Amazon.com Product Description

The Harman Kardon DVD31 is a versatile DVD audio/video player designed to meet the high performance standards of both audiophiles and videophiles. On the sound side, it provides complete audio control and bass management for DVD-Audio playback using analog outputs. On the video side, it performs progressive scanning, also referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, which creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DVD31 also offers 3:2 pulldown, which reassembles the frame sequence of your original film-based content from DVDs to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

The DVD31's comprehensive array of audio adjustments allows you to adjust the time delay, output level, and speaker size selection for excellent audio reproduction from all speakers in a multichannel home entertainment system. For quality, the DVD31 uses a Wolfson 192kHz/24-bit audio D/A converter, along with premium internal components in the audio signal path.

The DVD31 provides excellent video playback when used with a high-definition display, thanks to its leading-edge digital video technology that uses pixel-by-pixel processing, rather than the line-by-line technique employed by conventional DVD players. This is accomplished by using a digital signal processor for superior picture quality and smoother, more realistic images with more detail.

In addition to playing DVD-Audio and DVD-Video, the DVD31 plays Windows Media Audio (WMA), VCD, CD, CD-R/RW, WMA, MP3, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM multisession, and 96 kHz/24-bit audio discs, and it's also compatible with JPEG still-image files stored on compact discs. The player can also simultaneously play MP3 tracks and JPEG images and coordinate the two, automatically changing images with each MP3 track played in slideshow presentations. The unit's program, random, and repeat play modes operate with the files and folders on MP3 and WMA discs, as well as with DVDs and CDs.

The DVD31's key picture-search and convenience functions include frame-by-frame advance, smooth fast-scanning at x2, x4, x16, and x100 speeds, fine slow motion at x1/2, x1/4, x1/16, and x1/100 speeds, three picture-zoom settings with panning capability, parental lock, and many additional features.

The player includes progressive-scan and standard-scan component video outputs, which can output simultaneously with the S-video and composite video jacks. It also provides both coaxial and optical digital output, multichannel analog output, and stereo analog audio outputs. It comes with a full-featured, backlit, ergonomically designed remote control.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Investment.......2007-09-22

Pathetic excuse for a DVD player. Cannot read many DVD discs. Very picky when burning your own dvd. Remote control is pathetic. You must be directly in front of player in order to even have a possibility of the player receiving the signal from the remote. I would sell mine, however my conscience will not allow me to!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Audio syncing problems.......2007-02-07

I was disappointed to find two major flaws in this DVD player -- the first, its failure to provide a digital DVD-Audio signal, is unfortunate but not unforgivable. The analog outs, which require pausing the music and switching to a different input on the remote whenever you want to listen to anything, sound fine.

The bigger problem is the unit's inability to maintain proper syncing of audio with video. When you spend this much on a quality H/K player, you expect WAY more. It's a simple, essential function. But I'd say about 33% of the time, I pause the player at any point in the disc, resume play, and the audio either lags or jumps ahead of the video. I'm forced to pause and unpause until the sound syncs.

Due to these problems, I'm not even going to go into picture and sound quality...I can't get past the two issues mentioned above.

4 out of 5 stars Good Dvd player but dont listen to Electronics Fan "Paul".......2006-01-31

The reviewer below me ( Electronics Fan "paul" ) does not know anything about electronics. -- "Let me begin by saying, while this player does NOT offer HD upconversion, it outperforms the Sony and Samsung upconverting HD players. I carefully compared the three models on my Hitachi 51 RPTV, and found this to clearly be the best."
- First off, he's making the comparison with his hitachi rear projection tv. Of course upconverting dvd players (sony and samsung) won't look good on this tv. You will only notice the vast difference with plasma or lcd displays. If you have a rptv don't bother with upconverting players.!
2nd, again going back to his rptv. --"I saw absolutely NO benefit from using a high-quality DVI connector as opposed to high-quality component cables." - Unless you have hd resolution, component and dvi, even hdmi, will deliver a very similar result with any of these cables.
Anyway, now onto this player. My cousin has the older model and I must say the picture quality is pretty good with his plasma tv. So im assuming this newer model has new features that should make it an even better player.
If you dont have a high resolution tv this is an excellent player but a bit pricecy. But if you do have a high res tv, you may want to look at the upconverting players. They are also a lot cheaper

5 out of 5 stars DVD Player Review.......2006-01-31

The DVD player has done a great job. We have had no problems with it at all.

