RCA's first DVD player compatible with the new HD DVD disc format, the HDV5000 combines the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound with the convenience of DVD disc playback. Using the HDMI output, which provides uncompressed, all-digital video and multi-channel audio delivered via a single cable, you'll be able to view HD DVD discs in high-definition 720p or 1080i resolution. The HDV5000 is also backward compatible with your library of standard DVD movie and CD audio discs, and it offers an upconverting function that brings your favorite DVDs to near HD quality. Since the conversion occurs in the player, the signal is free of excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts. Note that viewing high-definition HD DVD Disc content requires an HDTV or HD-ready TV.
HD DVD movie discs provide the ability to search the on-screen menu, make changes to set-up options or access other menu functions while the movie is playing. Scene searching is facilitated with thumbnail images on the TV screen that allow you to use the cursor to go directly to a specific scene. You can even access bonus material like directorÕs comments while the movie is playing without going back to the discÕs menu. Other features include:

HD DVD Disc Format
Officially endorsed by the DVD Forum industry organization as the next high-capacity DVD disc, the HD DVD format delivers sharper, more detailed picture performance than standard DVD discs. Moreover, the HD DVD format opens new avenues of interactivity including enhanced on-screen menus, scene searching, directorsÕ commentaries and the potential for online shopping. HD DVD discs can offer both the current DVD and HD DVD formats on one disc, which means that special HD DVD discs will play in older DVD players as well as new high definition players.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.
- High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 720 lines.

I've now owned this player for almost 1-1/2 years!.......2007-12-06
First of all, completely ignore the "cannot play 1080p discs" and the "obsolete" nonsense spewed in the guise of "reviews".
First: The HD DVD discs were recorded as 1080p from the very first handful released back in April 2006, and the HDV5000 can play EVERY one of them. In fact, you will be hard pressed to identify any titles at all that are NOT recorded as 1080p (though the HDV5000 will indeed play those as well.)
(Note: The player will not output 1080p, though absolutely all of the original 1080p video information is, in fact, delivered to the HDTV. This means that it will fully meet the needs of the VAST majority of HDTV owners, though probably not all.)
Second: Every feature provided on any HD DVD released to-date is fully supported on every HD DVD player manufactured to-date. All that's required is the firmware be up-to-date (can be performed either by internet update or CD-ROM update from RCA.)
Finally: I own an HDV5000 which I purchased in July 2006. It is going strong at the center of my home theater setup and is currently running firmware version 2.4. I use it for both SD DVD and HD DVD playback and it provides excellent picture and sound with both (I use both Toslink and HDMI for audio, and component and HDMI for video.)
As far as delays are concerned -- true, it certainly isn't the quickest player imaginable, but it was NEVER anywhere NEAR as slow as those particular "reviews" state -- obviously written by people who never spent time with the player, let alone owned it! To give an accurate current picture, I just took measurements and here is what you can expect with firmware version 2.4:
Time from standby to drawer open: 45 seconds
Time from drawer open to picture start with SD DVD: 35 seconds
Time from drawer open to picture start with HD DVD: 65 seconds
As I said, I have owned this player since July 2006 and it continues to perform well in my setup. Excellent picture, excellent sound (requires DTS decoder in the receiver for either RCA or Toslink 5.1 audio with HD DVD) and I find the remote control responsiveness to be satisfactory (rapid button press sequences are not advisable.) Build quality is excellent and appearance, as always, is a matter of personal taste -- I consider it a good looking player!

