Goodbye VHS; it works!.......2007-12-21
This device did a great job of capturing my VHS tapes. The required cables are included (VHS player to converter, converter to PC USB). It took about 20 minutes to install the software, so I was capturing my movies within 30 minutes. The capture is so simple you wont need the directions. Once I had captured my tapes to the PC the prcoess slowed down considerably. The Showbiz DVD editor included in the package does an adequate job, but poor instructions, so you'll have to learn by trial and error (their website is NO help). It took me all day to edit and create my first movie with titles and thumbnails. Once I completed my changes, it took about an hour to "create" the movie with the Showbiz software (I strongly suggest writing the movie to your hard drive before writing to DVD). I could now view my finished movie on my PC, but the DVD I created would not play in my DVD player. I eventually used Nero to burn the DVDs, copying the entire project folder (including Arcsoft and Video_TS folders) to the blank DVD. Now, on day three, I can capture and create a VHS tape to DVD in about 4 hours total.
Pros:
- nice quality on VHS capture (my tapes were from the 80's)
- everything is included (converter, cables, editing software)
- cost was approx. what I was going to pay a professional to convert 2 tapes
Cons:
- editing software is not user friendly, poor instructions, help window is a joke
- no help on error messages, I eventually learned to not use commas in project names
- I could not burn my DVD with included software, had to use Nero (probably can be done, I didn't figure out how)
Great tool for doing the job yourself, but don't underestimate the time it will require to convert your tapes.
Major Disappointment and Aggravation .......2007-12-20
I purchased the DVDXpressDX2 in mid October. It copied the video to my computer without a problem. However, when I tried to copy the video from my computer to a DVD it crashed after a few attempts. I had to uninstall the software then reinstall the software to get it to run again, but it crashed again when trying to burn a DVD. I contacted ADSTech service and was told to download a newer version of their software. I did and it burned the DVD but then would not work with the hardware unit to transfer the video to the computer. I reinstalled the old software and the hardware unit worked again but once more the system crashed when trying to burn a DVD. I spent nearly two months with ADSTech service all to no avail. They kept insisting that the software worked and finally after a month suggested that their hardware MAY be a problem. This was of course absurd since the hardware worked just fine with one version of software but not at all with the other. Thus it had to be the software. They refused to ship a known functioning hardware and software combination.
My recommendation is to stay away from this product. It has caused no end of aggravation. The ADSTech service department is unable to diagnose a problem so expect no help from them if you happen to have purchased this item. If you have any problem return it immediately to the seller.
Worked fine for me.......2007-12-18
Easy to use, and makes great quality video reproductions. Cost a little more than some cheaper ones, but well worth the small additional cost, because you get everything you need, including software.
As Advertised.......2007-12-08
Tried this out on some short clips. Downloaded from a Sony Hi-8 analog camera onto my hard drive and was able to then transfer this into Adobe Premiere Elements without any problem. When I burned it out, it was a little soft, but no sync problems or anything like that. Like I say, "As Advertised."
Didn't work for me........2007-11-25
I purchased the ADS Tech DVD Xpress DX2 Video Converter for my Sony Windows XP PC. When I tried to load the driver, Windows XP gave me a warning that the driver was not certified for Windows XP. I took the risk and continued anyway. The next thing I knew my DVD-RW and audio stopped working. I was able to get the DVD working again, but the sound is still not working. I obviously can't recommend this converter based on my experience.

Convenient (USB means one less cord!) way to convert analog content to digital.......2007-11-30
The software is easy to use and relatively versatile. You can personalize DVD menus and labels, for example.
AWESOME!!!.......2007-11-11
This thing is just fantastic. First I bought what appeared to be a usb cable adapter type apparatus from an auction site. It had an s-video as well as rca connectors.......please don't waste your money on that item. This is the real deal so pop for the little extra and be happy. I installed it on an XP pro machine. It installed so easily I couldn't believe it. The product itself was very easy to use. I was using it to capture some vhs tapes I borrowed from school of my daughter sports to make a dvd for a coach. It allowed me to capture only the parts I wanted. A note here though, if you want sound this does a good job but if not simply unplug the audio cable and just capture the video. Not sure if it mattered but I used nero 8 to capture and edit........worked like a dream.