1 out of 5 stars Very flawed.......2006-01-23

I'm very disapointed with this Kardon product being an avid fan of the past products from the respective company, but this one is off the chart. Playing a DVD movie using either the digital coaxial output or the optical output, the audio plays on and off out of sync. I've pushed the dealying time up and down both on the player and the AVR and it makes no diffrence. That tells me that there is something wrong with decoding device in the player. The DVD31 looks good and offers some great picture rendition. Also the audio rendition is exceptional but I simply can't live up to the fact that it cannot play dvd movies in sync with the audio (or the other way around). Try to avoid this product and lets hope that Harman Kardon will produce a better player in the future.

Harman Kardon DVD 22 Progressive-Scan DVD Player

Product Description

Picture quality is not just a question of resolution, but how the image is decoded. The DVD 22 uses pixel-by-pixel - rather than line-based - processing to produce a noticeably sharper image. Compatible with DVD, MP3, Windows Media and JPEG discs, the DVD 22 features high-end DACs, a built-in test signal and backlit remote for outstanding video and audio performance.

Amazon.com Product Description

Harman Kardon's high-performance DVD 22 makes it easier than ever to enjoy your favorite movies, music, and digital photos from the comfort of your living room. In addition to compatibility with DVD-Video, the DVD 22 can play MP3 and WMA CDs, DVD-R/-RWs, DVD+R/-RWs, and multisession CD-ROMs, as well as recordable CDs filled with JPEG image files. Its enhanced versatility extends to the its program play, random play, and repeat play modes, which function with all discs, including MP3/WMA CDs. Additionally, the DVD 22 includes a host of picture-search and convenience functions.

The DVD 22's Harman-exclusive navigational interface provides ready access to favorite DVD titles and chapters, CD tracks, and WMA and MP3 files and folders via an intuitive onscreen menu. The player can also simultaneously play MP3 tracks and JPEG images, automatically changing images with each MP3 track played in slideshow presentations.

The DVD 22 achieves a remarkable new level of progressive-scan video playback quality when used with a high-definition or HD-ready television or display, thanks to digital pixel-by-pixel processing. This processing upconverts images to progressive-scan one pixel at a time, rather than one line at a time, as conventional DVD players do. The pixel-by-pixel reconstruction is accomplished by an integrated digital signal processor that provides smoother, more realistic images with exceptional detail and contrast relative to standard progressive-scan performance.

The DVD 22 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Three picture-zoom settings with panning capability and parental locks round out the video features.

Audiophile-grade 24-bit/192 kHz audio digital-to-analog converters ensure the highest possible fidelity and resolution, and the player uses premium-quality internal components in the audio signal path.

The player includes both progressive-scan and interlaced component-video outputs, available simultaneously with S-video and composite-video playback. Audio outputs include coaxial and optical digital and stereo analog, plus a headphone jack with a dedicated level control for private listening. The player comes with a backlit, ergonomically designed remote control.

Ultraslim, with a gloss-black upper panel, silver lower panel, blue dot-matrix display, and a minimum of visible controls, the DVD 22 cuts a striking picture. Its low height lets you place it virtually anywhere, including on the thin glass shelves used in many contemporary equipment racks and TV stands, or atop a receiver, where cabinet space may be limited. The player's styling matches Harman Kardon's receivers, speakers, and other AV components.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent player.......2007-04-08

I bought this as part of teh Harman Kardon CP-15 home Theater System. I'm trully delighted. After owning a Sony system, which was pretty good on its own, I could notice the difference. Movies just look sharper and better, and the slow motion is really good. For the price this player it's an excelent buy if you are looking for a high end DVD player

1 out of 5 stars Great player, but does not work anymore.......2007-03-31

The player used to be really great, especially as CD player with analogue connection to Harman Kardon amplituner. Unfortunately, I have the very same problem with it as the other reviewers. It simply stopped working after about two years. I can power it on or off, but that's it. I cannot play any DVD or CD - buttons just don't work. It seems that the player software has crashed.

