The Harman Kardon DVD31 is a versatile DVD audio/video player designed to meet the high performance standards of both audiophiles and videophiles. On the sound side, it provides complete audio control and bass management for DVD-Audio playback using analog outputs. On the video side, it performs progressive scanning, also referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, which creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DVD31 also offers 3:2 pulldown, which reassembles the frame sequence of your original film-based content from DVDs to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. The DVD31's comprehensive array of audio adjustments allows you to adjust the time delay, output level, and speaker size selection for excellent audio reproduction from all speakers in a multichannel home entertainment system. For quality, the DVD31 uses a Wolfson 192kHz/24-bit audio D/A converter, along with premium internal components in the audio signal path.
The DVD31 provides excellent video playback when used with a high-definition display, thanks to its leading-edge digital video technology that uses pixel-by-pixel processing, rather than the line-by-line technique employed by conventional DVD players. This is accomplished by using a digital signal processor for superior picture quality and smoother, more realistic images with more detail.
In addition to playing DVD-Audio and DVD-Video, the DVD31 plays Windows Media Audio (WMA), VCD, CD, CD-R/RW, WMA, MP3, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM multisession, and 96 kHz/24-bit audio discs, and it's also compatible with JPEG still-image files stored on compact discs. The player can also simultaneously play MP3 tracks and JPEG images and coordinate the two, automatically changing images with each MP3 track played in slideshow presentations. The unit's program, random, and repeat play modes operate with the files and folders on MP3 and WMA discs, as well as with DVDs and CDs.
The DVD31's key picture-search and convenience functions include frame-by-frame advance, smooth fast-scanning at x2, x4, x16, and x100 speeds, fine slow motion at x1/2, x1/4, x1/16, and x1/100 speeds, three picture-zoom settings with panning capability, parental lock, and many additional features.
The player includes progressive-scan and standard-scan component video outputs, which can output simultaneously with the S-video and composite video jacks. It also provides both coaxial and optical digital output, multichannel analog output, and stereo analog audio outputs. It comes with a full-featured, backlit, ergonomically designed remote control.

Harman Kardon DVD 22 Progressive-Scan DVD Player

Product Description
Picture quality is not just a question of resolution, but how the image is decoded. The DVD 22 uses pixel-by-pixel - rather than line-based - processing to produce a noticeably sharper image. Compatible with DVD, MP3, Windows Media and JPEG discs, the DVD 22 features high-end DACs, a built-in test signal and backlit remote for outstanding video and audio performance.Amazon.com Product Description
Harman Kardon's high-performance DVD 22 makes it easier than ever to enjoy your favorite movies, music, and digital photos from the comfort of your living room. In addition to compatibility with DVD-Video, the DVD 22 can play MP3 and WMA CDs, DVD-R/-RWs, DVD+R/-RWs, and multisession CD-ROMs, as well as recordable CDs filled with JPEG image files. Its enhanced versatility extends to the its program play, random play, and repeat play modes, which function with all discs, including MP3/WMA CDs. Additionally, the DVD 22 includes a host of picture-search and convenience functions. The DVD 22's Harman-exclusive navigational interface provides ready access to favorite DVD titles and chapters, CD tracks, and WMA and MP3 files and folders via an intuitive onscreen menu. The player can also simultaneously play MP3 tracks and JPEG images, automatically changing images with each MP3 track played in slideshow presentations.
The DVD 22 achieves a remarkable new level of progressive-scan video playback quality when used with a high-definition or HD-ready television or display, thanks to digital pixel-by-pixel processing. This processing upconverts images to progressive-scan one pixel at a time, rather than one line at a time, as conventional DVD players do. The pixel-by-pixel reconstruction is accomplished by an integrated digital signal processor that provides smoother, more realistic images with exceptional detail and contrast relative to standard progressive-scan performance.
The DVD 22 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Three picture-zoom settings with panning capability and parental locks round out the video features.
Audiophile-grade 24-bit/192 kHz audio digital-to-analog converters ensure the highest possible fidelity and resolution, and the player uses premium-quality internal components in the audio signal path.
The player includes both progressive-scan and interlaced component-video outputs, available simultaneously with S-video and composite-video playback. Audio outputs include coaxial and optical digital and stereo analog, plus a headphone jack with a dedicated level control for private listening. The player comes with a backlit, ergonomically designed remote control.
Ultraslim, with a gloss-black upper panel, silver lower panel, blue dot-matrix display, and a minimum of visible controls, the DVD 22 cuts a striking picture. Its low height lets you place it virtually anywhere, including on the thin glass shelves used in many contemporary equipment racks and TV stands, or atop a receiver, where cabinet space may be limited. The player's styling matches Harman Kardon's receivers, speakers, and other AV components.

