4 out of 5 stars DivX yes DVD-R no.......2007-12-19

I was looking for a movie player that would support DVD-R discs and DivX/XviD movies.

I originally bought the smaller SD-P1850 which worked fine for a month until the motor stopped working. Replaced it at the store with the SD-P1900 (the 1850 was now unavailable). Unfortunately the SD-P1900 does not handle DVD-R discs very well, frequent hangings and skippings, very bad for the movie watching experience. I was using Memorex and a Philips SPD3000CC DVD-recorder (Memorex DVD-R is a certified media with the DVD-recorder). I called Toshiba support who recommended using some other brand of DVD-R media but they could not tell me which one:-) I bought a stack of Sony DVD-R discs (also certified for use with my DVD-recorder), these work better but still not perfect. Normal DVD's work fine though.

Some reviewers have complained on the low screen resolution. Text looks awful but images (movies) are properly down-sampled and look very nice. The colors are great. Laptop monitors may have higher resolution but normally don't have as vivid colors.

The sound volume is a bit low and a tad thin but works well enough when there is not too much noise. At least my daughter does not complain.

The unit might be heavy and clunky with the battery mounted below the player but I think battery life is good. A 12V car cable is included so you don't need the battery when using the player in the car.

pros:
+ DivX/XviD support
+ vivid colors
+ long battery life

cons:
- does not handle DVD-R media (Memorex, Sony) well

5 out of 5 stars excellent product, .......2007-12-07

This has been an excellent high quality product. A ton of features, good screen size, clear picture, easy to use, and seems well made and durable. I only have a couple very minor complaints, the glossy outside does show fingerprints easy, sound quality from the built in speakers could be better (it's pretty "tinny" sounding, kind of like a small handheld radio) but i use headphones anyway so thats not important to me, and although it has a screensaver, it only works if the disc is stopped, it would be nice to have when you are listening to a music cd and there's just the static track listing. overall i am very happy with it and would definately recommend it, especially for the price!

3 out of 5 stars Worked Well till it Died.......2007-12-06

The Toshiba worked quite well for the limited time it was operational. I bought it for a cross country flight and an extended hotel stay. The unit worked perfectly until one evening I plugged it in to charge. The next morning I found that it had not charged at all. Come to find out that the AC Adapter was faulty. Now I had no way to charge the unit which ment I could no longer use it. I called Toshiba who told me they would order me a new AC Adapter. That was in August. After reapeated calls to both CSRs and Managers I am still being told it is on back order. Unfortunately I was unable to return it within the 90 days required for most returns because the box and other parts were in storage waiting for us to finish our move. Just Beware.

4 out of 5 stars Meets Basic Needs Competently.......2007-10-31

Used primarily in Montessori classroom of 19 students, 6th thru 8th grades. Used to view educational dvd's, including lectures and documentaries. Often used by one student, with or without headphones. Sometimes, three or four students gather around. The Toshiba SD-P1900 does very well (video, audio, ease of use, durability) in this situation. Wish battery life were longer, but will usually make it through the day without requiring a recharge.

I keep forgetting to turn the player off, and so more than once have drained the battery without realizing it. The on/off switch is on the side, and I wish there was a reminder warning of some sort.

2 out of 5 stars Bad picture quality.......2007-10-11

This DVD Player has bad picture quality. Initially i did not want to spend a lot as i fly only 3-4 times an year. The look and feel of this product is better than lot of others available in the market. 10" players are slightly pricey so i thought i will settle with this one. When i checked it in CircuitCity using a sample DVD they had, the picture looked ok, but after it arrived home i watched a movie that i watch in my TV and was dis-appointed to see how bad the picture resolution was. I immediately decided to return this one and look for better products. Philips PET 1002(10") was best rated in the market. So I went ahead and bought it from Amazon and returned the Toshiba. I recommend buying 10", anything less than that is too small and for a price difference of $55 between this one and Philips, I am happy that I got a better product and bigger size.