1 out of 5 stars Stopped working after about 2 years of limited use.......2007-03-11

Wow, I just ran into the same problem a lot of people here have written about. None of the buttons work. I can't even eject the DVD to send it back to Netflix. I will have to break the door open.

Of course my warranty has expired. I sent an email to their support rep, and they told me to drive 90 miles to Sacramento for the nearest repair center. Yeah, right.

I will not be purchasing products from Harman in the future.

2 out of 5 stars Like it, but similar reliability problems.......2007-03-07

This DVD player was part of our custom home theater, built in Jan 2004. The unit worked well for about 9 months then stopped spinning up. I've replaced it with another DVD player, but would like to use this one, since it has a custom faceplate and compliments my AV rack. Given the other problems mentioned in these reviews I'm likely to not get it fixed.

2 out of 5 stars Stay Away from DVD 22.......2007-02-20

I had the exact same problem as Goldberg. It would power on but none of the functions would work and I would have to unplug it 4 or 5 times before it worked. Recently just shy of two years it completely crapped out. I had to break it apart to get my netflix disc out of it. I really liked the unit, it had great picture and audio quality, just didn't last that long. I have a HK receiver and it is fine. To replace my dvd 22, I got a Denon, but I have been looking at the new HKs. I think I like them better just a little apprehensive after my last dvd experience with them..

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good DVD Player. HDMI 1.0 limited........2007-10-17

On sale, this HK DVD37 merits consideration. The vido quality is clear and crisp. The color transfer however is average as the HDMI 1.0 does not measure up to the more recent version 1.3. Also, for surround sound, an optical or other audio out must be used as the 1.0 only supports PCM output. Please note as well, that some DVD+R brands seem incompatible with this unit. TDK for example. The user interface, remote and menu's are easy to understand or navigate. The DVD37 seems soild and well built. With a better than average picture, yet not the best by any means, this HK unit would make sense only if the price is right.

2 out of 5 stars Good seller, crappy product.......2007-09-13

This DVD player just turned me off of Harmon/Kardon products forever. It's packed full of features but is a total waste. It hardly plays any burned DVDs that play fine in players from 5 years ago regardless of -R or +R. Even with some pressed DVDs the menu functions do not work properly and are thus impossible to navigate or even watch the movie. It will occasionally freeze when viewing standard pressed DVDs as well as listening to CDs. Also don't really notice a difference in picture quality in the "up conversion" via the HDMI output. Don't waste your time or money on this product, you'll be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HK DVD 25 has best quality.......2003-08-24

I have used several DVD players but this is by far the best quality of any. Don't believe it when someone says that all DVD players have the same quality picture, it just isn't true.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2003-05-23

Let me first say that all DVD players are not created equal. I once thought so until I bought a top-of-the-line 57" HDTV rear projection television.

I tried an older JVC DVD player and a newer Sony Progressive Scan DVD player, and both players performed poorly...neither had video processors srong enough to carry a sharp image across a large screen area.

I decided to go with the Harmon Kardon DVD-25; the picture was and continues to be extremely satisfying, and it is a nice looking unit. As has been mentioned by other reviewers, the HK DVD-25 plays a variety of formats.

I would be lying to you if I told you it was the best; there are other DVD players out there that go for even more Benjamins than DVD-25 and likely perform better (such as Denon models and some Onkyo models), but if you're on a budget and you need a high-end DVD player that can muscle a sharp image onto a large HDTV, then Harmon Kardon is the way to go.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of plastic?.......2003-02-23

This machine is solid, performs well, and very easy to use. I highly recommend if you're sick of spending hundreds of dollars on equipment that seems as if it was made in a toy factory.

