1 out of 5 stars This machine is just WRONG. KAPUT. NO FUNCIONA........2007-12-21

I have had the machine for over a year. I think you need to take a college graduate course to understand the manual. I have read and reread it many times. We finally accomplished recording to the DVD. Forget about any onscreen help. That doesn't exist. I am usually pretty technical having a experience as an electronics technician and as a computer LAN administrator. This machine is just plain frustrating. I tried to figure out the VCR section and preprogram a channel for recording a later time. Yeah...I have to take another college course for that too. My parents were looking to buy a DVD/VCR combo. I will steer them away from a Magnavox as far I can. Please do yourself a favor and spend a little extra money on something else. However, if you want to torture yourself then you can buy this and give yourself a migraine. Anything has to be better than this machine.

1 out of 5 stars Run like the wind!.......2007-07-06

What a piece of crap. It is so terribly difficult to operate and program. I've given up. I read the manual a couple of times to no avail. I'll play a VCR tape and try to copy it to DVD but sometimes it records a blue screen, sometimes TV and sometimes your VCR tape but you'll never know until after 2 hours of tape runs. And if you loose the remote don't even think about being able to fully control this thing with the buttons on the front. You can't even put in a DVD and press play unless the default selection when you put the movie in is "Play Movie".

I've built my own computers, setup home automation systems. A Computer Network Engineer by trade but this thing is out of my league. My conscience doesn't allow me to resell this thing on Ebay. It would be like selling a car that you know has major problems. But I really don't think my unit is defective just the most non-intuitive piece of electronics I've ever seen.

1 out of 5 stars junk, Not Functioned! Joke, garbage.......2006-10-12

I bought 3 of this machine and gave to two electronics genius son-in-laws.
One son-in-law barely managed to work the machine but it wasn't a great performance. One can use just as VCR not for DVD recording. One is VCR head already worn out, it couldn't adjusted by tracking, the bad screen. I complained Philips out let. It became 90 days already. Their answer is that's you expected from remanufacturing. This machine is very complicate to use for it to be functioned. I tossed about $500 for three. I learned that I should buy ONE very good machine instead of three garbages. Such a waste money, energy and time.I am very unhappy.

1 out of 5 stars JUNK-JUNK-JUNK.......2006-06-29

Open the box, hooked up, and pulled out his home video collection to start burning to DVD- After about 30 minutes the unit froze and shut down. Several minutes later we were able to recover the VHS tape but the DVD refuses to open. The unit now refuses to power on. The unit was obviously defective and returned by someone else (writing in the owner's manual)- now we are stuck with expensive paperweight as the 90 day warranty is expired.

Too loud, even when off! THen it had glitches in dvd recording. Sent it back and Amazon was great and paid for the return shipping!!!

1 out of 5 stars Magnavox repair.......2007-05-15

The dvd player worked well for 1 hour. Then the picture failed totally. This is when the pain began. It took over a week to get a customer number to enable me to return the item Promised call backs never happened. Then I returned it and it has been more than 8 weeks. Last story was this model is no longer made and they are trying to decide what to replace it with. Again a promised call back never occured. The item still has not been replaced! I would stay away from magnavox / phillips at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars I love my dvd player.......2007-03-17

I purchased this dvd player almost 2 months ago, and am very happy with my purchace. It has a great picture, good optics, good sound, but depending if there are loud noises, you may need headphones. I used my walkman headphones, and they worked just fine. I have a friend with a no name brand, and you can't basically hear it without external speakers, so this was a concern for me. The sound is suffient, at least for the size of the speakers. I can sit a good few feet away and hear it just fine. The charge lasts a really long time. Well, I never played it for more then 3 hours, but the charge still remained. Plus I always charge it up before I store it, and when I plugged the battery back on the machine after a month, it was still fully charged. It comes with a remote which is a nice feature as well. I felt it was a good choice for the money, I am happy with my purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Magnavox DVD Player--UGH!.......2007-02-25

My husband bought me this DVD player for my birthday earlier this month. I fell in love with it. The screen is a great size, picture is crisp and clear, I had these awesome headphones that when plugged into this player made it sound as if I were in a movie theater.