1 out of 5 stars sputters along for a year or so & then dies.......2007-11-29

It "worked" for little more than a year, but never satisfactorily. The sound was always tinny & the machine was overly sensitive to flaws & scratches in the DVD, often freezing up (usually at climactic moments in the film), which required me to transfer the DVD to my computer or home player, where it worked fine. Also, whenever I used the controls to rewind, fast forward, pause, etc. I knew I would soon pay the price of the film freezing up. So it only worked with perfect DVD's & then only if you watched the film straight through. Then one fine night, without warning, the motor stopped spinning & that was THE END.

3 out of 5 stars 9.25.07.......2007-09-25

I purchased this dvd player, I had to send it back to the company that sent it to me, for the lens on the dvd player was defective, on the first time of using it. It randomly chose what dvds it wanted to play. But after i sent it back, i received another one, with no problems. It works fine.
Only thing is that you have to be delicate with it, especially with the cover to where the dvd is placed, and the lens that reads the dvd. Anything little thing, could cause a scratch and prevent it from working.

5 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good......................2007-07-08

We purchased this unit several months ago. We got this unit for our 3 year old to watch movies on when we travel. It was a replacement for a Kawasaki unit that had recently died on us after a year or so. I expect the life of this unit should be better but I would not expect anything more than two years. My daughter uses it at home as well for maybe 30-60 minutes a day. The picture is very good, better than the Kawasaki.

4 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2007-06-26

I bought this for my boyfriend because he travels a lot and so far it's been great. The sound isn't that great without headphones, but he only uses it with headphones so it's not really an issue.. The screen is huge! Just about as big as my laptop screen. Battery life is decent. If it's fully charged lasts about 3 hours.

4 out of 5 stars Fits the bill and answers the mail!!!.......2007-10-17

I have purchased Audiovox DVD players before and, to be honest, they have not been problem-free, but nothing bad enough to make me want to throw it in the garbage. I really like the features of this DVD player and works perfectly for my two sons on road trips. It keeps them from driving me crazy and the remote comes in handy so they can both "push the buttons". I recommend the player for price, features and the fact it comes with all the wires, straps and cords you need to hit the road. I didn't give the player 5-stars simply because I don't think Audiovox is the greatest brand ever when it comes to portable DVD players, but they have the best packages for the best price.

4 out of 5 stars so far so good!.......2007-12-20

I have done months worth of research on portable DVD players, and finally I decided that Audiovox had the least amount of problems associated with it not reading discs, or the screen breaking etc. So i went to Costco, and bought 2 of these, for $129.99 each. One is for my parents, and one for me. I've opened mine, and it works very well.

My favorite feature is the USB port. We record a lot of TV that gets stored as MPEGS on our computers, so this way, i can just throw a show on my memory stick, plug it into the DVD player, and voila! I can watch a show in the kitchen while cooking, in the bathroom while taking a nice hot bath, or anywhere else!

The speaker volume goes very high, and if you don't need to see what's going on, you can watch from across the room!

I did notice that the response time does depend on what format you are using. If I'm using the USB stick, things take a while, and if you push buttons too fast, it will freeze. No problem, turn it off then back on, and start again. DVDs work pretty quickly, and the remote works well. (Remote uses an everyday watch battery, so easy to replace). CDs take a while to load, and sound like something is breaking inside until the music starts. Then it quiets down. if you have CDs or memory sticks with MP3s in it, don't put them in different folders. The player gets confused if they're not in the main directory.

So far I haven't found anything majorly wrong yet. I'll find out how the SD memory card slot works when my parents open theirs. I'll update with anything else I find!

Audiovox only gives a 90 day warrantee on this, and Costco's return policy is the same. If you buy it on Amazon or Walmart, and I'm sure Target and other stores, you can buy 3 year replacement warrantees, but they're a little more expensive and you have to pay shipping. The warrantee is worth it though! Most of these units, no matter who makes them, will not make it to 3 years.