I'VE HAD NO PROBLEMS .. ONCE THE MACHINE IS READY TO DISPLAY PICTURE , IT'S EXCELLENT .. I'VE A SAMSUNG BD-P 1200 .. THE PICTURE IS EQUAL IN DETAIL TO ONE ANOTHER .. @ 8' TO 10' MY SAMSUNG LN-T 4053H (720) LOOKS EQUALLY DETAITED AS MY FRIENDS LN-T4061F .. he says he would do the same again .. BUT HE SAYS I'M LUCKY @ PRICE & PICTURE QUALITY .. I DON'T THINK THE PUBLIC SHOULD BE SO NEGATIVE ABT. THE RCA TOSHIBA VENTURE .. REMEMBER YOUR FIRMWARE UPDATE .. LASTLY , USE HDMI OR NO LESS THAN COMPONENT CABLES .. BEST OF VIEWING . I THINK TOSHIBA IS DOING A BETTER JOB OF STAYING ON TOP OF THEIR GAME .. THE HD DVD ALWAYS PLAY .. DO NOT BUY IT.......2007-08-28
This is my second unit. The first one did not function correctly, neither the replacement. Every time I have sent the unit is around 50 dollars in shipping, so do the math. At the time I bought it (last November) I paid 423 dollars, so I am still bleeding from this unit. Besides, this particular model is sooooooooooo slow, it takes forever to upload the disk.
Worst part is that these people do not want to refund my money. They do not have online assistance nor email address to complain. So, I am stuck. They going to ship the third unit, so let's see how long it lasts before becoming non-operational.
High price, low quality. Do yourselF a favor, DO NOT BUY IT.
Great Player.......2007-06-07
I recently picked one of these up from Wal-Mart on clearance, it was new in an un-opened box for $200! What a deal! Those of you getting one will want to update the firmware to at least version 2.0. After extensive research I discovered a few things. First these HD DVD player are similar to computers in many respects, including the need to update the firmware as new technology is added and/or bugs are found and fixed. Some users have mistakenly thought that these were defective or incapable of playing 1080p discs, in reality it plays them all, it just outputs the signal in 1080i (or less) instead of 1080p. The reason for some discs not playing (King Kong being one of the main ones) is that there are new features on some of the newer discs, in the case of King Kong it is actually a new feature called U-Control, King Kong just happened to be one of the first few discs with this feature, if you read the warning paper that was inside the King Kong disc when you first opened it, it stated that you would probably have to update the firmware on your player in order to play it. Once you connect it to the internet and update the firmware(or you can call RCA and they will send you a CD for free that updates it) it works fine, the firmware also updates some HDMI-DVI connectivity issues as well as decreasing the boot-up time. As I see it the ability to update the firmware as the technology advances is a definite advantage.
FYI this is the exact same player as the Toshiba HD-A1, only the color of the faceplate is different and the buttons are square instead of round. As a matter of fact there are some reports of buyers of the Toshiba units getting the RCA splash screen during boot-up when they turned it on, and Toshiba had to send them a firmware disc to change it to Toshiba. Once you have updated firmware it all works fine, it is a great player, also keep in mind that even though these are the same unit as the Toshiba, RCA is usually a couple months behind Toshiba on posting the firmware updates, I believe Toshiba is currently posting v2.2 and RCA still shows v2.0 as the newest update. I am not recommending this, but some owners have installed the Toshiba firmware on their RCA unit, once you do this it then for all intents and purposes becomes a Toshiba player, and you get the Toshiba boot-up screen. I understand it will even contact the Toshiba website for updates once this has been done. Again I don't recommend doing this, I only mention it because it seems to further confirm this is the same unit as the Toshiba A1.
Over all I love this unit, I gave it 4 stars only because it is the lowest and most basic entry level player, the higher end units have faster boot-up times, and output 1080p, as well as several other whistles and bells. But for the price, the picture quality, and the features it is a great unit for those on a budget or wanting a second machine.
Great HD DVD if you don't care about future HD DVD's.......2007-01-14
As reviewer Ketran stated... This player will not play the 1080p disks. I also did the King Kong DVD thing with the same results... 32 seconds and error message, but RCA customer service didn't tell me there was a problem when I inquired. It also takes forever to say hello, load, and start play.. It's going back as soon as the roads clear.. Get the Toshiba HD-A1 or HD-A2 if you're looking for a moderate price HD DVD.

Interesting Features.......2007-12-04
The most important feature that potential buyers ought to pay attention to is that the default speed is ONLY 40x. Each and every time you want 52x, you have to hold the eject button for 5 seconds. At first, this may sound like a real inconvenient pain.
Sony says this on their Product Information sheet: "On rare occasions, some discs may not be able to tolerate 52x speed, causing them to break. We recommend that you do not use deeply scratched, brittle, or other discs that may break at 52x speed."
As someone who has had an irreplaceable treasured disc shatter in a 52x CD drive, I greatly appreciate Sony setting up the drive speed in this manner.
Another surprising feature is that even though the Amazon product page shows this drive with an ivory faceplate, a black faceplate change-out kit is included. Never before have I seen a manufacturer do this for their customers.
The instructions and all other included documents are written in 12 languages.
No driver update by Sony for this product.......2007-11-16
I bought this dvd burner August 2007 from Amazon on the basis of these reviews. The burner worked fine, but then it stopped being able to work with any programs to burn disks. It will play media fine, but no longer record. It may be the device itself, but it also could be the software driver. When I went to download an updated driver, I found others online had the same problem with this Sony dvd burner that I did. And I found like they did, that Sony did not support the product with updated software drivers.
What I am saying is, before you buy a dvd player/burner make sure that the company supports their product by providing software drivers for it. I am looking for a new burner, and the next one I buy will be from a company that supports their products.

Besides working just great, this was easy to install. I know little about hardware and I was nervous opening the tower but I did it and had no problems.

I have several Sony products. Flat screen TV, VCR and so on. When shopping for a CD burner/dvd rom, as soon as I saw the name Sony I was half way sold. To me, Sony products are, and have allways been, quality. I have never regretted buying a Sony, what ever it is.