I only give this 3 stars because it just gave out on me 2 weeks after I got it. I thought maybe it was the plug or battery or something but those weren't the issues at all. It was just that the player stopped working. I was extremely disappointed with this.

With a name brand like this I did expect a hell of a lot more than just two weeks of pure enjoyment. Maybe it was just my luck or something.

1 out of 5 stars Buy Something Else, seriously.......2007-02-07

It didn't play and registered NO DISC with a brand new dvd installed. When I got one to work, it was fuzzy.

You have to put the volume at super duper high to even hear it.

it's pretty heavy, too. am going to return it.

5 out of 5 stars Nice DVD player for the cost.......2007-01-30

The DVD's are very quite when played which was something I really wanted. I had purchased another player elsewhere and the sound of the dvd turning was so annoying I took it back. Great picture quality and sleek look as well. Well worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculously weak features- No "time" or "time remaining".......2007-03-25

I was looking for a cheap DVD player to replace my even cheaper broken DVD player. This one actually has less features than my cheaper DVD player, with inexplicable gaps. For example, you can select what time in the movie you want to jump to, but you cannot view the time in the movie that you are at. Not to mention there is no way to see how much time is left in the movie. It's hard to understand how the designers could leave such a fundamental function out of the player. Even old VHS players can do this. Magnavox: Stupid. Very stupid.

Another problem is the lack of a 2nd video out, which my cheaper DVD player had. Not to mention 2nd audio outs. I understand these may be missing from cheaper DVD players nowadays, but the lack of a display function for time and time remaining is just mind-boggling.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Magnavox MRV640 is a first-rate DVD player and recorder, a state-of-the-art source component that's also fixed to displace your VCR. Now you can archive your home movies and edit favorite scenes to share with loved ones: use recordable DVD+R and re-recordable DVD+RW media for compiling home-video highlights or for storing TV programs, then mail them to loved ones or, with TV programs, watch them at your convenience. The MRV640 stores up to 8 hours of audio and video at varying quality levels, from sub-VHS quality to VHS/S-VHS quality, DVD quality, and full DV quality.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the MRV640 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The MRV640 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; reverse 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Top-of-the-line component-video inputs and outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video inputs/outputs bring compatibility with nearly any input source and television. One each RF coaxial video input and output simplify hookup with antennas, older VCRs, and cable boxes. The unit's front panel sports a set of inputs for your temporary AV connections.

What's in the Box
DVD recorder, remote control, remote batteries, an RF coaxial A/V cable, a stereo analog audio interconnect, a composite-video interconnect, a user's manual (English/Spanish), a quick-use guide, and an AC power cord.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty worthless. 2 1/2 stars........2007-02-25

This seems to be one of the older DVD recorders, when the kinks were still getting worked out. They're much cheaper now and hopefully better, because if they're still made like this, I have no idea why anyone would buy them. I've had it for over 2 years, and I will give it credit, it still works and has never given me any error messages or not recorded. It is, however, VERY annoying knowing it only uses +R discs; I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to desperately record something and only had perfectly good -R DVDs. The machine also loses points for being bulky, sluggish, and super ugly. But my biggest gripe with this recorder is that NONE OF THE DVDS I RECORD ON THIS WORK IN ANY OTHER DVD PLAYER. Period. I am forced to sit and watch them on this unit, and I don't use cheap DVD players. They can play DVD-\+R\RW, VCD, SVCD, Audio, and image CDs, anything but a DVD recorded on this piece of crap right here. I have tried the discs on numerous DVD players other than the 3 in my home, and in different computers equipped with dvd drives. And I don't use cheap DVD+Rs. Please, if you are considering buying a dvd recorder, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this disaster.

4 out of 5 stars I have to disagree.............never hung up on me...........2006-09-22

I even bought this as a refurbished item here at Amazon and have had no problems. The only issue I've found has been that I usually use DVD-RWs or DVD-Rs per my video recorder, but forgot that this only uses DVD+Rs.....etc.