2 out of 5 stars If all you need is a DVD player..........2007-11-30

If all you need is a DVD player, this system is great. The picture quality is nice, the price is low, the design is sleek and the case seems really useful.

But that's the problem. The case will only hold the machine securely (or close at all) if the battery is removed. So, if you want to watch in the car and strap the nice case to the seat in front of the kids, the machine has to be plugged in! Doesn't seem very portable. If your children are done watching it by battery and you are ready to put it away, you have to dissemble it to get the case to close. Not really acceptable for me.

Also, we have, in the past, hooked the Nintendo up to our portable DVD players. This does have an AV In, but I couldn't get it working. I admit, it may be my cord, but it worked in my last machine. I will likely return this machine and try a different brand.

It includes dual headphone jacks so you can share your movie experience with a partner, a rechargable battery with up to 4 hours of battery life, and a cigarette lighter adapter for powering the player while in the car. In addition to DVD movie and CD audio discs, it's also compatible with DVD-R, CD-R/RW and VCD discs. You can play discs burned with MP3 and WMA digital audio files, and it's also DivX Home Theater Certified--meaning that it's compatible with video burned to disc using both the DivX video format. You can also view photo slideshows from Kodak Picture CDs with JPEG images. The integrated multi-format memory card slot is compatible with Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia (MMC), Memory Stic, and XD Picture Card formats, enabling you to view JPEG images and unencrypted MP3/WMA audio.

With the Digital Picture Zoom interactive feature, you can select an area of the picture you want to zoom in on and magnify it. It can also be used to expand letterbox-only films to increase the viewable area on-screen. Other convenience features include slow motion (1/8, 1/4, 1/2), parental locks, and 3D virtual surround sound. It includes both input and output composite AV jacks.

Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resolution.......2007-10-09

I got this Toshisha Portable DVD Player as a birthday gift last month. I took it with me on my vacation to the Caribbean, and I have to say that this is the best portable dvd player available in the market. Excellent picture resolution is almost like washing a movie on HDTV. Best investment and awesome gift. Toshiba did it again in delivering top performance electronics.

2 out of 5 stars While it was working it was excellent.......2007-08-08

I had this DVD player for a few months. We really got our use out of it. It has great features, options, picture, sound (in comparrison with other units), etc. I had no complaints about it. However, I started noticing after about a month that the unit would turn itself on while it was plugged in charging the battery, even with the unit closed. The only way to get it to stop was to unplug it completely and take the battery off. Which was fine if you were done charging it.... Then, after about 1 month of that happening it would be playing a movie and the power would just turn off. I would turn it back on, try to find the place in the movie we were watching and continue and it would be fine. Then after appx. another month it just started to turn itself off and it wouldn't turn back on, not with the power cord, the battery, the remote, nothing would work. Then the next day you would try it and it would power up just fine. All I can say is THANK GOD I BOUGHT THE WARRANTY! They told me that they don't carry this model anymore and they are replacing it with anything else of my choice.... now I have to figure out something else to get! It took days of researching this one!

3 out of 5 stars Good LCD display, otherwise it sucks.......2007-06-05

I have no complaints about the quality of the LCD screen, probably the best available on a portable player. Believe it or not, I prefer watching DVDs on this device than on my CRT TV set.

The problem here is that everything else about this DVD player is really bad.

It's really thick and heavy. Barely portable. The smallest Sony Vaio notebook weighs the same as this DVD monstrosity and is a lot thinner. Although the LCD on this is actually better for watching DVDs.

When you turn the DVD player off, it loses it's place in the DVD and then you have to waste a lot of time figuring out how to get back to where you left off. This is pretty pathetic. Surely it doesn't take much battery power, if any, to have one little memory chip keep track of where you were on the DVD while the power is turned off.

Another lousy feature, shared with all other portable DVD players I've seen, is that the fast foward button does double duty as the move to next scene button. Thus if you want to fast forward, but forget to hold down long enough, ZAP, you've lost your place. It comes with a remote control which has the proper buttons, but it seems pretty dumb to have a remote control for a device you're suppose to use on your lap or on a table directly in front of you. All the controls you need should be directly on the player, not on a remote control you can easily lose.