5 out of 5 stars Great Player! You wont be sorry that you purchased it!.......2003-01-11

Recently my Pioneer DVD player died after several years of use. One of the main reasons I liked that player was it seemed to play everything I asked DVD, CD, VCD, SVCD.

When looking for a new player I wanted to get a Progressive Scan to use with my HD Panasonic Big Screen. I bought a Samsung DVD player but it did a very poor job playing my VCDs created using ULead DVD picture show. The picture was good ,but the audio was too fast.

I read some reviews of the HK and decided to jump at it since most reviews said it would play anything you throw at it. The truth is that it does! MP3, CD-RW, CD-R, VCD, SCVD and of course your DVDs.

First thing you will notice about the player is the weight. It feels like the solid product that it is. If you want to use the Progressive Scan you will need to change the settings. That is made easy through an On-Screen guide. The DA converters even have settings so you can make sure they match best through your AV receiver. It has a Test feature where you can make sure all your settings are correct for the best picture possible. This gives you a quick way to fine-tune your TV's brightness, contrast, and color settings

The picture is clear and the player makes almost no noise. It does a great job with CD music too. I don't use my Sony changer as much anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD player - well built.......2003-01-06

Great unit. Great quality. Good price.

I only wish it did stills (JPEGs). Error correction good on disks with bad/corrupted missing blocks. I have a DVD I tried to rip on my PC. Software caught the bad block on defective disk and halted, yet the Harman Kardon DVD doesn't skip a single frame when it same disk at the same spot.

The weight of this unit is almost twice that of a comparable JVC XV-s502/s500 I purchased as a gift. Really sturdy! Great price for a component quality DVD. All the mass- market units range about $129-$179 at discount or instead the higher end component DVD's all start around $500/$600/$700+ and many don't play MP3's, CD-RW's and other formats. This is a good mid-point price, component, value choice. Great features, great audio/video, Test picture to adjust TV quality, Mutli-function remote, Harman Kardon quality are all plusses!

Paid about $269 at local discout electronics store. Nice appearance - mix of black w/ silver trim, looks expensive.

Amazon.com Product Description

Designed to handle every popular digital audio and video format, Harman Kardon's DVD50 with progressive scan is an advanced and versatile five-disc DVD video changer. The DVD50 is the first DVD changer to include built-in MP3 decoding from CD discs. The DVD50 can also play CD-Rs and CD-RWs as well as DVDs, standard audio CDs, and Video CD discs. With its built-in HDCD processing, the DVD50 delivers the ultimate in quality compact disc playback. Features such as progressive-scan component-video outputs and 10-bit video digital-to-audio conversion, with 27 MHz filtering, provide unsurpassed video performance.

In addition to progressive-scan output, the DVD50 includes standard-scan-rate component-video (Y/Pr/Pb), S-video, and composite-video outputs. A Wolfson 24-bit/192 kHz audio digital-to-analog converter offers extraordinary resolution, sonic accuracy, and compatible playback of high-resolution 96/24 audio discs. The DVD50 is compatible with both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel discs and also includes a built-in HDCD decoder that allows listeners to enjoy the full sonic benefits of the improved resolution, dynamic range, and musical realism provided by the HDCD format. Thanks to its precision digital filter, the HDCD decoder also improves the sound quality of conventional non-HDCD-encoded CDs. The DVD50 includes coaxial and optical digital outputs, plus standard down-mixed analog audio outputs, and a down-mixed stereo headphone output for private listening.

The DVD50 takes user convenience to a new level. Its comprehensive, easy-to-use onscreen menu system and full-function backlit remote control make initial setup and operation simple and intuitive. The player offers a wide variety of viewing options, such as multiple-aspect-ratio selection, multiple viewing angles, a choice of multiple-language soundtracks and subtitles, and still and motion digital zoom.

