this grip rocks !.......2007-11-07

So I read all the reviews, still ordered this unit, and I had just got my 40d ordered but it took 2 weeks for amazon to ship ( the prime membership isn't for me, I canceled it) as amazon ships to so cal two day via ups ground anyhow, so back to the grip, had a d60 for 5yrs, with canon grip ( had money then) it worked great, now my 40d with this grip has rocked !!! Can you say we just went to Havasu lake and the opteka batteries lasted 3 whole days with about 400 shots no problems, shot mostly my canon 70-200mm 2.8L and this grip is the only non canon product I have ever bought with exception of a china battery for my canon and that battery still rocks 3yrs later, canon batteries suck.. so luv the grip and the issues you all are having I have NOT had, maybe the unit I got is from another run, b4 or after not sure.. but my grip came Oct, so with the 2 batteries at the price you can't go wrong ! I luv my set up ! u can see some picts I shot with this at renebruce.com check the pet picts, most all with the 40D and always with this grip, I also use the *button for focusing on the grip and it has not failed once in 4 weeks ! Keeping my fingers crossed ! Nice product as far as my thoughts, 5 star for sure nice work !

It's a grip.......2007-10-29

When I first got this grip it was intended for my 30D which was in the shop getting cleaned. I tested it on my 40D and it worked fine. After I got my 30D back - it did not work on the 30D, but DID work on my 40D still. I tried to contact the seller whom my emails went unanswered too - to see about a return or replacement. My negative opinion of them does not reflect on this items star rating.

I give this product a 4 since it did not work on the 30D right away - I did eventually get it to work after cleaning the contacts on the grip really well and trying it numerous times. For whatever reason - it works fine now. Had it worked as intended right out of the box - it would have been given 5 stars since the value is great. I do perfer the Canon grip's method of loading the batteries from the back instead of on the side - but it all works just the same in the end.

Like many people who reviewed this grip, I too wanted to save money and go with the cheaper brand. But like always you wind up paying more at the end then if you would of went with Canon's original grip. My main problem with this grip is that ON/OFF switch doesn't work at all, and so the grip is useless! I tried many things but no solution in sight. So for now I just left it as additional battery pack.

My advice: stay away from 47th STREET PHOTO and 3rd party battery grips! Spend little bit more now and you will enjoy your product for many years to come.

Overpriced compared to the real thing.......2007-10-12

This is currently for sale at $298.40 - are they on crack?
The real Canon grip is selling for $179 add a pair of real canon bp511 batteries and the Canon total comes to $277.93

Also, the description here says "includes 2 Power 2000 BP-511 1500 mAh Batteries!"
I am pretty sure that adds up to 3000 mAh not the 3400 claimed in the item title.

For the quality of the batteries and the product itself, this is worth maybe $160 - no more.

As Good As the Canon .......2007-11-12

The main difference between the Canon grip and this grip is quality control. You might get one or two that doesn't have a real good fit. The first one I got would lose contact when held by the grip with my 70-200 2.8L. This caused the camera to lose power. Frankly I didn't believe that others were not that way but I sent it back and got another and sure enough the second one works fine. There are some differences in the way that the batteries are held and inserted but the buttons feel the same as the Canon, kind of cheap, and when it's a good copy and all attached it feels just like the Canon. Not sure why but it does seem like I go through more batteries now so it's probably worth buying extra batteries.

I got this from 47th street photo though Amazon and while they don't make you feel very taken care of they do eventually come through.

Fits the new 40D perfectly.......2007-09-25

As the 3 year owner of a BGE1 grip for the original Digital Rebel (300D) - it would have been a show stopper in the purchase the new (Sept 2007) Canon 40D camera - unless a Canon Battery Grip for the 40D was available at the time of sale. The specs show the BG-E2 would work with the 40D and IT DOES! I ordered this camera body with the 28-135mm lens that has an Image Stabilization feature. Added to this is Canon's new 3" LCD viewer on the 40D and a two battery rig was a necessity.

I'm a semi-pro portrait photographer using a flash bracket to elevate my speedlight above the lens. The bracket attaches at the tripod screw - blocking standard battery access hatch on the baseplate of the camera - making the grip a must have for instant battery access during my photoshoots.

Rather than purchasing the very expensive Canon batteries - I went to the Amazon aftermarket and purchased perfectly functioning batteries from Sterlingtek - rated with 25% more power (2000maH) than Canon's offerings at a VERY VERY reasonable price.

Fit and finish on the BG-E2 compliments my new beautiful 40D almost perfectly. No problems with fit to the camera body or operations in the first 14 days of use - including a major shooting event where almost 600 photos were recorded.

As a final bonus - I purchased a Canon hand strap that allows me precise control of this VERY heavy rig. You cannot use this side strap without a BG anchor point.

As a past Battery Grip (BGE1) user - it was a "no brainer" to again purchase this BG-E2 device that fits the 40D. Additionally a 6AA battery caddy (included at no charge) allows for even more power backup should an unexpected power event occur.

The added weight of the grip and batteries to the metal camera bodied 40D with the heavy 28-135mm IS or 85mm f1.8 lens IS A HANDFULL. It takes much getting used to (this is the only negative I can report to date - time to go back to the gym). Canon's best lenses are glass heavy and the side hand strap was the camera control answer for me when not on the flash bracket.

If you're not shooting with an AC camera power /source adaptor in the studio this product is indispensable.

truly worth it .......2007-09-25

I was cautious when i first considered to buying this product but after receiving it i love it. the grip fits perfectly i don't know what other people are talking about when they say it's loose or doesn' fit right mine is perfect. it's a must have for any one who uses long lenses or loves to shoot portraits. the only down side to this accessory is the added weight it gives the camera but i think its worth it.

The battery grip is a very necessary add-on for the 40D (or any other Canon camera which it will fit). It turns out to be even better than described, as it facilitates vertical format with its extra trigger and controls, and of course, having two batteries extends the time between recharging or battery replacement. It even accepts AA batteries in case of an emergency (being somewhere without power for your charger). It adds a little weight, but does not make the camera harder to handle. Highly recommended.