Finally, when do you get the fast forward mode, if you fast forward, or rewind, at any faster than 2X speed, what you see on the screen does not match where the thing is actually going to go to when you push the play button again.

It's too bad that there is no quality in the portable DVD player market. Toshiba has a new unit out, the P2900, but it looks identical to this model so it probably has all of the same flaws.

4 out of 5 stars Fine player.......2007-02-22

The display is incredible. The animated movies that the kids mostly watch come across the screen with remarkable detail.

On the down side: With the speakers on the side of the screen (not below), finding a case/car mounting system that would accomodate its width was difficult. I did finally find one at Bestbuy that only took slight modifications. As other have said, this player does not resume play after returning power to unit. So turning off the car and then returning, you start at the beginning of the show or mess with it to find where you left off. Lastly, louder volume would be nice.

Still a nice player with a nice slim design. The battery is designed nice too (good for 3+ hours new). I mention the negatives, because they are the main reason I look at reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-02-17

Amazon.com Product Description

A road warrior's dream, a home theater's able centerpiece: Toshiba's SD-P2700 DVD-Video/DVD-Audio portable DVD player gives you the best of both worlds. The compact unit is distinguished by its sleek appearance, its 8.9-inch polysilicon widescreen display, and its high-resolution 1,024 x 600-pixel screen. The TFT (thin-film-transistor) active-matrix display delivers film-like images rich in detail, color resolution, and contrast.

Besides media playback versatility--it handles everything from DVD-Video to DVD-R, VCD, MP3/WMA CD, and a host of image formats--the SD-P2700 offers Toshiba's Super ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and employs an 10-bit, 54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter to cement its guarantee of stellar image quality. A sleek, credit-card-sized remote control simplifies operation.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Further, the SD-P2700 incorporates the Toshiba exclusive Digital Direct LCD Drive, which minimizes conversion artifacts by streaming the video signal directly from the MPEG decoder to the LCD screen driver in the digital domain, bypassing D/A-A/D conversions that would otherwise degrade image quality.

Toshiba's digital photo viewer displays images right on your television in a variety of popular formats, including Konica, Fuji Photo, Kodak Photo CD, as well as standard JPEG files--there's even a Secure Digital/MultiMedia Card slot to further simplify viewing. An onscreen display walks you through the process of making your own slideshows, in which you can preset the viewing time of each slide as well as zoom, rotate, and pan each photo.

Leading-edge 24-bit/192 kHz digital-analog converters from Analog Devices delivers exceptional 2-channel DVD-Audio frequency response and dynamic range. DVD-Audio discs deliver high-resolution audio, capturing and reproducing all of the nuances of the original performance and offering high-resolution surround sound as well as stereo. (DVD-Audio resolution is available through the analog audio outputs only.)

A pair of built-in headphone jacks let you watch or listen with a partner, while Spatializer N-2-2 ULTRA and Natural Headphone virtual surround sound algorithms simulate surround through 2 speakers or 1 set of headphones. The built-in stereo speakers (1.5 watts x 2) grant headphone-free listening through high-efficiency titanium drivers in bass-reflex enclosures for more full-bodied sound than typical portables produce.

The SD-P2700 passes both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals through its coaxial-type digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The supplied lithium-ion battery blends seamlessly with the player's cosmetic profile and offers around 3.5 hours of uninterrupted movie or music entertainment. The battery also charges quickly, in just 3 hours.