The DVD50 also provides a number of picture search and scanning options, such as four-speed Smooth Scan (2x, 4x, 8x, 100x), four-speed Super Fine Slow Motion (1/2x, 1/4x, 1/8x, and 1/16x), and frame-by-frame advance, along with a choice of program-play and repeat-play options. Additional convenience functions include MP3 Text and CD Text display, and a play-one/exchange-four disc-playback function that allows users to exchange up to four DVD discs in the changer while watching a fifth disc without interruption.

Harman Kardon provides a one-year warranty on parts and labor on the DVD50.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Recommendation.......2007-06-14

After purchasing a smattering of HK product (receivers, DVD's players, etc), between 1999 and 2001, I have grown utterly disappointed in their diminishing quality. I originally purchased the DVD5 - but it was at an authorization repair facility 2 weeks later, and didn't return for 7 months - covered under warranty... but what a hassle!

In the interim, I bought the DVD-50... owned it for a year, ordered the firmware upgrade and followed the instructions religiously. The upgrade, however, became corrupt, and disabled my $500 DVD50. In calling tech support, they informed me there's no way to reverse the upgrade without swapping the IC for a $90 fee, plus S&H - - talk about insult to injury! It is now a paperweight in my garage.

Having purchased 8 different HK receivers/DVD players for my home... 4 of the DVD players had faulty power supply/relay issues and two of the receivers had the same thing. Worst of all, when problems did occur, they didnt remedy them promptly.

My occupation fortunately places me in a position to influence the buying habits of the U.S.' largest CE retailers, so I feel some consolation in the fact I've ultimately had the last laugh with HK. I have not purchased any 2002+ model year products, and likely will not do so again until I once again hear good things about HK's QA.

2 out of 5 stars harmon kardon dvd 50.......2005-12-02

This is a piece of garbage. We haven't had a good day with it. Now of course it's totally out of waranty and still doesn't work. We've been told it has to go to Saddlebrook New Jersey to be repaired, we live in Florida. You live and learn. Boy we're we taken..............................

1 out of 5 stars Not a godd deal for the price.......2003-03-17

I decided to buy this equipment to have multiple CDs/DVDs and MP3. After a short time, I had to upgrade the BIOS to solve a problem and recently (after a year) it stop working. I live outside USA and there is no way to service this equipment. I do not recommend this brand in CD/DVD players. Maybe they are good in A/V equipments, but they failed on this player.

1 out of 5 stars HARMAN YOUR TECHNICAL SUPPORT DISAPPOINTED ME!!.......2002-06-13

I WAS USED THIS DVD `PLAYER FOR ABOUT 2MONTHS, THEN I COULD'NT READ MY MP3 CD, AFTER A WEEK EVEN MY MUSIC'S CD AND DVD'S WASN'T ABLE TO PLAY, I WROTE AN EMIAL TO HARMAN'S SUPPORT, THEY ANSWER ME AFTER 2 WEEKS!!, AND EACH EMAIL FORWARDED WAS ANSWERED AFTER 1 OR 2 WEEKS.

4 out of 5 stars amazing sound, annoying controls.......2002-02-08

I was looking for a high end CD player that would also play DVDs, and the MP3 feature sold me on this unit.

Having said that, the sound is great, and that was my primary concern/criteria for buying this unit. But, there are a couple of inconveniences that bother me about its day-to-day operation.

First of all, you have to load all cds into the machine from one position on the tray. Of course, this is not difficult, but its a pain when you're trying to cue up multiple discs for on the fly dj-ing...

Secondly, there is a pretty long gap btwn reading one disc and the next, so that you'll never get a smooth transition from one disc to the next...

The shuffle feature is pretty weak...you can choose btwn shuffling all tracks on one disc or all tracks on one disc at a time, or shuffling all discs where it plays 2 tracks at a time from each disc. I thought that was kind of subpar.

And finally, the controls associated with repeating discs are also weak. you can choose between one disc at a time, one disc over and over or all discs over and over, but not all discs once with a hard stop at the end of disc 5.

I listen to that clean, crisp sound, and that still puts a smile on my face.
