Amazon.com Product Description
Watch your favorite DVDs on your high-definition flat screen television with no loss of video quality thanks to the Toshiba SD-4990 upconverting, single-disc DVD player. Using the HDMI connection and a compatible TV, you'll get uncompressed digital video up to HDTV level resolutions of 720p or 1080i. And since this conversion is performed within the player, the signal remains free from excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts. You'll also be able to view your high-megapixel digital camera snapshots in enhanced resolution via the HDMI connection.
Measuring just 1.65 inches high, this stylishly silver, super-slim player is compatible with a wide variety of disc and digital file formats, including DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, and VCD discs as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG (Kodak Picture and FujiColor CDs) content burned to disc. It's also DivX Home Theater Certified, meaning that it's compatible with video burned to disc using both the DivX video format.
The SD-4990 performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.
With the JPEG Viewer, you can easily display your favorite digital photos and create custom slideshows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control. The interactive Digital Picture Zoom feature allows you to select an area of the video from a DVD and magnify it. Other DVD playback features include fast scan, slow motion, multi-angle selection, multi-subtitle selection, and parental lock.
You get vivid, realistic sound, thanks to Toshiba's 24-bit/192 kHz pulse code modulation (PCM) audio processor. PCM audio translates digital signals from your DVDs and CDs into warmer, natural sound. The DVD player offers Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and you can connect to a multi-channel home theater surround sound system via the coaxial digital audio output. It also produces 3D virtual surround sound from two speakers. It features the following video and audio connections:
- Composite A/V: 1
- S-Video: 1
- Component Video: 1
- HDMI: 1
- Digital audio: 1 coaxial, 1 optical
Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Customer Reviews:
I own this, and it rocks! GET IT NOW! It's a good alternative to the HD-DVD Player..........2007-11-10
I don't know why or how this has such a low rating, maybe because it is mostly idiots on here who know NOTHING about HDTV's.
See I am the technical type! I know what I am doing! I am not sure about the rest of the world though...
This player is a PERFECT 10! Toshiba sure does know about HD, they do it RIGHT! Even though this DVD player is not exactly HD, it puts out a 1080i Signal. It can be converted and sharpen your picture so it looks so close to HD, it make your regular DVDs look better than ever! I can only imagine what their HD DVD Player is like, I am gonna get that soon!
To explain this a little better to those who may not understand technology as well as others:
Think of a DVD Disc as a box packed to the fullest, so crammed in there that it won't fit anything else in it. And imagine this DVD Player as the one who has to open the "BOX." Basically the DVD is "released" into the DVD player and is open/unpacked... What the DVD Player then does is it processes the pixels and makes them fit to the screen in the best way possible. With your HDTV, it knows that it is 16:9 Formated, and depending on your focal resolution, whether is be anywhere from 480i - 720p - 1080i, it will automatically be processed to the highest standard for your TV, so you get the best picture and the more for your money, better than blurry Audio/Video cables, the HDMI port/cable is the most advanced Hi-Def port/cable in the known universe. Of course it's developed by SONY, the only #1 brand that isn't full of Bologna!
If you have an HDTV and you can't afford the NEW Toshiba HD-DVD Player, GET THIS! You will not only be saving time, you will be saving more money then trying to find the right one, buy this one!
Waste of money.......2007-11-09
You have to use component cables to connect to the TV in order to switch it to HDMI...... did they not think about this before releasing this product?
This thing rattles beyond anyone's imagination.
Throughout the entire movie... it sounds as if the DVD is about to fly out of the player and shatter against a wall.
So, if you buy it, make sure you have a place to put it where it is covered up and away from earshot (outside of the room with the door shut - might need a long HDMI cable though).
The picture is ok I guess. But 1 out of every 3 movies I watch, the screen will just randomly turn pink (sometimes green). If I go into the menu settings and switch one of the upversion modes (480i, 720p, 1080i), the screen blinks and then all is good (until about a week). Once again, I will have to go into the menu and change to another mode.
I get the freezing/skipping like everyone else does, but not quite as often. Maybe once out of every 5 movies.
So to sum up, if you decide to by this product, be prepared for:
- Long setup times
- Front panel power button that doesnt seem to do its job very well
- Freezing during movies
- Picture randomly turning green/pink
- Very loud rattling during playback
- Barely responds to a flimsey remote (weighs about 1 ounce)
- The lights on the front of the unit randomly light up/flash during the day/night. Why?