What's in the Box

3 out of 5 stars Plays MPG files nicely.......2006-01-22

The main reason I purchased this player was to have a portable dvd player that has the "divx" playback feature (not mentioned in the US literature), but you can read about it at DIVX.com. It won't play .avi files, you have to rename them to .mpg to play them. So far I've been able to play mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg4, xivd, divx encoded files. The player features are better than average. The remote is nice. The whole unit feels a little on the cheap side. I've had no real issues yet. I like this one better than my go-video player (it has a smaller lcd, at a lower resolution)

1 out of 5 stars Beware.......2005-08-29

I received a new Toshiba SD-P2600 for Fathers Day Last year from my kids. After fourteen months of ownership and less than twenty five hours of use, the player would not turn on. This unit was manufactured in March, 2004. Since this unit is factory service only I mailed it to Toshiba. Several weeks later I was informed that the main board was burned out and the cost or repair was $466.00. That is in addition to the $70.00 to look for the problem. If I had it repaired the total cost invested in the unit would be $1,135.00. This total, of course, does not include the $49.00 I had to pay in shipping and handling to return it to me. Run, do not walk, away from this product. Just because the retail price may indicate that it is comparable to high end lines like Sony and Panasonic, the quality is more like the cheap lines sold at drug stores.

4 out of 5 stars NICE LITTLE MACHINE, 2 PROBLEMS.......2005-06-04

Nice little player, carries well, battery charges OK, but pity locked into region 1, no hacking codes yet, but plays region free discs OK. Speakers very ordinary, headphones are essential for listening. Never freezes, picture great provided you sit square on to the screen, peripheral image not good.

1 out of 5 stars Freezes often-do not buy.......2005-03-27

My wife and I bought this player for our kids (for long car trips) for Christmas 2004. We are both working professionals (teacher and policeman). This player started to freeze during playback from the very first dvd played. It got progressively worse over a period of 3 months. We only played excellent quality and brand new dvds in this player. It now freezes during almost every playback. A complete reboot (turning it off and then on) is required to get it going again. This "freezing" occurs when using the battery, the electrical cord or the car adapter...it makes absolutely no difference. We thoroughly read and followed the instructions before using the player for the first time. We also referred to the manual when we ran into this freezing problem, but no mention of a fix there. We contacted Toshiba USA and Toshiba Canada with negative results even though the player is in mint condition, under warranty and with all the accessories. Our advice to you...don't buy this model or any others from Toshiba.

3 out of 5 stars Nice player BUT.......2005-01-17

This is an excellent player, with many nice features. The screen is sharp but, and this is a very big but, the viewing angles are so narrow as to render this almost unusable and is really unacceptable in today's world of LCD screens. It's a shame because the unit is well-designed and well-made. The inclusion of Component and S-Video outputs allows you to use it as player with larger screens which is a major plus but not enough to negate the narrow viewing angles. If the only way you plan on using it is sitting still on an airplane for several hours, you'll be happy. If you move around, or want to put it in the back seat of your minivan for 2 kids to watch, this is not the one for you-or them.

    5 out of 5 stars Just fine.......2007-06-26

We have had this for over 3 years - got it as a gift. My 8 yr old has used it on a regular basis, and we use it on trips as well. We've never once had a single problem with it. I was actually pretty shocked to read the other reviews. It's been great for us.

1 out of 5 stars broke easily, poor quality, nonexistent customer service.......2007-04-11

The lid (over the DVD compartment, containing the buttons and electronics) snapped off easily, due to cheap plastic hinges. The wires connecting the lid to the body became twisted, and the player would not work. Polariod customer service was unhelpful -- they said this happens "often," and suggested it was our fault, that the unit had been mishandled. The cheap plastic hinges holding the lid on were a problem from day one. They said no parts were available to fix it and it was unrepairable (unit is less than one year old!). They offered a replacment for $95 plus shipping, and I can get a new one (if I wanted one) for $99. What a rip off! We will not buy another from Panasonic.

4 out of 5 stars works really well for me.......2007-01-17

We bought this about 2 years ago - use it almost daily without problems. Traveled on plane as well without a hitch.