Wow - Almost Installs Itself! Call Me "Impressed".......2007-08-30
A couple years ago I bought a Vaio Media Center PC, in large part to have a simple way of transforming those boxes of VHS bricks into nice small DVDs or (even smaller) video files. Whoa, major error!
For two years I had hassled around with Sony's impossible and irretrievably-buggy video capture software to no avail ("DVD Gate" and "Click to DVD" now play starring roles in my nightmares, right alongside Sheryl Crow and Albert Gore staring menacingly at my toilet paper...) So I'm scouring the "Multimedia" section of Forums dot Techguy dot Org and one of the senior members is recommending an external USB video capture box by ADS. After learning that most, if not all, of the competition have major problems syncing audio and video - Dazzle and Pinnacle spring immediately to mind on that issue - compared with generally rave reviews of ADS's product, I sprung for the DVD Xpress.
Bottom line: I had the thing plugged in, the software installed and my crusty old video footage happily - finally - making the journey to digital immortality, within the space of fifteen minutes flat. It was one of those "Pinch yourself, could it really be this easy?" moments, and the answer is "Yes."
No audio-video sync problems so far, the image quality is lossless, and the CapWiz capture software has impressive configuration flexibility for output formats, bit rates, audio and video resolution, as well as all the usual brightness/contrast/color adjustment controls.
The bundled Ulead Video Studio 9 SE was significantly less impressive. I haven't messed with it in depth, but my attempt to add a simple text title to the beginning of a digitized video of a jam session with the boys was frustrating as hell so I just blew it off. What I've read in other reviews leads me to believe that getting some other second-party editing software is a wiser option - I hear lots of recommendations for Nero but...that name is just a tad creepy, ain't it? (I can just picture the marketing brainstorm session: "'Hitler?' Nahh. How about 'Stalin... 'Che?' Errmm...'Nero' Yeah! Highfive!") But I digress... PC Mag says Roxio VideoWave 8 is a good bet for secondary processing and editing, also top reviews have been nabbed by Cyberlink's PowerDirector 6, ArcSoft's ShowBiz DVD 2.1, and Corel's Video Studio 11.
If you're someone who's long dreamed of burning all of those Cro-Magnon VHS tapes onto your PC's hard drive or DVDs but have struggled with the needlessly incomprehensible mechanisms that came with your computer, trust me: The 80 or so clams you'll spend on the ADS DVD Xpress would be a bargain at twice the price. Why computer manufacturers are apparently incapable of integrating something this simple and user-friendly into the actual PC (! - duh,) will likely remain one of those Great Mysteries to keep techies and future archaeologists scratching their heads for centuries, but no matter. Just get this thing, you'll be glad you did.
Great Versatile check what you can do!.......2007-08-17
This is what I do with this:
1a. save VHS or DVD to hard drive
then
1b. copy from hard drive to my video ipod
Also...
2. tape Playstation 2 game videos directly to my hard drive, using my computer monitor. No need to put them on a VHS or DVD, then to computer. I am in a PS2 game league, so I had to be able to tape PS2 game races, to hard drive. So I could upload them to the internet.

This is the answer.......2007-06-27
This is a great little bundle for the price. Includes the capturing unit and all the software you could need. Video capture program was very easy to use. Worked perfectly on the first attempt, and I actually read very little of the included instructions. The instructions, if you need them, are pretty clear cut. Second program included allows you to add your own scene selection menu, your own text, music, background on the menus, and a mirage of visual additions. Again, I was successful in using this on the first try. There is also an option to capture direct to disk if you have limited disk space. With that option your captured video is going to get directly burned to disk without you being able to add in any extras with the secondary program. Pick your poision, but either one will be enjoyable. :)
Grab this package if you are having issues with converting old VHS to DVD thru combo dubbing devices (great for those old selections that were never re-released on DVD) AND for those home videos you want to convert over. These devices are not easy to come by, as they are not readily available. I have also heard of people having issues with other various converters out on the market. THIS ONE WORKS!
Be aware, you do need to be sure that your PC is equipt with a DVD burner. Your drive MUST be a DVD burner, NOT JUST A CD BURNER. Some people forget that part. Without a DVD burner the disk will not be properly created for DVD player use. Just thought I'd point it out. Also, the DVD player you use to play the disk also needs to read DVD-R disks also. Most newer ones do, but if you have a DVD player that is a number of years old, you may want to check its capability.
