Shopped around ALOT before I bought this at Best Buy (179.99) and included a free extra battery with AC charger. This unit has it ALL:
AC charger, DC charger for car lighter outlet, slim remote, BIG screen with swivel, dual headphone jacks, VERY LIGHTWEIGHT(about 2 lbs) compared to many that are 6-7 lbs. Perfect for flying or for those long airport lay-overs. Better performance than I expected for twince the price!
Better than I thought.......2007-01-03
Got this bad boy for Christmas. (A gift from me to me) I totally love it! This is my first portable DVD player, so I don't have much to compare it to.
Pros: The big screen is great, clear, bright and adjustable. The video input is a great feature. I love the magnetic hold downs and the swivel and lay flat screen! The USB and CARD readers are a nice touch, although not something I will use much. 2-3 hour battery life is great, and since it includes the cigarette lighter plug, you can use it on a plane or car for as long as you like.
Cons: The buttons feel a little cheap and plasticy, and as the disc slows down as the laser reaches the outer parts of the disc (towards the end of the movie), the player emits a high pitch whine that can be annoying. 4.5 hour battery charge time seems really long.
Conclusion: I paid $180 for it, and feel its worth every penny, as I could not find anything else above 7 inches for less than $200. It is a lot of gadget for the money.

Beautiful picture, sound........2007-10-14
I bought this Initial DVD player refurbished and I couldn't have asked for a better picture -- much richer and more detailed than almost anything out there. And you can actually listen with the stereo speakers, even in the car. I know portable DVD players are pretty fragile, but this one lasted a good two years, mostly being handled by my five- and 10-year old boys. I'm looking for another.

You get what you pay for...This is a piece.......2007-11-22
This is the 3rd one of these we have had in our van in the last barely 6 months. The 1st one had issues with skipping and the sound. The second one the sound went out within a week and the 3rd we had the longest and worked the best until last week. The sound goes out off and on randemly and we were on a trip back today get in our van to leave and nothing, it won't power up or do anything. We had a guy who worked for the dealership initally install it and he gave us a "good deal" or so we thought. He went out of bussiness 2 weeks later so we had been dealing with sound shop but they do not carry this product so they talk to the manufacturer and get us new ones for them to install but they are not really even wanting to do that anymore cause they have done it for us 2 x's now and they get nothing out of it.
We are really in a bad position and not sure even what to do.

Poor Photo Feature .......2005-12-03
I bought one of these units back in March from online Wal-Mart. The picture quality for DVD's was excellent. The sound was good too and it had many features not found in other competitors. I really started to like this unit a lot until I placed the CF card from my digital camera into their card slot. Again, the picture quality was excellent when in full screen mode. When viewing in thumbnail mode, the pictures were quite blurry. This was okay since I wouldn't normally use this mode anyway. What really turned me off was the slide show feature. Each picture is displayed for 30 seconds regardless of the picture's resolution. There was no button to force advancement to the next slide or to alter the time slice. This was unacceptable and the reason I returned the unit.
Initial DVD player.......2005-10-28
When I got this DVD player I thouht it was great, the features are nice and the i/o ports are many. After about 3 weeks the super sensitive switch that shuts the lcd off when the lid closes started shutting the screen off even when the lid was open, the weight of the white plastic pin held the switch down. Then the next week the hinges gave out, they are solid metal hinges anchored to very soft and brittle plastic, very annoying.
Better than a laptop........2005-09-29
I have a Powerbook G4 with a 17" display that I was using to play DVD's. I thought it was too big and the battery life too short. I decided to purchased a dedicated portable DVD player. I was pleasantly surprised by the workmanship and the quality of the unit. I would highly recommend this player. I recommend the 10" screen.

The IDM-1250 does have an A-B repeat mode to it, and what I like is when playing cd's you can keep the screen closed,and the advance buttons and pause and play buttons are on the front,so you don't need the remote to change to different tracks.The picture is just as good as the Philips with 12bit video dacs,and you get the added features of the multi-card reader and USB port.The sound is not bad as far as voulme through the built in speakers,but like other players using headphones makes quite a difference.I would recommend this player to those who like a larger screen portable,as a side note it will read dvd-rw in the vr-mode.

We bought this unit to replace a Polaroid that gave out after about 6 months. Fortunately we had purchased the unit thru Target.com with the $30 extended warranty so we got a full refund of our purchase price.
Initially (no pun intended ;-) I was concerned about some of the comments I had seen from other reviewers. Ill address them individually below.
- The comment about having to always select dvd or usb or card isnt present on my unit. It does prompt when you first turn it on, but without selecting something other than dvd it quickly defaults to dvd and just starts playing the dvd.
- The comment about large jpg's freezing the unit. Well I guess it depends on what your definition of freeze is (and Im also a little unclear how your 20D had a picture on an SD card given the 20D has a compact flash slot). On my unit I have taken the SD card straight from my canon S500 (7.1 Megapixel) and put it in the player and looked at photos. Granted it takes the unit awhile (ie. read slow) to read in the large photos from my camera but it does it without crashing the player etc.
- The build quality of the unit seems much more rugged than the polaroid it replaced so it appears to be a good unit, but unfortunately with portable dvd players the true test is the test of TIME.
Overall the reason we bought this player was because of DIVX. My daughter is a Wiggles, BluesClues, Hi-5 junkie. I record all of these shows on the Tivo (in Best Quality), transfer them to my PC, run them thru DirectshowDump, then thru the Divx encoder. I can get nearly 40 shows onto one DVD when they are all DIVX and the quality is just fine.
Ill revise this post later if the device dies an early death, otherwise if you dont see a post from me you can safely assume that it is still running without incident.
I purchased this unit thru Target.com which has Amazon as the backend processor. The unit arrived very quickly and with good packaging as Ive come to expect from Amazon.

Disappointed in the Initial 10.2" Portable DVD Player .......2007-05-12
I had an Initial portable DVD with a smaller screen. When it quit working, I wanted only an Initial to replace it as I loved that player! I am very disappointed in this 10.2" player and if I had it to do over again, I would have tried a different brand.
The picture quality is great.
The sound is terrible. You can have it on full blast and STILL the volume is quite low. If I have it in the ktichen while I'm making dinner or doing chores, I can't hear it if there is much noise.
Also, almost every DVD I've put it in won't load the first time. These are brand new, never played DVDs. I put one it and it will continue to say loading and makes a squeaking noise. I have to open it, push on the DVD, maybe take it out and put it back in . . . a pain. OR sometimes it will still show open after I've closed it.
It's just a real pain and I would have rather paid much less money for something that would work better. Definitely wouldn't recommend this one and I won't order one on-line again because of shipping costs to receive it and what it would cost to send it back. If I had purchased it directly from a store, I would have returned it the first day.
Stopped working for no reason!.......2007-04-14
I used it sporadically for about a year and rarely travelled with it.
Now it won't read any of my DVD's.
That is $300 I could have spent towards a better brand.

Bought this for my 3 yr. old a year ago and it is still running perfectly!.......2005-07-12
I typically don't take the time to review products, so that should tell you how strongly I feel in favor of this DVD player. I bought it for my 3 year old son a year ago primarily to take on trips. We've been on 7 plane trips and 3 car trips since then and it's held up great. The screen and audio look and sound as good as they did when we first got it. Needless to say, there are a ton of scratches on the case since I allow my son to have complete control of it, but that hasn't affected the performance at all. Even though I didn't intend to use it for a home DVD player, I actually have it setup in my son's playroom so that he can watch DVDs. This is a great portable DVD player. I recommend it to anyone with kids who wants something that's going to last.