HK DVD 25 has best quality.......2003-08-24
Good Value.......2003-05-23
I tried an older JVC DVD player and a newer Sony Progressive Scan DVD player, and both players performed poorly...neither had video processors srong enough to carry a sharp image across a large screen area.
I decided to go with the Harmon Kardon DVD-25; the picture was and continues to be extremely satisfying, and it is a nice looking unit. As has been mentioned by other reviewers, the HK DVD-25 plays a variety of formats.
I would be lying to you if I told you it was the best; there are other DVD players out there that go for even more Benjamins than DVD-25 and likely perform better (such as Denon models and some Onkyo models), but if you're on a budget and you need a high-end DVD player that can muscle a sharp image onto a large HDTV, then Harmon Kardon is the way to go.
Tired of plastic?.......2003-02-23
Great Player! You wont be sorry that you purchased it!.......2003-01-11
When looking for a new player I wanted to get a Progressive Scan to use with my HD Panasonic Big Screen. I bought a Samsung DVD player but it did a very poor job playing my VCDs created using ULead DVD picture show. The picture was good ,but the audio was too fast.
I read some reviews of the HK and decided to jump at it since most reviews said it would play anything you throw at it. The truth is that it does! MP3, CD-RW, CD-R, VCD, SCVD and of course your DVDs.
First thing you will notice about the player is the weight. It feels like the solid product that it is. If you want to use the Progressive Scan you will need to change the settings. That is made easy through an On-Screen guide. The DA converters even have settings so you can make sure they match best through your AV receiver. It has a Test feature where you can make sure all your settings are correct for the best picture possible. This gives you a quick way to fine-tune your TV's brightness, contrast, and color settings
The picture is clear and the player makes almost no noise. It does a great job with CD music too. I don't use my Sony changer as much anymore.
Great DVD player - well built.......2003-01-06
I only wish it did stills (JPEGs). Error correction good on disks with bad/corrupted missing blocks. I have a DVD I tried to rip on my PC. Software caught the bad block on defective disk and halted, yet the Harman Kardon DVD doesn't skip a single frame when it same disk at the same spot.
The weight of this unit is almost twice that of a comparable JVC XV-s502/s500 I purchased as a gift. Really sturdy! Great price for a component quality DVD. All the mass- market units range about $129-$179 at discount or instead the higher end component DVD's all start around $500/$600/$700+ and many don't play MP3's, CD-RW's and other formats. This is a good mid-point price, component, value choice. Great features, great audio/video, Test picture to adjust TV quality, Mutli-function remote, Harman Kardon quality are all plusses!
Paid about $269 at local discout electronics store. Nice appearance - mix of black w/ silver trim, looks expensive.

HARMAN YOUR TECHNICAL SUPPORT DISAPPOINTED ME!!.......2002-06-13
amazing sound, annoying controls.......2002-02-08
Having said that, the sound is great, and that was my primary concern/criteria for buying this unit. But, there are a couple of inconveniences that bother me about its day-to-day operation.
First of all, you have to load all cds into the machine from one position on the tray. Of course, this is not difficult, but its a pain when you're trying to cue up multiple discs for on the fly dj-ing...
Secondly, there is a pretty long gap btwn reading one disc and the next, so that you'll never get a smooth transition from one disc to the next...
The shuffle feature is pretty weak...you can choose btwn shuffling all tracks on one disc or all tracks on one disc at a time, or shuffling all discs where it plays 2 tracks at a time from each disc. I thought that was kind of subpar.
And finally, the controls associated with repeating discs are also weak. you can choose between one disc at a time, one disc over and over or all discs over and over, but not all discs once with a hard stop at the end of disc 5.
I listen to that clean, crisp sound, and that still puts a smile on my face.