I purchased this for less than 1/2 the original price and have no regrets. I must admit that I purchase too many electronics and stay away from brands such as Emerson and Coby..............but stick with Magnavox and Sanyo..........etc. You get what you pay for.

I can't relate to the "hung-up" problem of other buyers, but will vouch that I've had this refurbished recorder for over a year and have had no problems whatsoever. I often record onto VHS and mostly used this component to transfer it onto DVD. Worked well..........took some time to get used to..........but always did the trick for me.

I only hope it works as well for the next buyer..............

1 out of 5 stars Buyers take heed.......2006-07-09

Read the other reviews and take them to heart. This unit is a boatanchor. It played fine until it completely quit, giving the "blocked" message that seems to be a running issue, and that was all she wrote. As for recording, there were several times I thought it was programmed properly, but it failed to record. Since I always reviewed my settings, I now doubt it was my fault after reading other reviews. On the successful recordings, many were fine, but others would suddenly pixelate, and would then pick up a few seconds into the program later, or maybe a few minutes later. You could watch an hour program in about 40 minutes in some cases just due to the missing content. Name brand DVD discs, too. Meanwhile, the remote suffers from the same problem virtually all DVD devices have, the buttons are laid out by someone that has no clue what the device even does, and so you're continually hunting for the frequently used ones, while the ones you need once a year are scattered right in with the rest. Utterly unintuitive, although truthfully, no worse than any other DVD device. Ovbiously I never really got to the buttons I needed once a year, because the unit died in six months, after approximately 12 hours of recording time and maybe 20 hours of play time. That worked out to about $5.00 per hour of use. While it's a worthless piece of junk, I will admit it's the purty-est unit in my setup. They should have spent some more time on the interior of the box.

3 out of 5 stars Does the job if you don't ask for anything complex!.......2006-06-12

If you just want to record on demand, nothing fancy or in special formats, it certainly gets the job done for a great price. Paid $51+shipping for this used. The 1st owner couldn't figure it out (either the installation or use of it), so it was virtually unused. I haven't encountered any problems with simple recording on +R disks, and that's all I've tried so far. Everything I've recorded plays on my other DVD players as well.

However the major problem that even the lightest of users will encounter: the manual is horrendous. Although well organized and thorough it what it covers, the actual content is terrible. There is 1 tiny paragraph on installing it in conjunction with a cable or satelite box. I mean who doesn't have one of these - isn't that a rather important topic? I had a bear of a time getting it set up and I'm an electronics professional. The manual omits information about the remote's 'monitor' button until about chapter 10-zillion; that's the button that lets you toggle between the recorder's menu/image and the cable signal. No wonder I thought I had it hooked up wrong, I couldn't view any cable signal! Of course it's filled with grammatical and typographical errors, but even if it weren't, the content is junk. Don't demand much of this, do the simplest tasks, get ready to read the manual cover to cover, and you'll be just fine.

1 out of 5 stars "Blocked" in week 2 of use Don't buy this Lemon.......2006-06-01

AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID MAGNAVOX AVOID MAGNAVOX AVOID MAGNAVOX AVOID MAGNAVOX Avoid this Magnavox DVD recorder. First it started losing content which I thought was operator error. Then I went to open the tray to replace the DVD and I get a "Blocked" message. Well if you get "Blocked" according to the owner's manual the show is over. The end. FINIS Omega Nothing you can do about it. Opening and closing a disc tray is so very basic. All my CD players have managed to do this. All my computers do it. All our DVD players do it. My cars can handle it at 105 degrees F or minus 10 degrees F over rough road or off road. But MAGNAVOX gets hung up just sitting still in a cool room in a basement and can do no more than tell you its " BLOCKED ". I got mine as a gift and it was purchased at Radio Shack. I'm surprised they carry this lemon of a product. So now I have the hassle of having to try to get it fixed but to save you time with reading the next 27 messages. ITS NOT WORTH IT. Don't buy it. Look at the star ratings and know that most of its owners would never buy another one again. Have a Great Day !

A rechargeable battery can run the player for up to 3 hours, and you can plug it in anywhere for longer viewings. The MPD720 plays DVDs, CDs, MP3s, and more, so you can bring along all your favorite videos and music.