Pros: swivel screen - good price - plays all media (not sure what happened to the other guys machine)

Cons: battery somewhat loose - can come disconnected easily - volume control touchy - often needs slight adjustment to get sound back

We did have the 'upside down screen' thing happen - no big deal - just hold down "mode" button

Overall pretty good forp price - sure you can get better ones, but you will pay alot more

2 out of 5 stars Nice swivel screen.......2007-01-01

That's the good part. You can rotate it in any direction, which means you can view it in a variety of situations. Let's see - oh yeah, the sound on the player is nice.
Now the bad part? The LCD screen died after 1 year, and they wanted as much to fix it as the cost of a new player.
Not worth buying for 1 year of ownership - and I really took care of it.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the $$.......2006-11-24

This has been a great DVD player for us for over 2 years now. Has made car trips tolerable with a toddler. Just recently the picture all of a sudden appeared upside down. We were mystified, but finally figured out that if you hold down the MODE button for a couple of seconds, it's fixed. Best kid-friendly electronic purchase we've made.

For home theater enjoyment, other audio features include built in DTS and Dolby Digital Decoder with 5.1 channel audio out for surround sound enjoyment, built in speakers and Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing. The DVD-LA95 is the ultimate in portable DVD convenience, letting users take all their favorite digital audio and video entertainment with them wherever they go.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's DVD-LA95 offers the versatility of a portable DVD player alongside the performance of a sophisticated home-theater component--and you can use it as both. The player handles DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, and DVD-RAM playback--as well as standard and recordable CDs, including MP3-encoded discs. Its slender chassis holds a massive, 9-inch widescreen (16:9) LCD screen and a built-in rechargeable battery (good for about 2.5 hours between charges).

Designed to take full advantage of both audio and traditional video DVD formats, the DVD-LA95 delivers the immersive six-channel surround sound of the DVD-Audio music format. DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound, in both multichannel and stereo. Because the DVD-Audio signal is too high-resolution for the digital converters in current surround receivers (and also as an anti-piracy measure), the DVD-LA95 performs its own decoding of DVD-Audio signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate this feature.

Audio features include DTS and Dolby Digital decoding with 5.1-channel analog- and digital-audio outputs, built-in stereo speakers, and Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing (which boosts the center-channel level by 6 dB during playback of Dolby Digital 5.1 discs, since most of the principal dialogue is channeled there). Advanced Surround Sound (VSS) simulates surround effects from any two speakers or from headphones. Other features include chapter preview, high-speed smooth-motion scan in forward and reverse (up to 100 times normal speed), repeat mode, title/chapter search with marker function, skip forward/reverse, auto power off, and resume play.

In addition to playing favorite DVD movie and music discs, the DVD-LA95 also plays video recorded on DVD-RAMs. DVD-RAM lets you record high-quality MPEG-2 video on DVDs, offering fast data transmission, speedy random access to chapters, and rewritability up to 100,000 times.

5 out of 5 stars Great Portable DVD Player.......2006-12-14

I owned my first Panasonic DVD-LA95 Player trouble-free for several years, and it worked great until I dropped it and cracked the screen. Getting it fixed was a hassle, and I agree with the complaints about service. I gave up on the service angle and just bought another used one. They sell on eBay for prices ranging from $100-$160.

For decent (lengthy) performance, get one (or two) of the auxillary batteries. I'm talking about the large flat one that attaches on the bottom of the player. There are 2-3 variations of this battery ranging from 5600 mha to 6800 mha. The largest one will, along with the 'little round one' that comes with the player, play movies for about eight hours.

The batteries charge together when it's plugged in, so you can just leave both batteries installed. Never have to take them off.

The video quality is outstand, but on a plane you need earphones. For the best experience in the air, I got two sets of Bose Quiet Comfort ear phones and a splitter so that my wife and I could both hear the audio. The Bose headset really cancels the outside noise and we enjoy several movies during long flights. Sound quality is outstanding.

I'm very pleased with the Panasonic DVD LA95.

