Sitting here trying to replace this piece of garbage, which was cheap--but started playing DVDs on odd tracks that we hadn't selected--I wonder why I paid as little as I paid. Don't waste your money on this. As cheap as it is, it isn't worth that.
Stopped working after 4 months!.......2007-06-05
Do not get this DVD Player. It's been only 4 months and this player is now completely dead. I've used it a dozen times over the past few months. Also, it has the worst remote I've seen on any electronic device ever.
It's junk. Spend extra cash and get a real dvd player.
Don't bother buying!.......2007-05-25
It freezes up in the middle of the movie, and the remote doesn't work even though I changed the batteries. It's very frustrating, and I have contacted Coby support even though I've found that DVD-514 has been discontinued. I'm not sure they will reply on a discontinued product.
Worst remote control ever........2007-05-16
This is lightweight, which is good. It plays most (not all) of the CD/DVD types that it claims to, and does a pretty good job with them, with occasional skipping issues...
But the remote control is the WORST. You have to press the keys incredibly hard to get them to work at all, and if you're not within three feet of the device you have to press the keys more than once.
I would avoid this, unless you already have a programmable remote control. If so, throw away the remote that comes with it and use your own. You'll spare yourself strained fingers and muttered curses.

Good DVD for the price.......2007-10-28
I think this dvd player is a great buy...the disk tray opens fast with one touch of the remote...it seems that the movies i rent are for wide screen, but one touch on the zoom button on the remote, and it fills up my tv screen...it has an optical output for great sound...and it is very compatable with my home theatre...before i had a $300 yamaha..which i trashed because the door would not open... so for under $50 and as of now, free shipping, i think you can't go wrong...When this one quits, I will just trash it.... it actually has more features than my $300 unit...Sound and picture is very good. If you need a good dvd player I say BUY it...

I bought this DVD player mainly for the karaoke feature. I was pretty disappointed. The mic had way too much echo and there is no way to reduce it. As for movie playback, the image occasionally flickers. I doesn't happen often enough to make me stop watching a movie but it is rather annoying.

Poor Playback Reliability.......2005-02-07
We purchased the Coby DVD-227 because of its price: $19.95 after rebate. However, it pauses the DVD intermittently during play. It will pause any where from 10-30 seconds. It then continues on. During Spderman 2, it paused 2 times. During 13 Going on 30, it paused 3 times. Very annoying. And, to make matters worse, the store we bought it at has an exchange only policy.

Memorex means "customer unfriendly" junk!.......2007-05-20
I sadly purchased this dvd player from the local Target with high hopes and a thin wallet. The player lasted three months (guarantee limit) plus four days. On the disasterous fourth day I inserted a previously playable disc into the unit, pushed the disc tray "close" button - the tray closed and then opened, closed and then opened, closed and then opened and on and on. I then resorted to the manual microprocessor "reset" procedure i.e. turn off unit, unplug for at least one minute, then reinsert power plug and "bingo" the unit SHOULD work properly. Unfortunately, that was not the case. It continued to auto cycle - tray in, tray out etc. I returned the dvd player to Target - they were no help (expired guarantee), but gave me Memorex telephone number. I called Memorex in Florida - their customer no-service informed me it would be $98 to repair plus shipping and handling for a $45 machine. No thanks - I will just buy "cheapos" in the future and exchange them up to end of 90 day guarantee(?)period WHEN they fail. The dvd player will NOT be Memorex and the dealer will not be Target!!!

I received this for Christmas in 2004, and it worked well for two years until it died in December 2006. The warranty is 90 days, so I asked Customer Support of they just expect this sort of thing? They offered to repair it for $24.75, but I could buy a new one for about the same price. Still trying to decide what to do.

Very disappointed. Memorex claims that this DVD player will play DVDs, VCDs, Kodak Picture CDs, and music CDs, but all it will play for me are pre-recorded DVDs. It does that very well, and has lots of remote control features for the price, but it won't play my pre-recorded CDs; it won't play any VCD I've ever tried; and it won't play any home-burned DVDs or Picture CDs made on either a Dell or an HP computer.
I returned the first one I bought (thinking it was just a bad machine), but the replacement behaves in just the same way.
There are much better machines out there if you need a DVD player to handle lots of different things.

Well,I've just bought it from Target for my room's TV,because the price is so low.:)I highly doubted if it could work at first, you know, it's too cheap:). After I put my "pal" format and region zero DVD into it, it worked fine! And beyond my expectation, there are hacks that can transform it into region zero DVD player! I think it's great for a 29 bucks DVD player.