The screen on the MPD720 is a thin-film-transfer (TFT) display that generates clear images without adding unnecessary bulk to the portable player. The MPD720 features built-in stereo speakers and a headphone jack for private viewing or listening. For even fuller sound, hook the player up to an audio receiver through the digital optical audio connection to experience rich surround sound.

The MPD720 can go anywhere you go. Use it at home by plugging the player into a wall outlet, or run it in the car with the DC power adapter. After watching a movie, the battery can be quickly and easily recharged with the included charger.

1 out of 5 stars Enjoy Your Shiny New Paperweight.......2007-10-09

This product demonstrated its unwillingness to work as soon as I put my first DVD in it. It was so scratch sensitive that it began skipping and hanging up on one of my own films immediately. I knew that if this thing handled my own purchased DVDs like that (which I take good care of), then it doesn't stand a prayer with the scratched, hacked copies the rental places distribute. An inability to read through simple scratches is a must nowadays, given the technology these players are capable of. Lucky I was still within the warranty period, or else I'd be taking slapshots with this player against my garage door.

4 out of 5 stars No problems after 1.5 years.......2006-07-22

We've had no performance issues with ours. Have two boys, 6 & 4, who are the primary users so it's not exactly been handled with care. It still holds up well, loads the discs with no problem. My only complaint would be that for some movies, I'm not able to get the image bright enough to be seen clearly. This thing has saved our sanity on many cross-country trips to visit family. Has done well both in the car and on planes.

1 out of 5 stars Magnavox MPD720 is not for the long haul.......2006-03-03

After reading good reviews for this on Amazon.com, I purchased it February 2005. Now I am seeing the more critical reviews from the period after my purchase. The criticism is justified. Within the first 90 days, the Magnavox MPD720 was no longer playing despite no abuse - usually played from my nightstand. I sent it back to the manufacturer who replaced it. Recently I began to hear the dreaded grinding and see the now familiar mid-scene pause - it has stopped loading. So within a year, two machines failed.

I did not feel the volume was adequate from the beginning. The battery did work well on a vacation last year; however, it protrudes in such a way as to make the unit not fit in the case when used to hold it in position in a car.

Yesterday I purchased a Philips portable dvd player which was recommended on this site. It is the same company as the Magnavox, but the model looks like a completely different product so I can only hope. I do not have the budget to replace it annually.

The best reviews are not the ones from people who have just turned on the machine or are quoting the product sheet, but who have had some time to see how the machine works over time.

Thanks to others who took the time to analyze what they do and don't like about their portable dvd players. Without these informed comments, we are buying blind.

5 out of 5 stars Great little player!.......2006-02-09

I purchased this DVD player at our local Wal-Mart as a Christmas gift (2004) for my husband who was being deployed to Iraq. He used this player every single day while he was gone and did not have any problems. We have continued to use it since he has been home now and still do not have any problems. In fact, I am here to purchase the car adapter for a trip we will be taking!

2 out of 5 stars Another Broken Player.......2006-02-09

Like many of the other reviews on this page the DVD player broke after about a months use. You can hear the sound but the screen doesn't work.
Sounds like a defective product to me.

Product Description

CONSUMER ALERT: This television receiver has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009 to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the U.S.'s transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products.

1 out of 5 stars Programed not to open "BLOCKED" .......2007-04-12

Same problem as many others. The month after warranty expired it wouldn't open and said "BLOCKED". I called and was told to unplug it and press "ON" when replugging. "BLOCKED" again came up. It does not even have screws you can unscrew yourself without special tool. I lost hours of recordings when it would shut itself off during record or play modes! Over priced even if it did work for more than a few months.
I'll NEVER buy Magnavox again because of bad product and run around service guy who said "It is probably past warranty, they all should be" It shouldn't have been on the market.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!.......2006-11-22