2 out of 5 stars Great picture, terrible quality.......2005-08-08

Beautiful picture quality and great features - too bad I can't recommend it due to lousy reliability and worse service policies. The first laser failed about 14 months after I bought the unit. I replaced it for about $300, and that laser failed in 8 months. Panasonic doesn't seem to have many (if any) dealers or spare parts - so your only recourse is depot repair which is slow, expensive and unreliable.

Love the picture but this thing is just too fragile and not worth the hassle - avoid.

3 out of 5 stars broken player rats!.......2005-04-13

We have had this player for about 2 years and loved it until it broke. We bought the extra battery pack which gave us aproximately 5-6 hours total playing time. It went on a lot of long car rides and plane trips with us. My son at age 6 dropped the player and then we had playing problems. I had a very difficult time getting service information. Finally I sent it to an indepentdent dealer who told me nothing could be done as Panasonic no longer makes the spare part and even if it did it would cost about 400 dollars. The service tech said they only make so many spare parts and when they run out that is it. I think this is shameful for such an expensive product. I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY 12 YEAR OLD SON FOR CHRISTMAS OF 2003. HE HAS HAD IT FOR OVER A YEAR AND USES IT JUST ABOUT EVERY DAY. IT IS GREAT!! IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE BATTERY LASTED A LITTLE LONGER BUT, THAT IS OKAY, AS LONG AS YOU PURCHASE AN INVERTER FOR LONG TRIPS.

2 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware .......2004-12-11

When my Panasonic, no longer under warranty, needed a repair, I discovered that I had two options, either throw it away or buy a rebuilt player. The problem was a dead backlight, something that should have been a simple repair, but due to way machine is designed turns out not to be. I bought the rebuilt player and that was defective. It does come with a 90 day warranty, but local certified Panansonic dealer won't honor it. And on and on the story goes.

So beware, product was good, but once something happens and you enter the service system, you will experience frustrations.

Panasonic DVD-LX8 9" LCD Portable DVD Player

    Product Description

The DVD-LX8 is capable of playing back DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-RAM, DVD-R2, video and audio CDs, MP3, WMA, and CD-R/-RW3 discs. It also supports HighMAT (High-Performance Media Access Technology), a technology co-developed by Panasonic and Microsoft for arranging and using personal music, video and photo collections on recordable discs, such as DVD and CD recordable media. The DVD-LX8 features a 9-inch (diagonal screen measurement), LCD 16:9 high-resolution VGA screen and employs the Mono Arm concept, with an adjustable arm that allows for increased options when choosing a viewing angle. The DVD-LX8 also features built-in stereo speakers, a playback time of 2.5 hours and multi-format playback.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Larger than most portable disc players but still far more portable than a laptop, Panasonic's DVD-LX8 DVD player offers a 9-inch, 16:9 aspect-ratio (wide) screen whose adjustable "Mono Arm" broadens the range of available viewing angles, making the player perfect for suddenly bright and suddenly dark airplane cabins or desktop use in an office. The player handles DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM playback--as well as standard and recordable audio CDs, including MP3- and WMA-encoded discs. Its slender chassis holds a built-in rechargeable battery good for about 2.5 hours between charges.

Designed to take full advantage of both audio and traditional video DVD formats, the DVD-LX8 delivers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound of DVD-Audio. DVD-Audio software titles offer classic music titles in both multichannel and stereo, though be aware that this model plays discs in stereo only. Most DVD-A discs have compressed Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 surround tracks, however; these can be passed through the unit's digital-audio output to a compatible surround receiver and speaker system.

Audio features also include DTS and Dolby Digital 2-channel decoding and multichannel passthrough, built-in stereo speakers, and Panasonic's Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing. Advanced Surround Sound (VSS) simulates surround effects from any two speakers or from headphones.

Cinema Mode reduces the detrimental effects of screen glare from ambient light, rendering cinematic colors in pictures that are gentle on the eyes. Further, Cinema Mode improves the visibility of details in dark scenes by automatically adjusting picture contrast. High-speed, five-step Smooth Motion Scan provides crystal-clear forward and reverse scan. At the highest setting, the unit scans at an incredible 200 times normal speed. Panasonic's Dialog Enhancer boosts the center channel volume--where most of the principal dialogue emanates when playing a Dolby Digital 5.1 disc--by 6 dB.

