player decided that it was no longer a Blu Ray player and it will ONLY play a standard DVD! A little internet research reveals that this seems to be a common problem with this model. Samsung has a 90 day labor warranty (which they said they will stretch to 6 months...Wonder why?!?) and 1 year parts. Mine is on the way back to Samsung and fortunately, the repair is under warranty. I had to pay $15 shipping, but it could have been worse. Unhappy that a 6 month old piece of electronics has failed and I hope Samsung will suck it up and fix all of them that break for at least one year. As for me, I'm heading to COSTCO to purchase a Sony Blu Ray player because they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee for as long as you own the player!! Be sure to keep the receipt, though. Samsung makes some great products but our BD-P1000 is NOT one of them. Newer models may be less trouble prone, but I'm heading back to Sony.

this player is great. blu-ray movies look absolutely amazing on this thing. of course you need to update the firmware on it, but that is a good thing. why buy a player that gets outdated? this one will keep up to date with the technology.
Disappointed.......2007-08-19
The system has problems - it won't play certain Blu-Ray discs and distorts other DVD's when played. I am told that I can download a patch to fix the problems, but the download doesn't work unless you create an Image of it requiring special software like Nero 7 which I don't have. All told the process is extremely time consuming. The BD-P1000 is not really a "plug and play system". On the whole, the process isn't worth the work to make the system usable and I recommend buying something that works the first time instead of buying a problem, unless you would rather do upgrades instead of watch movies.

I picked this up when it was on sale for around $150. It also came with 10 movies. So far I have had no problems. The HD movies are really nice. It also makes regular DVD's look really good too. I'm actually thinking of buying another if the price is right.

I also experienced the same problem about pauses and delayed audio at the middle part of the movie, but all it needed was firmware upgrade.
I called toshiba to request the disc for upgrade and i got it within a week.
In my opinion, there is no visual difference between 1080i and full hd.
It comes with hdmi cable, and it did its job, you do not have to buy an expensive one.
HD-D3 PLAYER WORKS PERFECTLY.......2007-12-03
This model HD-D3 is the Costco version of the HD-A3...It's identical.
I had the same problems with this model as the previous reviewer did. I hooked my unit up to the internet via the ethernet port and downloaded the firmware update. It was a very large update. Following that upgrade, the unit worked perfectly.
The only problem I have with HD DVD players in general are the disk themselves. They must be perfectly clean before you view. I find even brand new disks need to be cleaned. I never get the pauses, skips, and stoppages if I clean the disk first. If you rent from a box store, or Netflix, they are especially vulnerable.
I also have an A20 as my 2nd tv is 1080P. It works great providing the the disks are clean, not damaged, the and firmware is current.
I am also getting a BLU Ray since finally the prices are coming down. This way I have more titles to choose from, and if either fails, I'll have a player for either! Enjoy!!!!
Toshiba HD-D3 DVD Player.......2007-12-02
I got this HD DVD player from another store and it came with two free DVD's. The player had trouble playing one of the DVD's that it came with- freeze framing and distorting image and sound. I contacted Toshiba and they said it was a software problem and sent out a DVD with updated software to upload new programing into the unit. I did it and it still did not function correctly- same problem. I returned it to the store. Maybe I just got a defective unit but it seemed to respond to all the commands slowly. I am hoping to have better luck with another Toshiba model...