I bought one of these little jewels new and after recording maybe 3 hours total, I couldn't eject the disk because it was "blocked". I sent the whole thing back to Philips for repairs and waited. ... and waited ... and waited. Finally, after 2 1/2 months of waiting and several phone calls (answered in India by people I couldn't understand well) and at least three people telling me to call back in one week I finally made a big enough stink to get transfered to a supervisor. The supervisor and every other operator I had spoken with to that point had verified all of my information including name, address, zip, etc. Then the supervisor told me that they hadn't sent the repaired or in my case remanufactured DVR out because they didn't have my address! Well I finally got the remanufactured one back and it lasted for get this, 95 days. That's five days more than the "renewed 90 day warranty" that came with it. Now it won't come on at all and won't eject again. OH, I have to give Magnavox credit though, this one did record for twice as long as the new one... 6 WHOLE HOURS! Save your money and save yourself a headache. This thing is a piece. I'll never buy Magnavox again.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good....functional.......2006-07-06

The interface is a bit difficult to use - definitely not user-friendly. I had to read the manual to know how to use it. It's a pretty good machine for functionality - I haven't done anything special with it other than record and play. I've done that at different speeds and haven't had any problems. No complaints.

2 out of 5 stars Purchased 2 - Only 1 works.......2006-02-03

I purchased two of these as gifts for my sons. One set up quickly and works great a month later. However, the other one will not read a disc; any disc; even the rescue disc sent to us by Magnavox. They are very helpful at Magnavox, but am disappointed to know that we have to pay shipping to the repair center. Also, I "thought" I read that we could purchase an extended warranty on these. That is not the case. Magnavox will not sell extended warranties on refurbished items. Also, if you send them for repair, they do not give you another 90 days to see if the recorder works okay; you only get the original 90 days, so if it doesn't work this first and only time, we will be out of luck. However, I should have connected the recorder prior to gift time to be sure they both worked properly.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2005-11-09

I recently bought this recorder, and after only 35 days, the DVD drawer would not open due to being "blocked" by some sort of internal mechanical device. Additionlly, when I tried to turn the DVD player on it would automatically turn off while trying to retrive the cable signal. Also, when I would record a TV show, sometimes it would only record and play for approx. 2 minutes although the Disc would show 1 hour of recording. Take if from me, save your money. This is the most worthless product on the market today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Buy!.......2007-12-03

This DVD player seems to never give up. We have had it in our family for a long time. It is easy to use. Usually SOMETHING goes wrong with stuff like this, but nothing has ever been out of kilter with the player or the remote control. It is extremely simple, not overly complicated like some electronics. A fantastic deal!

1 out of 5 stars Keep looking...unless you want a disposable DVD player........2003-09-06

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who has had problems with this machine. It worked great for months (but much less than a year) then suddenly it would no longer play discs. I took the cover off to see if there was anything I could possibly fix and a piece had totally come loose, the main part responsible for spinning the disc. Needless to say it was beyond my help. It's dumpster material now. Please don't waste your money, too.

1 out of 5 stars Disposable DVD player-.......2002-11-25

This dvd player worked fine for about 7 months starting last January, and then started to exhibit a small amount of occasional skipping, and would freeze up every so often. Player would become frighteningly hot during/after playing a movie. It is now fully non-functional, a movie will skip constantly- there is no point to even try to play one. All of the reviews are true, this machine is an honest LEMON. Amazon.com needs to add a no-star rating, one star was far too generous.

1 out of 5 stars horrible!.......2002-10-02

Skips/Freezes on disks. Just when you get into a movie it will freeze/skip so horribly that you cannont continue watching. We didn't discover this until after the 6 month warranty ran out and Philips' solution was for us to pay ...for them to replace it with the same defective model. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

2 out of 5 stars Great at first, but now...?.......2002-09-20

This machine ran fine for a while then we started having problems with it skipping repeatedly and freezing. You can't get the disk out when it has frozen...you have to wait for it to finish "thinking" and that is so annoying! Some days, it works fine, then a rash of skipping and freezing again. Plus, it tends to overheat..the disks would come out very, very warm. Right now, it plays the disk, but there is no sound, so the kids are having to watch their movies on the computer DVD-rom. I think my husband would agree, this player doesn't hold up at all.