This player is HighMAT compatible. High-Performance Media Access Technology is a standard codeveloped by Panasonic and Microsoft to improve interoperability for digital media programming between PCs and electronics devices. HighMAT provides an efficient method for arranging digital photo, music, and video collections on recordable media.

5 out of 5 stars The best you can get!.......2007-12-06

We've had ours for a couple years now and it holds up to being dropped, repeatedly started and stopped, the speakers work great still and everything still function normally, even after the kids beat the snot out of it.

I had an older Panasonic player that I upgraded from, but I kept the extra battery from that one and used it on this one. It's the battery that works in conjunction with the "tube" shaped battery in the back of this player, but actually attaches to the underside of the unit. It provides about a total of 5 hours of playtime overall, depending on the brightness of the screen, which can be lowered for night-time use. I definitely recommend getting the secondary battery as well! The long trips with kids, make you realize the benefit of having a nice long life battery, when it's not plugged into the car or wall outlet.

Don't look at any other portable DVD players on the market. Just get this one, open it up and use it without worrying about it. You'll never regret it.

5 out of 5 stars More Expensive, but Great DVD player for Travelers!!.......2006-12-25

Sure, this is a 300 + dollar unit, with other units and biggers screens available, why consider this DVD player, simple, Quality. This has a nicely adjustable screen, decent external speakers, easy use, and great (really great) battery life with addtional battery pack. Roughly 8.5 hours with the extra pack, enough to watch 3-4 movies easily. I own a toshiba and phillips portable units, and have extensively looked around at other DVD players, and for the money that you pay for this unit, you will get your pennie's worth. Enjoy this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Love this DVD player!.......2005-12-01

This DVD player is the best that I've seen on the market. My husband is an electronics freak and he first saw this at a Bose store in Columbus, OH (for $600!). We looked at so many portable DVD players and this was by far the one we liked the most. It's definitely worth the price and you can shop around online for the cheapest price. I paid $379.99 online with no tax or shipping. The only thing I didn't like about it was the short battery life, but you can buy the extended battery for it.

    PROS:
    Picture quality
    Sound
    Screen manueverability
    Screen size
    Extended battery accessory available

    CONS:
    Price
    Small battery life (2.5 hrs)

and this is the best portable DVD player on the market. Paid $399 with no shipping or tax. Spent an extra $60 to extend the battery life to 8.5 hours. Also, not sure why it does not have dual headphone outlets (the smaller one does), but for $6 at Radio Shack that problem was solved. What I love - the picture - the fact that you can lay it down flat - and the best sound of all that I have tried. I am VERY happy with this player.

5 out of 5 stars Answers I couldn't find from other reviews here.......2004-11-26

After much research, I was convinced that the Panasonic portable DVD players were the best. More expensive than many but worth the price. Seeing Nemo play on it convinced me and my spouse. Terrific screen resolution. I decided I wouldn't use the external speakers or the card slot on the LX9 and the LX8 was otherwise the same unit and cheaper. I haven't been disappointed. We love it. After reading reviews here on the LX8 and the Lx9, I was concerned about the heat discharge if it was in your lap. That has not been a problem. I was especially concerned about the short battery time on the factory battery. I opted to buy a Lenmar DVDP501 battery pack (6800 mAh)that attaches underneath the unit and does not require carrying along an extra charger. With the combined batteries I get 8 hours of play time at mid-level screen brightness, which is fine. This extra battery was definitely the way to go. Just to test it, I set the brightness at full level and got 6 hours and 40 minutes of play time. The normal 8 hours is plenty for me on any flight. Panasonic is running a special now for a free $29 travel case and a free airplane/car travel adapter), both by rebate. You won't be sorry with this player, if you get the extra battery.
