I would buy this again.......2007-12-25
I have had great success backing up much of my old vhs to dvds and the audio/visual quality is far superior to a previous litespeed vhs to dvd recorder I owned. For a few stubborn macromedia protected ones (no vhs/dvd recorder will work) I hooked up a separate vhs to a sima godvd I bought off ebay to the front connection on the burner which worked well and the quality is decent on those as well. The controls are a little slow but I'm happy with the product overall.
DVD does not work.......2007-12-24
I cannot really give a fair rating as to convenience, performance, etc., because the DVD portion of device did not work when we hooked it up two days ago. I have had people who are very good with these devices check to see that I had it connected properly, so that is not the problem. I will be returning the product in the next few days.
Useless, doesn't record.......2007-12-09
After setting up a timer recording, the recording didn't start. There was a "failed" message in the recording set up. The manual said that was because there was either no disc or no space on the disc. After trying several properly formatted discs and getting the same "failed" message, I finally pushed the Record button on the front to see if the unit would record without the timer. A message popped up saying the content was protected and couldn't be recorded. It was an ordinary prime-time network show tuned through an antenna - don't have cable. I got the same results with several other shows... and commercials! I purchased a DVD recorder primarily to record shows to watch later, and this unit doesn't allow that.
slow and grey image.......2007-12-06
i purchased this item to replace both old vcr and dvd player but i was soon to be disappointed . The cable image with the old jvc vcr was clearer ,blacker . The image with this Toshiba is grey and at first i thought it was my connections or cables so i replaced them without any improvement .Another thing i hated is when i would change channel it is very very slow also it wouldn't play my recorded DVD's from my Canon camcorder .Just too many issues and i am now returning it and getting a panasonic

I do like this item. I used to love it. Then I tried to program timer recordings of certain shows I wouldn't be home to watch. I would set everything up perfectly but the shows wouldn't record. All I'd get was a big error message on the screen saying that the content I was trying to record was protected & couldn't be recoreded. Apparently many shows are being broadcast with copy-protection and this machine will not allow the casual viewer to simply make a disc to be viewed later at one's convenience. I'm not a video pirate and I deeply resent being treated as one. Once I've recorded a show I'll watch it. Then I'll either erase the disc or add it to my collection. I don't make extra copies to sell on streetcorners or on eBay but I guess the networks and Toshiba think the best way to thwart the bootleggers is by screwing the innocent along with the guilty.

Attractive features, poor execution.......2007-09-15
OK, I admit it. I was an early adopter, so I suppose I have only myself to blame for all of the returns. (BTW, Toshiba will issue a UPS label for the return if you insist.) That said, the recorder is now working pretty well, and, for the price, its a good deal. However there are a couple of things that are not well designed in the software. First, it will not record over-the-air High Definition broadcasts to DVD, as they come (in my area) with a "No Copy" tag. Argue if you will about about time-shifting and resolution reduction, but that's the way it is. Second, "timer recording" (a) won't let you overlap (8-9, 9-10) and (b) starts the recording one minute early. Which strikes me as too arrogant for words, and is perhaps a clue as to why there were so many problems with the original unit.

Buy only if you want to waste your money........2007-06-12
The SD-502 seems to be a great product if it worked. I purchased itin October 2006 for about $145.00 and installed it on a Dell X3. The install was flawless and it latched onto satellites very quickly. I loved it. It was sooo easy. Then came the real test. I took it with me on a road trip from VA to FL (approx 16 hours). 6 hours into the trip the device failed. Although the GPS side of the product seemed to work (blinking light and all) the mapping software kept saying the map files (which I stored on the on board 512 MB memory) was corrupt. If I turned off the device and let it cool it would start working again for 5 minutes and die again. The unit was worthless for the trip and I had to revert to MapQuest..:( I came back and sent it back to Global Sat USA. They send me a wrong unit as a replacement (SD-501 with no on board memory). I called them and they promptly sent me a SD-502. I put it into my PDA and I got no light it was dead. I sent the second one back and explained the problem. The replacement they sent me turned out to be the same bad unit I had just sent them. The bottom line, the techs very very courteous to talk to and it seemed that they were supporting a really bad product. The product is really not built for long use. After spending money shipping back and forth three times and not seeing any hope for this product. I decided to cut my loses. I have thrown this unit out with 5 months of warranty still left and went out and purchased a Garmin Nuvi 350 (I should have done it in the first place). Anyway after wasting $250.00 on this flimsy product I decided to warn any user that wants an honest review to save their money. I never write reviews, but I do not want any one else to lose money on this product. I hope you don't waste your money like I did on this terrible product.

I have had this for about 2 weeks, and it is just awesome! I have an axim x30, and it performs flawlessly. We have used it for geocaching and normal navigation.

You will need to visit the usglobasat web site to see if your device will work. Palm devices are not supported.
I've tested this SDIO GPS receiver on a Dell AXIM 30 with PocketPC 2003 second edition OS, Dell AXIM 30 with PocketPC 2003 first edition OS, and an iPaq hx2790b with Windows Mobile 5 OS. Tested these devices with Pocket Streets and Trips 2006 and they worked perfectly. I keep the MAPS on the 512MB SDIO card of the GPS receiver.
I prefer using the iPaq hx2790b since it also has a CF card. This lets me use Oziexplorer with its maps loaded on a 1GB CF card.

I concur with the previous reviewer. This GPS is a piece of junk. I received it as a gift for my birthday, and it never worked right. Only about once in 50 tries does the Palm recognize the GPS, and even then, it "disappears" after about 5 minutes. I even did a hard reset on my Palm Treo 700w and installed only the Street Atlas Handheld software and the GPS driver and that didn't work.
Bottom line is this: If you're trying to get this device to work with your Treo 700w, forget it and look for a GPS that's (a) better built, (b) has better drivers, and (c) actually has a tech support dept that cares.
Amazon really *does* need a 0 rating --- especially for this product.

Where's the zero star...? I bought this to use with my new Palm Treo 700w with CoPilot Live 6 software. After uninstalling, and playing with the thing for way to long I have come to the conclusion that the thing just doesn't work. The SD card is very slow at accessing the information placed on it. Can't even run the GPS software from it! I can't even get a signal...The website doesn't have any troubleshooting and the CD it came with has no info what so ever! Guess I'm going bluetooth for a GPS reciever, save yourself lots of time and aggrevation and DO NOT get this product!