Magnavox MDV453S Progressive-Scan DVD Player

Product Description

This Digital Video Disc Player provides high picture quality, clear sound, and endless playback features available on Digital Video Discs (DVDs). Add options to your DVD viewing - watch a director's cut of a movie, listen to the producer's comments, or play your favorite scene over and over again. The possibilities are limited only by your choices and the materials available on the DVD. You also can listen to Audio Compact Discs and MP3 files on this Player, or view JPEG images.

Amazon.com Product Description

Time to turn your living room into a home theater? Do it affordably with Magnavox's slim and stylin' MDV453S, which boasts high-end progressive-scan component-video outputs--perfect for high-definition and HD-ready TVs of today and tomorrow--and built-in JPEG image and MP3 music decoding so you can enjoy personalized digital-photo slideshows and multihour music mixes right in the comfort of your living room. If you or your loved ones are putting home videos on DVD, the MDV453S will play recordable DVD+R and DVD+RW formats, too.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channels audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions, while Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: 3D Surround simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV). Other helpful features include an advanced, icon-driven GUI (graphical user interface), a screen saver (which helps prevent image burn-in on your TV screen while you've paused or stopped a disc), and auto power-off for energy savings.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, user's manual, and stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

4 out of 5 stars Works well, has had a few "glitches".......2004-03-11

I have owned this about 6 mos. and it has worked great except once the "open" button on the unit stopped working and the buttons on the remote were acting funny, but this resolved after unplugging the unit for about 5 minutes. Reads my DVD+R backup copies of dvds perfectly. Overall very good for the money.

2 out of 5 stars Technically not a DVD player.......2003-12-10

This player did play DVD-R, -RW, and +RW (I didn't have a +R to try), but not well. It kept dropping frames (that is, the video would pause and then skip forward), which is generally a symptom of an MPEG decoder that can't keep up with the bitrate of the DVD. But the DVD was authored at 7.5Mbps max (average 5.5Mbps), and the DVD Forum standards specify that a DVD player must handle 9.8Mbps. This might not matter for most commercial DVDs, which (I've heard) tend to stay below about 5Mbps in order to coddle older players; but there are plenty of titles coming out these days that go for high bitrates to provide maximum quality. If this player can't handle them, then, technically, it is not a DVD player; it should not be advertised as such, and is probably not entitled to use the DVD Forum's DVD Video logo.

Of course, it's possible that the encoder I used to author my DVD was flawed; but it seems unlikely--all three of these discs played correctly in my AMW S99.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD player works great so far ..........2003-11-21

I have had this DVD player for about a month & have had no problems. The only complaint I have is minor and concerns the remote. The first time that I used this player I saw that both the fast forward and play buttons look exactly the same (but, aren't labelled) and the play button is very close to the down arrow button ... so, I found myself having to experiment with the buttons to navigate and hitting the wrong buttons.

1 out of 5 stars Very Dissatisfied!.......2007-01-09

I've had a problem with one of the DVD players. I notified Electronics Expo twice and you once. To date nothing has been done to resolve the problem. I'm very unhappy as it was a Christmas gift, ordered and paid for well in advance. After this experience I will be reluctant to purchase anything of this expense from Amazon again.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this one.......2006-12-06

We bought one of these for Christmas for our children. They were so excited to be able to watch movies in the van. When we first tried it out, there was sound, but no picture. We read through the instruction booklet and it said that it might do that if it had been brought into a warm room from the cold. So, we kept it. WE SHOULD HAVE RETURNED IT IMMEDIATELY. It finally worked with sound and picture, but then the connection started going bad. The DVD player would just stop working in the middle of a movie. It was like we had unplugged it, but we had not. It turned out that the connection at the plug in spot is bad. We even bought a new cord for almost $40 to try to fix it, but it still doesn't work. It also continues to have sound with no picture at various times.
We travel A LOT and it is so frustrating to be driving along with three children who are so happy to be watching a movie and it just goes off. It takes forever to get it to work again if you can EVEN get it to work again. If you get it started and you happen to mash the play button too hard and move the DVD player just a fraction, it will go off again and you have to start all over.
I contacted the company about this several times. Of course they said when I called that it was out of warranty and they would not do anything. When we bought it, it cost $230.00. Basically that is money down the drain. We will have to buy a new DVD player. I have read several reviews on Magnavox products. There have been several indicating that they have sound with no picture, even on large screen TVs. They call customer service and there is no help available.
I spent extra money to get this well known brand as opposed to a cheaper brand. Well, I think I'll choose the less expensive brand next time. At least if it doesn't work, I won't be losing so much money when I have to buy a new one!