- Doesnt appear that Toshiba cares about this unit any longer (I guess they have given up on it). Im sure they realize it was a big mistake and do not want to throw more money at a horrible player. So, I doubt they have personnel creating a new firmware version for it.
Completely died in 8 months.......2007-08-20
I got this as a Christmas 2006 present. I probably watched 1-3 DVDs a week. It is now August 2007 and it won't read any disks I put in it. I have to buy a new DVD player. With all the bad reviews I see, I say, "Do not buy this!"
Excellent picture - and a fix for problems.......2007-05-16
I play both Divx (and Xvid) files and DVDs, and I have had several Toshiba DVD players due to their excellent picture quality for a low price, and this one is no exception.
They upgraded from 12bit video processing on the 4980 to 14bit on the 4990, and the picture quality is indeed yet better.
I won't detail all the Divx playing features that are described in other reviews, but suffice it to say that is plays a wider variety of files than the Philips 642 (which I also own) with better picture quality.
I recently upgraded to an LCD HDTV, and selected a somewhat more costly model because the upconverting of SD content was better than the entry model. However, the upconverting on this Toshiba player is better yet, and both Divx and DVD content upscales very well.
In summary, the picture quality, upconverting, and Divx playback compatibility are all excellent.
One flaw of the player is that it has some sort of "memory leak". In order for the player to work well, it has to be unplugged (not just turned off) when you are done using it. This clears the memory. If you start a session by plugging it in, it works fine 99% of the time, and the other 1% of the time, just uplug it again for a moment. That is definitely inconvenient - but there is a fix for that. Simply plug the 4990 into a cheap $5 power strip and plug the power strip into your usual outlet. Put the power strip in an easy to access place, and simply turn off the power strip using its switch after using the 4990. Then flip that switch right before inserting a disk. This should cure all the problems that people report with the one star reviews.
PS People talk about HDMI cables costing as much as the player. They are a ripoff ! There is a place called monoprice that has HDMI cables for under ten that are high quality.
Wish I could give it zero stars.......2007-05-03
This DVD player has been nothing but trouble. It freezes up and skips constantly. I get the message bad disc all the time. It sometimes won't even play brand new DVD's right out of their packaging. My old philips DVD player plays everything this DVD player won't.
Stay away.. stay far away from this POS.

it works.......2007-01-05
what more do you need to know. Only 4 Stars because the unit responds a bit slowly to the remote control, but I don't think that's because it has been chipped; it's a design fault from Toshiba. Unit plays all region dvds with no fussing around. and the price is right.

Customer Reviews:
Good product; silent, quick.......2007-10-20
The Iomega is very impressive so far; but I've only had a few days experience with it. Every time I've started it, it's been quite and quick, and incredibly easy to use. I got it and instantly backed up my files on it, and a day later my computer hard drive happened to crash. The Iomega literally saved everything I had, and had my repaired computer running like normal 15 minutes after it was turned on.
It hasn't survived the test of time, so there's room for doubt. But so far it's been perfect, and from that I gather that it's a strong product and a great deal.
Awesome product.......2007-10-18
The harddisk really works well once you plug it on to you computer. It is compatible to all the computers that i used which is very important for me.It is also light and portable and would be ideal for the computer student.I feel that i got value for my money.
Iomega External hardrive.......2007-10-08
The only reason i gave this product three stars is that this external hardrive does not come with backup software. I bought this from Amazon's Store and the first one was defective. I was so impressed with their return policy. I received the replacement right away.
Where's the software.......2007-10-05
Actually the drive is fine. It works as exoected, was easy to install. etc. The problem is that I was expecting backup/restore software with it, since several years ago in a previous hard drive purchase I did receive the software. Now with MS Vista installed I needed an updated copy. I now understand that Iomega refers you to a third party site and you need to make a separate purchase. The may be the standard process today but I was not expecting to spend the additional $$.
Froze.......2007-09-24
So I bought this to backup some info on my MacBook Pro and thought it would be ok. It would start off just fine, but then would just freeze on me and crap out halfway through. I let it run for a long time, just to make sure it wasn't just a slow process. I ended up just buying a different hard drive. Very dissapointing.