4 out of 5 stars It's not so bad........2006-02-19

I received this product for Christmas at least 2 years ago, and it does not have any major problems. It has always been a reliable product. I do not use it as my primary DVD device now b/c I got a laptop w/ a DVD writer (

1 out of 5 stars Died after 3 months, company WILL NOT REPAIR OR REPLACE.......2005-05-22

I am very upset at Magnavox right now. I received this player on Christmas Day, and it died in mid-March after less than 20 hours of use (the disc spins but never loads, while the drive makes terrible grinding noises). I tried 10 different discs before declaring the device dead. I called Magnavox to ask about repairs and was extremely INSULTED by their reponses and policies. Get this.

This unit, a portable player with many moving parts, which is expected to get banged around through transport and reasonable use (it's a portable unit), has only a 90 DAY WARRANTY. 90 days. Not a year. Not even 6 months. Only 90 days. Guess what happens after 90 days? THEY WILL NOT REPAIR THE UNIT AT ALL. Your ONLY available option is to exchange the unit, through them, for a 'Discounted Exchange Price'. HA! Would you be surprised to know that their 'Discounted' price is MORE THAN I PAID FOR THE NEW ONE IN DECEMBER? What a lousy excuse for service! They will not budge on this, and they do not offer any kind of repairs.

My call to Customer Service was quite disappointing as well. I was transferred from person to person, spent nearly an hour on hold (over and over), and went through four people. At first, I was told by the phone representative in Manila (overseas, of course!) that the unit would be replaced for free. That's what I was expecting to hear, and I was pleased. They asked me to fax my proof of purchase, which I did. When I called back, I ended up speaking to three different people, each of whom had a different story. In the end, I was told that my 'ticket number was changed', that they DO NOT REPAIR these units at all (they always just replace the defective ones, IF they are still under warranty - the paltry 90 day warranty, that is), and there's nothing I can do but buy another one - either from them (more expensive than Amazon!!!) or from someone else. There is no likelihood whatsoever that I will buy another player from Magnavox, portable or otherwise.

My advice is to STAY AWAY from this piece of junk. You will only be disappointed. If it malfunctions after 90 days, you will be left with a worthless and unusable player. Magnavox was entirely unhelpful, and their return policy is absurd. You will regret buying this player if even the slightest problem arises. Stick with a brand that you can trust - one that has a reasonable warranty and that treats its customers with *respect*.

I will never, for the rest of my life, buy another Magnavox product of any kind. Of this, I am completely certain. You should take my advice.

What a disaster.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk - Horrible Customer Service.......2005-04-22

I just read several other negative reviews for this product and agree that the unit is junk. Mine only lasted 6 months before I got the infamous continuous 'loading' message. I called Magnavox customer service about the 'One year reduced cost exchange' warranty and the reduced cost to exchange the unit was more than I originally paid for the product. I was then instructed to direct my complaint to Philips. I contacted Philips via email and received the following response (note that it came from Magnavox even though I contacted Philips):

Dear Magnavox Customer,

Thank you for your email to Magnavox Customer Care.
We have received your comments about the $250.00 price for the reduce cost exchange for a Magnavox MPD720. We appreciate your time in letting us know that you find this information "unfair" because you only brought the unit for $228.00 less than a year ago. This will be taken in consideration in order for us to serve you better.

For Customer Service, please call 1-800-661-6162.

Guess what...the phone number is invalid and as you can see the email is automated and cannot be responded to. TERRIBLE customer service from both Magnavox and Philips....do not buy their products!!!
